With just eight teams in action in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 30, Free Hit usage is about to spike again.

Not far off 40% of the site readers in our sidebar vote said they are planning to activate the Free Hit chip this week, so it’s with this in mind that we have produced a position-by-position guide to pick out the best and most discussed options in each category.

You can read a rundown of the stand-out goalkeepers and defenders here.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

SON HEUNG-MIN/DEJAN KULUSEVSKI

The best Spurs players for FPL Double Gameweek 29 and beyond 5

For tried and tested, look no further than Son Heung-min (£10.9m). The South Korea international has hit 20 or more attacking returns in each of the last five seasons and is well on the way to repeating that feat in the current campaign.

Son has 12 attacking returns in 13 matches from Gameweek 14 onwards (only Jarrod Bowen (£6.8m) has more), averaging 6.7 points per start in the process. Notably, only team-mate Harry Kane (£12.4m) and Salah can better his non-penalty expected goal involvement (non-pen xGI) figure in that time.

Dejan Kulusevski (£6.2m), meanwhile, is certainly a name to consider in the mid-price midfield pool, having bagged his sixth attacking return in five starts at Old Trafford last weekend. The in-form Swede has actually registered more shots in the box (9/6) and penalty box touches (29/18) than Son during that period, but does trail his more expensive team-mate for things like big chances and expected goal involvement (xGI) since his first start:

Faith in Tottenham Hotspur players is shaken by five defeats in their last eight Premier League matches, but opponents West Ham United will be coming off the back of a demanding UEFA Europe League second leg against Sevilla, while there are still question marks over their backline, with just one clean sheet arriving in the last 10 away league matches – and even that was against goal-shy Burnley.

HARVEY BARNES

Barnes offering differential potential between now and end of FPL season

With three goals and six assists in his last 13 Premier league appearances, two of which were as a substitute, Harvey Barnes (£6.5m) is an appealing midfield differential.

During that time, he has produced 22 shots in the box, while his 0.41 xGI per 90 minutes tally is narrowly ahead of team-mate James Maddison (£6.7m) and just behind positional rivals Bowen and Philippe Coutinho (£7.5m).

The main drawback is concerns over rotation. The 24-year-old winger is not just competing with others for his place but one of the natural fall guys when Brendan Rodgers decides to go winger-less in, say, the 3-5-2 that he used in Gameweek 22.

However, Barnes has now completed 90 minutes in four of the Foxes’ last five matches, and given Maddison’s new-found rotation risk status, is the stand-out Leicester option for their home clash against a Brentford side without a shut-out on the road since Gameweek 5.

BUKAYO SAKA/GABRIEL MARTINELLI

Saka’s goal contributions, Lacazette’s creativity, Watford’s home form: FPL notes 5

Bukayo Saka (£6.6m) is averaging 6.5 points per match over his last 11 starts. During that period (from Gameweek 16 onwards), he’s second for shots, joint-seventh for chances created and 13th for xGI among midfielders, and many of those ahead of him are much more expensive in FPL.

He’s also, in theory, the securest route into an exciting Arsenal attack – his only two benching’s this season have come off the back of fitness concerns.

A creator of chances from open play and prominent at dead-ball situations, Saka’s minutes-per-xGI figure over the course of the season is also better than those of Martin Odegaard (£5.5m) and Emile Smith-Rowe (5.7m). However, it does fall short of cut-price option Gabriel Martinelli’s (£5.3m) total, which isn’t bad considering he costs £1.3m less.

With Smith Rowe recovered from Covid, it’s probably best to monitor Martinelli’s minutes at the Emirates on Wednesday before committing, but he has started each of the last 12 Premier League matches he has been available for, producing four goals and three assists.

Arsenal’s matchup at Aston Villa does feel very hard to predict, especially with the Gunners facing a demanding clash with Liverpool less than 72 hours before they travel to Villa Park, but they are bang in form, having won their last five Premier League matches in a row.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO

 1

Philippe Coutinho has settled well at Aston Villa following his January arrival, having produced four goals and three assists in his first nine appearances for the club.

During that time, he ranks top among colleagues for shots, with 24, while he has chipped in with 14 created chances too, another team-leading total.

