Liverpool’s fit-again captain makes an instant impact on his first league start under Jurgen Klopp. Bournemouth claim another big scalp by seeing off United at Dean Court, whilst Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to bench Kevin de Bruyne and Aleksandar Kolarov gives us an early heads-up on festive rotation.

The Player

A goal and assist in his first league start under Jurgen Klopp immediately brought Jordan Henderson back onto Fantasy managers’ radars.

Sidelined since sustaining a foot injury in Gameweek 2, the Reds skipper was afforded a brief second-half sub appearance against Swansea in Gameweek 14 before Klopp named him in his first XI for the weekend visit of West Brom.

With maximum bonus also accrued against the Baggies, Henderson racked up 13 points to quickly serve a reminder of his six goals and ten assists in the 2014/15 campaign. Having dropped from 7.0 to 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, it may be time to start considering him again.

Crucially for Klopp, his captain’s high-energy style of play looks a perfect match for his gegenpressing approach and a fully-fit Henderson – like he was under Rodgers – will surely be immune to rotation in the centre of the park.

Certainly, the midfielder’s showing against Tony Pulis’ side bodes well for his Fantasy potential under the new manager. Although there’s a chance that the German may ration Henderson’s Christmas minutes as a result of his stint on the sidelines, clashes against Watford, Leicester, Sunderland and West Ham could afford him the platform to push on from that Baggies’ display and finally find himself back into our plans.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over Man United helped Bournemouth climb two points clear of the drop zone as Eddie Howe’s side showed their Gameweek 15 triumph at Stamford Bridge was no fluke.

The Cherries’ heroes of the day, Junior Stanislas and Joshua King, are clearly thriving in Howe’s new-look set-up and their recent hauls have proved worthy of starting roles in our XIs. The former has chipped in with three goals and an assist in the last four, whilst King’s role as the lone striker has helped him produce two goals and an assist across the same period.

Although Stanislas (4.2) and King (4.6) have emerged as the choice routes into Howe’s attack, both Dan Gosling and Matt Ritchie have shown plenty of goal threat since the return of Harry Arter in Gameweek 11. Indeed, Gosling, Ritchie, Stanislas and King have all produced 16 attempts on goal apiece in the last six matches, underlining their points potential.

If King can shrug off a hamstring problem sustained against United, Howe’s side will have every reason for optimism heading into the busy festive period. The last two results have clearly shown they are more than capable of upsetting any opponent and with home clashes against the likes of Palace, West Ham and Norwich in the next six, could continue to offer excellent value for money.

The Talking Point

After watching his side lose to Stoke in the previous Gameweek, Manuel Pellegrini put the blame firmly down to fatigue. With so many injuries to contend with, the City boss was unable to rest and rotate with regularity and instead relied heavily on a small core of players over the past few months.

On Saturday, Pellegrini finally took action. With the likes of Gael Clichy and David Silva fully fit, the Chilean dropped Aleksandar Kolarov and Kevin de Bruyne to the bench for the visit of managerless Swansea after both had started the midweek win over Borussia Monchengladbach. As City huffed and puffed to a late 2-1 win, De Bruyne owners were left with a one-point second-half cameo, whilst Kolarov warmed the bench from start to finish.

Given that next Monday’s match at Arsenal is the first of eight fixtures in 26 days for City, we’ll have to prepare for more of the same. It remains to be seen just how often Sergio Aguero will feature, then, whilst the Gunners’ recent results will perhaps persuade Arsene Wenger to court caution with the fitness of Alexis Sanchez.

Pellegrini’s team sheet served a timely reminder of the need for strong benches at this time of year. Come the festive period, our squads are subject to the rotational whims of top-flight managers more than any other point in the season as the fixtures arrive thick and fast.

As the schedule picks up pace, there’s also potential suspensions to consider and plan around. Jamie Vardy – owned by over 56% FPL managers – now sits just one caution short of a single-match ban after earning his fourth yellow of the season last night. Should he be booked in any of the next three league fixtures before the limit is extended to ten yellows on New Year’s Day, he’ll topple off the Tightrope.

Fortunately, the absence of both Aguero and Sanchez has, for once, come in handy, with plenty of cash subsequently freed up just as the schedule picks up pace.

Their injuries, allied with the raft of value options on offer, means that this year, arguably more than ever, Fantasy managers are well-positioned to strengthen our squads and back-up options, allowing us to plan for these worst-case scenarios in order to navigate the tricky Christmas period.

Best 5th defender? I dont really want to spend much more than 4 given i will probably never start him. But think its time to replace STaylor, given xmas rotation. Simpson looks the best bet, but can't really see any clean sheets.

