It’s time to touch base again with our Sky teams ahead of Gameweek 7 this afternoon. As always, we assess the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries, transfer trends, the watchlist and take a look at the Scout team and our future plans.

Gameweek 6 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below are the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional five points).

FixtureMoTM
Everton vs ChelseaSteven Naismith
Arsenal vs StokeJack Butland
Crystal Palace vs Man CitySamir Nasri
Norwich vs BournemouthWes Hoolahan
Watford vs SwanseaTroy Deeney
West Brom vs SouthamptonVirgil van Dijk
Man United vs LiverpoolDaley Blind
Sunderland vs TottenhamEric Dier
Leicester vs Aston VillaRiyad Mahrez
West Ham vs NewcastleDimitri Payet

Riyad Mahrez continued his excellent form by earning a fourth MoTM award in just five appearances, which highlights the Algerian’s near-essential status at the moment. Jack Butland and Daley Blind also have more than one award after both picked up their second last week. Butland is in sensational form and if Stoke can add some clean sheets to their repertoire he is currently looking one of the strongest options in goal. A final mention for Wes Hoolahan, who has been on our watchlist for a couple of weeks and continues to offer a great budget option at just 5.5m in an attack-minded Norwich team.

Gameweek 6 Bonus Points

Four goalkeepers picked up bonus this week. Jack Butland was the main man once again after making an impressive ten saves and earning the MoTM award to bring home seven points despite conceding two goals. Butland and Alex McCarthy are the current leaders in the bonus stakes, with six apiece.

In defence, nine players grabbed bonus, four for tackles and five for passes completed. Full-back Simon Francis was closest to earning both, missing out by one completed challenge – he joins Alan Nyom, Eric Dier and Jordan Amavi at the top on six bonus points overall.

In midfield, there were 15 beneficiaries in total: 11 for tackling and five for passes. United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger was the man to collect both in an impressive performance, helping himself to six points. Francis Coquelin is the game’s highest bonus earner, with 12 points overall so far.

Fantasy Football Scout members can access all information regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

We have a Manchester exodus on our hands, with injury doubts affecting the sales of David Silva and Sergio Aguero, although both have since played in midweek and look fit for Saturday. Sergio Romero’s brief cameo in the United team looks over after David de Gea’s move to Real Madrid broke down. Wayne Rooney is a doubt for the weekend after picking up a minor injury on international duty, whilst Luke Shaw looks set to miss the season after a shocking leg break against PSV.

Riyad Mahrez and Andre Ayew continue to be drafted in by the masses. Harry Kane is a somewhat surprise inclusion, having yet to find the back of the net in five appearances. Bafetimbi Gomis is the second-highest scoring forward in the game and has three home fixtures in the next four to continue his form, whilst the consistent points offered by Yaya Toure have convinced 3.5% to further invest.

Watchlist

Here I aim to highlight a few differential players with low ownership that I think could be good options in the coming weeks to help you climb the rankings. These will be looked at in three specific price brackets to cater for our available budget. These names evolve with fixtures and form and offer Fantasy managers a nudge in hopefully the right direction.

Notes
It was Riyad Mahrez to the rescue, as finally a captain brings home some returns. Alongside my double Watford defence, he was the only source of points as the rest of my team continues to falter. It’s a strange position to be in, though, as I’m pretty happy with the team overall and am fairly confident it will start to deliver shortly. Joe Gomez is one to keep an eye on, if he starts to find himself out of the starting line-up, and Sadio Mane has some tough matches coming up but he should be useful down the line for captain swaps. With far more transfers used then I would have wanted at this stage, I’ll do everything I can to hold off from tinkering for a while.

Captain Plan
In Gameweek 8, I plan on having just one captain, so because of this, I can be a bit more frivolous this week and not worry about who the armband lands on. Even so, I still have a tough choice. I’ll either stick with Mahrez for Saturday’s trip to Stoke and then switch to Mane for the Saints’ tough match at home to Man United or I’ll just go with the one skipper and opt for one of Sergio Aguero/David Silva. In the past, quality has offered outperformed quantity when it comes to captains but this season seems to go against most logic, so perhaps going with the “lesser” players is the way to go this time.

If, unlike me, you have a Liverpool attacker in your team, they look the best way of navigating this Gameweek, with Sunday to Saturday rotation involving two easy home matches on paper.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’re running our own Fantasy Football Scout League this season and we’re sitting second in the rankings at present. With a £1000 prize to the winner, you’d be mad not to get involved. To join, visit Sky Sports Fantasy Football and key in League Name: FFScout, League Code: 8009000.

