As always on a Monday afternoon, we cast our eye over the main talking points from the weekend’s round of fixtures. Sergio Aguero’s imperious form, Dele Alli’s value in midfield, Roberto Firmino’s improving displays and Charlie Austin’s instant impact for Southampton all find their way onto our lunchtime menu.

Aguero is already close to essential status…
A brace against West Ham continued the City striker’s fine recent form as he took his tally to five goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks. Aguero was neck-and-neck in our Captain Poll with Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku over the last two rounds of fixtures but swept aside both their challenges, serving a clear reminder of his unparalleled capabilities to serve up explosive Fantasy hauls. In this sort of form, going without looks a reckless tactic – already, over 64,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped him up since the weekend as City prepare for a trip to Sunderland next Tuesday evening.

…and Alli has timed his ascent to coincide…
The Tottenham midfielder continues to offer outstanding value across the Fantasy games, courtesy of a goal and assist away to Palace. With the maximum bonus also thrown in, Alli’s 13-point haul was his highest of the season and took his tally to six goals and as many assists – he’s now up to 99 points, just six off Kevin De Bruyne in the midfield standings. At a price of just 5.7, Alli looks the ready-made enabler for those looking to free up cash in the centre of the park in order to accommodate Aguero.

Payet’s brilliance promises points…
Although the Frenchman drew a third blank in four since returning from injury at home to City last Saturday, there’s no question that Payet’s return has improved the Hammers’ potential. Slaven Bilic’s side have scored 32 times in the 16 matches Payet has been involved in, compared to five goals in seven league outings without him. With Villa, Norwich and Sunderland in the next four, Payet’s star is surely on the rise, despite his failure to deliver against Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

We’re willing Koeman to retain his formation…
It’s three wins and as many clean sheets for Southampton after they emerged from Old Trafford with a 1-0 victory. Ronald Koeman’s decision to roll out a 3-5-2 in recent weeks has proved the catalyst for this turnaround as the Saints arrested a dire run of form. With the schedule turning in their favour from Gameweek 25, Koeman’s charges are edging back onto our radars again, with the 3.8-priced Matt Targett looking a ready-made enabler since being handed the left wing-back berth in Gameweek 21.

Austin hasn’t lost the knack…
Eased into action off the bench after a recent hamstring injury for QPR, the Saints’ new signing wasted no time in getting amongst the points. On as a sub for the ineffectual Sadio Mane, Austin needed just eight minutes to bag the winner, serving a timely reminder of the talent that scored 18 times for the relegated Hoops last season. At a price of 7.0 in FPL, he’s already thrown his hat into the ring as a mid-price option for our three-man frontlines.

Firmino’s flair is fitting in…
Two goals and an assist in Liverpool’s stunning 5-4 win at Norwich has sparked a major bandwagon for the Brazilian. With Christian Benteke back on the bench, Firmino looks to have established himself as Jurgen Klopp’s preferred central option in the Reds’ front three, with an 18-point Carrow Road return his third double-figure haul in 11 starts under the German. Over 80,000 FPL managers have been quick to acquire his services – more than any other player – ahead of a kind looking schedule from Gameweek 25 onwards.

Vardy and Mahrez aren’t done yet…
A 3-0 win over Stoke suggests that Leicester’s temporary blip could be behind them. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy have been subject to significant recent sales but both got amongst the points this weekend, courtesy of an assist and goal respectively. With Vardy edging back towards full fitness following recent groin surgery, the Foxes’ main men could continue to punish those former owners as Claudio Ranieri’s men look to strengthen their spot at the summit.

Van Aanholt needs defensive reinforcements…
The Sunderland left-back maintained his incredible attacking form by finding the net for the fourth successive Gameweek. Handed license to raid forward by Big Sam, Van Aanholt’s nine-point haul against Bournemouth means he has now averaged 5.3 points per appearance since the new manager was appointed – that’s despite the Black Cats’ failure to keep a single clean sheet since Gameweek 14. If Allardyce’s side can step up their resilience, Van Aanholt could become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Pulis will prioritise safety over goals….
Prior to the goalless draw against Villa, the Baggies boss reiterated that his sole concern is to reach the magic 40-point mark and ensure his side’s survival. Whilst they failed to get the better of their Midlands rivals, the 0-0 stalemate means that West Brom have conceded just once in their last three home matches and are now just 12 points from Pulis’ points target. As he looks to grind out the results in order to ensure safety, clean sheets could be on the cards once again.

Guidolin may just revive Ayew…
The Ghana international kicked off his career under Francesco Guidolin with a goal and assist away to Everton as the Swans chalked up a much-needed win on their travels. Put into perspective, Ayew had produced just a single away goal (at Villa in Gameweek 10) since the season opener at Chelsea, with the vast majority of his points arriving at the Liberty. Now up to joint-fourth in the midfield standings, he was fielded up front once again at Goodison as the new man in charge retained a midfield diamond, suggesting he could prove the main beneficiary of the Italian’s appointment.

Costa’s goals and fitness are back on the agenda…
The Chelsea striker once again proved the undoing of Arsenal by grabbing the only goal of yesterday’s head-to-head at the Emirates. It’s five strikes and two assists in just five league outings under Guus Hiddink for Costa, who seems to have belatedly rediscovered his attacking potential in what has been a thoroughly underwhelming second season in the Premier League. Once again, though, Costa’s propensity for picking up injuries saw him forced off on 67 minutes with a knee problem – for all his improvement, though, those knock and niggles, allied with his penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath, is likely to keep him on the Fantasy periphery.

