All four of the goals scored in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-offs, perhaps unsurprisingly, came courtesy of one side, as three teams began their 2018/19 campaigns with clean sheets.

Sadio Mane upstaged Mohamed Salah and co with a brace in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham United, who saw Marko Arnautovic slope off in the second half with a possible injury.

Southampton and Burnley played out a goalless draw on the south coast, meanwhile, though the early withdrawal of Cedric Soares saw the Portuguese defender miss out on the clean sheet points.

Our penultimate Scout Notes of the weekend focuses on the main Fantasy talking points at Anfield and St. Mary’s.

Liverpool 4-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Sadio Mane (£9.5m) x2, Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), James Milner (£5.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)

Liverpool’s much-owned attacking trio all delivered returns as Jurgen Klopp’s side strolled to a 4-0 victory over an uninspired West Ham.

It took only 19 minutes of the match at Anfield for the seemingly inevitable to happen: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) on hand to tap home a low cross from Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), the Scot’s fifth assist in his last nine appearances for the Reds. That strike was also Salah’s 20th league goal at Anfield in as many starts.

Salah could so easily have had a second goal in the first half, too, with Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) denying the Egyptian from point-blank range after he was played in by Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Sadio Mane (£9.5m) was to score on the first day of the season for the third year in a row, tapping home a James Milner (£5.5m) cut-back after the veteran midfielder had salvaged a deep Robertson cross.

Mane grabbed a second in controversial circumstances, finishing from an offside position after Firmino had poked the ball into his path.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m) capped off Liverpool’s victory with two minutes of normal time remaining, tapping home after Milner’s corner had been deflected into his path by Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m).

While Liverpool’s starting front three had a familiar look, Klopp’s second-half substitutions gave Fantasy managers a first proper glance at how the Reds could line up without one of their exalted trio.

Firmino was the first of the three to be hooked and his 68th-minute departure – Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) replacing him – saw Salah move to the centre, Mane switch to the right and Naby Keita (£7.5m) push up from the central midfield to the left flank.

Keita impressed in both positions, but Klopp stated after the match that he sees the summer signing from RB Leipzig featuring mostly in the centre, at least in the short term:

He can play different positions of course, but I think No.8 is his best in the moment, so that’s all cool.

Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m) replaced Mane on the right in the final ten minutes, with Sturridge sent on for Salah in the centre-forward role as the match entered its closing stages.

Klopp also provided an update on Dejan Lovren (£5.0m), who missed Sunday afternoon’s victory, after the match:

He is not fit. Let me say it like this, last year he already had a few problems with that but he could obviously play – and played really good.

Recovery days were always enough then it was not a problem and he was in the next session again. We did not train a lot in the end of the season, of course, because we were more or less constantly playing, but he played constantly.

Now in the World Cup, [playing] three times [for] 120 minutes it got a bit worse, but I am pretty sure it will settle in the next one, two or three weeks. In that time he can probably for sure train already, but not the full programme, so that will then take time.

In the end, it is serious but not that serious, so it’s not that we need to be afraid that it will take him until whenever. In the moment he is not available, that’s true.

Joel Matip (£5.0m) and Ragnar Klavan (£4.5m) both missed out on the match-day squad through injury.

West Ham’s dismal afternoon was worsened by the sight of Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) – owned by over 20% of FPL managers – gingerly making his way from the pitch with a quarter of the match remaining.

The Austrian, who reportedly passed a fitness test before the game, was replaced by Andriy Yarmolenko (£7.0m) on 68 minutes but – as was the case with Richarlison yesterday – there were no clues in his manager’s post-match press conference as to the extent of Arnautovic’s problem.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) meanwhile was also missing from the 18-man squad, but again, Manuel Pellegrini failed to elaborate on his left-back’s absence after the defeat.

The Hammers began the match in the same 4-3-3 formation rolled out in much of pre-season, but their first-half struggles led to a change in system at the break: Declan Rice (£4.5m) was sacrificed for Snodgrass, who played just off Arnautovic in a 4-2-3-1.

Among the headline set-piece news was Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) taking two of the Hammers’ four corner-kicks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) going close with a direct free-kick attempt for the hosts.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson: Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson: Milner, Wijnaldum, Keita: Salah (Sturridge 88′), Firmino (Henderson 69′), Mane (Shaqiri 81′)

West Ham United XI (4-3-3): Fabianski: Fredericks, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Rice (Snodgrass 46′), Noble, Wilshere; Antonio, Anderson (Hernandez 62′), Arnautovic (Yarmolenko 67′)

Southampton 0-0 Burnley

Clean sheets all round at St. Mary’s – except for the 8.2% of FPL managers who own Cedric Soares (£4.5m), who was withdrawn on 55 minutes as part of a double substitution by Mark Hughes.

