Technical Area – The Rise of Ben Davies

It’s been quite a start to the season for Ben Davies. Currently leading all defenders in terms of points with 49 – a number which trails only Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku at any position – the Welshman’s form is inarguable.

In the six matches in which he has featured (Davies was rested for Spurs’ home encounter with Swansea in Gameweek 5), he has returned an average of 8.2 points per match (ppm) – more than a point clear of his closest rival (Antonio Valencia’s 6.7).

Last season, Davies performed admirably while deputising for the injured Danny Rose – racking up a goal and three assists, in addition to his share of Spurs’ league-leading clean sheet total. However, his attacking returns this campaign (two goals, three assists) have already exceeded last season’s totals in just 30% of the minutes.

In order to better interpret this attacking leap, we’ll be breaking down Davies’ early-season heroics, and looking for players who might serve as good benchmarks for projecting the Welshman’s performance over the remainder of the campaign.

Prove he' still got it after the injury. There's no guarantee he 's going to get you a lot of points just because you put him in your team.

    Foster, Elliot
    Kola, Davies, Cedric, Mee, Hune
    Eriksen, Silva, Ritchie, Brady, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

1 FT, 0 ITB. Think I will keep Firmino as still think he is underpriced and want Liv attacker as they love big games. Also he has already been rested.

What do you think of this team? Any obvious missing? Any suggestions?

Will there be a public apology from FFS for releasing bug-riddled 'expected goals' data on Friday night in the captain sensible article?

A lot of people decided to captain Lukaku over Kane off the back of xG data that clearly wasn't ready for public consumption.

    1. MTPockets
        7 years, 28 days ago

Yeah they issued one somewhere in last 5 articles. You just need to go through them to find it.

Maybe it should be a lesson for next time to not be so dependant on numbers but instead, use them to support your own thinking, assuming you're capable of that and you're not relying on the scouts to do your thinking for you.

I just captained Kane ... it was away to Huddersfield, a promoted team, at a time when he was of fire and loving away matches - and he loves scoring against promoted teams

It just never occurred to me to check whether someone else thought he might or might not score

good strikers tend to score over their xG because they are good strikers. xG is pretty compelling in telling you Kane is a good goalscorer

What is the matter with you?

This was originally a niche site that kind of went mainstream. Membership only costs £1 per month and because a lot of what used to be unique to this site is now more widely available, Mark is working hard to provide some new angles. You can't see that? You can't respect that?

He deserves to be commended for his efforts rather than having idiots complaining that they don't like the shape of the spoon they are being fed with. "Here's the captain... open wide... and swallow!".

        Bah, humbug.

xG data is inaccurate because every system calculates it differently. Seriously, look up a few and you will see that there are big differences in the numbers they produce. If you aren't checking two or three (or don't realise that it's not a clear cut stat) then you aren't doing sufficient research. Or you are expecting FFS to do all that for you. Which brings us back to the spoon I'm afraid.

Are we sure this isnt, the Captain Sensible article was released without members restriction. It was quickly taken back down before being republished with the members restriction properly in place.

Not quite sure how that qualifies as "wasnt ready", but nevermind.

Yes. Exactly. You don't need stats to tell us that Kane will regress and won't score two goals in every away game.

The data used in the article was Opta's official xG data distributed to countless media sources.

Why do you state it wasn't "ready for public consumption"?

Can I have an apology for that false accusation because we'd never present the data if that was the case. The data wasn't broken or false in any way whatsoever.

It was fact that the Huddersfield defence looked far stronger statistically than Palace's and in fact, United had six big chances to Spurs' two. Lukaku had two to Kane's one.

Statistics can't legislate for Lukaku rolling the ball past the post with just the keeper to beat or Kane striking one in from 25 yards after beating two defenders. Both of which occurred.

Indeed. I though United would probably score 4+ and they did. Lukaku only getting one goal and no assists out of 4 scored is lower than his usual goal involvement. That can happen in any single game.

Huddersfield are still one of the better defences by most measures. They had a bad day. That can happen in any single game as well.

I'm happy to have captained Lukaku because it was a considered decision. I don't have 20/20 hindsight when selecting captains and nor does anyone else. And xG won't give it to you, either. 😉

Disagree on Huddersfield's defence. Over-acheived with the straight clean-sheets at the start of the campaign

Many tactical reasons to explain this, eg high-line, attacking full-backs often leaving two at the back etc

Yeah, I know all that. But their numbers for things like chances conceded and xGA are still among the top half of all defences, even after the mauling by Spurs. That was my only point. I'm not trying to recommend them to anyone.

Sounds like seriously sour grapes bud. All stats pointed to Kaku. It didn't work, some took a different approach and sometimes it pays off and more than often it doesn't. To blame the site for what you perceive to be false stats is a bunch of BS. Take it on the chin and move on.

Never base your decision entirely on stats mate. Stats are numbers that don't always tell a story. This could have gone either way. You can't really blame the article as it's there to give information not make the choice for you .

Then what's the point of playing FPL if you were just going to rely on the help of the community without using your own judgement? Does that mean next year there should be a type of ffs membership where ffs can fully control your FPL account so that you don't have to do all the plannings/decisions while doing nothing and wait for your score at the end of the gameweek? Just move on mate!

I have just done it to free up some cash and as Doosra's Deadly Marauder table shows, the last two weeks have shown Coutinho to be high up for goal attempts and assists.

Jones, can't pass up on cover into the United defence for 5.2m, I have him at 5 and am getting a 3rd cheap defender to rotate with him over the tough fixtures, he'll be my fifth def. Don't trust Southampton's defence either

How many of these Ds would you play in the next round:

Fonte (bur), Ward (BUR), Bavies (BOU), Otamendi (STK) and Cedric (NEW)

        Rest of team:

Richi, TC, Coutinho, Eriksen and Fellaini

        Jesus, Kane and Vardy

        Thinking 433 or even 523. 😕

Thanks for that. Not sure I'd bench Richi with his current goal threat - albeit in away games for some reason - but I agree with you.

Looking at the last 4 weeks, Fonte has only had one less goal attempt than Bavies and is well up the BPS ladder too.

Play him, then - I doubt that we will score. Although we are still better away.

Yes this is the crux. BUR/WHM could be anything. Tempted to play Fonte and Ward in a 5 man D.

The injury reports are all over the place..2 weeks, 6 weeks and 6 games minimum. Even if he is out, Bats isn't even nailed because Pedro can play the lone striker with Hazza and Willian in behind. I'll wait for now..

        Dilemma...

        A) Get Jesus (ft)?
        B) Keep Vardy?

It's just like our sound for "w". As in "walk". 🙂

The name of the letter itself is like saying "L" but if you didn't have a tongue lol.

Phil Jones is perma-injured so a two week break is very good news for owners.

          Atsu no idea.

No to Batshuayi. I also don't like Gross or Ritchie but many on here would vouch for them.

          You on WC?

I'd consider Coutinho over Salah now looking at his last two week's of stats. You save some cash and have more chance of goals and asissts with him.

Batshite is a real risk and not one I'd be prepared to take esp if AC starts Hazard in a forward role.

Time to boot Lukaku imo with the change of fixtures. Replace with Jesus.
