Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

I keep looking at the 'big four' - but it just leaves no room for subsequent changes. If a mid price Mid or Forward takes off, you can't fit him in without dropping one of the four.

Playing with three however, leaves plenty of scope for change and adjustments according to form and injury.

Only question then is which three .....

I'm sticking with 2 for a lot more mid price options.

      Aguero + Samchez

This allows me to have Payet, Manè, Chadli, Gomis, Sakho and a good defence. I'm hoping 2 of my mid price options makes up for Hazard

I think I'll be including Silva in my team, but that still allows for two decent mid price options (alongside the inevitable Mahrez - whom I had from the start). And Silva could then become Haz in due course .....

    Courtois McCarthy
    Shaw Gomez Kolarov Richards Targett
    Hazard Montero Silva Mahrez Behrami
    Agüero Kane Sakho

Would leave 0.3 in the bank.

Have a serious feeling about Ritchie. I reckon Mahrez ---> Ritchie could become the popular move in the near future. Saying that, Mahrez looks great too so would have to go massively off the boil.

They're very good away from home though, and they certainly don't roll over when the big boys come to the Liberty.

Last season's results for their next ten fixtures:

      Sunderland 0-0 Swansea City
      Swansea City 2-1 Manchester United
      N/A - Didn't play Watford
      Swansea City 1-1 Everton
      Southampton 0-1 Swansea City
      Swansea City 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
      Swansea City 2-0 Stoke City
      Aston Villa 0-1 Swansea City
      Swansea City 2-1 Arsenal
      N/A - Didn't play Norwich City

4 Clean Sheets and 5 Goals Conceded in 8. I'd certainly take that again!

To all the FPL vets. Is it better to have a strong midfield that you would play week in week out and a 3rd striker you would bench every week or a decent 3rd striker that you would rotate with a fifth mid?

So for example a midfield of:

    Sanchez/Yaya/Depay/Payet/Mahrez
    Aguero/Gomis/Watmore

    Or a bit more balanced:

    Sanchez/Yaya/Chadli/Payet/Mahrez
    Aguero/Gomis/Diouf

I like having bench fodder in my front 8 but others will disagree. All depends how you want to play.

a 4.5m bench fodder mid. rotations are stupid in attacking roles allways. never ever ever ever work.

this year tho a 3 5 2 with a 4.5m forward as bench foddder cud be promising

If your fifth mid and third striker play regularly then you should be fine either way. I would never have a player that rarely plays on my bench.

What are you guys who still have Henderson thinking?

I've played my transfers so would be taking a 4pt hit if I got rid. 0.9 ITB.

    Ruddy (Rudd)

    Azpilicueta, Alderweireld, Targett (Gomez, Mertesacker)

    Payet, Ozil, Hazard, Henderson (Wanyama)

    Aguero, Pelle, Wilson

You guys think it's worth going Henderson to Mahrez (or someone else?) Well aware I should probably try and get Pelle and Wilson out of there at some point too, but I'm thinking of blindly holding on for another week before I look at them.

    A) Play Jenko (BOU) and bench Albrighton in a 3-4-3
    B) Use AOA Chip and bench Jenko (BOU) and play Albrighton (TOT)

What are your expectations about Kolarov? People think he will be rotating much with Clichy the coming fixtures, just like last season?

WC team... What do you think out of 10

    Courtois/McCarthy

    Shaw/Sagna/Cedric/Ward/Gomez

    Sanchez/Silva/Depay/Mahrez/Westwood

    Aguero/Benteke/Ighalo

Courtois cheapest option to cover Chelsea defence
Like Sagna with Kol def out
Mahrez, Westwood, Ighalo all rotate well together

Started with Aguero and was happy captaining him last week. Now everyone has him and I am captaining Rooney. I have a bad feeling about this ....

I have it on Roonpig too, but Sat early game doesn't bode well. Might switch to Kun.
