Paul Pogba revives his Fantasy stock, though Jesse Lingard’s rapid ascent as a cut-price midfield option dominates proceedings as Manchester United ease through the gears to see off Everton.

Lingard’s sublime second strike for the visitors at Goodison means he now has seven goals and two assists from the last nine Gameweeks.

The reaction from Fantasy Premier League managers has been instant. Lingard is the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 23, with 42,000+ making the move. That has seen his price rise to 6.2 overnight, with a further rise looking likely prior to the next deadline.

Lingard had already proved a popular figure even before his effort on Merseyside.

He was signed by 94,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline and was second only to Roberto Firmino for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 21, claiming over 303,000 new owners.

It’s difficult to question the move for Lingard at present. Although shifted from a No 10 position to a role on the left at Goodison Park, he still managed to float into central areas and was only denied a second goal by a superb Jordan Pickford save.

Indeed, since cementing a run of starts from Gameweek 14 onwards, his total of 13 shots on target is matched only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders. He easily tops the United ranks for shots over that period and is also second only to Juan Mata for chances created.

That combined threat and creativity, coupled with a modest price tag, creates a very strong case for inclusion in our midfields at this time, even with competition so fierce.

And yet Pogba also used Monday’s match to highlight that he cannot be totally overlooked.

Restricted to just one penalty area touch in his three appearances since returning from suspension in Gameweek 19, Pogba was given more freedom to join the attack against Everton.

The inclusion of Ander Herrera in the starting line-up allowed Pogba to influence matters in attack and he had eight touches in the box, including two of his four shots on goal.

Pogba ended the match with two assists and a maximum bonus return to deliver a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12. However, he is still without a goal in seven starts.

The Frenchman was sold by 73,000+ ahead of Monday’s match, losing 69,000+ in net ownership over the last two Gameweeks.

The emergence of Lingard will do little to reverse that trend, though with an Old Trafford meeting with Stoke City up next, there is surely an incentive for his remaining 633,000+ manages to sit tight.

Trips to Burnley and Spurs then follow – both altogether more testing fixtures for United’s attack.

United Defence Back on Track

A run of just one clean sheet in seven was halted by the goalless draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21. With another clean sheet achieved at Everton, confidence in Jose Mourinho’s backline is being restored.

David De Gea continues to stretch out in front in the overall goalkeeper standings on 114 points, edging ahead of Burnley’s Nick Pope for points per match (5.2 vs 4.9).

Phil Jones – at 5.6 to De Gea’s 5.9 – is the alternative cover in the United defence.

Surprisingly, the centre-back started again for a sixth successive Gameweek, destroying the theory that he may struggle to chain appearances together over this festive period.

That should reassure us on his prospects from this point on, with a clean sheet against the Potters in Gameweek 24 on the cards.

Jones is currently the most signed defender ahead of Gameweek 24.

However, Mourinho’s new outlook on Luke Shaw also has to be considered. The left-back has now started and completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Priced at just 4.9, if Shaw can show that he has cemented a starting role, there is no question that he is another asset to consider.

Concerns Mount for Calvert-Lewin

While United’s assets enjoyed a revival in Monday’s meeting, confidence in Everton as a source of Fantasy talent took a blow.

Wayne Rooney‘s recall to the starting XI failed to produce returns for a player now part of 922,000+ FPL squads. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a rest with Oumar Niasse leading the Toffees attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s potential as a cut-price third or even second striker will come under scrutiny from this point. He has produced just a single goal in six Gameweeks and, with Sam Allardyce confirming a bid for Cenk Tosun, it’s clear that his role and minutes could soon be reduced.

Everton failed to register a shot on target against United, with Allardyce making it clear that the club is moving to address matters in attack.

“We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We’re trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals.”

In defence, Jonjoe Kenny was also handed a rest after struggling in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21. It remains to be seen if he is handed a recall over Mason Holgate at right-back for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, with a visit to Spurs to follow in Gameweek 23.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

No its not nonsense. It would make perfect sense for him to stay and fight for a club he still has respect for. They could do something special in the CL and he would be cup tied for Barca. Get the move finalised now but move in the summer. All the time to get ready for WC and have remainder of pre-season with his new club

Captaincy options for gw23 are so slim

    Salah has man city
    Sterling has Liverpool (away)
Morata has Leicester (this looks okayish)
Kane has Everton ( maybe the masses will cap him )

I am considering Jones as an option .

mostly agree though it's a 'potential' four points depending on whether you even need to take a hit in the future.

If you're carrying over transfers and a transfer is going to get wasted then clearly it isn't worth four. But an additional banked transfer is worth four

people rarely seem to understand this and factor it into calcs

        2. Sims
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

u can use the transfer elsewhere, making it a hit.

at the end of the the day it costs you 2 transfers, whichever way you want to look at it, and worth 8 points

          1. Pacer.
            • 11 Years
            8 years, 1 month ago

two free transfers does not = - 8 points

            they potentially MAY = - 8 points

free transfers cannot be assigned a value as simply as hits, though I agree they have a potential value that people fail to account for properly

not necessarily. there is a potential cost. if those transfers are not required, or if one transfer is to be lost through two transfers carrying over then the value of those transfers is closer to zero

however, there are always that can be made to a team or a bench which can improve points and be attributed to a FT as its value. also, anytime a hit is taken because a manager only has one banked transfer then a used FT takes on the hit value of -4

This really depends where you are in your ML. I am chasing and everybody has Salah, however I knew very few would take him out, so I did my swap for Ali ( already have Kane and Son ). Its a no brainer as Salah will not play and Spurs next 4 fixture (inc DGW) are better than Liverpool. Will transfer Salah back for either Alli or Son but both have gone up in value and Salah will no doubt drop due TF out. Its points I need not £'s.

