So, we’re now one Gameweek into the new season and it couldn’t have gone much better with a schedule packed full of goals – 34 of them in all, to be precise.

That in turn led to some huge Fantasy Premier League (FPL) scores, but as focus now shifts to Gameweek 2, here are some observations from the opening weekend that I found interesting and my transfer/team plans for the weekend.

KINGS OF THE CROSSES

Everton took to the wings against Southampton on Saturday afternoon, sending in crosses from all angles.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m) and Andros Townsend (£5.5m) supplied most of them, with the aim of getting the ball into the box as quickly as possible in an attempt to capitalise on Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£8.0m) power in the air.

Everton’s final-third passes (successful in green) v Southampton

Calvert-Lewin’s total of five shots in the box (including three headers) wasn’t beaten by any other forward in Gameweek 1, which bodes well for his prospects ahead of a kind run of fixtures against Leeds United (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (a), Burnley (h), Aston Villa (a) and Norwich City (h).

So Robertson back in full training already. Do we think Tsimikas gets Burnley with Robertson back in for Chelsea?

Tsim surely will get Burnley not worth risking Robbo on an easy W

I was watching Planet FPL there they were discussing bargain defenders.
The fella James on PFPL made good points on Hoever and Livermramento.

In all fairness - another start, another CS and another price rise is all us owners need and wish for.
          Would bench against Chelsea anyway.

Can't argue with Schmeichel looks fantastic real composed classy keeper. I got Sanchez and Schmeichel on a BB as both rotate brilliantly.
I am hoping that extra 1m gains me a few points over a the long number of fixtures. Tempted to keep both on WC it looks so good on paper.

Naa, not bothering. Team is set up nicely. Was pondering Barnes > Gundo but obvs not now. My thinking is if I’m swerving against Norwich then I’m likely swerving most of the season unless they get 2/3injuries

1 ft in, 1ft out. Cancelo would have been a possibility, but not certain that he plays. I think I prefer Stones, but fear that Ake gets Norwich game before being dropped. And Laporte is still there imo. KdB is too expensive and Mahrez and Torres didn't look too good. Can't see anyone worth getting in now.

Mahrez wasn't getting any service. I have Mahrez so I am biased and I will keep until IB, as I planned, unless he doesn't return points this week in which case I will consider transferring him out and saving 2 FTs for the IB

I am starting to think I could survive the season without any Man City players.
The other City - leicester look superb. Then there are the Villa, Hammers, Chelsea, Spurs and Wolves options. Throw in the cheap promoted teams. Why bother with Man City?
Only reason I would get any City player is if Kane/Ronaldo signs for them. Or if there is a Man City injury crisis so we know for definite who will get a run of games.

Amazing analysis after one match. At some point city will start spanking teams and every one will fear not having them, it’s always the same. To base your strategy for an entire season after one week is strange.

It is not after one season is after MANY seasons of watching Pep's Man City. Since he has no main striker and changes teams at the drop of hat who do you pick. OK you say KDB but he seemed to be be playing in a provider type role?
He seemed a bit iffy last season by his usual standards.
I had Sterling last season and he was fairly useless for more of it and I think I suffered a few price drops.

Looks right I would say as is.
Lukaku has to settle in has really tough fixtures - probably a lot of tight games - except Arsenal they could hammer them. But Lukaku may not start
Kane sure he might be 12m by the time his future is decided and he is match fit.

I'm a spurs season ticket holder. Japhet's had a few good performances against "big" opposition. Not much attacking threat but he sure can defend. Certainly compared to aurier.

He was looking likely to be loaned out but he had a stonking preseason game against arsenal too. Still expect aurier to go and another rb to sign.

i think tanganga could either play rcb in a 5 with Doherty rwb, or simply drop out for Doherty when nuno wants a more attacking option.

He is playing lopsided fullbacks at the minute with reguilon high up the pitch and tanganga staying back. Doherty not suited to that.

I use FPLStatistics for accuracy of risers or fallers, and FFFix to give me an insight into the rate at which a player is rising or falling.

Would never trust FFFix for their risers or fallers as FPLStatistics has always outdone them on that score imo...

Think Barnes is always vulnerable to early subs and even benchings, there might also be an element of caution after such a bad injury, main reason I steered clear in the end.

