Having been linked with a move to St Mary’s throughout the summer, Virgil van Dijk eventually completed his move from Celtic to Southampton on deadline day. The 24-year-old defender joins the Saints for a reported fee of £13 million, and has penned a five-year contract with the south coast club.

Speaking to the club’s official website about the signing of van Dijk, Executive Director of Football Les Reed explained how the Dutch U21 International has been on the radar of the Saints for some time:

“We’ve had Virgil in our system for a long time and have explored the possibility of signing him in previous transfer windows, and this year we had a really strong opportunity to do it. The Champions League had an effect on the moment of release, which we were aware of, so it was about keeping our focus and doing our due diligence before eventually getting him over the line… Virgil has signed a long-term contract, so clearly sees a strong future here with us. He’s young, hungry and wants to prove himself.”

THE HISTORY

Van Dijk began his career with Dutch side Willem II in 2009, before transferring to Groningen a year later. He made his professional debut against ADO Den Haag in April 2011, and went on to establish himself as a regular starter during the following two seasons, racking up 57 league appearances, and scoring five goals.

His performances for Groningen attracted interest from Celtic, and the Scottish side swooped for Van Dijk in the summer of 2013, signing the defender for a fee of around £2.6 million. The Dutchman picked up league winners medals in both his two full seasons north of the border, while he was also named Players’ Player of The Year for the 2013/14 campaign. In total he made 75 league appearances for The Bhoys, scoring nine goals, while he has played in both the Champions League and the Europa League during his time in Scotland.

The centre-back has represented Holland at under-19 and under-21 levels, but has yet to make an appearance for the senior national side.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the hefty transfer fee involved, Van Dijk looks likely to partner skipper Jose Fonte at the heart of Southampton’s defence and help fill the void left by Toby Alderweireld from last season. Maya Yoshida has started every Premier League match so far but is now expected to provide back-up, along with loanee Steven Caulker, unless manager Ronald Koeman looks to play with three at the back again as he did in the Gameweek 3 clash at Watford.

Comparing last season’s defensive statistics for the trio – although only data from Van Dijk’s eight Europa League appearances are available for analysis – the former Celtic defender fared best when it came to interceptions, averaging 3.4 per match, compared to 2.0 for both Yoshida and Caulker in the Premier League last term. The Japan international does hold the edge when it comes to tackles (1.6) per match, whereas Van Dijk only averaged 0.6, while Caulker tops the charts for blocks made with 1.0 per match in the 2014/15 campaign, compared to 0.6 for Van Dijk.

The fact that Van Dijk has been handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) further suggests the Dutch defender is expected to be a starter at St Mary’s, with Fonte and left-back Ryan Bertrand also initially valued at 5.5, although both are now available for 5.4 in FPL. This makes Cedric Soares and Maarten Stekelenburg – at 5.0 apiece – the cheapest routes into the Saints’ backline right now, though the right-back’s owners will be a little concerned after he was subbed off midway through the second period in two of the first four Gameweeks.

What Van Dijk does have in his favour is his attacking potential, with the six foot four inch defender a strong aerial threat from set-pieces, while he has also scored a number of goals from direct free-kicks. With neither of the Saints’ dead-ball experts, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse, nailed on starters at St Mary’s, Van Dijk could well be handed some opportunities from set-pieces.

In terms of possible defensive returns, Southampton have registered back-to-back shut-outs after conceding five goals in their first two matches. The upcoming fixtures (wba, MUN, SWA, che, LEI, liv) suggest Koeman’s side will do well to maintain their recent impressive defensive displays, perhaps affording Fantasy managers the chance to initially make sure Van Dijk does earn a regular spot in the starting XI, and also handing us the opportunity to assess where he stands in the pecking order as regards to set-piece duties.

Certainly, if Van Dijk establishes himself alongside Fonte as we expect, there’s no doubt the 5.5-priced defender could see him emerge as an attractive option when Southampton’s fixtures turn favourably from Gameweek 11 onwards.

