Our last glance back at the previous round of fixtures brings Palace’s new goal-getting wide man into focus. Swansea’s outstanding start to the season is also acknowledged, whilst the lack of impact from big hitters is causing plenty of concern.

The Player

Bakary Sako’s weekend goal and assist ensured Jose Mourinho had little to cheer about in his 100th home match in charge of Chelsea.

Having fired the winner at home to Villa in his Gameweek 3 debut, the Mali international went one better as Palace emerged from Stamford Bridge with all three points. After just two matches, Sako – who has also earned maximum bonus on both occasions – has racked up 23 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Delve into the underlying data and it’s clear to see his immediate impact is no fluke. Despite playing only half of the first four Gameweeks, Sako leads the way amongst midfielders for shots on target, with a total of eight – put into perspective, team-mates Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Yohan Cabaye have mustered seven attempts on target between them.

Given that Bolasie and Zaha managed four strikes apiece last term, Sako’s arrival clearly offers the Eagles greater firepower in the attacking midfield three slots. His 15 efforts for Wolves – albeit at a lesser level in the Championship – illustrates his eye for goal and the midfielder’s performances so far suggest he’s stepped up seamlessly to the top-flight.

At a price of just 5.5 in FPL, Sako looks set to follow in the footsteps of Riyad Mahrez and offer Fantasy managers another budget candidate to consider in their five-man midfields. Upcoming clashes with City and Spurs may deter many from immediate investment, with the schedule taking a turn for the better in Gameweek 7. With Pardew’s emphasis on attack, though, last weekend’s result suggests the Palace new boy has the talent to reward early adopters and flourish regardless of fixture.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over United maintained Swansea’s superb start to the season as Garry Monk’s men went into the international break in fourth spot in the Premier League.

The manner of the weekend win underlined Monk’s tactical acumen. Devoid of the injured Jefferson Montero, the Swans boss shifted from 4-2-3-1 to a midfield diamond after seeing his side go behind, with Andre Ayew moved up front alongside Bafetimbi Gomis. The impact was instant, as the duo bagged a goal apiece to condemn the Red Devils to their first defeat of the campaign.

Having also scored twice away to Chelsea, Monk’s men have deservedly earned plenty of Fantasy interest in the first month of the season. With four and three goals accrued respectively, Gomis and Ayew have undoubtedly been the standout candidates but they’ve been backed by a supporting cast including Montero, Jonjo Shelvey and Gylfi Sigurdsson that has created chances aplenty.

One look at the upcoming schedule suggests more of the same, too. With trips to Watford and Villa twinned with home encounters against Everton, Spurs and Stoke, Swansea sit third in our Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next six Gameweeks. Given their form so far, the case for having at least one, or even two Swansea options, could well prove a very viable tactic.

The Talking Point

It’s been a season that could barely have been more frustrating for Fantasy managers so far.

Manchester City aside, few, if any, big hitting teams have managed to meet our expectations – indeed, although the Etihad club sit atop the league, Sergio Aguero has scored just once, compounding our misery further. For many, the Argentine’s blank at home to Watford was just the latest in a series of captaincy fails as the campaign stutters out the blocks.

In midfield, we’re desperately awaiting the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez to ignite, whilst up front, it’s arguably worse – not one of the top eight scoring forwards started with a price in excess of 8.0. Aguero, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have all failed to justify the hefty outlay, leaving mid-price and budget options to lead the way.

Surely it can’t continue like this. The likes of Aguero and Sanchez, in particular, have posted strong underlying stats that suggest keeping the faith is the wisest move. Whilst Hazard has clearly toiled for Chelsea so far, his record as Fantasy gold over the previous three years cannot be argued – flash back to last term and the Belgian managed just one goal in the first six before finally finding his form.

As we’ve seen time and again, the big hitters almost always rise to the top. Having a little patience seems the best answer but in the midst of an international break, with wildcards flying around, that’s never easy.

Why would you bench ward who is a goal threat and scored against arsenal and play richards when sunderland have been scoring goals every game?

        Ridiculous hindsight bias.

Let's be honest, playing Richards at home to Sunderland over Ward away to Chelsea is by far the smarter move. To suggest otherwise is laughable.

