Many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) plans were thrown into disarray on Wednesday evening when Aston Villa announced the surprise signing of Southampton forward Danny Ings (£8.0m).

It was something of a throwback to how transfer business used to get done, with no news or rumours reported by a single journalist.

With all eyes on Jack Grealish’s (£8.0m) imminent departure to Manchester City, the Villans threw us a curveball by confirming the capture of Ings for a fee believed to be an initial £25m plus add-ons.

The 29-year-old forward joins summer recruits Leon Bailey (£6.5m), Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m) and Ashley Young (£5.0m) at Villa Park.

Villa head coach Dean Smith said of Ings’ capture:

“Danny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored goals wherever he has played. He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team. I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great Club.”

Ings’ move to B6 is a significant one for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers that may well have ramifications for Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) too, which we’ll explore in our latest Moving Target report below.

INGS’ PROFILE AND STATS

SouBur Sunday

First and foremost, Ings is a proven goalscorer.

In fact, only Harry Kane (£12.5m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) have scored more across the last two Premier League seasons.

During that time, he has overperformed his expected goal (xG) totals in both campaigns, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 21.1% in 2020/21.

However, he also offers more to the team in his all-round game.

He will often pull out wide or drop deeper in an attempt to pick out runners with a pass, which could be good news for the likes of Bailey and Watkins.

Above: Danny Ings 2020/21 touch heat map

Injuries were a problem for Ings in the past, but he has only missed 11 Premier League games across the last two seasons.

INGS’ PREMIER LEAGUE RECORD:

SeasonClub    Appearances   Goals   Assists
2014/15Burnley35 (0)114
2015/16Liverpool6 (3)20
2016/17Liverpool0 (0)00

WHERE DOES INGS FIT IN AT VILLA AND WHAT DOES HIS ARRIVAL MEAN FOR WATKINS?

Abit of a strange one if rumours are true, because he definitely wont be first choice in either full back role as things stand (unless ofc, it means Aarons is leaving)

Not sure if United are happy for him to fight for his spot somewhere and settle for the £2m loan fee? Does seem the case as they were willing to loan him to Saints where he wouldnt have been first choice either

Yeah might be for the money. He’s a good defender but doesn’t offer much of an attacking threat for a full back.

Am I too mistaken in keeping Watkins? I think first fixtures make it worth the gamble, and it's an easy swap if he disappoints too much. Besides, Antonio's fitness and Iheanacho's minutes are a concern for me as well.

(I *could* go down the good old Chris Wood road...)

Why is everyone assuming Ings plays straight away? The only AVL player I'll go near (without further information from Dean Smith himself) is Buendia, and even then I probably won't get him.

Ings is a better player than Watkins. If he starts up front in their last pre-season match, you could assume he'll play straight away.

"Ings is a better player than Watkins." Debatable. He's maybe a better finisher, but Watkins is the better technical footballer. Can't say I'm the biggest Danny Ings fan though...

I'm not going to lie, I didn't realise Ings was this popular. For me, they're in very similar positions, but Watkins then has 4 years on Ings.

Ings is a clinical finisher. Watkins isn't. Ings was at a poor Saints team last season so wasn't particularly popular. Now he gets to put away chances created by Buendia, Bailey and Watkins - and potentially Grealish lookylikey Cantwell.

I definitely want Ings, but I don't know if he starts GW1 or will have gelled with his teammates. I'll play it safe by starting a pair of 7.5 strikers and keep 0.5 itb to pounce on Ings if he does start and is on fire.

How can you be a better footballer when you spend 4/5ths of the season in the stands?
Technically, Danny Ings is great at being injured.

I'm well aware that I am spouting rubbish to defend a mistake but would you rather:
Danny Ings - 29 yrs old - 12 goals and 4 assists - played 2/3 of the season
Ollie Watkins - 25 yrs old - 14 goals and 9 assists - played the whole season

Considering Ings was supposed to be the talisman at Southampton, and Watkins was playing behind Grealish, I think Watkins's record is much better.

And before you say Southampton are the worse team. They are both mid table clubs (AVL-11th, SOU-15th).

            1. Bushwhacker

I was with you until the Grealish logic . . . Watkins had a) a freak night against Liverpool, b) far, far, far better service than Ings.

I meant that Grealish was the talisman, not Watkins, so Watkins maybe exceeded expectations whilst Ings didn't quite live up to them. (Just one way of looking at it)

Watkins might've had better service, but not by that much:
Watkins had an attempt every 34.3 mins
Ings had an attempt every 38.3 mins

Watkins has many positives over Ings. He is a stronger runner, better fitness, more robust, more reliable in terms of availability.

The point is that you have to be clueless to think he is a better technical footballer than Ings.

So if I changed the word "technical" to "my preferred option/the better modern player/athlete" (which was what I kind of meant) none of this would've happened?