The genuine possibility of returns at either end of the pitch is always an attractive proposition for Fantasy managers, and with the Saints backline handing us plenty of reliable options over the past two seasons, in addition to their early exit from the Europa League, Van Dijk could definitely emerge as a popular choice for our five-man backlines as the season develops.

Who to pick in defense for GW5?

    Butland - McCarthy
    Targett - Shaw - Sagna - Richards - Francis

    Currently on WC

    Howard / Lindegaard

    Francis, Cedric, Kolarov, Naughton, Nyom

    Silva, Pedro, Ayew, Mahrez, Sako

    Aguero, Gomis, Wilson

    1.8 ITB

GK - Howard to be used later once fixtures improve, Lindegaard to be used now but worried about starts.

Could do Pedro to Sanchez, but thought pedro was going to rise so I had him in the team for the moment in case i wanted to keep.

    Thoughts or suggestions?

Good team but benching headache very week. . Monitor west Brom press conference to see if Lindegaard will start right away.

I would keep Pedro. Wait for Arsenal to start scoring some goals before picking Alexis or another MF.

Yeah i thought about dropping sako for a 4.5 mid, but don't really know who I want that I don't have. Maybe costa if he starts firing. Could just store it in the bank until the next bandwagon starts.

Michail Antonio was involved in over 40% of Forest's goals since the start of last season:

    19 goals
    15 assists
    =34 returns
    in 54 games

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQlreo2Qwyc

Reminds me of Ayew in terms of attitude. Often starts wide, but loves getting in the box.

Yes, Coquelin is a vitally important player but Ramsey could also play there. Even though Coquelin is a lot more selfless and defensively minded, they already have too much mids.

We do not have Coq's alternative, and he has been converted to defensive midfielder, which was a success frankly.

He is becoming a yc machine too

Unfortunately Rambo isn't quite suitable for that position.

Arteta lost his mojo, can't play whole game, tackle shy

Coquelin is a good eg of Wengers genius for developing young talent unheard of a year or 2 ago now seen as essential started in Arsenal squad.

Just look at Bellerín only 20 years of age looks like he has being playing top level for 10 years what a future that kid has ahead of him.

He didn't develop Coq, he sent him out on loan to various clubs and ended up having to recall him because we ran out of players. It is pure luck that he turned out to be decent.

Bellerin was well known and should have been introduced earlier. Spending nearly £30m on 2 poor right backs and sending Jenkinson on loan was just madness.

Going out on loan is a very important part of a young players devlopment it gives them a chance to play 1st team football and make mistakes so that they can learn and grow as people and players.

Sure, but at Freiburg for example, Coq wasn't even developing as a CDM, he was a workhorse out wide. And even if it was beneficial, how much credit can you possibly give the manager?

Chelsea certainly can't take credit for Courtois' development, for example.

I really like Ozil as a player because of his creativity and excellent vision. But he barely moves; Santi could excel or atleast do just as good as him in the number 10 role; but Ozil is still an excellent player.

That was when Alexis was banging them in.

Ozil gets more stick than he deserves. Frankly it comes back to Giroud and his misses. If we had better strikers Ozil would be looking like a world beater.

Agree. But Santi has also excelled in the deep lying role.

Personally I would start with Ozil on the left and Ramsey behind the striker. These are not fixed positions anyway. Ozil keeps drifting to the left hand side even when he starts central. Alexis upfront and Ox on the right. This would be the best possible combination we can put out now IMO.

The biggest way of course is the chances he creates. Last season he created more chances per 90 mins than any other player. He probably wouldn't be slated as much if he had the assist number he should have for the chances he creates.

Another way he makes the team better is how he transitions the phase of play from the middle third to the attacking third. His movement and ability to find space between the lines is immense, and something many take for granted watching games. Notice how against a 10 man Newcastle we struggled to mount pressure that high up the pitch, whereas normally (even when struggling) we are camped in their final third.

The problem is he makes everything look to easy. He can beat a man with a slight drop of the shoulder, he doesn't take more touches than he needs too, and he is technically brilliant.

