The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

    RMT take 2... 0.5 ITB

    Subasic Sommer
    Meunier Trippier Godin Granqvist Carvajal
    Coutinho Isco Modric Quintero Isco
    Griezmann Hazard Isco

Downgrade Sommer > Kawashima to upgrade Griezmann > Kane? Other thoughts?

Thanks! My thinking was that if I can’t have Kane I like Griezmann for 1st day captain and pens.

I like Hazard over Lukaku for pens and also is Lukaku still an injury concern? After captaining James yesterday I am super risk averse..

    Equal team vs Fodders

What is your strategy? Are you picking quite equal team or a bit better picks plus fodders?

For example are you going 2 x playing GKs or one playing + cheap fodder?
Are you picking players like Inui who has hard fixture but is cheap?

      equal team. want to supersize(c).

Same here. Think it gives me more chance to swap as for example Ronaldo vs Ira gave me 1p so I swaped him for Khazri. Also play BB so its obvious but even if I didnt I would give myselfe chance to swap blankers as dont think anyone bot full XI with returns that he didnt had to make changes.
I know I wont have 15 dtarters till the end but try to have as many as possible as long as possible.
Fodder GK strategy makes a risk that if your GK is out you will lose a FT. 2 playing GK is bigger chance to save that FT for other moves.

Can’t see any downside to Inui apart from him likely out 1st round.. There’s no other decent mid anywhere near his price so would spread funds too much for me.

I’m also going 1 GK with 3.9.. Again there’s just not many GKs at the 5.0 mark to make it worth it for me. See all of Croatia, Denmark, Switz, Japan, Russia out by the end of the quarters..

    3. Atimis

I plan to take Inui in so it will allow me to make other parts of my team stronger. I even plan to downgrade him more if I have FTs left before next rounds.
As I dont have WC, I plan to focus on my ability to field starting 11 till the final so cant risk too much with strong bench. Strategy is to most likely play 433 with strong 5 defenders in team as I see most value in them.
Now I have dilemma if go with 5.5/5.0GK or 6.0/5.5 with fodder to free up funds.

Fodders. I've always been about maximizing team value on the pitch when I play fantasy. I'll try my best to get bargains but I want to have as much invested on the field as possible.

Definitely 3.9m goalie and 4.4m Sanchez. The rest I'll try and make decent.

Bad strategy - might work for fpl, but surely you must have realised by now that having a decent 15 is the best approach... This shouldn't even be a debate

I am putting all my eggs into one Spanish omelette.

      2 playing GKs
Triple Spain defence, double someone else defence.
      2 big milfs, 3 x 4.5-5.5 milfs
      3 big forwards.

      A 5-2-3/4-3-3

I have 2 fodders. Overall my squad consist of:
      2 playing GK;
      5 playing Def (the cheapest is 5,1);
      3 Bigshot Mid (including 2 fodders);
      3 bigshot FW

Lose Costa. His underlying stats are really poor. He scored one goal out of nothing surrounded by 4 Portuguese players, a tap-in at a set piece and a fluke goal.

          “Only” 3 goals then

Kane “only” scored 2pens, 2 set pieces and a fluke. None were good goals so then they don’t count by that logic.

          What have France done?

Also the French could easily be out this round, Spain should make QF at least, probably the semis.

Trying to maximise the starting 11 and I anyways will not have enough transfer to deal with my bench once teams get eliminated.

I see it as potential peno vs potential assist, 1m is a lot anyway but also hard to predict if peno or assist is more likely to happen.

    RMT Draft #3

    Alisson Hassen
    Ramos Carvajal Miranda Akanji Dalsgaard
    Isco Eriksen Coutinho Quintero Sanchez
    Neymar Griezmann Lukaku

Making an off-kilter bet on Denmark to progress. I think Eriksen is a better fantasy prospect than Modric since he's so central to everything Denmark have going forward.

Could still do like Dalsgaard > Pavard if he's confirmed for the lineup.

