We have updated the Watchlist after the events of Gameweek 7.

The biggest changes see some budget options at the back make their way into the goalkeeper and defender sections.

We’ve gone over the changes we’ve made to those areas of the Watchlist in this article, with midfielders and forwards to come later in the week.

Goalkeepers

Based mostly on fixtures, Alisson (£5.6m) has finally moved above Ederson (£5.6m). The two shot-stoppers will face each other in Gameweek 8 before Liverpool have two appealing fixtures against Huddersfield and Cardiff. Meanwhile, Manchester City follow-up their trip to Anfield with a home match against Burnley and an away day at Tottenham.

Over the next six fixtures, neither goalkeeper can support any fixture factors, either good or bad. We’ve also dropped Alisson down to a B for form as he has kept just one clean sheet in his last four matches. He also ranks 10th for form among goalkeepers on the official FPL app.

Rui Patrício (£4.5m), David De Gea (£5.9m) stay where they are on the list but their factors change slightly. The Wolves man retains an A for form but loses Favourable Fixtures. That’s because Tottenham and Arsenal are coming up in the next six. Meanwhile, De Gea and Manchester United receive similar treatment as they have to travel to Chelsea, Bournemouth and Man City. Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) keeps his place in sixth.

Bernd Leno (£4.8m) comes in for the injured Petr Cech (£5.0m). Arsenal have now kept two clean sheets on the bounce and continue to have decent fixtures. He keeps the place Cech held, just above Joe Hart (£4.5m), who was unable to add to his clean sheet count against Cardiff.

Mat Ryan (£4.5m) is a new addition to the watchlist. He comes on with a C for form but a Favourable Fixtures factor. No side ranks higher for defence on our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks than Brighton.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.6m) is coming to the end of his time on the Watchlist with some very difficult fixtures on the horizon. Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) remains bottom of the pile, but still in the conversation with Newcastle’s upcoming favourable fixtures.

Defenders

Marcos Alonso (£6.9m), Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.3m) remain unchanged as the top three among defenders. The Spurs man keeps a rotation risk factor until we know about the injury to Serge Aurier (£5.8m).

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty (£4.5m) creeps above Aymeric Laporte (£5.6m) after a second double-figure haul of the season in Gameweek 7. He looks a more attacking option than the Frenchman, who remains our chosen Man City asset based on the fact that he is the only defender to have played every minute so far this season. With the aforementioned changes to Patrício, neither of these two options has a fixture-related factor.

Set piece takers Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Jose Holebas (£4.9m) come next. The Man United man has a favourable fixture in Gameweek 8, while Watford’s Greek left-back faces a favourable run of games between now and Gameweek 12. Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) is still worth considering with Leicester ranked second for defence over the next six Gameweeks on our Season Ticker.

Then we have two new entries. The first is Shane Duffy (£4.5m), with Brighton currently top of the Season Ticker for defence over the next six Gameweeks. The centre-back also has two goals and two assists to his name so far this season. The other new face on the list is Everton left-back Lucas Digne (£4.8m). The former Barcelona man is joint-top with Doherty and Holebas for chances created among defenders over the last four Gameweeks.

As with Dubravka, DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) sits at the bottom of the list waiting for Newcastle’s fixture-swing to complete itself after a Gameweek 8 trip to Old Trafford.

Despite his popularity, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) moves off the list. That’s because his fixtures are set to stiffen up, and he no longer provides as much value as earlier in the season. The Crystal Palace man has risen to £4.3m, so does not open up quite as much room in Fantasy squads as before, and with Arsenal (home), Chelsea (away), Tottenham (home) and Man United (away) four of the next six fixtures, he is likely to be benched by anyone who does own him.

Responsibly happy with my squad but just curious what others would do with it - I have 1FT and 0.4 ITB - go!

