Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

I think im finally settled and would love some thoughts on this team. I regret pulling the trigger on WC, but i had a shitty start like most and just wanted to get the cover i need atm.

    Courtois / Butland

    Kolarov / Williams / Souare / Jenkinson / Have 5mil left

    Payet / Silva / Mahrez / Sanchez / Surman

    Agu / Gomis / Diouf

Forward 8 is pretty standard but the saving grace so far was mahrez from the start. Without him i think FPL would kick me out of the league due to thinking i was a bot due to the points won.

In any case, i got courtois since i think CHE will tighten up eventho thei were absolutely horid since the start. Rather have some cover than none. Not sure if a 5.4 and 4.5 goalkeeper combo is too much tbh. Would appreciate any thoughts you can spare on the team.

P.S. I dont like Man U at all and dont want any cover tehre unless its Depay.

Looks good, fairly template though. Too much money in defence for my liking, swap to some 4.5s and upgrade elsewhere

Looks like a good team to me. Although you might want to save some money in goal and defence to upgrade to a more expensive striker later on. Ruddy (Nor) and Richards (Avl) seem to be sure starters.

Cheers for replies people! Yea its fairly template, but i had half of that forward 8 to start with.

I will downgrade Goalies, since i might need a more expensive striker!

    Hi Guys,

I'm on a WC and really struggling to decide between:

    A. Payet and Gomis
    B. Depay and Gomis
    C. Payet and Pelle

I watched the Southampton game yesterday and they looked so frustrated. I don't know if Pelle got a goal in him this week and I don't think Gomis gonna score more than one. Same with Depay, the Brugge defender was rubbish and allowed him to roam free. What do you think?

    Repost. Resorted to WC:

    Ruddy
    Kolarov Richards Shaw
    Silva Mahrez Sanchez Ayew
    Aguero Pelle Sakho

    Butland Hoolahan Huth STaylor

    Any changes?

Diouf over Sakho? (Personal preference, you decide) - for me, Sakho has looked awful, wheres Diouf has Shaqiri, Walters and Arnautovic behind him to feed him.

Both have good fixtures but Diouf edges for me.

Kolarov to Sagna? Save money + Sagna guarenteed RB position for next month after Zabaleta injury.

Then strengthen your sub defenders as they are pretty awful

So with Kaboul "injured" i guess Coats at least gets a stay of execution as a starter?

Want to play him over Francis...mostly cos he's at home - that madness?

Also didnt realise how much Sun fans hated Kaboul...but going on the reaction on Twitter he aint popular!

    My thoughts on Chelsea assets:

A lot of talk on here about Chelsea and whether or not they will bounce back from their frankly awful start to the season. A lot of people are wildcarding, and there seems to be many on this site who seem shocked that these teams do not contain any chelsea assets.

Personally, I think all the Chelsea assets are overpriced. Hazard at 10 last year was a decent price, but if you were coming to the party late and getting him when his price was 11+, it smacked of desperation. Nothing has changed now - he has about the same ownership and is even more expensive. Would you have paid that amount for him last year? He may of been the leagues top goalscorer but he was never a standout captaincy option and always relied on a goal and 3 BPS to hit double digits. Always a risk.

Then you have Costa at 11. Potential there for massive hauls, but again a yellow card and a lack of bonus points means his price is too much for me.

No-one in midfield stands out, and the defence... well Azpilicueta at 6 could present good value if Chelsea can sort it out at the back, but there is no indication this is going to happen in the near future, with rotation on the cards for the underperforming backline. He offers virtually no attacking threat and now has competition from new signing Rahman. Terry and Ivanovic are no-go's IMO at 7.0 and Cahill and Zouma are far from nailed on. This defence is a minefield.

The fixture list does not smile kindly on Chelsea until GW 7. Plenty of time for these prices to drop, Chelsea to sort themselves out and some options to remerge. Not saying Chelsea are done for, but avoiding their assets now seems like a shrewd move to me.

TL;DR - Chelsea players overpriced, fixtures tough for a struggling team, avoid

A lot have been saying Pedro is overpriced, I actually think he might turn out to be the best Chelsea asset.

Indeed, i'm excited to see how he plays. In relation to the only other options in the chelsea attack (costa and hazard) he could present excellent value.

As I said, got a few GW's to show us what he can do!

didnt say they did, but after winning the league at a canter last year, they are now overpriced. Hazard does not score consistently every week, unlike players like Aguero and Suarez in the past, so does not warrant an 11.5 price tag. Same with Costa.

The defence is now filled with uncertainity and overpriced assets as well. I think the best tactic with them is to hold off and see how they do over the next few weeks.

Well, for one thing I just sold Hazard, so he's bound to get massive hauls against wba and CRY 😀 !
