Having been linked with a move to St Mary’s throughout the summer, Virgil van Dijk eventually completed his move from Celtic to Southampton on deadline day. The 24-year-old defender joins the Saints for a reported fee of £13 million, and has penned a five-year contract with the south coast club.

Speaking to the club’s official website about the signing of van Dijk, Executive Director of Football Les Reed explained how the Dutch U21 International has been on the radar of the Saints for some time:

“We’ve had Virgil in our system for a long time and have explored the possibility of signing him in previous transfer windows, and this year we had a really strong opportunity to do it. The Champions League had an effect on the moment of release, which we were aware of, so it was about keeping our focus and doing our due diligence before eventually getting him over the line… Virgil has signed a long-term contract, so clearly sees a strong future here with us. He’s young, hungry and wants to prove himself.”

THE HISTORY

Van Dijk began his career with Dutch side Willem II in 2009, before transferring to Groningen a year later. He made his professional debut against ADO Den Haag in April 2011, and went on to establish himself as a regular starter during the following two seasons, racking up 57 league appearances, and scoring five goals.

His performances for Groningen attracted interest from Celtic, and the Scottish side swooped for Van Dijk in the summer of 2013, signing the defender for a fee of around £2.6 million. The Dutchman picked up league winners medals in both his two full seasons north of the border, while he was also named Players’ Player of The Year for the 2013/14 campaign. In total he made 75 league appearances for The Bhoys, scoring nine goals, while he has played in both the Champions League and the Europa League during his time in Scotland.

The centre-back has represented Holland at under-19 and under-21 levels, but has yet to make an appearance for the senior national side.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the hefty transfer fee involved, Van Dijk looks likely to partner skipper Jose Fonte at the heart of Southampton’s defence and help fill the void left by Toby Alderweireld from last season. Maya Yoshida has started every Premier League match so far but is now expected to provide back-up, along with loanee Steven Caulker, unless manager Ronald Koeman looks to play with three at the back again as he did in the Gameweek 3 clash at Watford.

Comparing last season’s defensive statistics for the trio – although only data from Van Dijk’s eight Europa League appearances are available for analysis – the former Celtic defender fared best when it came to interceptions, averaging 3.4 per match, compared to 2.0 for both Yoshida and Caulker in the Premier League last term. The Japan international does hold the edge when it comes to tackles (1.6) per match, whereas Van Dijk only averaged 0.6, while Caulker tops the charts for blocks made with 1.0 per match in the 2014/15 campaign, compared to 0.6 for Van Dijk.

The fact that Van Dijk has been handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) further suggests the Dutch defender is expected to be a starter at St Mary’s, with Fonte and left-back Ryan Bertrand also initially valued at 5.5, although both are now available for 5.4 in FPL. This makes Cedric Soares and Maarten Stekelenburg – at 5.0 apiece – the cheapest routes into the Saints’ backline right now, though the right-back’s owners will be a little concerned after he was subbed off midway through the second period in two of the first four Gameweeks.

What Van Dijk does have in his favour is his attacking potential, with the six foot four inch defender a strong aerial threat from set-pieces, while he has also scored a number of goals from direct free-kicks. With neither of the Saints’ dead-ball experts, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse, nailed on starters at St Mary’s, Van Dijk could well be handed some opportunities from set-pieces.

In terms of possible defensive returns, Southampton have registered back-to-back shut-outs after conceding five goals in their first two matches. The upcoming fixtures (wba, MUN, SWA, che, LEI, liv) suggest Koeman’s side will do well to maintain their recent impressive defensive displays, perhaps affording Fantasy managers the chance to initially make sure Van Dijk does earn a regular spot in the starting XI, and also handing us the opportunity to assess where he stands in the pecking order as regards to set-piece duties.

Certainly, if Van Dijk establishes himself alongside Fonte as we expect, there’s no doubt the 5.5-priced defender could see him emerge as an attractive option when Southampton’s fixtures turn favourably from Gameweek 11 onwards.

The genuine possibility of returns at either end of the pitch is always an attractive proposition for Fantasy managers, and with the Saints backline handing us plenty of reliable options over the past two seasons, in addition to their early exit from the Europa League, Van Dijk could definitely emerge as a popular choice for our five-man backlines as the season develops.

Sanchez to silva (then KDB at later date)

    Current WC team. Changes needed?

    De Gea / McCarthy

    Kolarov / Gomez / Bellerin / Cedric / Muniesa

    Yaya / Sanchez / Mahrez / Pedro / Westwood

    Aguero / Wilson / Gomis

    * I'm thinking of Sinclair instead of Westwood and to downgrade Muniesa.

    ** I know DDG is a risk, I won't keep him unless there's confirmation he'll play.

      1. They are bothed nailed, nyom is attacking right back the attracts BP's and maybe some assists and prodl is a centre back that can get a goal or two.

