The recent departure of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool has deprived both Jurgen Klopp and Fantasy managers of a top class midfield talent.

Prior to his transfer to Barcelona, the Brazilian had been in sparkling form, supplying seven goals and six assists in just 1,100 minutes of top-flight action. Yet with the Merseysiders now facing the prospect of enduring the latter half of 2017/18 without the playmaker, how are our evaluations of their other key attacking assets impacted?

This week’s Technical Area will examine how Liverpool’s key options have fared with and without the Brazilian, in an attempt to inform our expectations of their performances and value moving forward.

    Morata is massively due.

Leicester (h) is a great fixture for him.

Leicester weak at set pieces and could be without Morgan and no Simpson.

Alonso/Hazard/Morata - who to captain? That’s the question

I'm on Morata (c) atm but I won't go through with it unless he scores tonight against Arsenal. Think he needs a goal to get some confidence back.

Which one is the best way to fit Lingard into my team:

    A) Arnie > Lingard for free
    B) Son > Lingard for free
    C) RLC + DCL + Maguire > Lingard + Quaner + 4.1 DEF
    D) Forget about Lingard and make Maguire> Jones for free
    E) Save

I agree. I'm leaning towards A or C over B. May as well save if I'm not spending the money from the downgrade, and I'm not as sure as others that Lingard will outscore Alli. If in doubt, do nothing

I agree with you there, that hit could be justified as you are downgrading Allli to bring in Alonso who has been a machine for gameweeks now. Save for one more week would be fine though as Lingard has two tough fixtures. 2 FTs next week to bring in Alonso.

Depends on what I would use the money for. I'm happy with Azpi and fell like Azpi > Alonso is a bit of a waste of a transfer, even though Alonso is a bit better in FPL terms. Whereas Daniels > Alonso is a real upgrade. If I did Azpi > Alonso next week, why not this week? Seems sensible to try and use my 2FTs (and a hit?) for a more wholesome team improvement which might include the Spurs mids and/or Rashford and/or DCL

Yup. Honestly think it's not the worst week to punt for captaincy haha. Have 2 Spurs and think that's plenty enough. I'll be happy if Kane hauls. Don't really want to captain him this week. Morata would be good differential captain but I can't trust him even if he scores couple tn. City game is a huge question mark for me, no idea what to expect.

Worth also mentioning that Firmino averages 5.71 pts per match in games when Coutinho was absent and 4.92 when Coutinho was playing.

In fact Firmino's strong early form this season, without Coutinho, pretty much ended when his Brazilian team mate returned...his next attacking return was not until Gameweek 10 - when coincidentally Coutinho was once again absent.

In terms of Fantasy points Firmino prospers in Coutinho's absence it seems.

Its tough to see with Firmino where it will go in terms of Fantasy points. There are lots of other factors at work, such as opposition, other players, home or away...but so far it looks like Firmino has produced in both Coutinho's absence and with him.

All being well he can continue with Lallana taking over some of Coutinho's role.

I agree, they will still be an exciting force with Mane/Firm/Salah leading the line and now with VVD, who can pick out long passes from the back, I'm intrigued to see how the new dynamic evolves.

I'm looking forward to watching that game to see how Liverpool perform! Having no attacking assets from either team will take the stress away also, a tight affair and one nil to City with a late Otamendi winner would be just lovely jubbly though 😉

Toughest game of the season to predict. Best home defence and attack against best away defence and attack. Could be 0-0 or 10 -10. Something has to give surely.

Like you discussed in ScoutCast last night it remains to be seen what happens to his output after his good friend left the team. There could be a drop in his performance short term but think he'll do just fine without.

Do you think VVD might affect Liverpool's attacking stats?

As in will they be more inclined to bomb forward in attack with the big Dutch man behind them or will they be now be more willing to pass the ball around the back with more confidence?

Good point. Another thing to watch out for....although suspect we may not learn much in a tight City game. Swansea should give us a strong indication of how they may perform in a normal match against a bog standard side.

Which shows that there are multi ways of reading various statistics and we usually choose the one that suits our hearts best, when making a decision...

Or, perhaps, it will all depend on what kind of a team Klopp creates w/o Coutinho. Ultimately, playing without Coutinho for a few games but having him in the squad forces short-term strategies, whereas in the irreversible and forever absence of Coutinho, Klopp is forced to recreate a system.

I think he's an unselfish player by nature who is always gonna look for the pass before taking a shot himself, and tbf Salah and Mane are the real fwds in this team especially when Coutinho didn't play earlier this season e.g when they ripped West Ham apart. Firmino will always be involved but to expect him to keep delivering like a traditional #9 might be asking too much. Salah+Mane double up is lookin tasty from gw24...

