Will Thomas is among Fantasy Football’s rare polymaths, with the ability to excel in two different formats, Fantasy Premier League and Sky Fantasy Football.

In FPL he has five top 10,000 finishes including overall ranks of 753 and 82, while on Sky he has breached the top 100 on four occasions.

But as Will explains in our latest Meet the Manager video interview, juggling two different formats can have its pitfalls as well as its advantages.

He chats to me about his strategies for success and how to achieve a top finish. We also look back on his 2017/18 campaign, in which hedging his picks across two formats cost him dearly in FPL.

In addition, he reveals how Sky’s patient approach, due to limited transfers, as well as its focus on fixtures with multiple captaincy selections allowed, has helped Will to excel across most of his FPL career.

Will’s views on the current season also prove illuminating, including why managers need to take advantage of an unusually high number of budget gems this term.

He also reveals why he is shunning Harry Kane and is instead pinning his hopes for success on another, far cheaper, striker.

With a current FPL rank of 26,711, he looks to be already on his way to another strong season.

The chat with Will is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here.

I'm happy with my 4 man defense this week attacking wise & imo all 4 could get assists or.goals or both - Alonso, Trippier, Holebas, Doherty. I also think I'll get at least 2 cs's maybe 3. I'm also being aggressive & putting the TC on Kane. I'm only playing Fraser & benching Wilson due to it being an away game. Defensively Watford play narrow & compact through the middle & allow space on the flanks. This will mean Fraser could be whipping in plenty of crosses & I think Wilson will be nullified.

    Hennessey
    Alonso, Trippier, Holebas, Doherty
    Salah, Hazard, Maddison, Fraser
    Kane (tc), Mitrovic

    McCarthy, Wilson, Bennett, Billing

    Am I gtg. Cheers.

Tc usually has higher expected value in double gameweeks. Despite Kanes good form, this will be his third game in a week. I own Kane, and i wanna do it, but then i decided to use my brain instead.

Hey DZ. Which combo do you prefer from gw9 and onwards

    A) Kane + Haz
    B) Aguero + Kane
    C) Salah + Kane
    D) Salah + Haz

Note: Salah is classified as a forward. Its for domestic game not FPL (point system equivalent to FPL's with a few exceptions)

If i try and save wc i can do:
    A. Pickford,Gunnarson to Patricio,Maddison, exact cash.
    B. jimenez to Arnie. ( Have Aguero,Mitrovic.)
    C. Aguero to Kane, and Captain him. This is only a thing i do, if i wc after gw8.

    Pickford Stekelenburg
    Robertson, Alonso, AWB,Bennett,Peltier
    Mane,Hazard,Sterling,Fraser,Gunnarson
    Aguero,Mitrovic,Jimenez.

A would give me a little benching headache between jimenez and Fraser. But kind of overlap with though fixtures.

    Any other ideas?

Why do you have Knockaert as your 5th midfielder? The whole concept of a 5th midfielder is to not play them, no? I also dont like Pereira, he was benched out of the blue 2 games ago. Also would much rather have Salah over Mane, despite the price difference. Hamer is also not playing, so youre stuck with Ryan. That could be ok, but Brighton are pretty bad.

      1. Mondeo
        • 11 Years

Maybe - but there's so many bargains I'm personally going with an extremely strong bench + no Salah.

Reasoning is I want D.Silva and then I can have Ings come off the bench for games he doesn't play.

Lots of ways to play the game, think this year even more than usual!

Youre right in theres no right way to play the game. I just think youre going to leave a lot of points on your bench by having Ings/Knockaer sitting there for atleast half the games. Youre rarely going to utilize the bench players. But hey, to each his own.

For sure - definitely not disagreeing with you, most of the really 'great' players will have a low value/weak bench.

Guess I'm playing an experiment where I try and buy all the bargains, rotate for fixtures and build up team value. Then post Christmas, deploy maximum starting 11 value..

See how it goes! I never seem to threaten a decent finish even when playing smart anyway haha

I`d rather play it my own way and have fun than do it like everyone else and have no fun. Not to compare, but i played an aggressive wildcard last gw to have fun and i thought it was a good idea, and it paid off massively. Everyone in my league thinks im a donk, but i`m having fun. Free Hit - talk to me man! Whats the thinking behind using it this week?

Trying to catch up ground with a punt or just feel there's good value? If we believe the 'largely accepted' logic that a FH chip in a blank game week gives us +20 points, do you believe Kane (C) and others you bring in will get you +20 this week?

Really keen for any thoughts you have - weighing up one myself!

The stars aligned for me, and I really believe I can improve by 20+ this week. I had 3x City (Ederson/Mendy/Kun) and 3x Pool, no Hazard and no Kane. It felt like the perfect time, for me and for my team.

