So, we’re now one Gameweek into the new season and it couldn’t have gone much better with a schedule packed full of goals – 34 of them in all, to be precise.

That in turn led to some huge Fantasy Premier League (FPL) scores, but as focus now shifts to Gameweek 2, here are some observations from the opening weekend that I found interesting and my transfer/team plans for the weekend.

KINGS OF THE CROSSES

Everton took to the wings against Southampton on Saturday afternoon, sending in crosses from all angles.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m) and Andros Townsend (£5.5m) supplied most of them, with the aim of getting the ball into the box as quickly as possible in an attempt to capitalise on Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£8.0m) power in the air.

Everton’s final-third passes (successful in green) v Southampton

Calvert-Lewin’s total of five shots in the box (including three headers) wasn’t beaten by any other forward in Gameweek 1, which bodes well for his prospects ahead of a kind run of fixtures against Leeds United (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (a), Burnley (h), Aston Villa (a) and Norwich City (h).

Dunno if it's been posted but The Times are reporting that Gundogan is not ruled out of the Norwich game yet.

"and has not even been ruled out of #ManCity vs Norwich."

It does seem unlikely. But it's not impossible.

Don't plan to lose 4 points. I used to do that all the time and never got anywhere - on average over the year, it was not paying off. I now only use it in an emergency and finished top 5k last year (best before that was well outside the top 100k)

no idea. thats why we need to wait to find out. 1st few weeks are always a gamble and mainly for us to find out who are the starters etc. Doesnt help with all the transfers and back from break.

when there are so many uncertainty, the best way to get by is to pick the obvious options.

        This. THank you.

I was initially, but now im on 50/50.

not about the money (as ill be WC around GW4), more about Villa looking flaky at the back, especially on the counter (Sarr, and ASM now).

I also dont think Watford are that ruthless away.

Will probably be a last minute decision im still 50/50, that bench boost got me 11 points only and a headache for this week.

      In my opinion it's a 50-50 just like you said,toss a coin,choose 1,hope and pray.
But since Southampton is at home and Burnley will play away,Burnley will have probably 10 men behind the ball which might not be the case with Southampton since they play at home.Southampton's new look defence was nothing short of terrible vs Everton and that's why I'm probably leaning towards bruno.

Here's a little squad I threw together that incorporates lukaku, son, salah and Bruno. It doesn't look too awful imo.

    Sanchez. 4.0
    Shaw. Ayling. White. Veltman. 4.0
    Salah. Son. Bruno. Mbuemo. 4.5
    Dennis. Antonio. Lukaku

Obvious omission is TAA and a 7.5mf slot. But the team retains a defensive rotation option and a playing 4.5 desperation mf.

I don't see much talk of Mbuemo, but if he's going to be as advanced as he was vs arsenal then he's very much an option. Even as a replacement for gundo with a view to moving towards a multi heavy hitter team such as above.

Not that I'm doing it. Just having a mess. What are your thoughts?

Would obviously like to have them all but there are always cheaper alternatives that score as well, especially if you catch them on form and good fixtures. As tempting it is to get Lukaku in, I would wait and see on him. 2-3 premium is enough.

You're not talked about unless you get a return that's just how things are sadly!
Mbuemo was fantastic vs arsenal and if it wasn't for his rash decision making in the final third, probably would've had a return.
Toney and mbuemo both looked great
And this team looks kind of lacks balance
Not sure about Dennis as my 7th attacker with the defence being so light

I accept the pep roulette danger but i think the risk is slight with Torres this week

Go for it if you want, could end up great but guaranteed to start just isn't a thing especially for someone like him. He could start with any of KDB, Jesus or Sterling up top as well as Torres. Commentary acted like Torres was great against Spurs but I thought he was pretty anonymous so I certainly wouldn't be overly confident. Do you at least have bench cover?

I fancy Sancho if Ole makes noises he will start.

I know just owning him is enough, but I just have a gut feeling he’s going to tear Southampton a new one.

Salah( early kick off 🙁 ) would be my obvious other pick.

I mean obviously I hope so but the fact we haven't even bid for him is strange. His brother/agent seems to be putting out vibes of "we are waiting" but West Ham haven't tried.

I wonder if they think Benrahma is the answer (he isn't) and that the limited money would be better served elsewhere.

Planning for Lingard for next week is too much for me personally, heading towards this weekend we're only hearing murmurs about a deal happening and even if he joins next week, he might not play at the weekend. Then West Ham have to look at European games coming up soon after and the impact of that on performance and rotation

This captaincy is doing my head in, honestly.
It probably doesn't really matter in the long run but it'll be so annoying if I miss the haul. Like I didn't really feel much missing Bruno's haul because I had him and never considered anyone but Mo for the armband. This week if I miss it I'll be proper gutted.

Both look good. Southampton conceded 3 big chances and 3 big goals. Bruno has previously hauled against southampton. In his last 3 games vs saints, 2 goals 3 assists. If united carry on their form from Leeds i fully expect Bruno to be in the points.

Salah has a poor(ish) record v Burnley. 1 goal 2 assists in 7! By his standards thats poor. Hope this helps!!

If I had Bruno, I’d stick it on him.

It was the manner in which he got his hat trick.
It was as if someone had told that him he won’t be getting many pens this season.

        He looked hungry for goals…

He could have had several more as well - so many late runs into the box

If James has picked him out at 1-0 he'd had a tap in

Same for Greenwood's goal - it would have been a tap in for Bruno had Greenwood not tried the shot from a tight angle

I will say Liverpool 1:0 Burnley, Southampton 1:3 Man United.

So yes Salah may get the goal and full bonus. Bruno may blank and have nothing to do with the 3 United goals. However in my basic mind there is a higher chance of a Bruno return based solely on the fact that I believe United will score more goals than Liverpool.