I made a xGC (Expected Goals Conceded) form ratings list (last 6 weeks).
What is xG? It is a quantitative + qualitative metric used for measuring sum of quality of chances. For further reading - http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2015/10/19/9295905/premier-league-projections-and-new-expected-goals

Actually I made this last week but I did not add fixture difficulty and I was told that it would be better to add fixture difficulty. Here is the result -

    GW 18-23

    TOT 0.62
    SOT 0.64
    MCI 0.67
    WAT 0.72
    AVL 0.74
    WBA 0.82
    CHE 0.84
    LIV 0.85
    BOU 0.86
    MUN 0.88
    LEI 0.92
    ARS 0.93
    EVE 0.94
    STO 0.95
    NOR 0.97
    SUN 0.99
    CPL 1
    WHM 1.14
    SWA 1.39
    NEW 1.4

LOWER the number , BETTER the defence
(Spurs are best , Newcastle are worst LAST 6 weeks)

This one is WITHOUT fixture difficulty -
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/12497039

Fixture ratings are based on this -
    http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2014/2/12/5404348/english-premier-league-shot-statistics

    Note:

Fixture difficulty is based on the entire season. Last 6 weeks have seen less *xG* scored , and seen an underperformance by the *bigger teams* , so the ratings are smaller than the one without fixture difficulty.

Lastly , what do you make of this? Does it match your eye test? If no , why not? I have only recently made the ticker , so I would love all the feedback I can get . Thanks! 🙂

I would say so. Tottenham especially have been excellent from GW 1 , Southampton have only recently picked up 🙂

Southampton's WITH *fixture difficulty* stats are boosted by that anomalous 4-0 victory against Arsenal but still their numbers are very strong regardless but "bulk up" strong 😉

I was working on something similar that takes into account many metrics from attack and defence for each team. Was interested to know how they compare to those.

This shows that Spurs attack is very important ie. Kane! 😀

That reassures me. I'm a bit behind on defence, seeing everyone have expensive backlines with the likes of at least 3 6m's in one team.

It's definitely nice to have good and consistent defenders but it's feels even better having cheap defenders scoring better than those.

      Butland (Eliot)

      Williams, Bellerin, Sagna (Francis, Moreno)

      Ozil Payet Mahrez KDB (King)

      Aguero Lukaku Kane

      A) KDB out for Sanchez (leaving me with 0 in the bank)
      B) KDB out for Alli (leaving 5.1m)
      C) KDB out for Firmno (leaving 2.9m)

Not many of the top European league's top teams have regressed quite as much as the top team's from the PL (apart from Milan & Inter) but if we compare the top 4 from say 08/09 to this season's or even last season's its ridiculous.

The 08/09 top 4 would destroy this current crop. The quality has dropped so much and it's so evident from performances in the CL!

HOWEVER the PL now is as exciting as ever! I think I prefer lower quality at the top and more competitive league than other way round...Anyone disagree?

Agreed, much prefer it the way it is this season, though it's bad for the PL globally as the top teams won't challenge for the CL, and the European coefficient will be under threat.

My worry exactly, I don't mind not being successful in Europe but it means we won't be able to attract the top players to the prem. In fact, I don't think we can attract any right now and there's a massive shortage of WC players in the league. Can probably count in one hand (outfield).

I think Guardiola's arrival will be huge, he will build a really top team, and others will have to up their game. It seems that when a top team regresses, the rest follow.

United, Chelsea and Liverpool have all definitely regressed.

Spurs, Man City and Arsenal are still on the upward trajectory imo, but injuries are holding the latter two back from really dominating.

Imagine if Arsenal and City had no injuries, they'd be pretty far ahead (Kompany, Aguero, Silva, Coquelin, Sanchez, Ramsey, Cazorla)

Not disagreeing, but IMHO, the top European leagues other than BPL have become more monopolistic as ever - Bayern, Barcelona, Real/Atletico Madrid, allowing more focus on UCL performances.

The equal rewards at the end of each Season given to each team in the Prem allows the league to have a balance. Also, with the competitiveness of the league, we now see Leicester at the top, and Chelsea near relegation. The competitiveness of the league probably forces the top tier UCL BPL teams to focus more on the BPL, and are unlike other top of the league teams which can steamroll every team below them.

Very fair point. But just try and compare the number of world class players at those teams vs our top teams.

              it's not even close!

The thing is it's too easy to win the league/cups for them, thus its more attractive for world class players to want to experience continuous success.

Schweinsteiger for example, left Bayern, who was winning trophies left and right, even the UCL. Now he's in ManU who are struggling against mid-low table teams.

As there are more world class players, the more attractive it is.

I think Schweinsteiger wanted to experience the Prem and ended up getting slapped in the face.

Schweiny only left Bayern because his form dropped ridiculously. He barely played for them season before he left.

                    Wow, never knew that.

                    I agree, even Pedro.

Players like Sanchez, Pedro, Ozil, Di Maria, lived in the shadow of the likes of Messi & Ronaldo.

Falcao though. Jesus that guy went down.

It's changing a little bit in Spain, there's a new TV deal coming in. Atletico winning the league massively shook things up, no one saw that coming

Yea. Simone was immense for them, bringing in great talent, and nurturing them allowing Atletico to become the dark horses of the UCL & La Liga.

Yeah I really don't care about the regression of the top 4, if it means (which as you say it does) the excitement factor increases. I don't even care about English clubs performing badly in the CL - I get much more enjoyment watching Bayern/Real/Barca now than I ever did watching Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool/United in the semis every bloody year

That was awful. Saw i got up to 12K flying high and just continually crashed every week. Ozil killed me, buried me, then danced on my grave... then I got him in.

Agonising decision of who to get in for Sterling... The last transfer of my clear-out of underperforming dross - well until I start on the defence anyway!

          a; Payet

          b; Firmino

          c; Wait a week and get Sanchez ( + Kolarov>budget).

The first two appeal more, as they leave me 1.2m or so left ITB. Any thoughts?