The Fantasy Football Club

This Friday The Fantasy Football Club show, where you can catch new host Max Rushden and Paul Merson at 18:30 SkySports 1 HD where they will be discussing the upcoming week’s Fantasy Football and interviewing former Chelsea boss Avram Grant.

Evening all, looking at writing up this week's bandwagon article now but wondering who should feature.

Looks like Payet will but the others I'm unsure on. Ideally I like to write about 3 players.

Any thoughts on who else to include?

I actually think Barkley is an interesting given the never-ending form vs. fixtures debate. He's the perfect subject for that. I've planned on waiting until GW11 to pick him up, but that form has me wondering if he can produce against just about anyone at this point. Would be interesting to see a write-up on him.

@pinkfish: back to that Bordeaux lineup. It looks relatively strong. A couple of players are rested, but other than that, it's just the injured players missing. So, their odds are quite appealing.

My word of caution is that they tend to struggle to score without their no. 1 striker. The ones they have on field are young and unproven and they will need to rely on their midfield just like Liverpool most likely has to. I expect a low scoring match, both defences should be quite strong. Maybe play 1-0 on bet365 with the bore draw money back.

It wasn't normal tactics. If you remember, that game was all about the goal difference. Palace caught us on the counter as we needed to score 8 goals so just went for it, the fact we drew was irrelevant.

City would still have won the league on goal difference.

Liverpool were conceding goals for fun all season, it just finally caught up with them. City were the better team, but Liverpool played some of the best sustained attacking football the league has seen for a few months there - I think it should be applauded, not ridiculed.

What gets overlooked is that it was actually Chelsea that really blew the league. Liverpool screwed up going for more goals against Palace, but they wouldn't have won it even if they'd beaten Palace. Towards the end of the season Chelsea lost to Villa, Palace and Sunderland and drew with Norwich. They completely threw it away.

Look, as an Everton fan I'd have no qualms with sticking to the "Liverpool blew it" narrative, and they had a great chance to win it that they didn't take, but losing against Chelsea isn't exactly like losing at home to Port Vale, and the Palace game wouldn't have made a difference.

Chelsea, on the other hand, lost 3 and drew 1 in the last 9, all very very winnable games. Liverpool went on an incredible run to get into the position they did, Chelsea just blew it. If Chelsea had won just 2 of the games against Villa, Sunderland, Palace and Norwich, they'd have won the league.

I keep hearing people say save bench boost for a DGW but I'm yet to hear a good reason for doing that. Are you really going to have more than 11 players playing twice in a DGW? Bench boost can be equally effective in a normal GW given the right fixtures.

So you can load up on DGW ers without having to bench your really good SGW players.

I concur. Maybe if coupled with a WC the proceeding week. That is the only way you will hit more than 11 DGW players.

      1. Milner4eva

        10 years, 6 months ago

It's not about having to hit 11, its about not having to bench your medium/good SGW players that week

I see your point, and it can definitely work in some scenarios but I can never really recall having to bench a decent SGW player in a DGW, but it most depends on which teams have the double and the funds available I suppose.

It can definitely work out, but equally it can work very well in SGW also, where as triple captain without a doubt is best used in a DGW.

Very true, I guess it just makes your transfer options more flexible on a big DGW, that's the main advantage

Yeah that's true, I envisage holding onto it then just because of that reason. I'm not sure if it exactly will work out better, it's so hard to predict.

No, just use it when you look at your bench and think that you see a lot of points potential on in.

They're being really unlucky too right now. Courtois gets injured for a long period, Falcao gets injured, Pedro gets injured. It's true that when everything goes wrong there's not a bit of luck but when everything goes right luck assists you.

    Hello chaps!

What to do with this shower of sh_te?

    McCarthy // (Butland)

Kompany // Shaw -inj- // Williams // (Targett) // (Muniesa)

    Yaya // Mahrez // Sanchez // Montero // Coutinho (c)

    Aguero // Gomis // (Sakho)

At present i'm considering moving Shaw out for Skrtel, on account of his decent upcoming fixtures and the possibility that he's "alright for the odd goal".

There has been a consencus around about saving a transfer so you'd have more flexibility when making transfer with so many big hitters failing so far however I have ended up with over 2 mil left in my transferkitty which gives me more than enough flexibility when making my transfers. Doesn't this make it rather pointless to save transfers at least when you have reason to use one?

Two trades always better than one, regardless of how much money you have in the bank

Thanks mate. Start him against Norwich?

Got -> Kolo, Darmian, Nyom, Bellerin and Gomez

Sure, Kolarov and Gomez are the two standout options there. Third def pick is very tough!
