A little later in the week than usual, it’s time to review the armband candidates for the weekend and launch our latest Captain Poll.

The reason for the delay was an attempt to glean more information on Harry Kane’s (12.6) recovery from a hamstring injury, sustained against Liverpool in Gameweek 9.

Owned by 28%, Spurs striker returned to training on Tuesday and starts tonight’s Champions League tie with Real Madrid. That means that he will surely be available for this weekend’s home clash with Crystal Palace, giving us the confidence to include him in our review and poll.

With a brace, an assist and maximum bonus in his last home run-out in the league – the 4-1 demolition of Jurgen Klopp’s side – Kane has emerged as the early poll favourite.

In addition, his opponent Palace have shipped a combined nine goals away to the two Manchester clubs under Roy Hodgson and have allowed 34 shots on target on the road – no side has conceded more.

Should doubts linger over Kane’s minutes or even his prospects at Wembley, alternatives include team-mate Christian Eriksen (9.7), who has claimed two assists and three goals already this season.

However, his recent deeper role over the last two Gameweeks does, perhaps, cast some doubt on his potential. In which case Dele Alli (9.3) – with three goals and an assist – could also be a consideration.

Looking at the Gameweek fixtures, Spurs assets certainly look the most enticing options, with many rival big-hitters facing testing and hard-to-call encounters.

Manchester United’s visit to Chelsea is likely to limit the confidence in striker Romelu Lukaku (11.7), who sits in 52% of squads.

During the Red Devils’ clashes with top-four rivals, manager Jose Mourinho has adopted a more defensive stance, drawing 0-0 away to Liverpool and scraping a 1-0 against Spurs last weekend. A similarly conservative approach is expected at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian has delivered attacking returns in eight out of 10 league matches, however, he last earned a double-digit haul back in Gameweek 5. No goals in Lukaku’s last six outings in all competitions is also a factor that will doubtless deter backers.

The prospect of Mourinho adopting such ‘bus parking’ tactics also limits confidence in Chelsea’s attack, with Eden Hazard (10.6) and Alvaro Morata (10.3) the most likely candidates.

However, with a goal and seven chances created against Bournemouth in Gameweek 10, Hazard’s form may well find a way around Mourinho’s tactics – and perhaps Ander Herrera’s man-making – on this occasion.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s trip to Manchester City makes Alexis Sanchez (11.8) and Alexandre Lacazette (10.4) major risks for the captaincy.

At home, Pep Guardiola’s defence have handed opponents just six shots on target. Meanwhile, the Gunners have only found the net in two of their five road trips and have just one victory outside of the Emirates.

With 21 goals from five matches at the Etihad, City’s attacking assets have a far stronger case for challenging Kane at the summit, particularly as Arsene Wenger’s defence have already shipped nine goals on the road.

But with the threat of rotation looming large, it may well be that many will swerve the many options on offer.

Sergio Aguero (11.8) might just be the exception – depending on his minutes in tonight’s Champions League tie. He was captained by more than 770,000 managers in Gameweek 10, but remained on the bench at The Hawthorns.

However, the Argentine could be vying for City’s all-time scoring record on Sunday should he fail to score in Napoli tonight. He leads the line in Rome.

Meanwhile Leroy Sane surely has to be fancied as a midfield option – he has double-figure returns in his last four Gameweek outings at the Etihad Stadium. However, his start tonight is his ninth in the last ten matches and with Gabriel Jesus benched, Guardiola could yet spring another surprise with his selection for Sunday’s clash.

Considering that the highest scorer among Gameweek 10’s top five captaincy choices was Lukaku – with a mere five points – managers may even look to a differential.

Despite his missed penalty against Huddersfield, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (9.2) continues to look a solid option. The Egyptian still returned an assist against the Terriers and collides with a West Ham defence that has conceded six in their last three home matches.

Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy (8.6) is another candidate to tempt risk-takers after netting for the first time in four outings against Everton. The England striker travels to face Stoke at the bet365 stadium having scored in three of his last four encounters with Mark Hughes’ defence.

Having delivered attacking returns in each of his last three Gameweeks, Vardy’s team-mate Riyad Mahrez (8.4) could also garner interest.

For the Potters, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (5.7) could be a factor, with only Kane and Lukaku firing off more shots in front of their own fans than the Cameroon winger. Owned by 6%, he was back as Hughes’ central striker in the 1-0 win at Watford on Saturday.

Talking of the Hornets, Richarlison (6.4) was a major disappointment in that defeat to Stoke. Indeed, he’s failed to register a single shot on target at Vicarage Road this season. But on his travels, he has been devastating, making him a potentially lucrative captaincy option ahead of his visit to Goodison Park.

Richarlison boasts 22 attempts in away matches – only Kane can match that – and has already scored three goals and assisted a further two.

Everton’s defence have shipped ten goals in home matches, the second worst tally behind Watford themselves.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 11 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Elliot
    Otamendi - Jones - Kolasinac - Duffy
    D.Silva - Salah - Ramsey
    Lukaku - Jesus - Morata

    Foster - RLC - Tarroll - Hunmeier

All chips left. Thinking about WC over international.
BUT, how to fit Kane in here for the weekend?

    Just do Lukaku + Ramsey -> Kane(C) + Richarlison?

What to do with Ben Davies?

I'd think that Rose could use some gametime against Palace this weekend as he works his way back to match fitness + Bavies played the full 90 against Real last night. Not to mention that he faces competition from Aurier as well (as seen from the Liverpool game, to counter Salah's pace?)

