The second of Sunday’s trilogy of World Cup matches is the Group F encounter between Germany and Mexico, which takes place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Kick-off is at 4pm.

The match will be of much greater interest to Fantasy managers than the lunchtime meeting between Serbia and Costa Rica, with Germany players in particular widely owned in the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game.

Die Mannschaft’s backline warrants special attention, with Joshua Kimmich (£6.5m) the most-bought German player: 26% of McDonald’s FIFA managers own the Bayern Munich full-back, who recorded an incredible nine assists in ten qualification appearances.

Manuel Neuer (£6.0m), who missed most of 2017/18 through injury, and Mats Hummels (£6.0m) are owned by 22% and 14% of Fantasy managers respectively, meanwhile.

Thomas Muller (£9.5m), who top-scored for Germany during qualifying and who scored five goals in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, is owned by 16% of Fantasy managers, perhaps a surprisingly low percentage given his tournament pedigree and midfielder classification.

No Mexico player is owned by more than 1% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA, which is not a huge shock given the tough nature of El Tri’s opening group match.

Juan Carlos Osorio’s side scored on more occasions and conceded fewer goals in qualification than Costa Rica and Panama, the other two CONCACAF nations who made it to Russia.

Goalscoring has been an issue in recent friendlies, though: Giovani dos Santos’ strike in the 1-0 win over Scotland was Mexico’s only goal in their last four internationals, which were all contested against European opposition.

No UEFA nation scored more goals in qualification than Germany (43), while only Spain and England let in fewer goals than Joachim Low’s side, who conceded four.

Set-pieces could be an area to watch today: Germany scored twice as many goals from direct corners (eight) as any other UEFA nation during qualifying. No European country had more goal attempts from set plays, either.

The 2014 World Cup winners haven’t been in such commanding form in 2018, however: the unconvincing 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia on 8 June was their first victory in four internationals contested this year.

The last four winners of the World Cup have kept 12 clean sheets in 16 knockout matches, conceding 4 goals.

2002 - Brazil only conceded a Michael Owen goal in the quarter finals.

2006 - Italy only conceded Zidane's penalty in the final.

2010 - Spain didn't concede after the group stages (which they also managed in Euro 2008 and 2012)

2014 - Germany conceded a 121st minute consolation against Algeria, at 2-0 up, and a 90th minute consolation against Brazil, at 7-0 up.

Can you see Germany doing the same with this set-up? They've now gone six games without keeping a clean sheet.

Kimmich has replaced Lahm since 2014, and Hector or Plattenhardt are full backs by trade, whereas the 2014 team saw Höwedes, normally a centre back, in that role.

Crucially, Kroos has moved from the number ten role to a deeper position, with Özil moving inside from the flank. It essentially means that Schweinsteiger has been replaced by Draxler in the team, and there's an obvious lack of defensive discipline in central midfield, for all their attacking quality.

Ole Ludo has strike rate on the green paint alright. Always a good read, though I often read the articles after the damage is done.

France only conceded once in four knockout matches in 1998, too, but I had to stop somewhere!

Defending standards are disimproving and with VAR, I expect lots of goals conceded at the business end.

They seem to be akin to their team of the early 2000s when even England turned them over. They had a generation of brilliant players, but unfortunately (for them) they seem to be in a bit of a lull now. Werner is never a striker that will win you a World Cup also, even if they had the strong defence. Louw to go and it all to be freshened up.

Be amusing if Germany go on a bad run for a few years so the truisms dry up. They don't look great on paper. Sane a loss IMO.