    Hennessey, Patricio
    Roberston, Trippier, Alonso, Bennett, Wan-Bassika
    Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Fraser, Stephens
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Wilson

Considered it but I'd lose more sleep over not having Kun then Kane and I don't need the stress. Plus I took a hit last week so don't want to 2 weeks in a row. Plus I'll want Robo back soon

Don't be hit advert. Will hurt you in the end.

Not taking a hit because you did it last week, is an irrational way of thinking. Kane could easily score a brace vs Cardiff. You will be hiding behind a couch. Bring snacks

Thanks for advice man, i'll consider it. I do get scared of going without Aguero though, he could easily score a brace against anyone. It'd hurt me more knowing what I could've had if I didn't make the change, than what a could've had if I did, ya know?

Reassess after CL matches. Kane has fairly sh1tty fixtures after this week. Don't panic, all your strikers are fine and even if Kane braces the -4 is taking that to 10 max, minus whatever the striker you dump scores. High chance of a brace only netting you 3-5 points

probably nothing, Wilson -> Murray/Deeney/Iheanacho would be kinda tempting but could obviously backfire, or just wait a week or two and turn Wilson into Arnie

Yep. Wilson > Murray is top of my potential transfer list. Just looking at it as a cheeky differential punt for the next few weeks as I'm not taking any risks elsewhere really

Dumping someone with 5 returns in 7, more points than Salah and some good fixtures left seems kinda a sucky move

That's certainly what I am considering. The only downsides are losing a little money on Aguero and committing your free transfer a game week in advance.

Incidentally, it didn't sound as though Wilson covered himself with glory last night, despite his 5 pts, so maybe you can think about replacing him.

Despite what I've said above, rolling the transfer does have merit - just don't commit hari kari if Kane scores twice. 😀

    Alisson
    AWB - Alonso - Robertson - Boly - Vertonghen

    Zaha - Aguero - Deeney

    A) Aguero and Robertson -> Kane and Mee (-4), with a wildcard the following week to build up on Liverpool, City, Brighton, Leicester
    B) 1FT - possibly Vertonghen out and Duffy/Mee/Chilwell in
    C) Save and GTG

I'm a bit stuck especially with the Pool v City fixture and having 5 players caught in it.

if you are talking about FPL cup, it starts in GW18 I think. Automatic qualification if you required rank, no signups required.

FFS Cup will probably take place in 2nd half of the season. There will be articles regarding that topic

I hear you but had a bench to cover him over the last few weeks so would have meant a -4 and potentially the player coming in to sit on the bench.
Which is more important money or a points?

I won't answer that as it's pretty obvious which is more important 😀

But I would say that I try not to bench a player who is that expensive. Getting that money re-invested, even for a -4, can be worth it if it's invested correctly

Agreed on benching a premium player but does this apply only when fit?
In my friends case re-investing that money would have meant, more than likely, more hits to get the player back when fit.

I'm kind of in the same situation.. Aguero, 2FTs. I have Wilson (could become Arnie) and Fraser (could become Maddison) but also could just do Aguero > Kane.

Vardy or Lukaku would be my moves, over Arsenal, as Arsenal have some tough travel.

Still, even though I could get Kane, I don't know if I will. Aguero for GW9 looks a great option

If you could give out a single piece of completely generalised FPL advice right now (i.e not aimed at an individuals team), what would it be?

    Mine would be:

Don't panic, roll your transfer and go into the IB with 2FT's. Just so, so much is going to happen with CL, EPL and INTL fixtures in the next weeks. And the number of options available to you with 2FT's far exceed double those with 1FT

I love the options presented by having 2 FTs. Also, often having 2 FTs makes me much more calm about my moves since I know I have a bit of security with the second one, which means I only use one, roll one, and make a better transfer with the one I use.

I'll be saving one of mine to go into the IB with two

Consider fixtures at least 6 game weeks ahead for any player you are transferring in, and if you dont like what you see, dont make the transfer.

