Fantasy Premier League managers got their first indication of the penalty-taking pecking order at Newcastle in the latest round of pre-season friendlies.

Meanwhile, Tom Heaton got some more minutes under his belt in Nick Pope’s absence, and Richarlison impressed for Watford.

We’ve got all the latest goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from pre-season.

Burnley 0-1 Shrewsbury Town / Burnley 0-2 Blackpool

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Tom Heaton (£5.0m) registered another hour of football for Burnley with Nick Pope (£5.0m) still yet to return following the World Cup. The former Manchester United man was involved in one of two concurrent friendly matches played behind closed doors at the Clarets’ training ground on Tuesday.

First team players were split evenly across the two pitches but neither XI could find a breakthrough against League One opposition.

Daniel Agyei was the most dangerous for Burnley against Shrewsbury but in the end a Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) own-goal was the difference.

On the other pitch, Sam Vokes (£5.5m) and Nakhi Wells (£4.5m) went closest but Joseph Dodoo and Harry Pritchard got the goals for Blackpool.

The only players other than Pope not to be involved in either match were Robbie Brady (£5.5m), Steven Defour (£5.5m), Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), although the latter is now back in training after returning from World Cup duty with Iceland.

BURNLEY XI v SHREWSBURY: Heaton (Legzdins 60’); Taylor, Long, Tarkowski, Lowton; Koiki (Chakwana 60’), Westwood, O’Neill, Lennon; Agyei, Wood.

BURNLEY XI v BLACKPOOL: Legzdins (Lindegaard 45’); Ward, Mee, Dunne, Bardsley; Walters, Cork, Hendrick, McNeil; Wells (Massanka 45’), Vokes.

ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Sean Longstaff, Christian Atsu (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Matt Ritchie (£6.0m), Dwight Gayle (£6.0m)

Christian Atsu (£5.5m) appears to have the advantage in the Newcastle United penalty-taking pecking order after the club’s first pre-season match.

The Magpies were 2-0 winners over St. Patrick’s Athletic, with Atsu scoring the second from the spot after Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) was fouled.

As a precautionary measure, Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m) did not take part in the match due to muscle tightness. Jacob Murphy (£5.0m), Paul Dummett (£4.5m) and Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) were all absent too.

For the first goal, Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) pounced on a loose ball, drove forward and played in Joselu (£5.0m), whose shot was saved. Matt Ritchie (£6.0m) gathered the rebound and his deflected cross fell to central midfielder Sean Longstaff, who struck the back of the net.

Exciting attacking midfielder Kenedy (£5.0m) had two chances in the second-half, hitting the post and forcing a good save out of Saints goalkeeper Barry Murphy, furthering his appeal for the new FPL season.

The result was settled late on when Gayle was fouled in the penalty area after being put through by Atsu. The latter took the spot-kick and dispatched it confidently.

NEWCASTLE UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Darlow (Sels 45’); Manquillo (Clark 45’), Lejeune (Roberts 45’), Yarney, Fernandez (Yedlin 45’); Diame (Shelvey 45’), Longstaff; Aarons (Kenedy 45’), Pérez (Armstrong 45’), Ritchie (Atsu 45’); Joselu (Gayle 45’).

FC KÖLN 1-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Andre Gray (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Richarlison (£6.5m)

Andre Gray (£6.0m) and Richarlison (£6.5m) were the brightest players in Watford’s first match of pre-season, which they drew 1-1.

The pair linked up well going forward and both had good chances to score, with the Brazilian stationed on the left-flank but constantly drifting in to support Gray.

It was the two of them who combined for the Hornets’ only goal of the match in the first-half. Will Hughes (£5.0m) won possession and put Richarlison through, who then slid the ball across to Gray to finish at the far post.

Gray had the chance to make it two when, again, Hughes won the ball in midfield and this time released Daryl Janmaat (£5.0m). His cross was close to the former Burnley man, but it was turned behind for a corner.

Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) came on for Ben Foster (£4.5m) at half-time and could have done better for Köln’s equaliser. Salih Oczan’s low cross from the left was easily turned into the empty Watford net by Jhon Córdoba after a poor decision from the Brazilian.

WATFORD FIRST-HALF XI: (4-1-4-1): Foster; Masina, Kabasele, Cathcart, Janmaat; Capoue; Richarlison, Pereyra, Hughes, Sema; Gray.

WATFORD SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Gomes; Holebas, Britos, Mariappa, Femenia; Hoban, Wilmot; Success, Sinclair, Lukebakio; Deeney.

    @DeanJonesBR

Makes sense that Kasper Schmeichel would be on the radar of Chelsea and Roma but both will also be aware that Leicester value him at over £50m

It's amazing to see how much more balanced the team becomes by downgrading Salah to Mane.
    So
    A) Salah Jota Cairney
    or
    B) Mane Willian Ramsey
    ?

A by a long shot. You'll just be dismantling your team in GW3 to get Salah in otherwise, let's be real.

I feel like trying if needed and since the best and most expensive defenders are priced as much as newbie mids like Jota and Sessegnon. That is value.
Salah was locked in my team since draft #1, but I've started thinking there are more points to get from a spread of Mane Willian Ramsey than Salah Jota Cairney.

