Captains

For the first time this season, Brighton defensive assets are playing a role in the captaincy debate.

The Seagulls have two fixtures in Double Gameweek 34, both of which look very appealing.

They host Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon before Cardiff City come to the Amex Stadium on Tuesday night.

We have discussed the key options in another video on YouTube, which you can watch embedded below.

Shane Duffy (£4.7m) looks to be the most popular of Brighton’s options at the back, given the goal threat he carries and the possibility of clean sheets in each Double Gameweek 34 match.

Mat Ryan (£4.4m) and Lewis Dunk (£4.4m) are the other two nailed-on to start members of the Seagulls’ defence.

Meetings with Bournemouth and Cardiff, both of whom are generally poor away from home, may also bring some of Brighton’s attacking options into the frame.

Glenn Murray (£6.3m) has started 10 of the last 11 Premier League outings so may end up as the most popular midfield or forward option for the captaincy among Brighton players.

However, with just one goal in his last seven, some may turn to Anthony Knockaert (£5.2m), who has a goal and two assists in that time.

However, it is a possibility that turning to the Seagulls for the armband is a risk too far for some managers, Double Gameweek or not.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) is likely to be the favourite for those targeting the single Gameweek matches.

The Tottenham forward has three goals in his last six and has promised more than that ahead of Huddersfield’s visit to north London.

The Terriers began life after relegation with a 4-1 home defeat to Leicester in Blank Gameweek 33 so are still not inspiring huge confidence in their defence.

For that reason, Christian Eriksen (£9.2m), Dele Alli (£8.8m) and Son Heung-min (£8.5m) may all receive some consideration too.

The only thing that might put managers off a Spurs option outside the largely undroppable Kane, is the fact that Mauricio Pochettino may have to factor in some rotation to Double Gameweek 34 with big Champions League matches against Manchester City either side of it.

That competition is why very few of Pep Guardiola’s charges will be strongly considered this week, as they prepare for a trip to Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Chelsea go head-to-head at Anfield, which should reduce any interest in the likes of Mohamed Salah (£13.2m), Sadio Mané (£10.1m) or Eden Hazard (£11.1m).

Fresh from a 16-point haul against Huddersfield in Blank Gameweek 33, Jamie Vardy (£9.2m) may once again receive some attention as a differential captain as Leicester host Newcastle.

I can see the logic in it to a degree. Only thing is, Brighton have only kept 6 clean sheets all season.

The Cardiff game is going to be a huge game as they really need to win all of their games. They will not sit back.
Probably more likely to get a clean sheet against Bournemouth but even then, as bad as Bournemouth were last game (and they really were terrible - I put myself through that game for some unknown reason) you would expect them to want to restore a bit of pride and drag their heels off the beach for at least one game.

He could easily get 2 points in both games. I think people tend to rule out of teams scrapping to avoid relegation and think each game is the same, regardless of context.

I'd be more prepared to captain Salah/Mane/Vardy on the basis that those guys are more likely to make their own points than Duffy is. By quite some way.

I am amazed by how many people - on here, no less - get swept up and carried by DGWs.

They're not extra games - each player will have the opportunity to play 38 games in one season. The only way it makes any difference is if you're going to captain a DGW player you think will haul.

And there's a reduced likelihood of all the best players playing both games due to fixture congestion, fatigue, other commitments and individual consistency over a short period of time.

For that reason I'm probably only looking at bringing Jimenez in for Wolves' DGW 35 due to fixtures and the fact they're out the Cup and will want to finish as high as possible. Even though Jota has two games and likely to play both, I'd still there are loads of SGW midfielders who are more likely to outscore him, too.

            Good point mate.

I'm keeping 3 Liverpool in my WC team.
Will save FT next gw so that i can wipe out some bench if needed in gw 36.

Selling Vardy is a risk this gw that i have taken. Hopefully don't get punished

I think Salah is going to go on a run, starting tonight and carrying on when Liverpool play Chelsea.

Salah hasn't scored many times against the bigger teams he's come up against and now he's got the monkey off his back - that, wasn't scoring in 8/9 games - he's going to want to sort that out.

In more recent videos of him you get this impression he's a bit frustrated by how he's been overlooked this season even though he's pretty much level-pegging with Aguero for top scorer.

I can see Liverpool winning every game between now and end of season in the league, and if so, there's a huge likelihood Salah will be involved.

I'm going Robbo, Mane and Salah. As much as I'm tempted by Firmino, I just cant justify taking out Mane. He's just far too good.

I probably can't justify shipping Vardy this GW unless it's for Kane but I don't think I'll have the funds to do that as I'm bringing in Salah and have Sterling, too.

The game tonight is gonna be a huge decider for me tbh, I'm very open minded right now as to which of those 3 I get in. My current draft is Mane and TAA with Lacazette, switching to Firmino after gw 35 but I've made another Salah draft that doesn't include Bobby, if Salah looks like he's got a point to prove tonight I might have to go for him.

            2. JohnnyMagrinho
              7 years, 4 months ago

Oh, I could bring in Kane but I'd need to take a -12 point hit and do:

              Fabianski to Ryan
Trent to Dunk/Coady (someone else 4.4/5m)
              Fraser to Salah
              Vardy to Kane

Not sure that's worth a 12 point hit. Though saying that, Kane could haul massively and cover the entire damage.

