Just over a fifth of Fantasy managers will be happy to see Mohamed Salah (£8.5m) named on the bench for Egypt v Uruguay today.

That’s because 21 percent of those playing McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy own defender Diego Godin (£5.5m) ahead of the 1pm kick-off.

The Uruguay captain, the most owned player in this fixture, found the net four times in qualifying and recorded seven clean sheets. Oscar Tabarez’s men have also managed shut-outs in four of the five friendlies played since booking a place in Russia.

Without Salah in their side, Egypt went goalless in both of their World Cup warm-up matches and have managed just two in their last five friendlies.

So while Godin has soaked up most of the attention for Uruguay’s defence, six percent have goalkeeper Fernando Muslera (£5.5m) in their squad, three percent went with centre-back Jose Gimenez (£5.5m) and three percent like the look of right-back Guillermo Varela’s £4.5m budget price.

12 percent of McDonald’s players will be hoping to see Salah impress from the bench. Despite missing Egypt’s recent warm-up games through injury, the Egyptian is still more popular than both of Uruguay’s premium forwards Luis Suarez (£10.5m) and Edinson Cavani (£9.5m), largely, we expect, due to his cheaper price.

Suarez and Cavani look good value even at higher prices, though. The pair combined for 29 goal involvements in Uruguay’s international matches since October 2015. Suarez found the net seven times and provided assists on nine occasions, while Cavani combined 12 goals with two assists.

They seem the most likely to break the deadlock in Yekatringburg today, although 12 percent still invested in Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi (£4.5m).

STARTING LINE-UPS

EGYPT 4-2-3-1: El-Shenawy; Abdel Shafy, Hegazy, Gabr, Fathy; Hamed, Elneny; Trezeguet, El-Said, Warda, Mohsen.

URUGUAY 4-4-2: Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Varela; De Arrascaeta, Vecino, Bentancur, Nandez; Cavani, Suarez.

I am very surprised this game was not a sellout.

I know very well following your country to a major tournament is not cheap and is a major sacrifice for lots of fans but i still thought there would be enough fanatics in both country's to fill this stadium up.

It's the most remote of all the venues, must be a nightmare to get to right in the heartland of Russia.

You're also talking about a country on the other side of the world with a population of just 3.5 million against a third world country...

I would not consider Egypt a 3rd world country although there is a lot of poverty there is also a lot of money floating around the place.

You will see lots of country below Egypt and Uruguay on this list that will sell out a WC game.

2 and a half hour flight from Moscow which is already thousands upon thousands of miles away from both countries who aren't the wealthiest.

Games like these are where locals fill out the stadiums with excitement but as expect its not the case in a country that shouldn't be holding the tournament.

Hate to say it but Varela looks bad. Lazy and not pushing up the field to attack. It's what they have him for. Just saw Gimenez yell at him to get up the field.

Are you seriously asking why he got Cavani?

Because he's a great player for pretty good value? In a good team with a decent group.

It's always easy to look on after he hasn't scored and ask that question like you know better than him. Canavi can still score too.

      1. HamezMace
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

        I know, that's ridiculous.
I really think they need to look at how teams qualify for major tournaments.
There is no merit in teams like Spain, England, Germany etc playing San Marino, and Lithuania...no disrespect intended, but they don't even have professional footballers in those nations, when we argue about players being fatigued, and then they play non sense games like that.

        1. CloudSky
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

Thats easily corrected though. Teams can send second or even third strings if they are confident of beating them. Everyone needs to get a chance and I love some Cinderella stories like Iceland and the likes. But 48 just takes all the excitement out of it. Especially when the plus teams wont mainly go to Europe and SAmerica.

          1. HamezMace
            • 12 Years
            8 years, 1 month ago

I think that's how Joey Barton got an England cap.

It would make more sense to me to have tiers of qualifying, and the bigger nations don't get involved until the last stages.

I agree every nation deserves a chance, but I don't want to see on the biggest stage of football teams without professional footballs who panic and hit the ball out of play when someone gets within 5 yards of them, like I saw with Saudi Arabia yesterday.

Because they are still international footballers who can't make a simple 10 yard pass.