Cedric’s participation in the match had been in some doubt due to illness, but there was no suggestion that his substitution was anything other than tactical, with the Saints switching from a 3-4-2-1 to a flat-back four upon the Portuguese wing-back’s departure. Stuart Armstrong‘s (£5.5m) withdrawal in the same reshuffle was injury-related though, with the former Glasgow Celtic midfielder limping off after picking up a knock.

Danny Ings (£5.5m) was thrown on for his Saints debut in place of Armstrong and impressed, providing a fantastic opportunity for Jack Stephens (£4.5m) and going close himself with a rising drive.

Hughes spoke highly of the deadline day capture from Liverpool:

You saw Danny’s clever play today, linking and retaining possession. He allowed us to move further up the field and that augurs well. We’re looking forward to getting him up to speed.

Having played nearly all of pre-season with a three-man backline, Hughes faces a dilemma or two ahead of the trip to Everton next weekend.

The Saints looked far better after a switch to 4-4-2 in the second half, with Stephens moving across to right-back and substitute Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.5m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) providing width on the flanks for Ings and Charlie Austin (£6.0m)/Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m).

Mario Lemina (£5.0m), whose sum attacking returns in 2017/18 amounted to one goal and an assist, was notable for his involvement in the Burnley box and registered four attempts on goal.

Burnley were worthy of a point having been the better of the two teams in the first half and producing a solid defensive display in the second 45.

Ben Mee and James Tarkowski (£5.0m) were as excellent as ever at the heart of the defence, though the former was indebted to a goal-line clearance from Ashley Westwood (£4.5m) after almost putting through his own net.

Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started on the bench as Chris Wood (£6.5m) ploughed a lone furrow up front, though both strikers were introduced as substitutes late in the match. Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) began the match as Wood’s main support from midfield, as Sean Dyche reverted to the 4-4-1-1 system he used at the start of 2017/18.

Joe Hart (£4.5m) intriguingly began the game for the Clarets between the sticks, with Tom Heaton (£5.0m) fit enough to take his place among the Burnley substitutes.

Speaking of the former Manchester City shot-stopper, Dyche said:

He’s a very experienced keeper and he’s been bought in for a reason to challenge Tom, firstly, because of the injury to Popey, and now Anders.

He has to keep his mentality, his focus, and he did, and when called upon, safe hands, and a mature performance. But he’s a top keeper, simple as that, and I’m very fortunate to have top keepers and top people.

That Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) finished the match with six saves and three bonus points said much about Burnley’s goal threat, with Hendrick and Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) being denied by the Saints goalkeeper and Jack Cork (£5.0m) unlucky to have an effort ruled out for offside.

Southampton XI (3-4-2-1): McCarthy; Hoedt, Vestergaard, Stephens; Soares (Elyounoussi 56′), Romeu, Lemina, Bertrand; Armstrong (Ings 56′), Redmond; Austin (Gabbiadini 72′)

Burnley XI (4-4-1-1): Hart; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward; Gudmundsson (Taylor 87′), Westwood, Cork, Lennon; Hendrick (Barnes 76′); Wood (Vokes 73′)

I did something similar (Stephens to Neves) with my 0.5 ITB. Most here would frown at that move. But I think it adds valuable cover to a team. Especially if you're like me and have opted for two 4.0 defenders.

This is going to be hella fun this season. Besides maybe United I think all of the top 6 will be big scorers and we'll be chasing the next big score every week. We hit with Liverpool this week(and Mané in particular) but we already have City(HUD) & Spurs(FUL) to look forward to next week and certainly need to be flexible. I am not saying move your Mané/Kane's out for Sterling/Kane but I think we have to be a lot more flexible week-by-week this season.

Kane hasn’t smashed it since like February. Something is off. The World Cup was all about Pens and accidental heal deflections. He may score, but it will be a Pen or something lucky

This was my mindset to start the season, I wanted to work round a core of Salah, Kane & Kun but I doubt I will be able to fit in the likes of Hazard/Auba with that structure. Very open to moving around the big boys now, you can have four and Salah will probably permanently be one of them.

PPM is just rubbish unless you are looking at a whole seasons worth of data. Check out some of the daily fantasy games, players are priced on a week-by-week basis which is the way we(or at least, I) play the game.