I always think like this but some extremely cheap punk (usually from a promoted team) rears his head pretty quickly (Mooy/Gross) and people just get him in and keep Salah - then a Ramsey/Willian benching really sticks the boot in (happened at the beginning last year with Fabregas/Willian/Son and then Mahrez for me - all outscored by those two)

I also got/kept Countinho & Mane for ages last season and ignored Salah as some lucky hype-job :D...it did not end well, even though Coutinho scored very well (when he wasn't injured) - even when he scored well, Salah did too anyway

First crack, not looked at many RMTs so far

    Pickford 4.0
    Mendy Kola Cedric Long 4.0
    Sanchez Sane Mane Deloufail 4.5
    Auba Firmino Tosun

Delofail is a 5.5 placeholder. Not looked at this range yet

Yeah, it's really sad, couple years ago it was Aguero, then Kane, now Salah, we need more open minded people in here 🙂

Going back to your team the only thing I don't like is defense, Kola might be not nailed so you need to monitor, same goes for Long (Burnley chap I assume), your 4.0 defender probably won't play so you might be left with two playing DEFs every week.
Downgrading Sanchez (love this punt btw) or Tosun seems the only way to upgrade your defense.

I’d downgrade Bellerin and upgrade Kenedy. Arsenal’s opening fixtures are unlikely to get clean sheets and then bring him in later if you really want him. Or if you like the structure as is I think PVA is a better option than Bellerin.

Any decent options on the bench to cover Mahrez rotation, injuries and avoiding 4 at the back for away games against the top 6 ?

Personally I'm going with King up top instead of Arnie which leaves me with 0.5 itb for changes when needed. Loads of good options at 5m to swap between with Douglas and Cairney depending on form and fixtures but they look great to start with. Obviously I'll have a 4.0 keeper and only pre season will tell which subs are best but keeping my eye on Sorloth Kamara Chalobah Kennedy Peltier Wan B etc so cover shouldn't be an issue. Will swap between King Arnie Zaha. If someone gets injured you transfer them out!

So your starting 11 has Elyounoussi?, two promoted Wolves players in Jimenez & Douglas (any PL experience?) rotation risked D Silva and what may be a largely non-starting bench ? 😉

        1. Jarnathan
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 6 days ago

Yep, I think Elyounoussi represents excellent value at 6.5 given his stats last year (which includes a goal and an assist against Man U in the CL).

Let's also not pretend that Wolves will do less than 10th place, given their performance last year and the investment in their squad. You may argue that 2 is too many, and I may swap Jimenez to Sorloth if Sorloth looks like starting, but the stats for all 3 players are nothing short of stunning.

D Silva is a risk I agree, but I think he'll play the first 3 matches. After that we'll all know a lot more.

Hi all, please can you tell me if this team can be a stepping stone to my life's objective of winning fpl. I would like to quit while I'm on top and have targeted this season for this.

But let me not waffle, this is it:

    Hennessy

    Coleman Douglas Cedric

    Salah Siggurdson mkhitaryan Deulofeu

    Kane Aguero Zaha

    Speroni, Daniels, Stephens, Bednarak

I like it, maybe too many risks though? Would consider swapping Kane for someone like Firmino & improving GK.

Also would be tempted with a more reliable midfielder. But they do have potential to be great

What would you say are the risks? When making it I wasn't sold on mkhitaryan and Deulofeu

With the keeper it was always just an area I can't bring myself to spend money on. Just figured I put both crystal Palace keepers so if one doesn't play the other will come on.

Deulofeu has never really made it in the prem & he's at quite a weak but not the main man there.

Mkhi I think could be very good, but for the costs I see it as a risk as he hasn't proven under the new manager & also isn't the main playmaker/goalscorer from there midfield.

With Everton I think Pickford is a great shout for save points but I can't trust the defence.

I hear what you're saying on the GK situation but there are some really good 4.5 options & that could ultimately mean 100 points more at the end of the season

What's the general idea with benches? I see it as potential for them to gain £ or more options if you want to change formation.

Should I see more as fodder that I probs won't use anyway?

Depends on the person playing. Personally I prefer to put rubbish on there so I have more money to spend on my starting 11, I just try to get atleast 2 guys that can come on if I need them to

For me it’s £4.5 mill nailed players that start every game week, or if you are lucky a 4.0 defender

Currently Typically I am considering bench fodder of the likes of Patricio, Fabs in goal, defenders of Cedric, Daniels, Aaron Wan-Bissaka 4.0, Tompkins, Mids like Stephens and Kenneth Zohore up top if I go for 442 if Arnie leaves WHU

A bit light up top I feel and heavy in defence, I'd want atleast one more premium striker with firmino. Can be done by downgrading the bench and maybe one of the premium defenders.

Double up of city also not recommended, especially when spending that kind of cash

I hear that completely. I have always spent a lot in defence as they are the kind of players you can put in & just stick there for the season & they are consistent points.

I think also if not for the world cup I would have found a way to get Lukaku in

    3. Zladan

      Is Firmino premium enough?

You’d need to cough up £1.5m to bring in a Auba, Kaku, Kun... or £3m to bring in Kane.

That’s before/after finding funds to bring in Salah.

Safest option is Salah + £11m forward and use that as a structure.

    Pickford / Stekelenberg
    Mendy / Robertson / Douglas / Tomkins / Wan-Bissaka

Reports say €65M + 10M of add-ons... speculation of course.

I think that it's a lot. I'm very happy to see us move to fix the obvious issue.

As long as it doesn't stop us buying other players like Fekir, then I'm not bothered about how much we pay for Alisson. If we pay under 100 mil euros for Salah and Alisson then i think we have done very well

Yeah Agreed. I think the money is there regardless - given the Coutinho sale and the CL run.
I expect him to have the funds to afford the targets he has. Whether we get them I don't know but if they can add Alisson and Fekir to Keita/Fabinho/Shaq then I'm very happy with the window indeed.

          Expecting good things 🙂