    Captaincy - Griezmann > Isco > Neymar > Quintero

I want a balanced team and don't want to risk it on teams that i'm not sure will proceed to the 1/4 finals. Problem is that i will want players from those teams so i got 2 players from teams I believe will proceed - Brazil, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay. I also get a player from 6 teams that play against each other in 3 matches (Cro - Den, Arg - Fra - Eng - Col) and that will be my 3 transfers after round of 16. The last player is from Belgium. Here is the team

    Muslera - Kasper

    Carvajal - Lovren - Miranda - Meunier - Granqvist

    Banega - Isco - Coutinho - Quintero - Claesson

    Griezmann - Kane - Suarez

Although I like what you're doing, id focus more on the actual players you want rather than making sure all your players progress. It's too unpredictable to be sure so just target the likely point scorers in this round and you should still be able to get 11 players in the quarters, especially with 3 transfers.

How are you not getting Lukaku vs JPN over Suarez?

Otherwise that looks solid with that style of playing. I personally quite dislike having 2 goalkeepers since it's often wasted value but I see how some people prefer a balanced squad over fodders.

    PRO TIP:

I see a lot of people getting Kawashima (4.4) as a 2nd cheap GK
But unless a miracle happens and Japan beat Belgium then this is a transfer waiting to happen once they are knocked out.
Its much better getting a 4.0 non playing GK (or if your lucky still have a 3.9 GK) then just use them instead as once JPN are knocked out its going to take a transfer to free up the funds in the GK (you only have 3 transfers)
Its this or just invest more in GKS and gett 2 playing GKs that you expect to progress.

    1. QuintonFortune25
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

That's what I've done, the only concern is that if my keeper gets knocked out (Subasic) I have to use a transfer next round on my keeper but there may be more pressing matters by then.

    Muslera - Olsen
    Meunier - Miranda - Carvajal - Trip - Strinic

Since I have no WC left I'm going for 3 lightweight mids to leave on the bench for later as I won't have enough transfers to replace all those knocked out. Plus they provide some cover for my Belgium/England picks.

Still deciding whether Countinho > Modric/Eriksen is worth it due to them being penalties?

Yeah good team but I prefer to have a playing defender because for ~5.5 you can get a decent pick but you can't say the same for midfielders.

How do you guys that haved WC'd earlier prepare your team to allow flexibility in for players getting eliminiated? In my current draft i have a backbone of more expensive players from teams i think will proceed longer in the tournament, the likes of brazil spain with 4 and 3 each and 2 players from belgium and croatia. However i also have cheaper players from countries more likely to be eliminated such as colombia sweden and japan. The risk is of course that the cheaper players get eliminated and are hard to transfer out for players from better teams. How do you guys cope with this problem?

I cope with this problem by picking cheap players who will likely be knocked out to leave em on the bench for later rounds. Even if you still have your WC you will struggle to have 15 starters next round.

    RMT pls

    Courtois • 3.9
    Meunier • Godin • Carvajal • R.Rodriguez • Granqvist
    De Bruyne • Eriksen • Isco • Quintero • C.Sanchez
    Lozano • Kane • Lukaku

Gambling on Brazil and Croatia exit in the R16 or QF.

    SUBASIC

    TRIPPIER GRANQVIST STONES BOYATA

    ERIKSEN MODRIC COUTINHO

    COSTA KANE LUKAKU

    (PICKFORD, DALSGAARD, INUI, QUINTERO)

I'll re-mix this to put players out in order of play, but this would be how I'd line it up if I couldn't (i.e. best guess of results).

    Any thoughts?

With the way the cup has gone, mostly working on my guesses of who'll continue, and set piece takers where possible.
If I had to pick a single Captain on this, from day one, it'd be Modric.

Just swap Escobar for a playing 3.9 playing Japan def like Sakai - theres no downside to doing this at all

    Pick one:

    A) Coutinho
    B) Modric
    C) Eriksen

Currently on Countinho (form and likley to profress far) but tempted by the other 2 as they are on penalties (more so Modric)......

Anyone thought of chasing price rises this week to build team value?

I'm bringing in Claesson and Granqvist to build team value. If Sweden progress, great. If not, they have at least increased my TV by 0.1m. Also buying T. Silva this week for the same reason.

        My mistake -

"Upon completion of the group stage, player prices will change depending on performances."