Averaging 9.25 points per match at Villa Park, the Brazilian will be key in unlocking an Arsenal backline which has conceded just three goals in their last four matches on the road. However, Watford caused them real problems defensively in Gameweek 28, with Steven Gerrard’s side arguably possessing more firepower, which is more encouraging for those backing Villa’s attacking assets.

If funds are tighter, Jacob Ramsey (£4.8m) offers a cheaper alternative, who has netted four goals across his last nine appearances.

OTHER CANDIDATES

FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Raphinha (£6.5m) has somehow racked up the highest xGI figure of any Premier League player over the last four Gameweeks, with the previously below-par Brazilian looking more like his old self on Sunday.

Notably, only six FPL midfielders, all of them much more expensive, have scored more goals than Raphinha (nine) this season. The winger is also among the top three in his category for both goal attempts and chances created in 2021/22.

The downside is a trip to Molineux, which is far from straightforward, given that Wolves have conceded just 12 goals on home turf all season.

Dead-ball specialist Christian Eriksen (£5.5m) is an another intriguing Gameweek 30 differential, with opponents Leicester City vulnerable defending free-kicks and corners all year.

In fact, it was the Dane who assisted Ivan Toney’s (£6.6m) first goal against Burnley with a sublime cross, while also providing the pass that led to the forward being fouled for his injury-time spot kick.

Eriksen has created a modest three chances in his 218 minutes of pitch-time at Brentford but with his set-piece expertise and Leicester’s related weaknesses, he could thrive.

There probably won’t be too many takers for Daniel Podence (£5.5m), but he has registered two goals and 11 shots in his last four matches at Molineux and will be up against the division’s worst defence. Should Hwang Hee-chan (£5.4m) be ruled out through injury, that will further his game-time prospects.

Team news will also be important this week: Jarrod Bowen (£6.8m) and Michail Antonio (£7.5m) could both be absent for the Spurs game due to injury, which may spell more game-time for the previously peripheral Said Benrahma (£5.7m), who impressed when delivering attacking returns on Sunday.

Thanks. Here's the answer to my question and more from this link for others' benefit
        Quote unquote
As it stands, Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley, Leicester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United are the only teams guaranteed to ‘double’.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers could possibly ‘blank’.

    Ramsdale
    Saiss Kilman Doherty
    Saka Coutinho Son Raphinha
    Lacazette Jimenez

    Dubravka Salah TAA Rudiger Broja

    1FT, 0.0itb

    How's this plan?

    GW30 Salah Jimenez >> Barnes Kane (-4)
    GW31 Coutinho Son >> Kulusevski Salah (-4)

    Cheers

Salah doesn’t play so I suppose is Barnes and Kane need 8 more points than Jimenez to break even… I’d captain Kane FWIW

I really don’t know what to do mate, currently protecting a lead and I’m sure many will bring in Kane or already have him and (c) him… so it’s more damage limitation

But equally resisting could be the answer

Wow, you have the luxury of transferring out a player who has fixture in 30? Not too impressed with the idea of selling and buying back Salah for a -8 for just 1 week, but could work.

You have SON, thats perfectly fine. You are planning a minus 8, with a lot of doubles etc. The one chasing you can do Weghorst in 31, and be better prepared for gw33. I would save with 10 players, so 2ft going into 31. Reason is:
You have a fine team for 31, so Jimenez to Weghorst, which then probably blocks your rivals move (wether Weghorst is the best choice is another debate)

Does this team need FH or making one of the moves below should be enough? Have 1FT, 0.7 itb. Have all the chips left.

    DDG
    Cancelo, White*, Rudiger, Digne**
    Kulu*, Coutinho*, Luiz*, Saka*
    Laca*, Kane*

    Foster, Salah, Adams, Livra

    Which option looks better?

    A) Adams+ DDG> Toney+ Sa/Lloris? (-4)
    B) Digne+ DDG> Coady+ Lloris (-4)
    C) Digne+ DDG> Doherty+ Sa (-4)
    D) Don't take -4 for defense, only Adams> Toney/Jimenez
    E) FH

              Good point.

I'll have an eye on BB but I'm interested in what you see your WC31 team to be.

