We draw the curtain on Gameweek 2 in suitable fashion, by collecting our thoughts on the player, the team and the key talking point.

The Player

There really is no contest.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already taken the Premier League by storm, muscling his way past shell-shocked centre backs and into our Fantasy line-ups.

Hands up, I was initially fooled by his languid style and ageing legs. I doubted he could immediately click in a Manchester United side that almost had to learn how to attack with purpose again after Louis van Gaal’s laboured tenancy.

But Zlatan has let the goals do the talking, which is just fine when you have Paul Pogba doing the rest.

As I’ve already mentioned on these pages, it is Pogba’s performance and the way in which he transformed the United machine that convinced me to shed my doubts on the Swede.

It’s difficult to see United failing to control and dominate the majority of teams with Pogba stationed in the double pivot. His energy will surely be the spark to drive United forward and, in doing so, ensure that Ibrahimovic is readily supplied with opportunities in the box.

He’s already proven just how deadly he can be with service and with spot-kicks now thought to be assured, Ibrahimovic is just too intoxicating to ignore.

The Team

Having given Hull City their moment in the sun in Gameweek 1, Mike Phelan’s side soaked it up, offering up another nomination a week later after an impressive win at Swansea City.

But instead we will turn to another promoted side.

Burnley battled against improbable odds to conjure a victory against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, offering us another reminder that, early in the season, there is often reliable value amongst the new arrivals from the Championship.

Sean Dyche’s side have been here before; they could, and perhaps should have survived in 2014/15.

The Clarets boss now knows exactly how to approach games like the Liverpool encounter: shelve ambition, strangle the centre of the pitch and break with speed and purpose.

It was a policy employed even in the Championship at times, as Dyche exploited Sam Vokes’ physicality alongside the pace and clinical finishing of Andre Gray.

Both opened their accounts on Saturday. Both will look to reach double figures and provide strong FPL value.

Then, in goal, there is Tom Heaton.

Already ranked as the top keeper, the Burnley skipper looks to be a gift. A goalkeeper who will churn out regular save points, behind ten players who, at times, will be drilled to contain opponents in order to earn a result at all costs.

The Talking Point

We have to return to Ibrahimovic.

There’s no doubt we have to acknowledge the excitement he has already brought to our season but, at the same time, we should also take time to consider how, together with Sergio Aguero, he’s already forced our hand.

It seems we have little choice but to plump for the Manchester pairing in our attacks.

In doing so, we’re taking debilitating chunks out of our budget and restricting, if not killing, our ability to react when midfield heavy-hitters start delivering.

Should Alexis Sanchez, Kevin de Bruyne and Dimitri Payet hit the heights again, many of us will be hamstrung and unable to exploit their form.

That is, unless we dare to rid ourselves of Ibrahimovic or Aguero. That seems unlikely.

Those chasing gaps, or even those who refuse to bend to the template attack, at least have a hope on the horizon. The heavy-hitting midfielders will eventually become effective differentials.

Two Gameweeks down and it’s difficult to see any asset competing with the output of Aguero and Ibrahimovic. Right now our only worry is deciding which of the two strikers earns the armband.

It’s up to the likes of Sanchez, De Bruyne and Payet to see if they can burden us with any further concerns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Heaton(H Chel) v Foster(H Boro)

One would think Heaton will get more saves but Foster better chance of a CS. not convinced they will tho.
    Already missed two 10pointers Grhhh

    Swaying towards Heaton here. Thoughts?

I'd keep an eye on the Gray situation. If no ban appears and you want him for Hull then maybe keep him. Whatever you do dont waste the transfer so worst cause Lenihan to Amat to get another playing player.

You've got a good problem, comrade 666. Maybe downgrade Eriksen (Sterling) or Townsend (Bolasie) to strategically create some cash for an upgrade elsewhere? Not really sure here. Perhaps there is a price riser you can latch onto? Good team without any real issues.

