Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

I bought Payet for 7.5 ( now 7.6 ). Is it madness to sell Payet now and buy Depay because I will lose that 0.1 or I should buy Depay and watch him scoring brace? 😀

You're not really losing anything unless you plan to bring him back in the next few weeks. You bought him for 7.5 and you're selling him for 7.5, you never realised that gain.

    Hey guys, just registered 🙂

I finished 3k last year and have never Wildcarded before xmas, but with the very welcome rule change regarding the Jan wildcard and the fact I have chalked up just 55 points so far, I have played my WC this gameweek (activated last Saturday evening, so have gained 0.9M TV so far this week). Any tips for the team I intend to finish the week with would be massively appreciated:

    Fabianski (McCarthy)
    Kompany, Darmian, Richards (Gomez, Targett)
Sanchez, Hazard, Chadli, Mahrez (Westwood or Surman)
    Aguero, Gomis, Sakho

I know targett isn't ideal but a 4M defender is necessary to afford the attack and Darmian/Kompany, and at least I would get two decent fix out of him before Bertrand's return. Also can't decide between Sakho and Diouf. If Hazard still failing in a couple of weeks I can downgrade to Pedro/Silva/yaya and potentially get benteke in. Thoughts?? Cheers!

I don't like Gomez + Targett. Get Silva for Hazard and uprade that defence.

I had the same feelings but I want to keep Haz for another couple of weeks to see how it goes. Remember he is still owned by nearly 50% would would be a major ratings slump (from my already terrible 2.7million) if he explodes. I would deal with Targett in a couple of weeks and hope I can upgrade to a safe 4.5 somehow

      It's a good effort at a Sanchez/Aguero/Hazard team.

Too rigid for me though, it makes change very difficult. You're happy with your low cost options now but there's very little wiggle room.

Thanks, as mentioned in my reply to Bialk i may just take the gamble and hope something happens that allows me to upgrade targett in a couple of weeks! e.g. strong form of Barkley continues to downgrade Chadli. Also I do have the option to swap out Haz if I need more flexibility in future. Not too concerned about point hits in the early part of the season

Quite similar to my team except that I have Silva and Depay instead of Hazard and Chadli.

Both options cost the same amount of money, and I'm considering switching but would be hiding behind a sofa every time City and United play because they're very template players on here.

Just a quick (and very basic) look at Pellegrini's Aguero vs. Martinez's Everton, just in terms of goalscoring:

    2013/14:

    Manchester City 3-1 Everton (5th October 2013)
    Mins played: 79
    Goals: 1
    Assists: 1
    Penalties missed: 1

    Everton 2-3 Manchester City (3rd May 2014)
Mins played: 28 (taken off injured)
    Goals: 1

    2014/15:

    Manchester City 1-0 Everton (6th December 2014)
Mins played: 7 (taken off injured)
    Goals: 0

    Everton 1-1 Manchester City (10 January 2015)
Mins played: 23 (came on for Jovetic)
    Goals: 0

Overall strike rate - goal every 34.25 mins!!! If he stays on the pitch all game you would take that!

Obviously not very much data here - but promising enough as long as he can stay fit. Fingers crossed he can repeat the regular occurrence of grabbing a goal and not succumbing to an injury as he did in two out of the four games!

Done some digging on Layun - he played for Mexico in this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup, which Mexico won. The final, in which Layun started at LWB was July 27th so was never going to be 100% for the start of the PL season.

Given he's managed two starts, its promising, and the manager has eased him into it by giving him just under an hour each time.

I reckon, like Sanchez and Aguero, he's ready for a full 90 and thus earns a place in my WC team. Potential fantasy gold indeed....

On second thoughts - although the big 3 midfielders is very tempting, it could be worth downgrading Silva> Yaya and freeing up 1.5 to improve the defence and Deeney? Would still have strong City coverage for the fix

I have 3 out of the 4, I just can't justify four double figure players.

I've got Sanchez aguero and hazard.

      Courtois McCarthy

      Richards Williams ward (Gomez staylor)

      Hazard Sanchez mata mahrez (Westwood)

      Aguero sakho gomis

Any tips how I can make it better? On paper it seems great but if some players have a shocker I'm relying on the big 3 I've got.

If I was you is downgrade silva and get in YYT if you want a City midfielder, then you can upgrade he defence.

    4.5 - 4.0

    5.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0

Obviously risky but there are decent options in that bracket.

It isn't just paper talk though, a large chunk of Chelsea fans are calling him to be currently dropped. I do think he'll play myself but if I were a Chelsea fan I'd be calling for the same. Team needs a bit of a freshen up imo, and Baba is a more athletic and dynamic player.

    Ayew + Richards + Kone(may rotate with Mahrez) 3-5-2

    OR

Westwood (bench fodder) + Kompany + Diouf. 3-4-3???

    Head wrecking decision.

Depay and Sakho or Payet and Diouf. Both are great options.

That's not a dilemma - with Sakho you cover Payet and then GW6 Sakho to Diouf. Depay is season keeper for me.

Ok. Maybe I'm overreacting. But when you've already got 2 defenders who are likely to be dropped soon (Gomez + Targett), isn't it a bit too much of a risk to also have 1) a defender you'll be unhappy to play (Richards), 2) 5th midfielder who has yet to feature this season and is likely to drop in price tonight (Andreu) and 3) a defender who's a constant rotation risk, and yet 4) a GK who will be dropped soon. None of these are big problems on their own, but all of them accumulated sounds like a wildcard waiting to happen for me.

Mmmm...I don't mind the throw away Andreu (I'll get him at 4.3, thanks for the tip)

The dodgy keeper and dodgy Targett are fine if I have money in the bank.

Clichy is nailed to the bench now because he is the the one who can play both LB and RB if a sub is needed...so no worries about Kolarov for a while.