    4. Lambert Is A Goal Machine
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

Look beyond the next 2 gameweeks before you lock in your transfers. I think everybody looks at the next gameweek extensively, the gameweek after a bit but rarely do people look at how their transfers might impact their team beyond that horizon (or more importantly, how they might get in certain key players they don't currently own whose fixtures turn).

I think this goes to team structure. Having a team at certain price points making swapping with 1 or 2 FTs max easy.

I have a tendency to plan too far ahead, and either get itchy feet waiting for returns which will come or other options present themselves and I have to ditch the initial plan. My advice would be to only bring in players you would be happy to have for a long time. Punting on players with a couple good upcoming fixtures is creating a rod for your own back.

Team advice: Wolves are great defensive value. Liverpool players are essential due to strength in attack, defense, lack of rotation, and amazing fixtures from next week onwards. Stay away from Man United.
Strategy advice: Save your free hit for a blank gw, save triple captain for a double, save bench boost for the most fixture packed double (and WC immediately before or after).

wildcard when your defence/keeper/subs need a refresh because of form/fixture shift - generally limit FTs used on defence/keepers. Have a playing bench-fodder 8th attacker and use your FTs on your front-7 (every other week if possible, to enable an easy change of funds between midfield and attack)

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

That's a bit limiting. I tend to do that too but on occasion defensive transfers work very nicely - I did Alonso and Mendy to Trippier and Doherty -4 and they have worked very nicely. I may get in Mendy again for Trippier after CAR

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 10 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

yeah - 'limit' isn't the same as don't ever do them, so far I've done Peltier -> Jonny & Kabasele -> Doherty. Next week Shaw -> TAA is on the cards, but that's because I like the rest of my team. If I had a few defenders to change AND wanted to change a couple of midfielders, it's wildcard time. I wouldn't 'waste' a wildcard just to get Aguero/Salah back in, that's what FTs are for.

tbh it's pretty hard to do in practice, I just feel like using a wildcard to flip-flop a couple of players isn't a great idea, would rather save it for when most of the team needs it

"...the number of options available to you with 2FT's far exceed double those with 1FT."

Not true though. Hits are allowed. 🙄

Apart from that, I agree with RCA. Sarri looks to have dialed Alonso back a bit, not surprising after his poor defensive performances against Arsenal and Newcastle.

General advice from me: question the team structure you are using. The most effective structure will vary according to the specific price/performance landscape of that season. 7 games in, that landscape is beginning to take some shape now.

Great advice. One thing I was fixed on one season was what I thought was a perfect team structure. All my decisions were based on putting players in that structure. I did question it, but not enough and ultimately it cost me.

This needs to be revised now with City and other teams likely to rotate more coming closer to Christmas. You can have rotation risks with a strong bench.

Look at your squad, of the players you have, who are you looking to offload in the next 4 weeks, and plan ahead. Do the same with transfers in and plan them (they may not go that way but always plan ahead).

I generally transfer in 2s or 3s (sometimes) - look for big blocks of easy fixtures and aim to hit them at the start of the patch, if another players fixtures turn bad in your squad then look to switch across.. by grouping transfers you can be flexible (e.g. getting a Salah/Kane type player in will generally need a couple of transfers)

Consider nailedness, fixtures and form and keep your formation flexible - rotating cheap players are gold dust!

      I

There are lots of ways to play with varying degrees of success but some of my advice would be the following:

Get cheaper players in place for blocks of 6-10 weeks so that you don't waste transfers on them.
Plan your captaincy for the next 6-10 weeks and make sure that you have one of the best options each week.
Don't get caught up in the hype if someone scores well one week (don't tear your team apart to get them).
      Have a playing bench.
Good fixtures often lead to good form.
Ownership, team coverage and overall rank mean nothing when making a transfer, just get in whoever you think will score the most points.
Saving a transfer one week gives you a 'mini wilcard' the week after when you can manage to get any player for a -4 even if shifting value around different positions.
Actively try to increase team value in the first half of the season.
Never own a defensive midfielder, there are attacking mids available at every price.
Save your chips for double & blank gameweeks when you have a statistically higher chance of deploying them successfully.

