This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of Sergio Aguero’s projected four-week absence, Kevin De Bruyne – who converted two free-kicks for Belgium during the international break – sits atop the summit of our Captain Poll with 26% of the vote. The former Wolfsburg midfielder boasts three goals and two assists in his last trio of league starts and will fancy his chances at home to a Bournemouth outfit that’s notched just one clean sheet this campaign.

Alexis Sanchez (20%) is the second most popular captaincy choice. Although he travelled back from Peru on Thursday and has a crucial Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich in midweek, Sanchez is hard to ignore by virtue of his nine goals in five outings for club and country.

Graziano Pelle (15%) ranks top for total points (54) among all forwards this campaign ahead of Southampton’s home tie against Leicester. The aerially dominant frontman notched three goals and four assists in his previous three league starts and scored in his last outing for Italy. Sadio Mane (1%) joins him in the top ten, having chalked up two goals and three assists since Gameweek 6. Both players will be encouraged by the fact that the Foxes shipped ten goals in their previous four match-ups and have yet to register a clean sheet.

Diego Costa places fourth on his return from suspension with 6% of voters prioritising form over fixtures, given that the Spain international has recorded just one goal in six starts ahead of a home clash against Aston Villa. By that same token, Eden Hazard (4%) – who’s tallied one goal and two assists in his last three starts – could capitalise on the fact that the Villains conceded eight goals across their previous three road matches.

Daniel Sturridge has been backed by 4% of FFScout’s readership after bagging a brace in Gameweek 7. Jurgen Klopp’s first match at the helm pits Liverpool against a Tottenham Hotspur team that’s conceded a solitary goal in their last three showdowns at White Hart Lane. On the flip side, Harry Kane (3%) has netted just one goal in eight starts but will be emboldened in the knowledge that the Reds’ rearguard was breached ten times in the past five Gameweeks.

Even though he’s delivered attacking returns (three goals and two assists) in each of the last four Gameweeks, Dimitri Payet enjoys just 1% of the vote as West Ham United roll up at Crystal Palace. The twinkle-toed French playmaker locks horns with an Eagles backline that’s proved more resolute this campaign, conceding just two goals in their last four fixtures.

Lost on last post, genuinely curious:

Can someone pls explain to me why Bellerin is on the watchlist and not Monreal, and why everyone shipping Kolarov off for an Arsenal defender is going for Bellerin instead of Monreal?

Before you tell me it's because Bellerin is more attacking, pls note that Monreal has one more assist. And as any Arsenal fan can tell you, he has a much better final ball than Bellerin and should've had another assist vs Utd (Ozil shot straight at De Gea)

Furthermore, Arsenal defenders gain most of their points through clean sheets and Monreal has the highest BPS.

Do you watch Arsenal matches? No offence, but ask any Arsenal fan and most will tell you Monreal was our best defender last year. Or go have a look at /r/gunners, we all really rate Monreal very highly. Yes Bellerin is great, but he's still a young lad.

I remember when he joined there was a Spanish journalist on Five Live saying that Arsenal had just snapped up the best defender in the Spanish league. Then came the injuries and rotation - which I think have stuck with people. As a footballer, I agree, he is very good. As a Fantasy prospect there really isn't much in it between Bellerin and Monreal though.

Same I like Monreal more but I can see why people may think there's isn't much between them.

But what's weird here is that virtually everyone only mentions Bellerin, without giving Monreal much thought.

        10 years, 4 months ago

Well the stats say that Monreal clearly gets more BAPS.

Attacking wise its not as clear cut. People seem to think that Bellerin is far more of an attacking threat than Monreal. Yes Bellerin has more chances created, and more passes in final third. But Monreal has more touches in penalty area and more assists.

Hence in overall, I'll go for Monreal. I don't mind people saying they're on par and equally good. But I find it absolutely weird, everyone's mentioning Bellerin but not giving Monreal a thought.

Someone already did a hot topic comparison of Arsenal defenders a couple of days ago, and gave quite clear evidence that Monreal is better or at least on par with Bellerin.

Don't see a point of repeating that argument. just curious why no one's buying it.

Personally I don't there is much between them , the ay are both excellent going forward and in defence. Bellerin has more attacking threat purely because of his speed and with Ramsay in front is afforded more chances to bomb forward and cross the ball into the box.

      1. samuelhzb
        • 11 Years

I agree with Bellerin's threat but I don't agree in the sense that, he's not very efficient in converting that to points.

Nonetheless agree there's nothing much between them. But just curious why Monreal is hardly mentioned.

do you think Mahrez will play? im already on a -4 and i can only field in exactly 11 players, in those 11 are Evans and Mahrez who are doubtful to play. I'm now considering to do -12 replace Kun and Kolarov for long term targets

Hahaha, good to know I'm not alone.

I'm pretty sure Mahrez will get the nod this weekend, so the main concern should be Evans. I'm on -4 only and reluctant on taking another one. But if you don't mind another hit, you should do Kolarov ➡ Monreal/Bellerin/Bertrand and you're good to go.

I guess if you look at it more long term the -4 for Kolarov would be ok.
