Our last glance back at the previous round of fixtures brings Palace’s new goal-getting wide man into focus. Swansea’s outstanding start to the season is also acknowledged, whilst the lack of impact from big hitters is causing plenty of concern.

The Player

Bakary Sako’s weekend goal and assist ensured Jose Mourinho had little to cheer about in his 100th home match in charge of Chelsea.

Having fired the winner at home to Villa in his Gameweek 3 debut, the Mali international went one better as Palace emerged from Stamford Bridge with all three points. After just two matches, Sako – who has also earned maximum bonus on both occasions – has racked up 23 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Delve into the underlying data and it’s clear to see his immediate impact is no fluke. Despite playing only half of the first four Gameweeks, Sako leads the way amongst midfielders for shots on target, with a total of eight – put into perspective, team-mates Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Yohan Cabaye have mustered seven attempts on target between them.

Given that Bolasie and Zaha managed four strikes apiece last term, Sako’s arrival clearly offers the Eagles greater firepower in the attacking midfield three slots. His 15 efforts for Wolves – albeit at a lesser level in the Championship – illustrates his eye for goal and the midfielder’s performances so far suggest he’s stepped up seamlessly to the top-flight.

At a price of just 5.5 in FPL, Sako looks set to follow in the footsteps of Riyad Mahrez and offer Fantasy managers another budget candidate to consider in their five-man midfields. Upcoming clashes with City and Spurs may deter many from immediate investment, with the schedule taking a turn for the better in Gameweek 7. With Pardew’s emphasis on attack, though, last weekend’s result suggests the Palace new boy has the talent to reward early adopters and flourish regardless of fixture.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over United maintained Swansea’s superb start to the season as Garry Monk’s men went into the international break in fourth spot in the Premier League.

The manner of the weekend win underlined Monk’s tactical acumen. Devoid of the injured Jefferson Montero, the Swans boss shifted from 4-2-3-1 to a midfield diamond after seeing his side go behind, with Andre Ayew moved up front alongside Bafetimbi Gomis. The impact was instant, as the duo bagged a goal apiece to condemn the Red Devils to their first defeat of the campaign.

Having also scored twice away to Chelsea, Monk’s men have deservedly earned plenty of Fantasy interest in the first month of the season. With four and three goals accrued respectively, Gomis and Ayew have undoubtedly been the standout candidates but they’ve been backed by a supporting cast including Montero, Jonjo Shelvey and Gylfi Sigurdsson that has created chances aplenty.

One look at the upcoming schedule suggests more of the same, too. With trips to Watford and Villa twinned with home encounters against Everton, Spurs and Stoke, Swansea sit third in our Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next six Gameweeks. Given their form so far, the case for having at least one, or even two Swansea options, could well prove a very viable tactic.

The Talking Point

It’s been a season that could barely have been more frustrating for Fantasy managers so far.

Manchester City aside, few, if any, big hitting teams have managed to meet our expectations – indeed, although the Etihad club sit atop the league, Sergio Aguero has scored just once, compounding our misery further. For many, the Argentine’s blank at home to Watford was just the latest in a series of captaincy fails as the campaign stutters out the blocks.

In midfield, we’re desperately awaiting the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez to ignite, whilst up front, it’s arguably worse – not one of the top eight scoring forwards started with a price in excess of 8.0. Aguero, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have all failed to justify the hefty outlay, leaving mid-price and budget options to lead the way.

Surely it can’t continue like this. The likes of Aguero and Sanchez, in particular, have posted strong underlying stats that suggest keeping the faith is the wisest move. Whilst Hazard has clearly toiled for Chelsea so far, his record as Fantasy gold over the previous three years cannot be argued – flash back to last term and the Belgian managed just one goal in the first six before finally finding his form.

As we’ve seen time and again, the big hitters almost always rise to the top. Having a little patience seems the best answer but in the midst of an international break, with wildcards flying around, that’s never easy.

I am, but haven't looked at it, definitely want English players, just need to find out who is most likely to play.

I already have a fairly decent team, so might just go with a couple of players playing the qualification minnows.

At the moment got KDB, Konoplyanka, Yarmolenko, Rooney Rodriguez, Alderweiled from the more known players.

Noit sure about the attack, thinking about switching Lewandowski for someone with a better fixtures, how about you? What's your standing?

KDB, Lewandowski, Yarmolenko and Alderweireld are also in my team atm. I'm looking at Lewandowski ---> Keane, he could score a few against Gibraltar. Lafata/Dockal are on my watchlist. Italy's fixtures are looking good but don't know who to get.
Maybe I'm also going for Rooney/Sterling.

          Keane is a good idea!

I was looking at Lafata as well, they should win over Kazakhstan.

Austrian players also look a good bet, especially against Moldova.

Do you think Rooney and Sterling will actually start or will Roy give a chance to players with less experience? I can see the San Marino game ending 6-8 :0 so it's important to have three playing players there. Have Cahill as a defender for that one as well.

Looking at the fixtures Denmark or Israel could be good choices, although the Israeli players probobaly only short term.

Best picks from Austria are Alaba (on penalties and some free kicks) and Janko. (I'm austrian so I watch every game from them 😉 )

Don't know anything from expected the England line-up. It's a bit of a lottery - they all could score well. Same with Ireland beside Keane.

Would have got Damari from Israel but he's injured (didn't play the last game in the austrian league).

Thanks a lot! Austria seem to have a very good generation now, hopefully your team manages to pull some good results together 🙂

Was just looking at the fixtures might actually do

              Lewandowski -> Keane -> Lewandowski

Also Dzeko seems a good idea, but for GW8.