Another problem is the team isn't suited for his strengths, so much of his passing is seen as conservative. With little threat in behind with Giroud, he has to find other avenues. This was especially bad in 13/14 when Theo got injured, and we played Ozil, Rosicky and Cazorla behind for large chunks.

There is a reason he started for the World Cup winners, who have incredible depths of attacking resources, why Mourinho said he was the best 10 in world football, why Ronaldo was so annoyed he was sold, and why the notriously difficult to impress Madrid crowd booed Perez for selling him.

                  He's Mr Underrated.

One reason I can think is he will not play Coquelin for some games at home. When the opposition parks the bus for example. So he may have thought why have two first teamers in that position.

But still I agree with you.

This is the reason why Coq isn't completing 90 min lately. Because he knows if he gets sent off or injured, We're screwed and that is his feck up

Last season he gambled with only two centre backs at the beginning of the season. And deployed monreal and debuchy as emergency centre halves. Leading to dropped points as well as lot of pressure on Wojciech.

Not acceptable for a top team really. I will get a lot of flak for saying this but Arsenal have outgrown Wenger. He was good enough when we are at Highbury or when we had a large stadium debt. Now we need a more modern manager who is motivated by trophies and can think big.

thats probably true and he would be well worty of it given his success and the way he revolutionised the club and in many ways english football in his first 6 or 7 years..

but that does not make him ammune to criticism for the bollox he has made of the last 11 in terms of success down to his own stubborness and bs policies

Luckily Schneiderlin wanted to go to United for our sake.

It is not as if he does not go for players problem is the players dont always want to go to Arsenal lots of competition in London for signatures especially from big bucks Chelsea.

    Pathetic from the FA:

    - Rescind Mark Noble's red card.

    - Charge West Ham with failing to control their players - as they told the ref it was never a red.

    What?! 😆

You think it's acceptable to berate a referee if he's wrong?

I play hockey, and have had some truly horrific umpires, and if you question an umpires decision at all you get a 10 minute sin bin.

How footballers act towards referees is one of footballs biggest failings, imo.

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 6 months ago

If a ref makes a ridiculous decision, it's naturally going to provoke a reaction from competitive players pumped with adrenalin.

If a ref makes a correct decision, and players surround him simply trying to intimidate him and cheat, that's different.

Neither are right, but common sense would suggest it's a bit harsh to punish them on this occasion.

Recipe for anarchy. Besides, the laws of the game gives the referee the role of adjudicating on various things. On the field of play, his decision is what goes.

A natural reaction which players should learn to suppress, and if they can't, they should be punished for it.

    A) Francis
Seems like a BAPS Magnet; Huge attacking threat and Bournemouth have some nice fixtures (nor, SUN, stk, WAT)

    B) Ward
Scored goals against Arsenal and Chelsea (If I had him, I would probably bench him), decent fixtures after City and Spurs and carries a lot of attacking threat.

Assuming you meant for rotation, not the injury!

Are there any Deeney owners left? If so, what are you thinking?

His stats look decent despite the lack of returns.

I brought him in on my WC last GW. 😉

From the small amount I've seen of him, he looks a good finisher, so with the number of shots he'd been having I thought I'd punt.

Although my main reason for getting him was good rotation.

I wouldn't blame you for selling, but I wouldn't classify it as urgent.

If I said I could have Sakho instead of Deeney?

Would prob mean Bellerin and Sakho rather than Ivanovic and Deeney? It's a draft so long term thinking needed I guess

I really don't like Sakho atm. I don't think he's playing well, he doesn't seem that involved in attacks, and with these legal issues hanging over his head, I'd personlly avoid.

          I would however ditch Ivan!

Yeah I think I might stick with Troy for now given that the stats are still decent, but ditching Ivanovic in a draft game worries me if Chelsea come good with him involved.

I'm not sure if this Baba Rahman dude is ready just yet....

Van dijk is the best defender in the SPL but it doesnt sound like he did much defending going on those block and tackle stats. Will he make the step up?