So Sky complaining about United signing Martial. Instead they should spend bigger money on a more established player, because Martial might not like the PL and want away. Y'know, someone like Di Maria.

Transfer window has apparently been an absolute disaster for United according to Holloway.

But it was well established Di Maria was done in the PL? Nothing United can do about a player who doesn't want to be near the club.

Janu needs more development, I think he could have played more so I agree on him and Hernandez.

But they're 2 players, compared to the 4 or 5 they brought in who can perform.

There are areas that need remedying, I agree, and I'm not over the moon with it.

But realistically they dropped a number of players who weren't going to play, and made some damn decent signings as well.

Why is it now accepted football knowledge that we need a cdm at Arsenal

    We don't , we have coqulain !

Whst we need is a parter for him that is not an attacking 5ft mid like Cazorla . Wilshere will get this gig when fit but as he isn't much we need someone else , but not an out and out defensive mid

Plonked in two cosy banks of 4 when Chelsea are winning and he looks good for sure, but give him the exposure Coquelin gets most weeks and well he gets exposed.

Suppose it is true that his job is easier than coqs. But I'd argue he made terry/Cahill/Ivan look good as much as they him though.

Arsenal have le Coq while United, for e.g., have Schweiny, Carrick and Schneidy, while City have Fernandinho, Delft and Yaya. What are Arsenal supposed to do if Coq gets sent off (!), injured or loses form? Play Arteta?

In Arsenal's heydey they had two powerful presences in the central midfield engine room, not one. United have two, City have two....Coq may be good enough, but he is not sufficient....

+1 what he does shouldn't be a one man job. Granted he gives it a much better crack than windscreen wiping Flamini, but I think Busquets is about the only player in the world that could do the whole work load required by Arsenal on his own.

He didn't play him in the Qualifiers so United could just not select him for Europe as a promise to Madrid if they buy early. Arsenal left Cashley Cole out of the FA Cup squad in January to sweeten the deal for Chelsea.

Have a look at his stats vs. Gomis. Not nearly as inferior as i would have thought. If you can get comfortable with them (i did), then decide which fixtures you prefer:

        TEKKERS: mun NOR AVL
        GOMIS: wat EVE sot

        I think Tekkers wins.

Belgium also confirmed they are hoping to have him back for their Cyprus game i think...

Who is the biggest priority to get rid of, would be before GW6 by the way:

    A) Mane (MUN, SWA, che, LEI)
    B) Payet (mci, NOR, sun, cpl)
    C) Sakho (mci, NOR, sun, cpl)

Actually tempted to hold Mane, those fixtures seem pretty decent to me, Chelsea away has been proven to not be as bad as it was last season. Thoughts? Cheers 🙂

Djilobodji was on the radar a year ago and Chelsea were quoted €20m then. Last year of contract so much cheaper now but Chelsea needed a defender.

Hector I know little about but Steve Clarke is manager at Reading and will have given Mourinho the lowdown. May be a sale and loan back.

Dunno about improve it but he's giving Henderson a run for his money in a very similar sort of role this season.

Thought he had a good game at the weekend as well. More bemused by the Mason pick if i'm honest

Aye, I can't for the life of me remember him ever having a stand out performance.

Shelvey is looking a very big presence in that midfield right now....calmed down a lot as well.

He's a grand PL standard player - not really sure what level England are supposed to have

Well they haven't got a Lampard or Gerrard to call upon right now for sure.

I'd give him some time, as he has really nice stats and if Saints get it together he'll start getting points.

Two good home fixtures followed by a trip to a leaky Chelsea followed by LEI at home, not much to dislike 🙂

Wayne Rooney had not heard of Anthony Martial until yesterday, according to Morgan Schneiderlin.

Sky sources understand Manchester United will pay Monaco an initial £36m for the 19-year-old forward, making him the most expensive teenager in football history.

“To be honest, yesterday [Sunday] on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak,” Schneiderlin said.

“I told him he's a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the beginning of this.

“I told him he is technical and powerful. A little like Therry Henry, even if it's the press who are making that comparison.”

To be fair to Rooney, many had no idea yesterday and he doesn't claim to be a big football fan outside of his own teams
