No early return for Son yet as South Korea progress in the Asian Cup

Following our first round-up on Tuesday, our reports from the Asian Cup continue with a look at how South Korea fared in their round-of-16 tie against Bahrain.

South Korea 2-1 Bahrain (AET)

On the day Dele Alli was ruled out until March with a hamstring injury, Son Heung-min and South Korea extended their stay in the Asian Cup to dash hopes – for now, at least – of an early return for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

The Taegeuk Warriors were surprisingly taken to extra time by Bahrain in Rashid yesterday, with Son lasting all 120 minutes of the encounter.

This was Son’s second appearance of the tournament following his departure from north London after the defeat to Manchester United in Gameweek 22.

The in-form Spurs midfielder had played 89 minutes of his country’s 2-0 victory over China last Wednesday, with Son winning the penalty for South Korea’s first goal and then supplying the assist for Kim Min-jae’s headed second.

There was no attacking return against Bahrain but Son was involved in the build-up to South Korea’s first goal, with his pass out to the flank leading to a cross that was turned in by Hwang Hee-chan.

Son was mostly utilised on the left flank in this match, having been deployed in a more central position in his first appearance of the tournament against China.

Bahrain had clearly pinpointed Son as the danger-man in the South Korea side, too, doubling up on the Spurs player whenever he was in possession and not averse to fouling the FPL midfielder to curb his influence.

Son said of his team’s efforts:

It was a tough game. It’s all about attitude, as well, and I’m a bit unhappy with our performance. I think we’re better than that.

South Korea’s progression to the quarter-finals means Son will definitely miss the second leg of Spurs’ Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Thursday, though there is still the chance the midfielder will return in time for Gameweek 24 if his nation are dumped out of the tournament by Qatar this Friday.

An exit at the semi-final stage next Tuesday could see Son back on UK shores in time for the Gameweek 25 visit of Newcastle United, given that the third-place play-off in this competition has now been abolished.

Should South Korea go all the way to the final, Son will return for the Gameweek 26 encounter with Leicester City at Wembley.

Spurs, meanwhile, issued the following statement about Alli:

Following scans and clinical assessment, we can confirm that Dele Alli has suffered a hamstring strain.

Dele will now undergo a period of rehabilitation with our medical staff with the expectation of returning to training in early March.

The Lilywhites should, at least, have Lucas Moura (£6.8m) back in time for Gameweek 24 after Mauricio Pochettino said the Brazilian midfielder was “nearly 100 per cent” following the win over Fulham.

South Korea’s other Premier League representative in the Asian Cup was Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m) but the Newcastle United midfielder’s tournament is over after he picked up a hamstring injury.

The Magpies yesterday confirmed the player had returned to the club in the following statement:

Ki Sung-yueng has returned to Newcastle United after a recurrence of a hamstring injury suffered on international duty with Korea Republic.

He first picked up an injury during his country’s opening game of the Asian Cup, against the Philippines on 7th January, and was substituted.

After suffering a recurrence in training, the 29-year-old has been recalled by the Magpies.

He is now back on Tyneside, where his injury will be assessed by the club’s medical staff.

I really don’t know what to do here? Haz to Pogba is tempting. As is Trent to Kola or even Nasri to Babel! I have 2ft and 0itb. Any opinions?

    Etheridge
    TAA, Lindleof, Digne
    Salah, Hazard, Rich, Nasri
    Auba, Aguero, Rashford

    Guita, Puncheon, Bednarek, WB

Depends on your view of ownership. If you like to protect yourself then Hazard to Pogba looks obvious as Hazard is being sold down and Pogba's ownership is rising.

If you are the opposite then Nasri to Babel is a good punt.

I think Nasri is a waste but you seriously need a Liverpool defender.

I would downgrade Rich and get VVD or Robertson. Use those free transfers to get an active Liverpool defender.

I'd pay good money to see him and Mitro in a cage match

        He'd destroy Mitro in seconds.

No Son, Alli or Kane, but Spurs’ next 4 fixtures are about as good as it gets:

    WAT, NEW, LEI, bur

Which assets are you going for and why?

    I’m quite tempted by Trent & FAnderson -> Trippier & Moura (-4)

      None of them.

If I asked you to take out 3 players from Spurs that would immediately weaken them the most then you'd pretty much have exactly the scenario you have now.

You could possibly swap Alli for Eriksen but that's it.

They barely got by Fulham. Sorry, but I'm not enthralled by what they have left to offering FPL terms.

It's like Liverpool losing Salah, Mane and Firmino and people deciding to get Wijnaldum or Milner in order to get Liverpool coverage.

Nope, its like Liverpool losing Salah, Mane and Firmino and people deciding to get Shaq which would be pretty reasonable.

Shaq & Sturridge would be tasty options in that scenario. Just like Moura & Eriksen might be great options in this scenario. Might being the operative word. Looking forward to watching the match tomorrow night for a better idea.

The problem is the supporting cast around him would now be considerably weaker.

Easier to stop Shaq, for example, when youre not crapping your pants trying to mark Salah, Mane and Bobby.

It's the knock on effect that losing those 3 players causes.

You think the Patriots get to the Superbowl if they lose Brady, Edelman and Gronk and replace them with Hoyer, Slater and Dwayne Allen?

I honestly think this scenario makes Spurs defensive assets the least attractive (Lloris owner unfortunately). A weakened attack means teams will be playing for the scalp. There's points up for grabs and like Fulham teams will be trying to get them. Who knows how many points Spurs can drop over the coming weeks. But they don't have to win games for Eriksen & Moura to get returns. If anything teams playing more offensively because there's blood in the water lends itself to Eriksen & Moura picking up regular points.

FWIW, this doesn't mean I'm actually going for either of them, but they are certainly high on my watchlist.

You are correct that this makes their defence wholly unpalatable now.

Problem offensively is you're relying on Llorente and Lamela to finish your chances off.

It could work out OK but personally I'd wait till Son and Kane come back before spending good FPL bucks on Spurs players.

The talent gap is now no longer as big between Spurs and those easy teams. If I'm any of those teams I'm giving it a good go now when I play them.

You make a very good point, thanks. I’m looking at FAnderson replacements and it’s slim pickings sub 8m. He’s not the flavor of the month, but Richarlison could be the one. Nailed, OOP and reasonably good fixtures.

Aboubakar Kamara either has significant mental health challenges or is an absolute weapon. Or a combination of the two!

By Illuminati statistics one in four of us suffers mental health challenges but I'm unsure how many of us are absolute weapons so I'm unable to do the math to come up with an answer.