Of course none of that is based in fact as I don't know what the real scores will be, but it's as good a guesstimate as any.

Just don't overthink it. Salah and Bruno both great options, you can't predict who will haul so just pick whoever you like more. I'm personally going with Salah as he plays at home so imho he's slightly better option.

If Gundogan is ruled out, who is the best replacement option?

      A- Delle/Moura
      B- Greenwood
      C- Raphinha/Harrison
      D- someone else

      Current midfield:
      Salah Bruno Barnes Gundogan* Gilmor

Weirdly actually thought Bergwijn looked decent outside of the normal Raphinha/Benrahma/Sarr triangle of mass ownership terror.

I thought the same too, but Moura is too advanced that's why I am leaning towards him.
Raphinha and Harrison have a good fixture and probably am getting one of them.

Raphinha would be the easy pick. The rest of your midfield is template so you could go for someone a bit sexier in that position. Depends on how risk averse you are dude

I like Bergwijn, has a good shot on him and has the pace and trickery to get into space. Would need to see if he'll be a regular starter but he's definitely capable

Man these 3pm kickoffs are a pain for FPL

Choose only one of Villa, Everton, Leicester, Chelsea to watch 90 minutes of last week

Choose only one of Leeds/Everton, City, Brentford, Villa this week

Its like flying blind, highlights just aren't the same

Villa vs Newcastle all the way, got to watch it with triple Villains!

Was a pain last week though 😀

Luckily other games at 3pm this week are of not much use for me, no plans to get any players from them.

I like it honestly. Last season felt like overkill having one game on at Friday night, Saturday noon, 3, 5.30 and sometimes 8, Sunday sometimes 12, 2 and 4.30, and Monday 6 and 8. Sure you're scrambling for news and info but it's more fun having goals flying in all over the place all at once on a Saturday afternoon. I missed the madness

I think people are over estimating this burnley defence, been a long time since they were tight at the back - just conceded 2 at home to Brighton who couldn’t hit a barn door

Lol, Shaw has been one of our best players last season and as well for England. Overrated by whom?

Also, he's got it all for a good FPL pick, attacking, plays for a top side, on corners, gets into the penalty box, assists, shoots, good fixtures.

So you're saying the strategy to win the whole of FPL is basically just to pick all the players that scored the best last season? Disregarding the inclusion of any other factors?

No. I don’t even Digne. Plan is to bring in Shaw when his price drops & Utd have better fixtures. I don’t see them keeping a lot of clean-sheets in those fixtures. Shaw is also injury prone.

From Gw 15, I would gladly get him.

Just saying Shaw is a bit overrated because of that ownership. I mean, he is the most owned player in the game. I’m just against having Shaw for now. Let’s see how it goes

I started the season without Bruno as I had a strategy of spreading the funds for the first six GWs and then WC GW7. I scored 92 points in GW1 which I am happy with. However that Bruno performance was so good and FPL is all about responding sensibly to what you see right? I’m incredibly torn as to whether to abort my plan and just bring Bruno in for a hit before his inevitable haul against Saints (I’m a Saints fan and even I think that’s happening!) or hold firm and trust that over six weeks my Mahrez/Greenwood combo I have will outscore Bruno/4.5m mid combo. What would you do in my position?

I personally don't agree with your plan. As Joshua Bell said, premiums will get 200 plus points a season just stick them in and forget about them. Make your gains with the players around them.

However!!!! If you have your own plan don't go tearing your team up mate. You clearly backed your plan, you would have known that Bruno can go off at any time. You would have known that United had a great run of fixtures. Nothing has changed from the start so why are you changing now?

This is just it. I actually like my team and see points everywhere. My midfield is Salah, Son, Mahrez, Greenwood and Barnes. I have Antonio and Ings up front. But Bruno looked really good. He was literally playing up front. It has made me question my strategy.

You should stick to what you thought out, don't be taking hits to bring in a player that will change the structure of your team just because he went nuclear last week. He may go big this week but all of that is not news.

You should see how it's looking after next week. You have Mahrez playing Norwich. Most on here think that will be a blood bath, if they are right then you have nothing to worry about. If you still have cold feet you have 2 free transfers to change next week.

I was in a similarish position, team is quite different but certainly thought about bringing him in this week (although I left 3.5itb so I wouldn't need to change structure too much). But I thought about it and I felt he'd haul against Leeds and Soton and still did it as I like my team and my planning hasn't gone out the window in spite of missing his 20pts and did fine this week even with that. I think I may have underestimated ManUtd attacking options (primarily as West Ham have started this season as bad defensively as they ended the last, and Villa look weak there too so their good run lasts longer than I expected), but still I look at their run from GW7 and think it'll become more difficult. My team has good prospects for the next few weeks and I may try to bring in Sancho next week or after to cover what I can (not that he's enough for Bruno) but he won't face defences as bad as Leeds and Soton again for a while so I'm just going to keep going as I'm happy with what I'm doing so far.

Also regarding Bruno playing so far forward, as a non-owner that is definitely a worry, but need to keep in mind a few things. Cavani and Martial are still to come back with full fitness, they're out-and-out strikers so they'll stay up there. Greenwood often drifted wide left and right to make space for Bruno and Pogba and it worked as Leeds mark man-to-man so they had heaps of space to run into but even if Greenwood is up top in games this won't always work or be a tactic even. Sky put up an article yesterday about getting the best out of Pogba and had stills of all of his assists, and in all of them you can see not only how much space he was given to play a pass, but how much space his runners had to run into. They might get it this weekend but Wolves looked tighter against Leicester than expected, and Newcastle and West Ham often sit in against ManUtd forcing them to try to break them down, something they struggled with last season.
