This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of Sergio Aguero’s projected four-week absence, Kevin De Bruyne – who converted two free-kicks for Belgium during the international break – sits atop the summit of our Captain Poll with 26% of the vote. The former Wolfsburg midfielder boasts three goals and two assists in his last trio of league starts and will fancy his chances at home to a Bournemouth outfit that’s notched just one clean sheet this campaign.

Alexis Sanchez (20%) is the second most popular captaincy choice. Although he travelled back from Peru on Thursday and has a crucial Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich in midweek, Sanchez is hard to ignore by virtue of his nine goals in five outings for club and country.

Graziano Pelle (15%) ranks top for total points (54) among all forwards this campaign ahead of Southampton’s home tie against Leicester. The aerially dominant frontman notched three goals and four assists in his previous three league starts and scored in his last outing for Italy. Sadio Mane (1%) joins him in the top ten, having chalked up two goals and three assists since Gameweek 6. Both players will be encouraged by the fact that the Foxes shipped ten goals in their previous four match-ups and have yet to register a clean sheet.

Diego Costa places fourth on his return from suspension with 6% of voters prioritising form over fixtures, given that the Spain international has recorded just one goal in six starts ahead of a home clash against Aston Villa. By that same token, Eden Hazard (4%) – who’s tallied one goal and two assists in his last three starts – could capitalise on the fact that the Villains conceded eight goals across their previous three road matches.

Daniel Sturridge has been backed by 4% of FFScout’s readership after bagging a brace in Gameweek 7. Jurgen Klopp’s first match at the helm pits Liverpool against a Tottenham Hotspur team that’s conceded a solitary goal in their last three showdowns at White Hart Lane. On the flip side, Harry Kane (3%) has netted just one goal in eight starts but will be emboldened in the knowledge that the Reds’ rearguard was breached ten times in the past five Gameweeks.

Even though he’s delivered attacking returns (three goals and two assists) in each of the last four Gameweeks, Dimitri Payet enjoys just 1% of the vote as West Ham United roll up at Crystal Palace. The twinkle-toed French playmaker locks horns with an Eagles backline that’s proved more resolute this campaign, conceding just two goals in their last four fixtures.

    Hennessy (Gomes)
    Bellerin/Dawson/Bertrand (Moreno/Simpson)
    Mane/Sanchez/Mahrez/KdB/Payet
    Vardy/Pelle (Ighalo)

Plan is to use the fund to upgrade int he next week or two, eg
    ighalo to lukaku
    Payet/mane to hazard
    Mahrez to walcott

Chelsea vs Aston Villa last season, Costa scored and had 5 shots on goal, and 4 shots on target but everytime he got injured/ banned he blanked in his first game back and there were some great fixtures that he blanked in. I.e.vs Newcastle & vs Burnley. Want to dismiss him but the fixture is so good this weekend

Costa could score or do nothing. Hazard is in good form, scored twice for his country. Seems like the kind of fixture he'll thrive in.

At the moment it is a gamble that you'll pick the weekend where it turns around for them.

No stat is suggesting it's a good move.

      Kolarov > Bellerin or Monreal.

IIRC, you also have a wc in hand (as do I). Any thoughts about using it now? I am highly considering it (am currently on -8 with Kolarov but could bench for Francis/Prodl, or WC and pretend it's gw11-ish).

    Sigh, pages flying. Last attempt.

Would you do fodder striker > Costa (-4) and bench Mahrez for a 3-4-3? Current team:

    Begovic
    Skrtel Dawson Naughton
    Sanchez Mane Payet Ayew Mahrez
    Pelle Vardy

    Coloccini; fodder striker; Kolarov

My thoughts are that 1) fancy Chelsea getting a result this weekend and the fixture is traditionally quite high scoring at SB and 2) I keep Mahrez instead of selling him for KDB as Mahrez has a good fixture next GW

    Appreciate some thoughts pls. Thanks!

IDK about both. I would take Lukaku...for me, I just need to see Costa and Chelsea produce before acquiring them. However, the one advantage of Costa not producing, is it is quite easy to transfer him out to a less expensive player.

So, I need to rip my team apart as the majority are injured. I've already played my wild card, so I need to take a 20 point hit. I'm doing it, so no need to talk me out of it.

The question I have, is who do I replace Kolorov and Aguero with? It basically means I can have anyone I want. I could even take out Westwood and get KDB in too - hell, what's another 4 points when you're already losing 20?

I have 19 mill to spend on a striker and a defender or
23.5 mill to spend on a striker, midfielder and defender.

Who are the best players to get for this weekend? One will be captain (and I already have Hazard and Sanchez).

    Defense is:

    Darmian - Francis - Kolorov - Gomez - Staylor

    a) take another -4 to shift Kolorov

    b) play 10 players this week

    c) AoA and Westwood vs Chelsea steps in

    d) take another -4, shift Westwood ----> Fletcher/Davis and go AoA

    Vardy or Mahrez as starter?

Mahrez I'd say. Vardy will sub in if he doesn't play, but you'd want Mahrez on the pitch to get the most from Vardy I think...it probably doesn't matter a great deal.

Its good to see Mourinho will finally keep his gob shut...12 month good behavior would help him learn to speak responsibly

The accusation that Chelsea should have got penalty and refree bias when Southampton themselves could have got 3 was preposterous

Walcott makes your squad stronger not your team imo. San(c)hez is too good not to have him so yes he is aguero level essential.