Right, you've got some good options from the pose replies. If you can create some cash with an FT, you'll have even more options down the line. You've got an unusual advantage of being able to make a chess move here.

Heck with it; holding Firmino and saving the FT. Rather have 2 FT next week when we'll have more data on Everton mids, Lukaku, Benteke, Sterling, etc.

I ws rash with early transfers to avoid early drops last year and it hurt my rank. Will now try the opposite approach. 🙂

Your squad should always be Kun + 14. At the minute its Kun & Ibra + 13. Ibra may drop from essential but for me when Kun is fit he has to be in your team or you're fooling yourself.

1-2 goals per game and that is without the 4 or 5 goal bonanza he eventually gets. A fit and in form Aguero is a must-have.

This is the 'essential' argument that pops up every three weeks are so.

The answer is 'of course', but the real answer is 'no'. It is obviously possible you hit on a better combination but why try, why risk it? Aguero will score if he's not injured, and so many others have him that you risk falling behind.

Having Ibra and Aguero isn't necessary but you should just do it.

Well. That was just the unanimous response I needed to warrant the -4 hit to bring him and capoe in. Unless WC which I'm very hesitant to do.

Who would you drop from this squad to accommodate?

      Jaku Valdez
      Fuchs Terry Walker McCauley Valencia
      Mahrez Oscar Tadic Lamela Fernandinho
      Long IBRA Vardy

I'm keen on keeping long for the Sunderland match and then keep an eye on negredo some his upcoming fixtures are iffy

Tough really. Vardy is the one to drop for Ibra, but I'm not sure how to do it.

I guess Fernandinho > Capoue looks a good move.
Also Fuchs > Friend, maybe. You've spent a lot in defence.

I'd be tempted to WC myself to get that rebalanced. My biggest issue with your squad is you have 4 relatively premium defenders. Too much!

Yeah I'd agree with this. Though I'd also say that having two 6.0m midfielders is too many. I'd try to spread it out more like 10, 8.5, 7.5, 6.0, 4.5

Not a fan of that formation but it can work.

I think this Redmond train will derail by the time Stoke's fixtures turn so I'll likely consider Bojan then

Yeah, it's an atypical formation for me. I'm just not feeling terribly inspired by the 6.5 forwards right now. Outside of Rondon, I don't like much. So come GW8, when Rondon's fixtures turn more difficult, and Bojan's get tasty, I'd rather have Bojan and Diomande plus about 0.5 than Rondon and Capoue.

Of course, it'll all go up in smoke by the time we get there, but it's fun to plan 🙂

I've been burned too many times but with Ibra and Aguero I guess it seems a decent time for it.

Looked about the most creative thing on their team. If Defoe gets goals most of them will come through Janusaj. He could do very well at Sunderland, given enough pitch time. His end product needs more work but then again ive watched Navas for what the past 3 years ffs.

The Rag Rejects have a half decent one for once.

Right, I had 2 FT's so I did Firmino to Barkley, like a sheep and will still have 2 FT's next week unless I'm sorely mistaken. Left with this odd looking lot. Good enough for now?

    Cheers.

    Terry Stones Morgan
    Capoue Mahrez Barkley Oscar Walcott

Don't see Walcott starting and blanking if he does, plus then there's Vardy. I did Vardy and Firm to Barkley and Ibra two days ago because Ibra is just too good to resist compared to Vardy's scoring potential on recent form.

Oscar, Walcott and Vardy are the standout iffy areas. You're sticking on Vardy obvs, so maybe Oscar out?

      1. Stupendous
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

Im holding Vardy one last week yea. Hard to ditch him ahead of Swansea at home. If he can grab a goal, or better yet two or three then im golden. One thing I didn't mention (which perhaps I should include in my name actually), is that I have and will have NO UNITED players. Personal reasons aside, I am not allowed any in my City leagues through mates or Fb or the like and so on. I don't expect to challenge overall, or on here, so essentially im just playing to win my City leagues and maybe do half decent in my ML.