This also. Stats are just what you're seeing differentiated into a limited but summarisible and comparible version of events. But you will take in more than you might imagine just by watching.

e.g. don't buy OOP Jeffrey schlupp. Come on, he's obviously crap, it's right there in front of your eyes

*Try to understand how bookies odds is the best representation of likelyhood, then use this in your own desicionmaking.

People like G-Whizz are already helsing you do this by providing you with the "Clean-sheet %", but actually understanding this is of big help. If you can convert odds to likelyhood it will be of great benefit. I find odds for "Clean sheets", "team totals over/under" and "anytime goalscorer" the most beneficial. Keep in mind that "sharper bookies" offer the "truest representation" and that the odds will be at their sharpest as close to kick-off as possible. This basically means that you should atleast wait until after pressers for the markets to adjust to the available information.

A good example of how "good managers" Simply dont pay heed to this can be found by looking at the gameweek that passed. Approximately 8740 Wolves defensive assets were owned by the top 10k last week, but more than 20% of these players were benched. Quite incredible when Wolves almost had 50% likelyhood of a Clean sheet, and several of the picks come with likelyhood of other perks (boly-bps,doherty/Jonny-attackingreturns,patricio-saves). Especially confounding when you consider the players that a lot chose to play instead: alonso, Robertson, TAA and Wan. For referance, Liverpool had 27% likelyhood of a CS, Chelsea and Palace had 24%.

I'm imagining some will chalk this down to hindsight bias, but I dont. Benching Wolves-assets last week was a blatant mistake.

It isn’t true though is it, bookies have private interests and want to make money, don’t want to tell you the truth

Not sure what your aiming at. The *making money" part is exactly why it is "true". Sharp bookies will rely on their margins to make sure they make money. In theory: if they offer better odds than other bookies, they should attract more customers and more investments, as they will be "market-leaders". They will however try to avoid giving you a higher odds than what likelyhood suggests, as thats their way to try to "secure" making money.

          Example:
Pinnacle (sharp bookie) will offer odds of 1.96 if you want to place the bet that there will be more than 2.5 goals in LCFC-Everton. They will also offer odds of 1.96 if you want to place the bet that there will be less than 2.5 goals. Another bookie might give odds of 1.83 on either side of the outcome which might seem a bit confusing, but actually they are telling us the same thing. Boh bookies are positioned at 50% likelyhood at either side of the bet. The only difference is that pinnacle have lower margins, and are therefore offering higher odds.

If Pinnacles, and other sharp bookies, buisnessmodel didnt work, they'd be losing money. But they are'nt. That's because they set the odds well when they drop their lines, then wait for the market to "re-adjust" the opening lines (people placing bets being the adjusting factor). When the lines closes just ahead of kickoff, the odds will be at its "truest" as thats when most information is available.

This is why I pointed out that "understanding odds" is pivotal to be able to use the information. If you check the odds avilable for a clean sheet with a "soft bookie" on a monday, you might get a vastly diferent % of likelyhood than someone checking the odds with a "sharp bookie" on a friday. The other dude is going to be closer to the truth, and he will have a greater edge than you in FPL.

So which bookies tend to be the sharp...est?

            1. WesMantooth

Pinnacle and SBObet are good examples of sharp bookies (very low margins at most of their selections). But soft bookies often have a wider selection of bets, so youll have to use them from time to time. I usually use betbrain to collect data from a selection of bookies.

The important thing to remember is, you have to factor in how the margins of the bookies affect their odds. Lets look at the odds of 2.50. If you run this through a probabilityconverter, you'll get 40% likelyhood.
however,Bookie A has modelled their sportsbook to try and earn 10 cents on the dollar. This means that 2.50 actually is far away from what they consider to be likely.