Still an option despite poor fixtures, Coleman won't be back for another month or two at least. Im fairly certain big same prefers Kenny , Kenny has played every minute that big sam was in charge until last night, thats probably why he was benched as he was due a rest

I'm on a WC for the next GW. Thoughts?

    Ryan
    Ota Azpi Jones Alonso
    Sterling Salah Arnie Lingard Mahrez
    Kane

    Pickford Ayew Dunk Quaner

I know it's officially "too early" for the WC but I have had an utter 'mare of a season so it's sh*t or bust for me from now on.

I don't think you need that many expensive defenders. Jones is good value, so maybe lose one of azpi/alonso/ota and maybe also downgrade arnautovic then you could get a decent 2nd striker.

I think the Azpi and Alonso is too limiting for your bench.
Prefer Azpi > Bur player and put cash into Dunk/Ayew.

    REPOST
everyone is talking about a lack of rotation threat with jesus injured which is fair but city have a game every three days for atleast the next month and aguero will not be able to play all these games and with jesus out it means sterling will most likely start as a striker in some of those games unless they sign someone very soon, im not sure who else could play up top but aguero will not be able to play that many games and we could only say he could miss the FA cup game this weekend but there is 2 legs of a league cup semi final to play as well before champions league re starts next month.
If aguero does play all league games then sterling might be starting the cup games as striker which would be disastrous or is there another option to play up top ?

Knowing Pep Delph will be starting up top soon. Wouldn't be surprised to see Pep move someone to a false nine for the league cup games , Bernardo Silva is crying out for game time like, De Bruyne could definitely do a shift there. I think Pep's Wet Dream would be to just play 11 midfielders anyway

I sold Salah because he looked like he wasn't going to start, wanted to bring in a player who could play twice, and I was a bit late to the party so didn't lose out on too much value.

This - I actually removed Salah, Couts and Firm in a -12. These guys would have given me one point. I also have injuries and suspensions on my bench so coverage was a problem too.

Traded for 2 x DGW guys and Kun (now essential imo).

Once Salah is fit he will be brought back of course...

    Pope/Adrián
    Ota Christensen Jones Ogbonna Kenny
    Hazard Sterling Eriksen Son Richa
    Kane Depoirte DCL

    Thinking of 7+ transfers.
Ogbonna, Haz, Erik, Son, Richa, Depoirte, DCL ➡ Zanka, Salah, Mahrez, Lingard, RLC, Firmino, Qanar.

So true. Especially on WC you can puzzle for hours. I WC-ed before this GW and wanted Kün and Ota in. Looking for new budget players to gain funds and deciding who to drop is fun. At least until your WC team is beaten by your old team. I found Kelly (Palace) and Dummett (New), now hoping they get some gametime.

This is very similar to my team this GW except i have Morata and Arnautovic, Salah and RLC instead of Haz Son Richa and Deportee. I personally swapped Morata Arnie and and Eriksen to Mahrez, Lingard and Aguero last night to catch the price rises. Thinking of dumping DCL after next gameweek but have to decide who to replace him with first.

I think its because of the way i play the game, i tend to give players a week or two more than i should to prove their worth and sometimes that means i end up with 3 or 4 players that i don't really want anymore. For example two gameweeks ago i had two free transfers but used neither as i wanted to give Hazard, Morata and Richardson one more game each to sort themselves out. Needless to say Hazard was ditched, and i just swapped richarlison for Arnautovic for the DGW but now Lingard seems too good an option to refuse

At 9/1 no value at all. Look at the number of hat-tricks scored in relation to the number of games played. No serious punter would touch this with a barge pole but good luck to anyone who tries.

What difference in points would you deem a free hit a success?

15 I'd say.. somewhere around the number of points spare players would get in a blank

judging the free hit chip is more than just point ga in that particualr week

u have to consider the players coming back being good for future gameweeks or if they were just poor options and you were better off just selling them in first place

the latter will result in fh chip point gap being bigger but alos bad for future gws. another reason why using it in blank gw has a major upside

Yeah I agree.. I sold salah coutinho firmino to get spurs mids and aguero but wanted all 3 back (maybe not coutinho) but that's multiple hits so surely you have to take that into account as well

It was pretty blank this week, especially if you had the Firmino, Salah & Coutinho trio

Hoping for good points from the FH and also had the advantage of a hit free week
This week I get the bonus of lots of other people taking hits and I also save on my usual -8 to -16

yeah i agree firmino coutinho salah provided a good oppurtunity for fh chip becuase theyre good future options. seen some people with players like jesus and lacazette use the chip which puzzled me

For example if you had many flags and would take hits to remove them and hits to bring back then you're already up before a ball is kicked in theory?

Well I have not got Kane so buying him and salah back would be major surgery where as now I can get Kane in for a -4

Yeah, I think the Jesus injury nails him on, but makes him a lot more important to City so they will need to protect him at all costs.

Of course if Alexis joins soon that goes out the window again.