Oscar Theo and Vardy all iffy yes I agree. I did see odd looking lot above mate ha.

It's too early for mass changes or WC's. Ive made all those mistakes before.

Keeping two frees, and then Oscar, Theo and co, can all be chopped after one more week.

        Cheers

Pretty cool league idea then. Well in that case I'd definitely start considering Batshuayi, if you're keen on another punt. Yeah he's not a guaranteed starter just yet, but in 2 games off the bench he's gotten a goal and assist. Plus last night he scored a brace in the cup. He'll be pushing Costa for his place soon.

Lukaku or Kane are safer proven options too.

          Good luck.

    Morning dzzz,

First big decision for me (firmino >> barkley) and i am bottling it aargh

    Pros for doing the transfer:
    - Barkley will likely rise in price again by sunday
    - Firmino was lucky to avoid today but will drop in price on thursday therefore will be close to dropping on sunday unless he scores against spurs
    - if barkley scores on sat, the bandwagon will be in full swing
    - Hard to assess whether barkley will be consistent given lack of data and new manager tactics
    - is he on pens? That will be a big swing factor..he is on set pieces
    - other everton mids dont seem nailed on and lukaku pricey
    - everton's good fixtures
    - raises funds

    Cons:
    - Firmino often plays in a false 9
    - liverpool more attacking and when you watch games, they seem to create a lot more.
    - Yes firmino missed out on returns versus arsenal but 1 game is a small sample
    - liverpool tends to do well against spurs
    - who takes pens for liverpool? dont think its firmino
    - i have 1m itb so was initially thinking of doing firmino >> mahrez/ozil
    - my def also needs work so rather use my FT on that. not happy with valencia stones friend (pieters kone)...starting friend away from home is not ideal so wanna do kone >> souare

SIGH!! Thought writing it out would help me crystalise my thinking but still stuck..its so 50 50

Do it. Everyone else is 😉

Really though, I think the fixtures turn it. Everton's are fantastic, Liverpool's are not. Form is on Barkley's side, as is price, and he is a more integral part of the team than Firmino.

      Go for it!

Just do it. The fixtures and money saved make it worth it. And if Firmino starts firing when 'Pool's fixtures turn strong again, just reverse it and get him back in.

No need to waste a transfer on a 4.5 def when al your other defenders are starting and Friend away at West Brom is a great fixture anyway.

      • 10 Years

Liverpool often get greater attacking returns vs "better" teams and do well against spurs historically.
Firmino more consistent last season than Barkley and often plays false 9.
Firmino now looking like a differential compared with Barkley.

      I'm holding.

There's a 3.0M difference there. I think the expectations for their output is a little different, no? One is an enabler. The other you'd expect to outperform almost all other mids.

This. Although I wouldn't suggest buying Snodgrass.

The one thing about Snod would be that his involvement when goals are scored will likely be higher.

Again though, I'm staying clear of both.

I haven't looked for the tweets so I'm not sure how I feel.

Someone said before that he'd apologized in the past. If that is true it does seem silly to punish him now. However the 'we all make mistakes' thing only goes so far.

Would the FA punish someone if they found out they'd been in bar fights 4 years previous? Or if they'd been in prison in the far past? Serious questions. I don't know what the precedent is for suspending players for things they did before they were in the league.

        Valencia - Williams - PVA - Pieters - Amat
        Hazard - Coutinho - Tadic - Antonio - Bojan
        Aguero - Ibra - Diomande

        Cheers.

    Gray.

No goal in GW1, so sold him early for Carroll who had tasty home fixture in GW2.

Just to found out Carroll was injured and Gray got goal & assist, so confidently bought him back.

Just to found out again that he has been charged by FA and suspension looks likely.

It's not what I did. I just think it might happen to some FPL managers. 🙂

      B.

Boro are a stronger defence than Palace.
Cherries are a stronger attack than Baggies.
