We’re covering Premier Punt‘s Champion’s League offering this week, with a run down of some of the players from the 32 teams involved that are worth considering. There are weekly games available that include all 16 clashes, daily games that cover either Tuesday or Wednesday’s fixtures and, finally, single game contests for each match. The unique selection criteria and rules for the latter were looked at in last week’s Premier Punt focus.

Here’s who has caught our eye for the next two evening’s fixtures, with our recommendations broken down by player classification…

The Defence

Bayern Munich have conceded just three goals in seven league clashes and another shut-out looks possible as they welcome Dinamo Zagreb. The German side’s full-back Jerome Boateng, at 6.8m, is significantly cheaper than David Alaba (8.2m), while Juan Bernat (6.3m) offers the option of a cheap double-up amongst Bayern’s backline.

Real Madrid’s Marcelo (6.8m) and Roma’s Lucas Digne (5.7m) are two raiding left-backs that could provide points at both ends of the pitch.

Digne’s team-mate Morgan De Sanctis should start in goal against BATE as first choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny is sidelined. Zenit St Petersburg also look well set for a clean sheet with Belgian side KAA Gent visiting the Russian champions. Full-back Domenico Criscito is available for 5.7m and goalkeeper Juri Lodygin will set you back 6.8m for the home side.

The Midfield

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (9.0m) looks good value for Roma and has scored in his last three Serie A appearances. His opponents BATE look decidedly shaky in Europe and were beaten 4-1 in their Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen.

Angel Di Maria (14.8m) appears to have adapted well to life in Paris with three strikes in four outings for PSG as they travel to Shakhtar Donetsk. This match could see plenty of goals, with the Ukrainian side netting 15 times in their last five matches – Alex Teixeira (10.1m) is our pick from their midfield, with 10 goals in eight league outings this term. Kevin De Bruyne (10.8m) is Manchester City’s in-form player as they travel to a Monchengladbach side that are 14th in the Bundesliga with only six points from seven matches.

The Forwards

In the forward positions, we’re going to look at some alternatives to obvious big-hitters Cristiano Ronaldo (16m), Robert Lewandowski (15.9m) and Luis Suarez (16m).

Porto’s Vincent Aboubakar can be picked up for only 8.9m ahead of Chelsea’s visit. He has four goals in six league outings as well as a brace in the Champions League opener against Dynamo Kiev and will look to profit from the Blues’ struggles in defence. The Portuguese side are unbeaten in their last 13 home league ties and the last seven Champions League matches in front of their own supporters.

Antoine Griezmann (12.7m) has three goals in as many home matches for Atletico Madrid in La Liga and also scored a brace against Galatasaray in the Champions League. The Frenchman now welcomes Benfica to the Vicente Calderon.

Seydou Doumbia (10.8m) has seven goals in eight appearances in all competitions for CSKA Moscow as PSV Eindhoven travel to the Russian capital.

Arsenal welcome Olympiakos to the Emirates and Theo Walcott (13.5m) is set to start with fellow striker Olivier Giroud suspended. Walcott has two goals in three league outings and also netted against Zagreb in the first round, while opponents Olympiakos conceded 71% possession against Bayern in a 3-0 loss – a repeat of which would play to the Gunners’ strengths.

Anthony Martial has had a promising start at Manchester United and is a perfect budget enabler at only £6.3m. Opponents Wolfsburg have conceded six goals in the last two matches, so could have a difficult time when they visit Old Trafford tomorrow evening.

UEFA Champions League - Matchday 2 Preview (compiled from fourfourtwo)

    Group E

    1. BATE Borisov v Roma

+ This is the first ever competitive game between BATE Borisov and Roma.

+ BATE have never beaten Italian opposition in European competition (D4 L4). They’ve failed to score in six of these eight games.

+ Roma have never kept a clean sheet in their last 15 Champions League games. The last one was against Arsenal in March 2009 (1-0).

+ Rudi Garcia has only won three of his 19 Champions League games as manager (D6 L10).

    .
    2. Barcelona v Bayer Leverkusen

+ Barcelona have won their last five Champions League games against Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals and conceding four. Leverkusen’s only CL win against the Blaugrana came in September 2001 but it was in Germany (2-1).

+ Barcelona have never failed to win their first two games in the group stages of the Champions League since the new format in 2003/04.

+ Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen have never won their first two games in the Champions League group stages.

    .
    Group F

+ Arsenal have only failed to score three times in their last 29 Champions League games.

+ Theo Walcott has failed to score in his last eight Champions League games at the Emirates, his last goal dating back to December 2010 against Partizan Belgrade.

+ Olympiakos have lost 50 Champions League games – only FC Porto have lost more in the competition (51).

    .
    2. Bayern Munich v Dinamo Zagreb

+ Bayern Munich have only failed to score once in their last 33 Champions League group games. It was against Manchester City in December 2011.

+ Thomas Müller has scored five goals and delivered two assists in his last four Champions League games at the Allianz Arena. He has netted 22 goals in the competition since 2012/13 – only Cristiano Ronaldo (42) and Lionel Messi (26) have done better over this period.

+ Zagreb fielded the two youngest players in this season’s Champions League on the opening matchday: Filip Benkovic (18 years and 2 months) and Ante Coric (18 years and 5 months).

    .
    Group G

    .
    2. Zenit St. Petersburg v Gent

+ This is the first ever competitive game between Zenit and Gent.

New on the FFS platform ,see a lot of people here consulting 'Doosra' ,find your views quite interesting.

So I think I'll pose a question to you as well.

Ayew to Payet for a hit?

Keeping in mind that if I go for this move, it does not leave me enough money to upgrade Targett/Oxford later on. Rest of the defense is Sagna/Azpi/Dawson

In that case, no. Also not really worth a hit. Tadic any good to you?

My policy is always to have a sound defence.

Like Tadic but I've got Pelle and don't want to double up on the Saints attack with those fixtures. Will probably look at him seriously after the fixtures turn though.
I'll probably stick with Ayew then and look to upgrade Targett/Oxford next week.

        Thanks buddy!

As much as I like Payet I wouldn't do it. Sagna will be a big rotation risk with Zabaleta coming back so you need the money to upgrade Targett/Oxford. 4 playing defenders is fine, 3 is not enough.

Seems like everyone is on the same page. Will stick with Ayew and upgrade my defense next week.

        Thanks!

You could of course look to downgrade Azpi in order to do Ayew-Payet, but sort your non playing defenders out first

Yeah, think that's my first priority, got rid of Gomez for Dawson this week with my FT.
Plans have really been hampered by injuries

What GK to rotate with begovic?

I don't think you need to rotate a Chelsea keeper. I have Begovic and I'm happy with him starting every week, 4.0 keeper on the bench.

Has Gomis genuinely gone off the boil or do people think this is just a blip? He has pens in his locker, and his vein of form was definitely there. If it goes and goes, that's fine. I don't want to transfer out to transfer back in.