That is something we can only guess. Even if Liverpool or Klopp has habit of downplaying injuries, this could easily have been degree one and it is 2-3 weeks. For prof football player you can perhaps add some extra time to be on safe side. Only time will tell.

If he is running then it seems all he did was twist his ankle like we all have done at times playing footy. No real damage so heals quickly and in which case may well be back for the weekend?

Yea, but he can't risk to twist it again before it has properly healed or it may get much worse. So I wouldn't I expect him to play yet.

What people are failing to understand imo is that running is totally different from e.g. lateral movement.

Don't take my word for it, here's a doctor's view:

Depends how bad the sprain was … that doctor was guessing so it could be 2 weeks, 2.5 weeks, 3 weeks. We have seen Kane come back a lot earlier than expected after a twisted ankle for example

I wouldn’t bank on him playing but it is a real possibility.

Sellers being a bit harsh on Pepe. If they brought him in from the off, knowing his next two fixtures, why blow a free transfer now?

7.5 (7.4) is much in a player you'd want to bench for the next two GW's.
ESR is easier to just bench. Might end up selling him, but if he does not look like dropping before Norwich, then he will just sit on my bench and w8 for his chance to shine (hopefully) 😀

      I'd be looking further ahead.
Which player would you want to bring in when it is GW3 or GW4, and do you need some cash to fund that move.
Let's say you have Ings, and you want Lukaku from GW4 (fits losing Ings before GW4).
That's still 3.5 from Ings -> Lukaku. Where would you get that cash? Downgrade a player before GW3 to use your transfer and get yourself some cash for the future move.

But let's see how you feel when GW2 is done and dusted 😉

I thought this. Looking at the previous stats of Bruno vs Southampton compared to Salah vs Burnley I would have thought Bruno would be the favourite. It's a tough choice either way.

I agree. Seems odd. Southampton just lost Vestergaard and shipped 3 against a weak preseason Everton.
Surely one would think that United will match Everton or do even better.
Also Burnley can frustrate any top team except City for 85 minutes.

I guess there is the benching risk for Jota, but I think him starting worked last match so he'll do it again. He has an easier fixture than Benrahma too. Both have a good chance of returns. Benrahma safer for minutes.

    3. RogDog_jimmy
      • 5 Years

I understand the urge to move Jota - I have it too.

I keep telling myself that 30 minutes off the bench of Jota, at home, against a tiring Burnley is still very good. And that's worst case.
There's a reasonable chance that all 4 attackers play given the weak midfield options - and Klopp wanting to put on a show for the fans.

(I also already have Benrahma and Greenwood and can't think of who to get in otherwise)

I would advice no, but after having taken casual approach punt and ditching Jota for Pogba, what can I say 😉 I have zero idea which of them is going to start, but I started to fear it could be as likely Firmino. Klopp might do it reward him for playing well and give him chance to build confidence before Che.

If WC this early I wouldn’t personally want to bank in transfers like Tsimikas and arguably Ings. I’d look to spread money I bit more, maybe downgrade AWB or Regullon and spend the extra. Maybe a 5.5-6m mid and move to 442 - any rotation and you’d currently be struggling

VvD to TAA and you can upgrade Tsimikas to 4.5

Yea, Sorry. Get Pereira over VvD in that case and save .5

Not sure I trust Man U for double-up defense.

And I wouldn't worry upgrading Tsimmy with those other 4 defenders - use that money in the midfield at some point...Maybe Ings to a 7.5 and then the 1.5 to get up to a 6.0 midfielder

Son isn't worth the sacrifices made imo. This team shows how expensive he is.

Horsie didn't believe it, but his team was linked. Perhaps "nomen est omen" is correct sometimes.

    Best use of FT?

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Tsimikas Ayling
    Salah Fernandes Greenwood
    Ings Antonio Toney
    ____
    Steele White Brownhill Gilmour

    2.5 itb

    A) Gilmour to Benrahma (no Son for gw3 unless I ship Fernandes)
    B) Gilmour to Ferran Torres (one week punt)
    C) Gwood to Mahrez (one week punt)
    D) Save FT and get Son for gw3 with 2 FT during IB (

A or B allow me to bench Ayling

What would you do with the 2 FT though?

Save and be prepared to use after gw3? And if you need to get Son and sell your injured player after weekend, it saves you 4 pts.