      2. Butland, I see city scoring more then arsenal plus butland gets some save points.

      3. Kun sooner or later is going to destroy a team and the people that didn't captain him are going to kick themselves but the others look good options.

So you know some players wear these protective masks when they play e.g. Fabs last season

Could a player wear a Mexican style wrestling mask? And therefore perhaps not be the person that is the name on the back of their shirt.

    I've always wondered this.

I'm so tempted to Wildcard, but I think I'm going to be patient and just roll my FT instead.

    Team for GW5:

    Myhill
    Williams / Cedric / Kolarov
    Mahrez / Hazard / Payet / Ramsey
    Kane / Wilson / Aguero

    (Ruddy / Huth / Francis / King)

I feel Palace will be a tougher one for City, so maybe captain Kane as surely he's due and Sunderland love to concede!?

    Look ok?

I don't think Yilmaz is as good as Giroud. Dost would have cost a fortune, and it would have been a big gamble to bank on him repeating last season's exploits. Lacazette would have been a great signing, I agree, but it seems like he wanted to stay at Lyon for now. Cavani is obviously top class, but Arsenal are never going to pay £50m for a 28 year old, and that's not a bad thing. Sanchez and Ozil are the only players they've ever spent more than £15m on.

If Lacazette picks up his form again (he's had a poor start to the season), then I think Wenger should splash the cash on him next summer, or in January if possible. It made sense not to waste money on someone who's not an actual upgrade on Giroud/Welbeck/Walcott.

The bigger mistake is pretending that Theo can play upfront. He is 26 and not going to improve. Wenger should have moved him on and looked for an upgrade during the summer. Theo + cash deal for Raheem in the summer would have strengthened the first eleven immeasurably.

As for striker I hope Arsenal keep scouting younger strikers and move when the opportunity arises. There was a rumour that Wenger enquired for Simone Zaza. Icardi would be brilliant.

And yet he scored great goals in that position. I'm not saying he should be playing every game in that role, especially not in the PL, but he definitely CAN play as a striker, the same way Gotze can even if he his an advanced midfielder/winger.

This is a straw man argument. Wenger also indulges in it. Forget big names. Arsenal are one Coquelin injury away from sliding into a mini crisis. Arteta's legs are gone and I will be surprised if we can get 10 starts out of him. This is the kind of gamble a top team should not be taking.

As for strikers we have never replaced Van Persie. Both Giroud and Wellbeck are decidedly mid table quality although I still hope Wellbeck can improve. Bottomline is we have obvious weaknesses and Wenger doesn't even have the excuse of paucity of resources for not addressing them.

The fee for Cesc is not correct. The rumour is when Arsenal sold Giovanni Von Bronckhorst to Barcelona they waived part of the fee to compensate Barca for Cesc. So the implied fee for Cesc would be a few million euros.

I have Myhill and assumed I would be transferring in Foster at some point. Now I don't know where I am! Myhill not done much wrong really.

I think with two City/Chelsea games out the way already you have 32 potentially profitable fixtures playing a West Brom keeper every week. If I sell Myhill I might get Lindegaard in for McCarthy and own the pair. Still only 9.0m invested.

      4.5 Westwood
      4.5 Francis
      4.0 Saylor

I think Westwood and Francis are solid bench picks. Some weeks I will play Francis no problem.

I also like Watford defenders. Nyom and Francis gives you a good rotating combo for example as a third starter.

    Who to replace Ozil?

Hoolahan +3.5 and 3 good fixtures in his next 4 before I wc gw 8

Mata Looks good so far can definitely see some big points this week against Liverpool side 3-0 at home to West Ham over the week end

Chadli +1.5 Playing a poor Sunderland defense that have conceded 10 goals in their first 4 with an out of form Harry Kane someone has to rack up the up the points for Tottenahm

Wijnaldum +1.5 2 Very appealing fixtures coming up in a West Ham side that did just come off of a shock victory at anfield but I think were all aware what happened the last time West Ham beat a top side (Beat Arsenal away then lost to Bournemouth and Leicester at home in their next 2) I expect him to do well at home to Watford as well though the 2 after that are quite tricky not one of my top picks.

Shaqiri +1.5 Still not really sure what hes doing at Stoke (credit to Mark Hughes) but hes looked quite good in his opening few games IMO has a tricky fixture against Arsenal away but after that he could turn into fpl gold

Hopefully this was helpful to people with a similar dilemma, who should I go for in your'e opinion?

Hoolahan is often the one sacrificed if they are making tactical changes I.e. When they responded to the red this week. I think his pitch time will be limited at times

Chadli has new competition and even tho he is a big goal threat I don't believe that Poch trusts him. Spent some spells on the sidelines last season even when banging them in, and N'Jie and Sonaldo may squeeze him at times.

I'd go Shaq too for what it's worth