To all of us who still have the 3 chips:

Free hits is for around February March where there should be a GW with only 4-5 matches like last year? (Read something about GW 31)

Bench Boost obviously around the end of the season where there is always a big DGW?

Triple Captain is more interesting though... I would have put it on Kane for GW 22 because he had the form and the fixtures... good I didnt...

If we are playig Bench Boost around the end season, will we have other chances for Triple Captain?

i will tc for one of the double gw and bench boost the other. the problem with bench boost is that you have to spread the cost of your team so that every one in your squad plays, thats annoying.

This is why you use the WC around Bench Boost. They say the week before but last season when Ibra got injured I used the WC 2-3 GWs before Bench Boost but with planning andno injuries everythig ended well 🙂

i used my tc for the last dgw and got 180 points so doubt i ll get the same outcome but might carry on the same tactic, but thats just me 🙂

I imagine pretty much anyone you triple captain on any given GW from now till the end of the season will outscore what Kane did in DGW22.

Mason Holgate - 1. might face ban for homophobic tweets. 2. might face ban for pushing Firmino for no reason, and potentially risking serious injury. 3. might face ban for lying about racist slur (if the lip-reading reports are correct).

Throw him out of the league!

    1. Cant comment on 1), but 2) The ref saw the incident so no further action, and 3) not sure how you would prove he didn't innocently mis-hear even if Firmino didn't call him what he thought he did.

This year FA can suspend players after games, even if refs see the situation, if there is no particular reason to overlook. Look at Niasse, and Lanzini.

He could have misheard. However, he still made extreme allegations to the ref to influence his response. If he was not sure, why would he do that?

Also, did you see the situation in question? He pushed Firmino for no reason, and could have injured him. He then stood waiting, looking like a ten-year old when they try to act gangsta. "You want'a piece'a me?" kind of look, and nodding his head in the same manner. "Come get me!" was what I read from his actions.

Childish, juvenile, and needs some behavioral training next to his suspension.

Niasse and Lanzini were banned for dives which were given as penalties. Not even remotely similar.

Ban the Ref.for being a plonker in not booking the cheap shot in reference to 2.

      1. Agree with this, though with the standard of refs at the moment there will be none left if they were banned for poor performances!

I actually empathise with them mostly and understand the tough nature of the job but there are a few howlers that really get my goat and that was one of them.

He could of not only injured Firm badly but also one of the spectators, total cheap shot and he had a clear view.

I would hope they wouldn't ban him for tweets sent when he was only 15. A bit of education required perhaps, but not a ban.

    Expected Blanks (xB):
    GW28: 1.5
    GW31: 4.8
    GW35: 3

31 looks a prime FH territory.

I was talking to the other Scoutcasters before broadcast about that.

A savvy manager could use a wildcard before the expected DGWK before GWK 35 to set the team up for the season run in - which also includes another DGWK in 37.

By using the FH chip in GWK 35 you don't have to worry about it, just ignore it completely from your planning and let the Free Hit chip take the strain.

Having said that this strategy takes a lot of planning and it may just be easier to play FH in GWK 31 and just tackle GWK 35 blanks with transfers or a hit or two.

This article doesn't take into consideration how poor Lallana is compared to Coutinho. He slows down a load of attacks, isn't very creative etc. Hoping it's Ox who gets the nod, where the creativity would be reliant from wider areas with Salah going more central.

Lallana can in no way compensate for the absence of Coutinho. I noticed Firmino dropping deeper against Everton, and assuming more playmaking responsibilities, too. Lallana does not have the vision, technical skill or shot of Coutinho, and is not as good a passer. Coutinho's shot (not withstanding some of his errant field goal attempts) keeps the defenders honest, and that makes his passing better (hoops analogy). Liverpool need another playmaker to solidify a top 4 finish, and Lallana isn't it. They could still do it, but it will be tougher without Coutinho.

Also comparing Cout out and effect on he pitch is ok but surely seeing your best player leave has a effect on the moral of the players? Shows your club/ owners ambitions

Got the money to replace a 4.3m defender with Christensen, without a hit.

Would you consider Alonso and Lingard instead of Hazard and the 4.3m defender for a -4 hit?

My instinct is to stick with Hazard (Salah, Sterling, Arnie, RLC the other midfielders) but feel I need Lingard/Alonso.

How would you get Alonso in? Getting Eriksen out before he plays Everton & Southampton doesn't seem like a great idea. I've £1.1 ITB

    Pope - Elliot
    Mee - Jones - Kenny - Dunk - Otamendi
    Eriksen - Sterling - Arnautovic - Salah - RLC
Kane - Morata - Calvert lewin.