I'll follow what you do over the next week or two so you don't need to spell it out now.

I'm interested in who you will focus on for the run in.

I realise FH, BB etc adds dynamics to all of this.

You can roll with FH this week, build a BB33 team with WC31, FH36. This could possibly be your most optimal strategy. Takes advantage of all chips, strong team for GW30-36 without any compromise.

I like to plan for strategies but this is atrocious.

Should I get Kane for a hit to protect my rank?
Should I just play with 9 or get Toney with my FT?
Should I roll FT and plan to do Doherty/Tierney & Coutinho to James & Kai next GW?
Should I use my FT next week to get Pope for the doubles in 31 and 33 or just keep my Ramsdale Guaita combo?
Should I keep Weghorst and Wood for the doubles in 32 and 33?
Should I drop Robbo for Cancelo next week?

Should I get Kane for a hit to protect my rank?
      - Depends who is going out. If you dont have a WC, then getting him this week for a hit sets you for long term.

Should I just play with 9 or get Toney with my FT?
      - If you have WC, yes. If no WC, nope. Their fixtures arent great.

Should I roll FT and plan to do Doherty/Tierney & Coutinho to James & Kai next GW?
      - These moves are good but could still be worth it with a -4

Should I use my FT next week to get Pope for the doubles in 31 and 33 or just keep my Ramsdale Guaita combo?
      - Keep the combo, not worth it. Pope gets you just one extra fixture and that includes Man City.

Should I keep Weghorst and Wood for the doubles in 32 and 33?
      - Tough. Options are pretty limited upfront, so you might as well keep if benching both is possible. Just use them in DGWs.

Should I drop Robbo for Cancelo next week?
      - Yes

WC first draft, pretty low TV, so had to add some dross players but I guess they should be alright for bench.

    Ramsdale
    Trent, Cancelo, Coady, White
    Salah, Mahrez, Havertz, Mount, Martinelli
    Kane

Bench : Gunnarson, Gelhardt, Cucho, Williams

Can do something like Mount downgrade and upgrading one of the forwards to Jimenez but Chelsea's fixtures are sweet and Jimenez has not been reliable in recent weeks.

Hmm interesting, no CHE defender? Probably cash limited. I have no WC and GW31 team will depend on my decision on choosing either Son or Kane.

Non-WC team could look like this:
        Sa (Dubravka)
        TAA Robbo Doherty White (Coady)
        Salah Raph Saka Martinelli Gordon
        Kane (Jimenez Broja)

James in 32, FH33, Laporte in 34 and hits here and there to adjust 34-35, FH36

        Have Mahrez

I can downgrade Mount to some cheapie and upgrade Coady/White to James but I think they are capable to match CSs with Chelsea. And Mount can hopefully be a decent differential, still unsure about him, so he may not be in my final draft.

Mahrez, in and out of team. CL player, so Pep plays him more in CL than PL. Havetz and Mount, Chelsea will, as they are not really fighting for anything in the league, 2 midfielder looks risky. Martinelli first choice, but not guaranteed. With 2 cheap strikers that are not nailed either, i think this looks like potential trouble around CL games, but dont get me wrong, i really like the picks, but the total could be more trouble than you like.
Re Chelsea: i think because they are pretty safe for third, they will do little like vs Newcastle, play safe getting cs and some 1 or 2-0's, so my route will be to go for defenders.

With no WC left and low TV it's not viable to have both Son and Kane from Gw31 onwards (plan for FH33 FH36). Which combo would you go?

-4 is a worthy risk for a player that isn’t playing in my opinion . Even if the 2 replacements blank you’ve made your -4 back and anything else is a bonus .

Not necessarily - may lose further points for bookings/goals conceded and may also book yourself in for a further transfer down the line to get rid of whoever you bring in so there’s an additional cost. I’d probably just sell Willock for Saka/Barnes (if affordable)/Martinelli/Odegaard here and not take the hit unless there’s someone that you really feel is worthwhile bringing in. For me most other options this week are all a bit meh.

I know that it's very rare to have returns from all eleven players but I'm going to be greedy and go for a team with no conflicts of interest i.e no Arsenal or Villa defenders against Villa and Arsenal forwards.