If you got Aguero or Salah,I see no point in getting in Kane, as Spurs play united in GW3, which would then be another transfer

I don't feel to comfortable captaining Kane but those City fixtures are too good. That means no Kane.

Liverpool scoring for fun so no Kane again

3 pool 3 city almost guarantees goals. Even if they don't score one week, they will make up in the others.

Almost tempted to perma cap Salah and rotate the team picks around the fixtures

I would agree but I think Chelsea/Arsenal might be alright this season for 'whippings', any game against 'weak' opposition is a potential 3/4 goal game for those sort of attacks. We will find this sort of thing easier in a few weeks when we have some true reflection of how bad some of the defences are other than clues like being called 'Huddersfield' or 'Cardiff'.

Would you go down the Haz route, or stick to Willian?

Mkhit looked a bit lost today and Arsenal were a bit toothless without Laca or Torreira

I would definitely be looking at Hazard over the next couple of games with a view to the BOU/CAR games in GW4/5. Arsenal were just crap, not sure what Emery was thinking not playing Torreira and going with Cech in goal. I would still be backing Arsenal to be clinical against a terrible West Ham defence playing that awful Pellegrini high line with no pressure and then Warnock's Championship-level Cardiff side in GW3. Laca will start as well, really fancy him.

Cech playing from the back was a disaster but Leno not exactly that much better at it either, but an improvement!

Don't think I can spend the dollas on Haz, he dissapoints me every year. Willian, maybe

Yeah, I didn't fancy Mahrez after seeing him today. He doesn't look "right" as a city player - if that makes sense.

At the same time I've B. SIlva and not to confident about his performance either! but pre season and today he's returned well. Also Dave still AWOL and Gundogan not that convincing either.

I might ship him out myself, in fact im sure I will great fixtures but he not going to dominate the points and he quite pricey, has to be a massive rotation risk next week. Not sure he firpts their style of play very well

Yeah he was brilliant at Leicester but just looks average at City! Maybe he needs to get up to pace with Pep's game, so put it down to today. But it wasn't too convincing. Everyone is playing 90mph at City and he looked like the was cruising at 60

Maybe one more week to see what happens? Sterling is just too much dollas with Aguero at this point in time

Mahrez hasn't gelled with his teammates yet, he'll come good in a couple of months.

Gundy was a bit meh - won't KdB take his place and leave Bilva to start again?

Kun wasn't sharp either and might get hoiked for Jesus again and even earlier, imo.

I can see Mendy, Bilva and Sterling all starting and having very good games again next week.

Yeah I don't see Gundogan as a main player. Surely Fernandinho the base of a 433 wingers mid with B.Silva and Kdb in front and Sane Aguero Sterling in front of them again. Mahrez' minutes might be limited if that's the main 11 which slightly takes it away from silva who can also play there, but surely Dave will be replaced with Bernardo this season a bit more

I'll be weary when Dave is back though!

Some thoughts on Bernardo Silva here. It was all set on ditching him for Mikhi after GW2 but looking at city and the rotation risks i'm thinking now he may be a season keeper if he's seen as in the mix and level with the rest. The guy scored 112 points last from 1514 minutes, well under half the games given he took a while to get into the side.

Now looking at the City midfield let's say it's between Gunda, Fernandinho and KDB for the deeper lying spots and then he fights with Sterling, Mahrez, DSilva & Sane for the attacking three behind the striker. Given his price he's a great pick IF he's given as much gametime as the rest, even better if he's looked at the FPL guy and not more of a CL player. Obviously the odd 20 minutes cameo and complete game miss will sting but that's to be expected with City and better that with 7.5m than 9m+

Will be intersting to see his points tally/minutes at the end in comaprison to Mikhi, Sigurdsson, Willian, Shaqiri etc. I really can't see much better value or a better prospect in the 7 - 8.5 mill bracket besides DSilva.

Problem is when Sané and KDB return, as they’re going to get points too.

City are a tough one because on any given day any one of their mids can get a haul. I just think it’s safer going for someone whose pretty much the main man in his team’s midfield.

Like Mahrez was at Leicester last few seasons.

Richarlison and Neves look like they could be that kind of player this season although, granted, it’s just one game sample size.

I'm delighted to own him. You can never say one of the plethora of City mids is a season keeper but he looks nailed for now. Along with W-B right now i think he's the best value player in the game.

        • 9 Years

Yeah i agree no City mid can be classed as a season keeper given Pep is Pep and CL football but my point was all being equal selection-wise he's the guy to hold onto given the value.

