The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

    Subasic,Olsen
    Meunier, Miranda, Trippier, Granqvist, Varela

So England crumble at the first signs of real opposition. They may make the semis given the kind draw but that would be as good as it gets.

The facts are that England didn't " crumble at the first signs of real opposition ". England B got beaten 1-0 by Belgium B - that is fact. So actually you are talking through your arris.

Quit winding us up. Russia may have home advantage, but I think England have a good chance against them in the semis. Then they just have to beat Mexico or Japan in the final.

Croatia vs. Denmark predictions? Croatia favourites obviously, but I quite fancy Eriksen since he's a great player and he'll almost certainly be involved if Denmark score. Still have WC to take him out after.

haven't been impressed by Denmark at all this WC to be honest. 2-0 Croatia

Thanks - yeah I'm also predicting a Croatia win, was wondering whether it's likely to be a 2-1 or 3-1 or something with some Eriksen involvement as a differential.

I wouldn't bet against Eriksen being involved, as you say if Denmark score he's likely to be in the points. Just cant see them having many chances against Croatia

      3-1 to Croatia

Eirksen is indeed a great player but he is all Denmark have and the Croats have the players to contain him.

Croatia are the best team i have seen so far in this World Cup and they will take some stopping.

Not sure if a wind-up but if not - Colombia played all but 5 minutes with 10 men and a 1-0 handicap after the early pen conceded.

Is defence blocking still decent tactic for knock outs? Thinking Uruguay and Spain to Brazil and Belgium in round of 16 but takes 5 transfers out of 20

            I think so.

The knockout games are likely to be low scoring and cagey affairs. Best to target clean sheets for your 5 points.

They are harder now though with drawing teams having to hold out 120 mins rather than 90. Think I will steer clear of teams in even cagey matches like Uruguay & go for ones I expect to breeze past the opposition like Spain & Croatia.

Sorry I was not clear. Planning to bring in Uruguay and Spain defenders pre deadline and after they play and hopefully get clean sheets will bring in Brazil and Belgium to try and capture clean sheets for them. Potentially 70 points (10 defenders x 7)

Oops, sorry - see what you mean now. It's a great idea, I do wonder if it'd be better to start with the Brazilian's and Belgian defenders though and leave as many transfers as possible for attackers

Used my bench boost already. Kept a Tunisian 3.9 goalkeeper, alongside Pickford. Decent strategy?

May end up swapping to the Japanese goalkeeper at 4.4 before the round starts, but don't want to be spending a lot two goalkeepers.

Keep the Tunisian one, I'm in the same boat. Don't see Japan keeping Belgium out and they'll also likely go out to Belgium, just wastes 0.5m that you could use elsewhere.

14 points behind top #100. Is it necessary to take a risk, or stay templatey? Considering going with both Hazard & Lukaku.

    Here's what i'm thinking

    Muslera / £3.9m non starter
    Pavard / Godin / Strinic / Granqvist, R Rod
    Coutinho / Modric / Quintero / Isco / Inui
    Neymar / Kane / Griezmann

The defence has too many issues and the lack of Belgians is worrying. Looks good otherwise.

What defence issues? 2 penalty takers other 4 are great shouts for clean sheets.
Hazard and Menier are the only tempting mids. Happy with the defence already and not sure Hazard is a better option than any forward there.

    What would you change here?

    Allison / 3.9 non playing
    RRodriguez / Granquist / Alba / Trippier / Sakai
    Isco / Modric / Coutinho / Quintero / Inui
    Neymar / DSilva / Hazard

0.6 ITB hard to find value in cheap midfielders. Maybe downgrade Quintero and upgrade Sakai?

When picking your defense, go through the stats game to game. For example Pique has had more shots on target than any other Spanish defender. It would be mad not to include him.

Ramos/Pique look like a good 1-2 for round of 16 considering Spain likely to go through.

Currently building around them and Isco.

R.Rod & Granqvist or just one?

Russia well capable of scoring at least once. Pique hasn't scored for Spain in more than 2 years and they conceded 5 in the group games, An expensive investment that could pay off but I wouldn't double up on Spain defence.

Strinic or Lovren. Doesn’t Strinic play as a wing back and Lovren center back?

There a reason not many picking France players?
Haven't looked at their best but only conceded 1 goal to a penalty in 3 games.

In case anyone has been wondering (this is based off of the last 2 world cups):

Round of 16: 7 cs in 16 games, 2.5 goals per a game

Quarterfinals: 6 cs in 8 games, 1.875 goals per a game

Semifinals: 3 cs in 4 games, 3.5 goals per a game but only 2 goals per a game not including 7-1

3rd Place Game: 1 cs in 2 games, 4 goals per a game

Finals: 2 cs in 2 games, 1 goal per a game

The winning teams kept 6 cs in 8 games and never allowed more than 1 goal and never went to pks

tl;dr: there are the most goals in the round of 16 and 3rd place game, least amount of goals in the final, not that many in quarterfinals and semifinals, winning team rarely allows a goal