Johnson has 64 points and plays the wing so chances of assists is high
On the other hand Eric Pieters has 58 points but has secured the most number of bonus points out of all defenders.
Or there is Wollscheid who I can pick up for 4.4m

What should I do with this crew, Galloway outs a priority for holidays as he wont be playing with Baines back.....still not thrilled with Ayew and the Swans turmoil. Liked how Henderson looked playing in pivot, and wonder if he is back on pens, kicks and corners....as that double pivot seems to be BAPs magnet with B2B mids, just like Rambo.

2FT, just Galloway out or make 2 trades?

Mourinho is very stubborn, he won't change something even if the world and his wife tell him he's wrong. If he thinks it's right, he sticks by it

Too cocky attitude with the young players. Sold KDB, Lukaku over the last couple of years, sold Mata to accomodate Oscar as No 10 who does not play anyway, and everyone out on loan.

Also, how does Loftus-Cheek not even get a bench spot?

They clearly stopped doping the players. Why? I dont know. Something behind the scenes but there whole squad has been 10 to 15% behind everyone else since the start of the season.

I think the crappy way he treated the (very popular) team doctor at the start of the season (someone who had no power to fight back, and who he unfairly blamed for the result of the game) has ruined his relationship with the team. I really think the unravelling started there, with his failure to man up and apologise. Contempt is a corrosive emotion in any relationship. I think some of the players felt contempt for his behaviour. And after that, everything got worse, all the relationships with players started to unravel.

As a Chelsea fan, I am pretty shocked and embarrassed at what is happening. The players are more than capable of winning these fixtures but for whatever reason they can't pressure opponents like last year.

Hazard is a big problem, he ran at players, drew fouls and penalties all season last year. He has yet to show the same form. William is now trying to fill his place and Fabregas is also playing terribly. Throw in the fact the defenders are mediocre at best this year and you have a side that can't compete with the strong teams in the Premier League.
Mourinho isn't helping but understandably he is frustrated with his players. Easy to point fingers at him, but I don't think he is to blame for lack of form from his players.

Blind, stupid arrogance. Starting with Mourinho, and pervading most but not all of the team downwards.

Players started out resting on their laurels in the league, now that they don't believe they can win the league they seem disinterested and are also playing too nervously.

Compare the performances in the Champions League and League and it's clear to see that it's not that they can't perform but that they aren't delivering in the competition they know they can't win.

Taking the championship and defending the championship are two very different enterprises. He did it once at Chelsea, if I recall, but I think his genius comes from arriving at a place in a bit of disarray and then getting the most from underperforming or unfocused squads, both through the shrewd business of player transfers as well as tactical maneuvering in order to build a fortress or a perfect counter punch or late match dead ball theatrics.

Maintaining that perch is quite difficult, and I wonder if he has it in him to make adjustments to system and personnel from the top, which is crucial in defending a title IMO. I don't mean he is not smart enough, I just wonder if it interests him in the same way as arriving from out of town and imposing his system.

Makes the GOATness of SAF even greater for me, and I trust in Arsene above all else.

Unless you have to get Kun, I'd go Delph and Westwood to Henderson/Alli and Ramsey the following week. I hate having a week bench for holiday rotation, like the KdB rest last week, no player is exempt from a day off.

Dawson isn't a must for WBA. Less baps for more goal threat. McAuley gets some cards tho. Just go Evans if you're short for Dawson funds, and hope Evans stays injury free

    DDG-HNSY
    Coleman-Moreno-Monreal-Dawson-Janmaat
    Ozil-Ramsey-Barkley-Hazard-Mane
    Lukaku-Ighalo-Pelle

I'm getting killed with all those around me in my ML owning Vahrez.

Mane/Pelle defo need to go - should i straight switch to Mahrez/Vardyfor a -4 so i stop bleeding or is more surgery required.

    1 FT, no WC.

Clichy might start the tougher games and Kolarov the easier games where they require his attacking potential. Having Kolarov rotating with a cheap defender on Man City's tough games could be an option

My rival pulls away another 20 points to make his lead 120 odd now! He thinks it's all over, but I've got news for him....

Careful Xmas planning, my squad's at last in good shape, bench boost and triple captain in my pocket - it's not over yet boyo!!

My worst ever season but strangely enjoying it in a macabre kind of way. Had my worst ever rank in 10 years last season of 176k, only second time I've been outside top 50k. Lots to do to turn it around but I'm confident I can.

Keep chipper all you guys that are struggling. The cream always rise to the top! Roll on Saturday! 🙂