              It's one to think about.

                2. JohnnyMagrinho
                  7 years, 4 months ago

I've been taking some hits lately that have paid off.

My thinking would be likely scores below:

                  Fabianski GW34 (2) GW35 (2) - Ryan DGW34 (4+) DGW35 (4+)
Even if Ryan just gets 2 points per game, that -4 hit is negated over the course of the two GWs.
Obviously anything can happen, but it's likely this is what will happen, barring anything ridiculous like a penalty save/red card/own goal etc...

Trent may not play both GWs now that Gomez is nearing inclusion in the first team, Milner being able to cover and CL commitments. Also, I'd say there's a high chance Chelsea will score against Liverpool based on recent results. Dunk/Duffy could potentially get one CS but at the very least you'd expect 4 points for either from this DGW. Even if Trent gets an appearance but blanks, that's only a couple of points lost. Trent may well score/assist but I'd be liking Dunk/Duffy chances of equalling his score for this GW. (We can say this is my FT).

I can see Salah outscoring Fraser by a huge margin this GW.

Vardy and Kane is the one I'm not too happy with. Kane has the potential to score 4 goals every time he plays, but he rarely does as well as he should. Vardy is good, steady player against a team that has nothing to play for. The main draw for this move is that you go into the DGW with Kane for those fixtures along with his potential haul against Huddersfield. Whether or not that's worth a 4 point hit remains to be seen.

I always look at a hit in regards to the upcoming GWs not just the one it immediately affects, and separate each hit for their merits, combined with money in the bank and the opportunities it gives me to make a better team. That way it's more like 3 hits of -4 for 4 transfers to set me up going forward as I don't have any chips left.

best 7.7 mid to finish the WC team? Is Ramsey my man?

    Ederson Gunn
    Laporte TAA Robbo Trippier Duffy
    JWP Sterling Eriksen Doucore XXXX
    Kane Jimmy Deeney

Will be getting in Salah after the double but will require one hit to do so, unless I go cheap on the mid allowing me to move Eriksen or Sterling to Salah for free.

I have the same question, and I'm finding it hard to ditch Doherty because I like his goal threat for the price I got him for. But I'm not sure that's very good thinking. Dbeck's point is a good one. For 5.1 selling value I could have Kolasinac instead and maybe that's what I should be doing...

This. Since GW8 he has averaged 2.75 points, with no score topping 7 points since 6th October.

He has shown he can bang, and had been great value for those that caught his short purple patch. Despite this, he is certainly not essential or the best value for money at his current price point.

I agree with you. If you have Kane, it's him rather than having 6 Brighton defender games instead of 4. 4 is good enough!

    A) Kane, Sterling, Doucoure (or Delafeu), Ryan
    B) Aguero, Eriksen, Son, Lloris

They are the same money. I'm on A, but if Kun seems fit after tonight, is B stronger? Although I'm not sure who I want to captain in 34 if not Kane (I don't know if I can bring myself to captain a Brighton defender)

Huddersfield are that bad Kane could score 10 goals against them.

Brighton have kept 6 clean sheets all season, are terrible and you'll be relying on a defender who's scored 5 times this season to score at least once in those two games.

Might work, but there's more to suggest Kane is a better pick.

      1. Brosstan
        • 12 Years

Duffy's ppg x 2 is higher than Kane's ppg. Both have favorable fixtures. Kane is likely to have reduced minutes.

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
          7 years, 4 months ago

OK then. Let's all pretend Duffy is the better option than Kane.

          Go for it.

It seems so odd to have Kane for Spurs' easiest game of the season if you're not going to Captain him for it.

Even if Duffy had 3 games this week I'd rather captain Kane.

Can't see him not playing either - Kane always plays if he's fit.

You're the one asking for help with this decision.

I'm putting to you the fact that it seems bizarre to say Duffy is a better Fantasy option than Kane. Where are you getting this from? You can't compare a defender who's scored a few goals to one of the best attackers in the country. Especially in the context of this GW coming up.

It's skewing facts to make them look like something they're not. It's utter tosh.

And yes, it's odd to have one of the most expensive players on the game for an easy fixture if you're not going to captain him just because you're blinded by a DGW.

I wouldn't bother posting if you can't handle the fact you might suffer some contradiction to your flawed arguments.

              Nice passive aggressive reply.

A lot of people on here don't want advice, they just want to be told they're right and everything will be OK so they can justify how many mistakes they make. You see it all the time how people moan half way through games and at the end of GWs about how so many people misled them etc...

Duffy might pan out, it might work, but there's more than enough reasonable evidence to suggest Kane is the better option.

Saying he's a better choice because of his PPG is poor argument to make and you must surely, surely know that.

we make a big thing out of the Spurs - Hudd fixture but this is sandwiched into two UCL rounds in which kane will play 2x90 for sure.
Poch has not stared Son in the last two games against City. Looks like he prefers to re-inforce his midfield against Pep's side.

I actually think Son might get a reduced game time during the two UCL rounds which leads me to think that Son might actually be a better option than Kane until GW36..