      The way I see it
      Ederson
      4 defenders
      KDB & Fernandinho
      Aguero or Jesus

Leaves 3 places (most weeks) left for Sane, Sterling, Dilva, Mahrez, Gundogan and Bilva to split among one another

I have Ederson as i am sure Mendy will sit out a game that will be a sure clean sheet and very frustrating. Sterling is class i'm just not sure he'll score enough more than Bilva to justify the 3.5m more.

Anyone else with Robertson, Trent and Salah wishing they had Sadio right now? Getting him would mean a -8 and losing Trent & Auba, so no can do but it's times like this you wish you had 4 Liverpool slots. All 4 are great options in their own right though.

You are not going to like my reply, I went with Mane instead of Salah. I feel he is essential this season. I know Salah is even more essential but hopefully Mane will probably be enough cover for most of the games and I just couldn’t afford 13m on a player. Gives the overall team a better balance.

Gives me the option of doubling up with Firmino if necessary.

It’s a lottery, just keep who you have. Although I would prefer to have at least 2 of their attackers. Have Salah, Mane, Firmino myself.

If Mane’s second goal was ruled out offside, you won’t be debating this.

I considered robbo + VVD + Salah but it weakens the value of the 9.5 slot if you do that. Went with Mane in the end over VVD for that exact reason. You have to recognise these things.

Mane got a bit lucky yesterday.

We wouldn't even be discussing this if TAA had scored with that free kick.
Trent and Robertson get so far forward that they often seem like attackers anyway.
I avoided Mane and Firmino just because I thought the Liverpool full backs were better value. A brace by Mane hasn't made me change that thinking.
When I will be worried is when the Champions League kicks off. It would be horrible to have both Robertson and TAA benched at the same time.

Early drafts i had TAA, but ultimately found the funds to upgrade him to Robbo. Thinking is that Salah plays on the right, so TAA is going to have a harder time assisting his goals, while Mane likes to cut inside and run across the face of goal before scoring, also limiting TAA’s potential for assists there. And, with Clyne in there, there’s more change of rotation than Robbo faces from Moreno (imho). The free kick angle is interesting, but i think Robbo is definitely worth the extra 1m.

On the midfield front, I’m definitely not happy about not being able to afford Salah, but mane for me was always going to be good cover. It was the difference between not having someone like Mendy and a second premium striker. ATM I’m feeling pretty chuffed with my choices, though in FPL fortunes change at lightspeed!

Hey guys, considering to transfer VVD to Mendy for FT and bring in another Liverpool defender in a week or two. Mendy have a great fixture next week and also it doesn’t look like VVD is the best LFC defender to own. What do you guys think?

    Cheers

I’d have gone with Robertson (which I did indeed actually do) but VVD is more nailed than Mendy, imo, and Liv should get plenty of CS’s so he looks a solid pick.

      I’d keep him.

Do you have no one else you could transfer out?

Hold on to VVD for now. Might want to get Mendy but I'd wait and see the next City game and how the team will play first

VVD least likely Pool defender to be rotated IMO.

    1. Who is, in your opinion, the City midfielder most likely to start next against Huddersfield?
    2. Everton have signed Mina and Zouma, but have had Jags suspended. Is Keane nailed for the next fixture? If yes, how long do you think until the new signings take over?

Prior to this I was thinking Mahrez. Food for thought I suppose.
Do you suppose De Bruyne may start?

Mina/Zouma + Keane is the preferred pairing imo

Keane will be nailed imo. Him and Mina should start.

Is B. Silva's spot nailed on? Want to get him in.

When everyone is ready to play, no.

For now, maybe. But if I didn't have him I wouldn't bring him in

Want to get Lacazette in by gw3 what looks better
    A) Lacazette Trippier TAA
    Or stick with
    B) King Bilva Robbo

Basically is it worth upgrading King to Lacazette while downgrading Robbo to TAA and Bilva to Trippier

How do you downgrade Bernardo Silva to Trippier?

I meant get lacazette in for gw4* which would take 4 transfers 4.0 def to Trippier
            Bilva to 4.5 mid

You're planning way too much here - that never works in my experience.

    Foster (Hamer)
    Mendy, Roberson, Tomkins, (WBA, Peltier)
    Salah, Mane, Richarlison, Mahrez (Stephens)
    Auba, King, Zaha

Should I ship Mahrez?.. I think there’s better options

    A. Mahrez > B.Silva
    B. Mahrez > Pogba
    C. Other?

    And then.. Stephens > Neves?

Huddersfield look dreadful. Mahrez could easily score next week, even if it's as a sub

        Hold on to him
Pogba is definitely a bad call