Based on their margins, its likely to believe that bookie A bleieves the true odds (where everyone breaks even) to be around 2.75-2.80, meaning that the implied likelyhood of a CS is closer to 35-36%.

Now lets take Bookie B. Same odds (2.50), but this is a "shap bookie" that base their sportsbook on earning 2 cents on the dollar. When this bookie offers 2.50 on an outcome their margins suggest that they believe the "true odds" to be approximately 2.55. This in turns tells us that this bookie believes the likelyhood to be approximately 39%.

What this means is that "sharper bookies" offer odds closer to the "true probability" of an outcome. Because they offer the best odds, they also have the most money placed by bettors, which in turn leads to more correct odds.

This is correct. Most casual bettors place bets based on what they believe to be the outcome, when they rather should be asking themselves, is this bet priced wrongly?

A bet is never worth taking if it pays less than what you perceive the likelyhood to be. Sure the bookies Get it wrong from time to time, but very few are able to spot when they are right/wrong. Thats why most people loose money on betting rather than winning.

PS, gwhizz clean sheet odds have been one of the most useful posts to me this season. Absolutely key in my decision to continue to field Mendy and allow my autosub to do the work, so that I can use that FT to capitalise on bigger points gains elsewhere. I've made about 20+ points in recent weeks and the clean sheets %s have helped

GWhizz is a true unsung hero of the community. My guess is that he does the legwork for a lot of people visiting the site. Simply looking up his post is much easier than syphing through all the matches by yourself.

I use his work as a rough guideline for my decisions, and dive in to the data whenever I feel theres a more tricky decision. As GWhizz only use odds from one bookie, dont account for margins and dont wait until after the pressers with releasing them, one cant be 100% confident that his posts are reflecting the truest probability of an outcome come saturday.

Am I correct in my understanding that:

3-1 odds means that 4 bets should result in 3 losses and 1 success

        Therefore

        (1/(Losses + success))*100

        (1/(3+1))*100=25

        25% chance?

I don't think you have followed this correctly. We are working out percentage conversions for single events.

But actually all you have described is the equivalent of betting on two coin tosses at evens. Given a large enough sample you'll win half the time

You can take 10 consecutive bets at 3/1 and loose every single one.
Theres also the chance that you take 10 consecutive bets at 3/1and win every single one.

Anything CAN happen. This is not what were discussing. Likelyhood is the subject.

And an odd of, for example 5/4 needs first to be converted to a ratio of failures to one success, so 5/4 = 1.25:1

This is why I like decimal odds better. Fractions make me seasick. 5/4 converts to 2.25 in decimal odds. Place 100£ and you'll get 125£ in winnings (225-100). Much easier to comprehend.

Just by looking at 2..25, I should be able to calculate that this suggests a probability in the region of 40-50%. Running the numbers through a converter, I'll get the "correct answer": 44.4%.

Your correct that the fraction 3/1 suggests a likelyhod of 25%. As decimal odds (which i prefer), thats the same as 4.00.

Now, if you ever come across this odds, you have to account for the margins of the bookie.

The bookie taking 10 cents on the dollar actually believes the true odds to be closer to 4.40, and thereby the likelyhood is 22-23%

I'd say once you want to make a move, and feel it is worth doing, do it, take a hit if necessary. If you wait a week another fire could spring up, you still don't want to take a hit, and a month later James Maddison is 0.4m more expensive and you still don't have him.

Work out the value that each of your players is offering. If you want to get around 60 points a week then each starting player needs to return 0.72 points per £m. Then make your transfers around the worst performing players in your team.

Im going with 2 defs but umming over an attacking option also. Either of you given any thought to Firmino? He seems to occupy a reliable space (literally) between Salah (hugely expensive) and Mane (cheaper but regressing and not assisting). Firmino has now racked up 2G2A and looks a reliable way into some points. And Milner is not off the cards for me also.