No doubt a great fantasy asset *when he's playing*, great team defence at Spurs, fantastic attacking threat down the left and an OOP defender.

    Would you keep him?

Yup think Leicester should be confident and will atleast get a goal against Stoke although Stoke are strong at home and Shawcross back will help them defensively.

Carroll could get the odd assist but Brighton have been good defensively too.

He has more goals in him. Firmino listed as a mid was interesting. As a striker not so much. I've got vardy myself. I reckon he's a great pick. He's 3/4 of a lukaku points wise. With the extra 4 mil in midfield

Vardy, beacase he is the main man up top for the Foxes and the new system (if Puel persists) might play to his strengths more.
Firmino is not the main man up top Salah & Mane are ahead in the pecking order.

Vardy because he has involved in goals more compared to firmino but Liverpool do score more goals. Also firmino hasn't completed 90 once this season which can be frustrating to own seeing as lots of goals come late meanwhile vardy is guaranteed 90 mins. Firmino does get more bonus but overall I would rather vardy

      Vardy, 100%

I've owned both this season, and trust me, Firmino is far more frustrating to own.

Don't know if it's just me, but seeing a 3,4,5 goal game from pool to then open the stats and see firmino has blanked is far more infuriating than seeing Leicester not score in a game. Ends up the same points but firmino somehow gives you higher expectations due to pools massive goal threat.

Plus, salah is the way into pools attack. Vardy is probably the best Leicester option too. Wouldn't be too happy to double up in either

I had a crack last week. It was so perfect in paper. I'd done a stupid -8 for Aguero, coutinho and richarlison earlier in the week. In the end it got 4 points more than my -8 team with Aguero, coutinho, Kane on the bench. 20 points worse than if I had not made any transfers

Mine failed too but feel it was worth the risk. Last year if you had king and captained Lukaku in the big blank GW, you were pretty solid as most of the other rubbish available that GW did nothing. If it's the same this year, using the free hit may not "fail" in the BGW but its ceiling may not be all that high either.

Which 4.5 defender to get? Looking to replace Bellerin, so will have correct funds to upgrade 4.5 forward to Tammy. Already have Jones and Azpi.

    A) Lowton/Mee (Dyche leaving?)

    C) Simpson/Morgan (New Manager effect?)

A different season than last, with managers on here much more reserved?
-8 didn't work last week so I'll get back up on the horse...another -8 it is, FPL is supposed to be fun, right?sometimes? this week maybe?
There must be some hit crazy guys still left on here...last season was much more fun!

Go with your gut, not the herd. I’m starting to accept the fact I need some surgery over the coming weeks and think that the hits will be profitable over time.

Last season saw hits pay off due to the rapid price changes. If you didn't take a hit, come next gameweek you could be 0.5m worse off because of a single transfer.

This season is different. And in response to Tears for Fers, I wouldn't say I am part of a herd. I'm playing my own game and very rarely ask for advice on what transfers to make and just look at my own tables and fixture tickers and decide from there

      1. Oven Glover
        • 10 Years

Same here. Not asking for advice often. Just accepting that I f:ed up on my initial selection and early WC. Starting to get a grip of what to do now after a tricky start and it will cost me one or two hits over the coming weeks to make good on my mistakes.

        1. Pep says
          • 10 Years

All I will say is don't take hits for bench fodders to afford another player. Get a full playing squad or at least 12 outfield outfield starters and avoid too many rotation risks. Sané is my only rotation risk but in the next few weeks I'll have the choice or RLC or Calvert Lewin to cover him of he misses a game

          1. Oven Glover
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 4 months ago

That’s exactly what I’m doing. Not one for fodder but I didn’t see Suttner being dropped/rotated with Bong for example... Have Kun, Sterling, Suttner and had Davies. Did Davies to Jones for the long run but it might cost me this week.

Ya I Clark on WC gw8. So annoyed when he got dropped, especially when I only fielded 10 players in gw8 and 9 and he would have earned me 8pts in those 2 fixtures.

      2. Jayv807

The prices rises have slowed heaps but drops seem to happen quickly (except for Kane/Lukaku for some reason) Last year I wouldn't care as much if a hit didn't work out as I probably got a 0.2m (0.1 SV) increase in the player. This year I've had barely any double risers and when they fail, they seem to plummet in price immediately which pushes me into early transfers and more hits.

Patience is more important than ever this year so far.

        1. Pep says
          • 10 Years

Dawson, Cedric, Bertrand, Daniels. They've all been threatening to drop for weeks now and only Dawson has.

Yeah, I pick my players from watching the games and follwing the fixtures. I only ask on here as it's interesting to get opinions from the more stats driven managers (some I feel rarely even watch a game!).
Last season I finished top 5k taking hits galore, I realise this won't work out this season. I'm kind of happy with my team for the medium term so hits might cease for me now for a while at least 😉

Ya i agree, watching games is key. Although living in China, I usually only get to watch the 12.30 and 3pm game and I have to watch MOTD for the rest. I'm aware of stats but I don't drool over them

I also live in China.I usually watch the three Sat games & Sun games on cricfree.
The hour change is annoying now as the 5.30pm Sat eve game is on so late now and the Sunday 4pm games also.

Expect there to be heavy rotation amongst Spurs full backs now there are 4 fit to choose from. Rose and Aurier likely to start v Palace. Had Davies since the start but this is the week he'll be shipped for me.

Davies will probably start against Palace as I see no reason for him to be rested ahead of an Int. Break so you're safe for now. And Arsenal's next 4-5 fixtures don't look great so selling Kola is a good move.