Also, I don't care how good at football you are if you're injured the whole time. If Lionel Messi has a broken leg, I am better at football than him because I can actually run and aren't on crutches so can kick the football.

So if Ings spends half his career injured, he has to do a hell of a lot to be a better option than someone like Watkins, who you can guarantee will get you 13+ goals a season and be consistently available.

Finally, I think a lot of this (let's call it a) debate, has been caused by me rating Watkins so much, rather than disregarding the talent of Ings.

"Half his career" - why are you banging on about this nonsense. The article says he missed 11 games in 2 seasons.

Yes but his career has been 7 seasons, not 2. In his 2nd 3rd and 4th season he played a grand total of 602 minutes, a massive proportion of that through injury. In his 5th he played about half the games.

Half his career was a guess, a hyperbole, an exaggeration, but you can't deny he spends more time injured than most.

I am confident he starts and there is such a wealth of service there for him (Buendia, Bailey, Watkins, McGinn, Targett). More concerning for me is his injury record, but therein reinforces the need to seize the opportunity start him from the off and make hay....until that inevitable injury hits.

Reinforces my faith in Bailey as my Villa midfield pick. Will likely play a similar role to Watkins on the other side and could be on set pieces (going by some of the Leverkusen footage that I've seen). 1m less than Watkins and likely to play a more advanced role than Buendia - I like the look of him.

Stronger. Opponents can't just double-mark a talisman out of the game. Ings in a better team will be a great asset, and Buendia and Bailey will create chances that will be put away. But not GW1. It's too soon. I'll look to bring Ings and maybe one other on my WC.

Heatmaps are possibly the most ineffective form of graphical display of stats in my experience of using KPIs and stats in business, so I'm unsure how they managed to work their way onto this site. I find they don't add any value in my analysis but I guess everyone learns and interprets things differently and they have a place.

I put them in simply to illustrate Ings' tendency to drop a bit deeper and bring others into play, and with Watkins, the fact that he often drifts to the left even as a centre-forward. Nothing more than a movement thing, really.

Besides Buendia, Toney and Raphinha, is there any 7.0 or below attacker who's even any good?

Barnes - not nailed, back from injury?
    Maddison - not nailed, regressing?
    ESR - not nailed?
Wood - back from olympics, low scoring team
Maupay - low scoring team, got competition
    Welbeck - Welbeck
    Pukki - bad fixtures
Bowen - inconsistent, not nailed, also think Wham will regress
Zaha - not going there again
Harrison - not doubling on Leeds mids

I think the opposite for him actually. Getting settled into the league. Leeds a high scoring team.

After re-jigging my squad I had a spare 5th mid slot and 7m to spend. Don't want Villa GW1 until they're settled and others as you say are not definitely nailed. You missed Saka from that list but I got to the end and figured Harrison - even though I've got Raph is the best option.

I think there could be some merit to a Leeds double up. Probably not initially but the stats for both of them are solid.

Yup. Harrison is being ignored because of Raphinha. But it could simply be a case of picking both and running away with points

Newcastle's Willock, then Benrahma, then Sarr

All with obvious caveats too, but Willock is an autopick for me if he does move

      Also, err, Soucek? Unsexy 🙂

Harrison might just outscore all of 'em again anyway

I've got time for Barnes / Maddy / ESR / Zaha / Harrison. Think we know what Wood is by now (he's fine) but not intrigued by the others.

      Best 7m = Barnes
Best 6.5m = Buendia or Raph

      Best 5.5m = ESR

Staring down the barrel of a 3-5-2 (one of many drafts) with nailed players but no bench. I definitely did not see myself getting here...

    Bachmann | Foster
TAA Digne Veltman | Bardsley Livra
    Salah Bruno Son Buendía Raph
    Antonio Toney | Oba

I know the risks (Covid, injuries, random rests, no 4.0 emerges, etc), but it's smokin'. At least for the first 6 GWs

This was essentially my holding draft a week back.

Found the 0.5 by downgrading Buendia/Raph to Benrahma. Treating that spot as a likely transfer position early on.

    Hello all,

    Rate my punty team?

    Henderson (Covid dependent)

    TAA, Tierny, Stones Veltman Ayling

    Sancho Foden Havertz Jota Raphinha

    Auba Antonio Toney

Allows for Auba + Foden -> Kane + ESR if that move happens.

Villa players looked primed with the opening 3 fixtures but the departure of Grealish concerns me much more.

As a talisman of Villa, who does the formation effect Villa as a whole and individual players? With Grealish, 14 wins in 25 at 56%, without Grealish 4 wins in 17 at just 24% (all competitions).

As mentioned in the article, they have a friendly on Saturday. Watch that space. I think what I'm doing is starting with a pair of 7.5 strikers with 0.5 itb to move quickly onto Ings if he does start GW1 and looks sharp.