Snap on the front 7 and keeper.

So will the FH differential be which Wolves defender csn get attacking points or which other defender hauls?

I guess this week FH can unite a bit against non FH but they'll have a core of these.

I only had 4 players as i always planned to play FH30 across the blank.

Think I’m just going to go with 8 this week and save the FT. Could easily see every result being 1-1 with the likes of Klich, Moutinho, Xhaka, McGinn, Moura, Fornals etc scoring - basically anyone who isn’t an FPL option! Like the flexibility it gives going forward to get a couple of City and/or Chelsea assets.

    Amartey Doherty (TAA Robbo Rudiger)
    Saka Coutinho Raphinha (Salah Elanga)

There won't be 100 + scores because there's only 4 fixtures and no BB or TC boosts.

But i find it incredible that the narrative is to even roll FT when fielding 8 or 9 players.

If FH lands on the right players there's rank gains to be had a plenty.

If I had 2 free hits left I’d probably play one but the fixtures are all really difficult to call. I don’t see the point in hedging (ie Raphinha plus Sa/Coutinho plus Tierney etc) as it limits your ceiling and for me free hit is all about chasing the upside but I wouldn’t feel confident that a team with, say, triple Wolves, Arsenal, Spurs and double Leicester would necessarily return all that well.

        Yeah, maybe you're right.

Many have played into a core team which has returned points over the last few weeks too. Saka, Coutinho, Kane etc.

        The midfield virtually picks itself.

        Less differentials to play into.

I still feel the narrative is to hold a final FH for a dgw is because most want to bang on fixtures whereas most players don't normally return consecutively in back to back games.

I guess the fall back is you're more likely to get one decent return from a player over 2 fixtures.

I'm Mr Brightside though. Wolverhampton have rediscovered their clean sheet mojo and should hopefully get another one against Leeds; I feel that the Villa and Arsenal game has goals in it; I think that Leicester are overall a better team than Brentford and will beat them 2-0 and Spurs will be wearing their Dr Jekyll masks this weekend and comfortably beat a Europa League fatigued West Ham...

I agree with most of that and reasons to be cheery.

Wolves triple defence could be the higher risk /reward for an upside differential.

Also, whilst Brentford are better at home with Eriksen and Toney and Raya back i wouldn't bet against goals each way v Leicester City in that one.

          I guess it's a call of Toney v Jiménez

... with Kane and Lacazette up top.

Or stack the midfield in a 3-5-2 formation?

Waiting to BB, it looks like virtually everyone will be able to field 15 with little planning or pain in the big dgw36

... barring injuries, suspensions etc for the second fixture or surprise rotations!

So WC not required to set up for such a huge double gw.

      Arsenal

      Wolverhampton Wanderers

Could all double on the latest fixture permutations for gw36.

But that's the core of your squad, who will double.

I was thinking more about hits and wildcard and transfers to play into a dgw with a remaining chip like BB.

I'm quite happy to play say 12 dgw and 3 singles on a BB.

The 15 rarely comes off in full force.

So optimal strategy may be to:

    WC31
    FH33
    BB36

Or TC in 36 for those that hold that chip?

So you can wildcard into fixtures for gw31, 32 and 34 onwards and tweak with free transfers for BB36.

Takes dgw/blanks in gw33 out of the medium term planning.

FH is easier because that week takes care of itself, so long as you're in reasonable shape.

Also makes more use of your final wildcard in the run in.

I think WC31, BB33 and FH36 could be better since DGW36 is likely to be announced by GW33 plus injuries/suspension could ruin the BB36 plan.

TC on Salah vs WAT is a decent SGW choice. Dont think I would use in DGW if I had BB/FH left.

Possibly, of course it depends on players being fit and selected but by and large all the form teams look set to double in gw36 which makes it a relatively straightforward play, with some tweaks in the build up from gw34.

    TAA James Doherty
    Salah Barnes Saka Kulu Raph
    Kane Laca

Think I’ll use my FH for DGW33 with this team.

Use my transfers in GW31 to get Havertz and sell Salah in GW32 (mci vs liv).

Then WC in GW34 with a strong 12-13 players for DGW36-37 as I don’t have my BB left.