Seems like Denmark have both fixtures quite nice, so I think I'll have a look at their team.

It's a weird fantasy competition given the immense amount of rotation.

Yes it's definitely the best generation since 20 years. 1998 was the last time Austria have qualified for a tournament.

Maybe Bendtner from Denmark (don't know if he's in the squad)

I really like this fantasy game. So much research has do be done...

yep, it makes it more interesting from that perspective, and the research part is also good. I also like the Euro League one for the same reason.

Will check, I think they had someone called Poulsen. By the way is Almer the starting keeper for Austria? Only have Kozacik (Slovakia) and the Cypriot goalkeeper and in one case it's a really hard fixture and in the second Cyprus aren't the best team.

Yes Almer is the 1st choice keeper.

                    Line-up should be:

                    Almer
                    Klein-Dragovic-Hinteregger/Prödl-Fuchs
                    Baumgartlinger-Alaba
                    Arnautovic-Junuzovic-Harnik
                    Janko

By the way , if you still have time to answer ,as you mentioned you're Austrian, I live in Bratislava and am planning to visit Graz in the Autumn or Spring and was just wondering whether you have any suggestions to see there/do there?

                      Thanks !

                        Now I've time again!

Bratislava is very nice, I was there a few weeks ago, but it was very hot, something like 35°C...

I know Graz because I live just a few km outside the town 😀 It's a nice city, the 2nd biggest city in Austria only behind Vienna (population of 300k) and also the 2nd prettiest (maybe Salzburg comes close).

I think there's enough to see/do for everyone, depends what you like to see/do really. I would definitely go to the "Schloßberg" (view over the city), the "Herrengasse" and to "Schloß Eggenberg". Maybe visit the "Kunsthaus" (a new and very modern looking buildung) or the "Zeughaus".

There are also loads of shopping opportunities (about 5 or 6 big shopping centres). The biggest one is the Shopping City Seiersberg (for sure bigger than the Aupark Bratislava) a few km outside of Graz.

If you want to see some Austrian Bundesliga Football, then you have to visit Sturm Graz in the UPC Arena Graz Liebenau 😀 It's normally no problem to get tickets on the matchday but it could be sold out if they're playing v. Rapid Vienna, Austria Vienna or RB Salzburg.

If you fancy some really shocking icehockey instead you have to watch the Graz 99ers. They have finished in the bottom four five times in the last five seasons...:D

I'm sure you will enjoy Graz !

                        Thank you very much!

I'll write these down 🙂 I'm a big Ice Hockey fan so thanks for the tip, could be really cool to see one of their games 🙂

Sturm is a well known team in football so that could be a good opportunity, I guess that's more dependant on the time I would visit there.

Was considering some site (Schlossberg and the others sound nice) and if I'm at the right time even some hiking (heard that Styria itself is really beautiful).

I heard that Graz is a very student town, which I hope translates into the atmosphere as well.

As for Bratislava, it's a nice town, I enjoy living here, and yeah the summer was really hot ,35+ for quite a long time , but glad you liked it.

So many panic buys happening. As an Arsenal fan I am one one side disappointed that we haven't done any more business (ST and CDM) and on the other relieved that we don't seem to be going out and buying players for the sake of it (who will most probably end up as dead wood in the squad - something that we have done too many times!). Wenger has trust in his squad and the youth development (Bellerin last season). Don't get me wrong, I do think this is one of his downfalls and the reason why we haven't competed for the league in a long time but he is a rare breed of manager today, resisting temptation of ridiculous fees. Football is a business drowning in it own wealth and success. What a circus the transfer window has turned into.

Would be interested to hear United fans opinion on the running of the club since SAF retired...

True, but there's one extremity of stupid where you buy for the sake of buying, and the other extremity where your team is crying out for quality additions in certain positions (ST and DM especially) and you decide to do nothing about it. We're just on the other extreme end of the scale, like Wilshere Knowledge said yesterday.

I agree, in cases such as Kondogbia and Schneiderlin - we should have paid the money (£5-10M more than what Wenger wanted to pay). But I have to admit I am on Wengers side when players like Sterling and Martial go for stupid money with little to no proven talent. I also do not agree with Chelsea and City buying players when they should be turning to their youth teams. Surely that is not sustainable.

I agree about ridiculous fees and the fact that we should never resort to City, United, Liverpool and Chelsea's antics. However, strengthening the team with quality is necessary and in this day and age, players have inflated prices. Paying £10m more for a player isn't bad business, but Wenger's far too rigid on his principles that will inevitable lead us to another 4th place finish and losing at the first knockout stage of the CL.

Couldn't agree more. As a football fan though we need to ask ourselves - do we want short term glory or long term success?

Wenger has built something solid at Arsenal. I think he has lost his way a little with the 'Barcelona style' that we try to emulate and that this has been our downfall in recent years. I just hope whoever takes over from Wenger doesn't do a 'Van Gaal'.

For around a quarter of a billion - i expected far better.

Problem Man Utd have is that this 19 year old needs to be exception, Aguero kind of class.. In order for people to change from "What the hell have you paid" to "Actually fair deal"...

They've paid so much, nothing short of 5+ years of stella performance is anyone ever going to view it as a bargain.

I cannot image what the dressing room at United must be like now. Especially with the biggest ego of all running the team. I cannot see him being there for any longer than his 3 year contract and what a mess someone is going to have to clean up afterwards.

Ridiculous fees is subjective. Wenger goes for value

Izzy Brown has signed a new four-year deal at Stamford Bridge. The 18-year-old is currently on loan at Vitesse Arnhem until the end of the season.
