Manchester City 2-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), Kyle Walker (£5.9m) | James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Walker, Angelino (£4.7m) | Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Walker x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Angelino x 1

Manchester City left it late to secure all three points against Southampton at the Etihad, with the Citizens’ premium assets delivering mixed fortunes yet again for Fantasy managers who had backed them to haul big against Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

The most captained player of Gameweek 11, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), failed to register any attacking returns, with his owners’ misery compounded when the England winger registered his first “one-pointer” of the campaign after picking up a yellow card late in the first half.

Sterling’s midfield counterpart, Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), was also unable to deliver against the Saints, with the Belgian blanking for the second time in his last three outings.

In truth, neither player looked like scoring, with the Belgian’s 79th-minute effort from an indirect free-kick inside the Southampton box about as close as either player came to finding the back of the net.

Yet whilst Sterling and De Bruyne’s returns were a source of disappointment for their owners, a goal for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) will have understandably provided belated joy to the Argentinian’s remaining backers – his ninth of the season and a first in the league since the 8-0 demolition of Watford in Gameweek 6.

Although Guardiola had opted to rotate Aguero at the expense of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in Gameweeks 9 and 10, with the Brazilian forward making his first consecutive league starts for the first time since December 2018, the Spaniard opted to return the £12.1m striker to the starting XI.

Aguero’s equalising goal was just-rewards for those who had maintained faith in the striker, although there remain real concerns over his risk of rotation and this may well have been his swansong in many FPL squads with some unfavourable fixtures ahead.

The City boss spoke after the game regarding his half-time team talk and the response from his squad that delighted him:

I told them at half-time to keep going for it, to keep attacking. It is the only way. There was no space, it was almost impossible but we did it and that is why I am delighted.

City’s defensive selections continue to perplex Fantasy managers, with Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) – who were both rested in the EFL Cup in midweek – only among the substitutes for this rematch against the Saints.

Guardiola instead opted to select Angelino (£4.7m), John Stones (£5.3m), Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) on Saturday, with Walker stealing the show at the Etihad with a goal, an assist and three bonus points: his first double-digit haul of the 2019/20 campaign

Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) did not feature in the starting XI and, much to the frustration of the Argentinian’s 5% of owners, Guardiola opted to bring on the centre-back in injury time for a one-minute cameo – a particularly disappointing situation for those managers who may have had the likes of 21-point hero John Lundstram (£4.7m) on their benches.

City were not at their best against Southampton, who frustrated Pep Guardiola’s side throughout the fixture and went ahead when James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m) found the back of the net after 12 minutes – Ederson (£6.1m) spilling a shot from Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) at the midfielder’s feet.

After being humbled in a 9-0 defeat against Leicester City in Gameweek 10, two games against City in a week – in the Carabao Cup and the Premier League – would have seemed a daunting prospect for the south coast side.

Hasenhüttl spoke after the game regarding his side’s task in visiting the Etihad twice in just a week, saying:

To come here twice after losing 9-0 is not the easiest moment for a team but I think it was a chance to show up today, and we did, and it was really a pity that we didn’t get something for the amazing work we did today.

Although neither of the games resulted in a victory for Southampton, their performances, particularly in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, can be seen as a source of credit to Hasenhüttl and his staff.

Some favourable fixtures await the Saints between now and Gameweek 18 but many of us are likely going to need to see a lot more improvement before their assets re-enter the Fantasy radar.

Southampton XI (4-5-1): McCarthy, Valery (Danso 75′), Bednarek (Adams 88′), Stephens, Vestergaard, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Armstrong, Ings (Djenepo 84′), Redmond.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Angelino, Gundogan, Silva (Jesus 45′), De Bruyne, Bernardo (Foden 84′) Sterling, Aguero (Otamendi 90+2′).

Guys, what is everyone’s thoughts on Martial?

Tempted to bring him in for the next 3, nice fixtures. Playing up front. Or do I go Maddison...

What is his ownership? Maddison sits on around 15% so it's still differential-ish ... Lei play much better than Utd at the minute.

Wasn't a malicious challenge. Gomes foot sticking in the ground was bad luck. See Taylor v Coleman for a malicious challenge. Son didn't intend to injure Gomes

Mane will be 12 or 12.1 by the end of this week, and if he scores against City, he will be catching Salah in the intl break when his smooth fixtures begin.