                Going with something like this:

                Hart
                Alonso Rose Shaw
                Hazard Ozil Lamela Knock
                Kane Lacazette Vardy

Still undecided on Rose, Ozil, Lamela and Vardy. Maybe risk it with Trippier, and maybe switch to Son, Arny.

                Thoughts?

Yeah gotcha makes sense - I have 2 less than you in the City/Pool game + Hazard...tough one for me but think you'll have a bunch of fun when it kicks off!

Like your team, I had Ozil and Arnie vs Lamela vs Vardy but otherwise very similar.

Son looked really tired, check out his heatmaps from the last game as well - doesn't feel worth the risk to me, would stick to Lamela/Moura (which is why I went for Ozil i.e. on form, at home, weak opponent and guaranteed start).

I just feel Vardy may not score, he does better against a high defensive line - Leicester aren't great defensively but prefer Maddison to Vardy.

I'd also look at Gudmondsson, he could be a tasty option!

Ahh cheers, Lamela is my gut feeling.

What to do with the 2.2 I have itb?

                    Hart
                    Alonso Rose Shaw
                    Haz Ozil Lamela Gud
                    Kane Lacazette Arny

Can do Trippier and then have Rose on the bench, could go DDG, Azpi over Shaw for the Chelsea double, thoughts?

That could be a good shout - as a Saints fan though I'm not convinced we won't sneak a goal at home (thinking 2-1 win to Chelsea).

I'd try and have at least one decent bench option (Monreal or Gudmundsson etc.) to jump in if Rose/Trippier gets rotated.

I don't mind Arsenal defence vs. Newcastle!

Sorry, but a lot can go wrong with that team. Very inflexible formations as 4-3-3 or 5-3-2 are your only options and sadly given AWB's massive fixture swing, 5-3-2 is just not a good bet.

With a 4-3-3, Mendy's gametime is up for debate, Yedlin's team not doing quite well (though I expect it to turn), and a still leaky Brighton mean it may be a couple of weeks before you see returns and by then you may have made a few changes.

Thats a yikers from me. First of all, Yedlin got subbed off (rotation inc?) and Mendy is still injured, no? Secondly, doubling up on Liverpool midfield when they are out of form is risky, even with the fixtures turning. The loss against Napoli means they have to prioritize CL atleast somewhat. Stephens is injured atm? And even when fit, hes a 2pt playing, so youre banking on Salah/Mane/Haz to produce numbers that four other midfielders could match. It can happen, but its very risky.

Start Robbo over AWB yeah. Even in a 4-3 game he could easily get attacking points, and Palace are pretty dire atm.

A couple of dilemnas still over who to start here. What do u suggest?

    Start-
    1. Patricio 2. Foster.
    1. Robertson 2. Ings.

    Thinking 2. 2.

No other Wolves defence and no Bournemouth attackers which would mean Foster would be a bigger risk/ differential/ reward if he comes good.
He is also @ home with a slightly better chance of a CS according to the bookies but can we afford to go without Wolves def atm?

Two questions I hope to get some opinions on:)

    - Zaha to Kane for free this week a nobrainer right? (will WC very soon and before GW10 when Kane has MCI - then he is out)
    - Diop at West Ham - is he "nailed"?

    Thanks:)

    Patricio (Hennessey)
    Alonso Doherty Holebas (AWB Robbo)
    Hazard Maddison Richarlison Fraser (Hojbjerg)
    Aguero Kane Mitro
    1.6 banked

    Options:
    1. Stick with this lineup and use -4 to bring in Mane/Vardy or Salah/Arnie next week (Kane/Fraser)
    2. Holebas > Trippier for -4 this week

    Thanks in advance for advice

For 1 gw? Then what? Kun has almost double shots as compared to kane with less minutes played. I did kun to kane but that was for 2 weeks before wc. For 1, it may or may not be worth it

I said this the other day tbh, his returns have been pretty underwhelming when you look at who City have played. They couldn't have asked for a much better start

Well that all depends. Theres no guarantees that Kane can deliver, will be his third game in a week. And, assuming you want him back, youre effectively paying 2 transfers to hope Kane blows up this gameweek.

Why bring him back? City passed the 6 easiest fixtures of the first halves, kane shoud outscore him from now til the end

Could. Probably wont. Kun has more points and better stats with over a full game less played. Kane has had 2 tough fixtures so far, Aguero one. You go without him if you want, thats your prerogative.

Kane usually outscores him to be fair, but that's more injury related than anything

Agreed, injuries had a lot to do with it. Just the fact that Aguero plays in a far superior team, and rightly should have far more chances to score.

But how many times have we kept a clean sheet? If you discount the games against Mourinhos United. Hard to concede against teams that dont attack.
