The arrival of Nathan Aké (£5.5m) at Manchester City could improve the club’s defensive prospects in 2020/21.

Pep Guardiola’s men were missing consistency and strength in depth at centre-back last season but Aké can be stabling influence this time around.

We have assessed the former Bournemouth defender’s credentials ahead of the new campaign, what impact he will have on the City defence and whether or not that can make him a viable Fantasy Premier League asset.

As we have used Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access this article in full.

What defensive contributions did Aké make last season?

Aurier good pick? And why steer over nyland?

    Vingare starting for wolves?

Aurier likely to move, Steer was first choice when Heaton first injured and then got injured himself, Villa fans seem pretty sure Steer will start ( if no other signing) and Vinagre a bit of a doubt to guarantee start now with Wolves considering getting AMN from Arsenal.

I have both but absolutely certain of having Ings in week 1.
Good fixtures, bonus points whenever he scores, coming off the back of just missing out on the golden Boot.

Werner because there's scope for a 25-30 goal all out Salah 17-18 season

Ings has only had one stellar season and although there's the saying "better the devil you know" in this instance it boils down to we know what Ings is capable of, but Werner's mysterious upside could be mega

Chelsea signing Thiago Silva is really strange. Surely the pace of the PL is going to be too much for his legs? 35 now. Can't see him fixing anything for them.

He was the best defender in the world 5 years ago. I think a few yards of pace can't hurt that much when he has elite positioning and tactical intelligence.

That’s not a given. I read today that his pace hasn’t dropped, and that the latest data shows Milner’s pace (and ability to maintain frequency of sprints) to be the same at 34 that it was when he was 22. A lot of 100m sprinters excel in their mid-30s. And even if he has lost a yard of pace, he’s probably as fast as Chelsea’s other options in central defence (and twice as fast as peak John Terry!)

I'm feeling more and more secure about my team. Getting excited to see what the new season has in store.

    McCarthy Steer
    TAA Doherty Dier Saliba Ferguson
    Salah Fernandes Son Ziyech Soucek
    Werner Mitrovic Wickham

No Auba is scary but I think Fernandes is a more important pick up and that 1.5m difference will not be felt in points at the end of the season. Tipping Bruno for a 220+ season.

    1. Snevitz
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yeah Bruno looks great value if he carries on playing like he was last season.
Have you considered downgrading Dier and rotating 3 x £4.5m defenders and Soucek for your final two starting slots?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I can't see meaningful Soucek upgrades. I want him for his goal scoring potential. He's a value 5th mid who I can rotate with Saliba/Dier/Ferguson.

Can see the thinking on Bruno over Auba, just tinkered with that myself. He helps being a die hard Salah fan as you just stick with him, no matter the enticing alternatives

Looks great- only concern is Salah who looked very off form- hopefully can turn it on in Charity Shield. Ferguson not on bench today as some issue over price so best keep eye on that. Mitchell game off bench and might be more secure option while PVA out.

Love the team, I have similar. I chose Alli over Son, which allowed an upgrade up front. I think Alli will emerge, due to playing right behind Kane, as a points machine. I love Son, just think Alli’s time is now.

Nothing too out the ordinary here but thought I'd post my team.

    McCarthy, 4m
    TAA, Doherty, Vinagre, KWP, 4m
    Salah, Auba, Greenwood, Soucek, 4.5m
    Werner, Ings, Mitrovic

    Tentative plan is
    Gw2: Salah to Fernandes
    Gw3: Auba to KDB
    Gw4: 4m to Laporte

Tried to fit in as many undervalued players as possible and the team in week 4 is what I wanted before the fixtures were released and I realised I had no midfield!

If you're looking for undervalued players, you have missed Son who has become one of my favorite choices to start the season with.

He has elite PPG, nailed on, good fixtures. And his price is ridiculous at 9.0m. Last season, he rose to nearly 10m and people still bought him. This year, second season Mourinho, with a full pre season and favorable fixtures, it's a ridiculously easy pick up imo.

I'm a firm believer that whichever team is jetting off around Europe midweek will underperformed in the league.
It ruined my triple Stoke defence one season and my triple Burnley defence in another so despite him looking good value I'm going to pass at the moment... Its absolutely nothing to do with him getting me a negative captaincy score last season.

I think he will be the least value out of Fernandes, Greenwood, Martial and himself as he won't have penalties anymore and Fernandes has stolen a lot of free kicks from him.

Any defenders nailed (and not injured) on Newcastle or Palace?

I’m looking at rotating 2 cheap defenders and they seem to have the best fixtures.

I think you may be putting too much emphasis on fixtures and not enough emphasis on how good the respective teams' defenses are.

Both tend to play much better at home and against bottom teams. 11 cs at home vs bottom 12 teams between the two of them

Nearly 50% success rate is impressive, good research.
I stand corrected although I think both teams may struggle this season.

I liked the look of Davis at moments last season - hope he does get a chance. Talk of a loan spell elsewhere though

keep coming back to this same question:
    A) Ings + ASM
    B) Jimenez + Armstrong

      A

It should boil down to whether you think Ings is better than Jimenez and ASM better than Armstrong. Don't be afraid to go double Southampton or no Southampton, depending on the answer to those questions.

Am currently on the defensive strategy of Trent + 3 4.5s and a 4.0. Which three 4.5s do you think are best for rotation pairings? Hope this makes sense!

Lascelled, Palace def and KWP or Lamptey depending on who you have in goal.

Any Chelsea player owners not worried about game time? They're well on their way to signing a new XI, on top of the one which finished 4th last season.

For instance with Werner. Surely Frank won't just put as promising a player as Tammy on the bench all season. And Giroud was pretty much as in form as any other striker after the return. He's reluctant to play two up front, so surely there's rotation madness there?

Giroud 33 now he will be phased out and used for cup games.

      Front is Wener and Tammy.

Has anyone else noticed that the season ticker data has Southampton rated as tougher on the road than they are at home? That's very much an anomaly. Does anyone think that might be a mistake (a typo in the FPL office for instance), or does the data indeed bear out that SOU is easier to play against at St Mary's -- for both attackers and defenders, apparently?

Last year, Southampton got 21 points at home with a goal difference of -14. Only Norwich were worse.

They were third on away form, behind only Liverpool and City. 31 points and a goal difference of +5.

Wow, interesting. And thanks for providing the data to back it up. In 4 years of looking at the Team data from the FPL API, I've never seen another example of this. Will be interesting to see if that continues this year.

I don't know, my gut feeling is that it was an anomaly - they were better at home in 18/19. Time will tell I guess.

Maupay's 10 goals last season is impressive for a debut campaign. Surely he'll improve on that tally this year. I reckon Adams will do well also so It's a tough call

    McCarthy

    TAA, KWP, Egan, Vinagre

    Salah,Auba, Son

    Mitro, Ings, Werner

    (Button,Douglas, Stephens, McCathy)

Can't go with any of these 5-5.5 midfielders they all seem pish so swapped to go with Egan and Mitro instead.

This is extremely similar to my current team. Ive got Ziyech, ASM and Dallas instead of Son, Douglas and McCarthy but rest is identical

You should swap Dallas to Douglas.

Ziyech is a bit of a risk, Werner scored 28 goals I think he's a better pick.

      No, I don't think so.
Which is a pity because if he was I'd probably take him over Soucek & ASM.

Heard someone here say he could be part of a swap for Callum Wilson which would make sense