Schneiderlin could be decent bench fodder and a 0.2 saving on Cantwell?

I can do the following for -4 and exact cash:

Sterling, Firmino, Cantwell > Mane, Auba, Schneiderlin

How many City-Liverpool assets do you own? Are you planning to bench anyone or sell anyone for Non-Liverpool assets this week?

I have Mane KDB Sterling TAA, and will probably play all of them barring any injuries. Sterling to Son was in my thoughts but after today's match I wouldn't get Son even if the red card was rescinded.

I have cleared out my city assets. I know they're high scoring but

      1. I don't like their upcoming run
      2. We hit Christmas shortly after and I want assets a bit more assured of a start
      3. I fancy the next game to be 0-0
      4. Not liking the look of KdB right now with Rodders out, so freeing up profit
      5. So, err, yeah. I'll be reclined, feet in the air at 61 minutes to KO laughing at everyone over the next few weeks (and holding my head in my hands about 3 minutes after KO no doubt)

Will be on a wild card over the international break. Got the team I want...but it’s a mere 4.3 over budget hah. Where should I cut?!

    Pope / Heaton

TAA, Söyüncü, 3 Way rotation: Lundstram, Rico, Cahill

    Sterling, Mane, Maddison, Mount, (Dendonker)

    Abraham, Aubameyang, Vardy

I think I could cut sterling down to de Bruyne. Would still need 2m more. Got to be either Aubameyang or Abraham, right?

Radical mini-WC. Freeing up KdB profit, avoiding VvD drop and reinvesting for plum fixtures

VdV, KdB, (Connoly) ---> TAA, Vardy (Cantwell)

Hovering over Dilva ---> Martial too

Trent Alexander-Arnold still much more attacking, would still be my pick

Well Robbo is 0.3 cheaper and there's basically nothing to choose between them. TAA is a love in but Robbo is there finding the points

I'm gonna ask a pretty weird question but to me it makes perfect sense to the transfer I may be making.

Would you prefer a non playing defender (3.9) or a non playing forward (Greenwood)...

Having the 3.9defender would allow having Connolly as the 3rd benchfodder striker in a 352 formation..

Hope ye get what I'm trying to say.

      Non playing forward.

But I'm a bit biased because my fodders have become staples - Rico and Lundstram.

in a few weeks Connolly will be getting similar minutes to Greenwood - ie bench cameos for 10 mins.
"Having the 3.9defender would allow having Connolly as the 3rd benchfodder striker in a 352 formation.."
In this case you will soon have 2 non playing benchers
Take Greenwood - and a cheap playing defender

The fact you have to play three defenders means a non-playing defender is more likely to cause you a problem in terms of not fielding an 11. Plus Greenwood actually clocks 1 pointers frequently.

Thanks for the feedback, I guess you are right, a 3.9 keeper would be ideal

    A) Sterling to Mane (double with Salah)
    B) Salah to Mane (sterling/mane the heavy hitters)
    C) Kdb to Mane (-8) (Gives me Sterling/Salah/Mane)
    D) Forget Mane

The 4 ycs are playing on my mind as well.. seen so many other similar challenges that were ignored, but Raz gets booked for his!

I definitely think that Salah and Mane double up is the way forward. Nailed on, and they are playing in a quality side. Just make sure you have a good bench replacement for when they have their blank gameweek!

    My midfield for next GW:
    Salah,Mane,KDB,Dilva,Mount

Shall I take Dilva out, and who should replace him?

wait for injury news - if its hammy and out for a while, i would be tempted to move, maybe for either Tielemans, or Martial

Seeing Otamendis one point is making me really angry with Soy smiling from first on bench... would have gave me a really nice score, than just an average one(61)

I might take a hit to remove CHO if he starts in the CL. But the recent discussion about overall points and OR makes me realize how painful a hit really is. 4 points is almost 100k rank difference from 800-700k 😮

So your saying my potential -8 is a bad idea!
Prob wont do it, but I have only took one -4 all year so far.

    2. AndyCook
      6 years, 8 months ago

It’s not just 4 points to have a player early though, people forget its 4 points to be a transfer ahead for the rest of the season.

      1. AndyCook
        6 years, 8 months ago

Or get rid of a player early on your case

But theres no hurry to remove him unless I cant field anyone else.

That only applies if its a season keeper. In reality people who do hits will end up taking many hits to move players in and out for short stretches.
