As always, we delve into the Gameweek 5 data in our first members article of the week. Arsenal’s midfield and Leicester’s form pair arrive under analysis, whilst we also cast an eye over Everton and West Ham’s playmakers after both guided their respective sides to victory.

Anyone else think bringing in Coutinho on a free is an excellent differential?

Think he's due for some goals.

Just think it's a big 2 weeks for liverpool coming up. there will be some goals surely. Tekkers will get at least one. Maybe just the one but he'll get that.

    2. Eze Really?

My choices: Payet who I got rid 3 weeks ago and Coutinho. Coutinho 2 good fixtures.
I can drop Chadli or Pedro.

        yep. for Sanchez.

But people will say that's crazy.

        I like it personally.

Fixtures and form not there for Sanchez despite almost moments and stats.

What a great feeling it is to own Kolarov and him not get rotated like in years past. This run of games has been low maintenance for one I always want to own him but so volatile.

      Gomez, Darmian.

Villa suck and Targett may get replaced more so than Gomez.

I think he just looks like a shadow of his former self at the moment. Maybe see if he does anything in CL first but personally I'd trust the others over him.

No. I have a five man midfield due to my team value and now ive got benching headache.

        Mahrez Hazard, Ayew, Sanchez, Yaya
        Aguero, Gomis, Wilson

Attention clever people...I'm completing a form which asks to explain the difference between two statements to a low level learner of English (keep it simple). So for example, there's a difference between saying 'I work in London' and 'I am working in London' (the first is permanent, the second is temporary).

Anyone have any ideas on this one?

    She quit her job.

    She resigned from her job.

      quit means walk out...

      resign means worked notice?

Yeah, that's kind of how I see it. But it's a tough one as the words are very interchangable.

No I think your right. Resigning doesn't imply working notice.

Interesting, as I would have said that resigning does mean working notice (letter of resignation). But I suppose it does not necessarily.

You could resign with immediate effect though. Although the statement doesn't actually say that.

I'm not clever but I would say that quit is more colloquial, resigned is a little more formal. Same meaning in essence.

She quit her job - she voluntarily quit. The decision was hers.
She resigned from her job - she circumstantially quit. The decision was not hers.

Quit implies a reaction whereas resigned is a thought out decision maybe?

    5. Marknlard

Now if the statement was 'she was put on gardening leave' then it could not be more clear. That means...erm...

They mean the same but the latter is.a more informal way of saying it.

If the job is Fantasy Manager both are true and rife.

Otherwise, "resigned" is an amicable exit. "Quit" infers a degree of unhappiness and suddenness.

I also agree that Test Eagles has articulated most accurately the difference between 'quit' and 'resign'. However, the amount of different answers you've had probably shows that this isn't a particularly suitable example for people learning English at a low level.

However, the other example ('I work in London' vs 'I am working in London') is much more clear cut so you should probably stick to ones like this which aren't ambiguous.

Thanks Klostermann, I think you're right. It's not suitable for a low level learner and perhaps that is part of the point of them asking it.

Quit is just more informal. Both statements carry the same meaning. Is quit more an American word that has crept into UK usage?

I hear them say 'quit it', which means stop doing that and we in the UK dont use that phrase

I would note that 'quit' is also a functional description, describing both the act of ending the working relationship and the leaving-behind of the workplace. Agree with others that it is also the more informal of the two, and also that quitting implies self-determination. As Sab mentions, yes you hear 'quit' in America to cover any job leaving/cessation of anything.

Resigning from one's job would imply a more formal process, e.g. the handing in a document explaining the reasons for one's departure, and also as Gerrard (and others may have) noted such resignation may not always be desired by the job-leaver. People are encouraged, urged, forced to resign just as they may do of their own volition.

      Good luck 🙂

I find it quite interesting that a few people have stated that 'resignation' might not be desirable by the job-leaver. To me it is a completely neutral word which does not have any implicit bias. Although some emotion can be attached to it depending on the context i.e. 'I've been offered a new job with a better salary so will need to resign from my current job' vs 'My boss has said that I've been under performing and has even started putting pressure on me to resign'
