It’s time to turn to our usual pre-Gameweek members article next, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

With a home match against Aston Villa on his agenda, Sergio Aguero is the runaway winner of this week’s Captain Poll.

Despite blanking at Anfield in midweek, the Argentine has still served up six goals in as many matches and has been backed up a massive 72% of voters against a side that already has one foot in the Championship and has picked up three points from their last 13 away matches.

Given that overwhelming margin of victory in the Poll, it’ll be a very brave Fantasy manager that goes against the City striker in Gameweek 29 as Manuel Pellegrini’s men attempt to salvage their flagging title bid.

Harry Kane is placed in second spot with a mere 5% of votes ahead of the north London derby. A win over injury-hit Arsenal would take Spurs six points clear of their rivals, though Kane’s lack of consistency at home – producing points in only five of 14 appearances at White Hart Lane this season – is a real cause for concern.

With eight goals and four assists in ten, Diego Costa (3%) has the form to rival Aguero as Chelsea welcome Stoke to the Bridge. Guus Hiddink conceded earlier today that he’ll start the Spain international tomorrow but went on to say that he may not play the full 90 minutes ahead of next week’s crucial Champions League clash with PSG – thus placing unnecessary doubt over Costa’s armband claim.

The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson (2%) could be one to consider as Swansea play host to Norwich. With five goals and an assist in nine, he was afforded a second-half sub outing in the 2-1 win at Arsenal and will be fully refreshed to torment the Canaries’ dire defence.

Roberto Firmino, meanwhile, is backed by a mere 1% ahead of a trip to Palace, despite bagging four goals and as many assists in his last five outings. Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez are also being overlooked as Arsenal and Leicester hit the road in a bid to reignite their respective title tilts.

Are the current standings backed by the underlying statistics? Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more clarity on the situation.

So I’ve figured out my punishment for what I did.
Ozil to Silva, I’ll lose a good bit of value on that one.

I guess hoping Villa is the opportunity to find form. Sooner or late, they find their form. The aggressive play is to get the player that few own right when it happens. The more conservative play is to wait for proof and the climb on the train right afterwards. This is the general fantasy sports dilemma, no?

for the same reason I went for Hazard when he had a good run of games but pretty much no form to go on - we like to go with the security of a player we have relied on well in the past for an on paper easy game.

I've been burnt by that Hazard experience so for me personally I'd like to see some form before I go mining for Silva. His goal attempt stats are particularly poor too.

Yeah! I would wait for some form to be shown before getting him in...easily Yaya can have better form than Silva in the 2 GWS

I stayed clear of Hazard but I haven't made a punt for at least 2 weeks now. I guess I'm hoping Ozil blanks away to Spurs and then Arsenal beat Hull. Obviously its a massive risk, but most of my moves are.

I thought Silva was fantastic in the UCL game and the cup final. Two games of good form, nice fixtures, pedigree. Maybe he'll have better luck against Villa.

Cup form can but rarely translates to Prem Lg form. Impossible to compare a cup final with getting the motivation to score against Championship side Villa.

I swore I wouldn't let price changes affect me too much. I got Kun in last night but for Costa over Kane. I did last night as he was rising. If I ignored that I would have seen the presser from Hiddink saying Costa would play, even though he said he wouldn't, and got rid of Kane.

Here's a couple of common benching dilemmas I imagine a few have this week. I know I do

Bench one of Payet or Alli

Bench one of Fuchs/Huth or VVD/other Southampton defender

I'm currently looking to bench Alli over Payet, due to Payet's strong away record and Alli's poor home record. Everton's recent defensive form is a worry but they do seem to still concede.

Fuchs gets the nod for me so far over VVD. With clean sheets hard to predict in both games Fuch's superior assist potential has the edge for me.

    Which would you do?

I agree with you I would also play Payet and Fuchs over Alli and VVD.

My Benching dilemma is bench Townsend or Willian?

Bench Townsend....not certain to start. Plus Willian was rested midweek - I actually think Willian is one of the strongest picks this week - you should definitely play him.

Explaing this Siggy situation for me please. Yes, he has fixtures and form but those Swans attacking stats doesn't convince me. He relies too much on set pices imo and Swans rarely scores more than one goal.

Norwich might be tough game and its relegation battle after all.

To answer your question probably Alli. Fitness conserns, regressed based on stats.

Its Fuchs for me - I just put Huth in as he's another popular Leicester defender that others are likely to own. I agree if it was Huth I'd bench him - Fuchs assist potential though gives him the slight edge over VVD for me.

Re Sigurdsson - three goals and an assist and several bonus over the last five games plus very strong underlying stats. See this table that I'm about to find.....

word of caution....due to blanks and doubles from here on you need t be sorting by matches not gameweeks.

I know that doesn't effect Swansea in this case but it will skew all your tables unless they are sorted by matches.

Also need to factor in opposition. They had Watford at home if you go back to six. Four includes the Arsenal game where Siggy only played 45 mins (and still got an assist).

Get rid of the two Doncaster Belle defenders for a start.

    Repost from old article:

Would you say that if one team thrashes opponent scoring 4 goals or more, it might be statistically more likely that they concede 1 than for a 2-0 or 3-0 victory, due to early subs and losing concentration (obviously thinking about City vs Villa here 🙂 )

Just doing some long term research. Asume the following...

    - ARS, CHE, CRY and WHU make the cup semi and hence, have a blank GW35
    - This means EVE, MUN, BOU and SUN also have a blank GW35
    - All blank GW35 fixtures to be made up in GW37
    - MCI/NEW fixture from GW27 is rescheduled to GW34
    - Leave aside the merseyside derby fixture from GW27 for the moment

That gives you the following DGW fixtures

    ARS: sun, mci
    BOU: CHE, WBA
    CHE: bou, sun
    CRY: EVE, STO
    EVE: cry, lei
    MUN: WHU, nor
    SUN: ARS, CHE
    WHU: mun, SWA

There is enough quality fixtures (united, west ham, everton, chelsea, palace even) and quantity in the above list that BB could work just as well here as it could in GW34.

All speculation right now I know, but always be prepared. 🙂

    5. Pasqualinho

If what you say comes true, the league will almost certaiinly use the SF weekend to reschedule the Sun v Eve game, because they will both have a blank weekend. So bear in mind that Eve and Sun may not blank in GW35.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

Not that this affects the DGW37 fixtures you listed - it just means that Sun and Eve don't blank in 35.

Haven't played aggressive/ risky FPL in a while but im thinking of taking a -4 this week

Barkley and Payet -> Siggy and Silva

I know the obvious call would be to just do Barkley to Silva and keep Payet for another week but I can't afford that unfortunately.

    Worth the punt?

    McCarthy, Alli, Dier, Bellerin

Ighalo to Aguero requires some extra cash, and unfortunately a hit this week. Is it worth it for any of these?

    A) Eriksen to a 7.7 (Siggy)

    B) Alli to a 4.9 (Lanzini/Lingard/Hoolahan)

    C) Dawson to a 4.2 (Targett/Olsson)

    D) Arnautovic to a 5.6

    D) Don't take a hit, don't get Aguero this week, and save ft
