The Premier League yesterday announced the scheduling of the next batch of fixtures for April and, in doing so, confirmed two more Double Gameweeks. In case you missed it, a summary is here.

Confirmed so far are the following:

  • Gameweek 31: Confirmed doubles for Burnley (MCI/EVE) and Everton (whu/bur)
  • Gameweek 33: Confirmed doubles for Brighton and Hove Albion (tot/mci), Burnley (whu/SOU), Leicester City (new/eve), Manchester United (NOR/liv), Newcastle United (LEI/CPL)

Now, here is where it gets a bit more convoluted.

Gameweek 33 is also the weekend of the FA Cup semi-finals, so the teams that progress in the quarter-finals of that competition are likely to have a blank on that weekend but will still have a ‘single Gameweek’ with a fixture thrown in midweek, as per yesterday’s announcements.

So for the basis of this article, I am going to assume that Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace (all the bookies’ favourites) will progress.

Based on this assumption, a double for Arsenal (sou/che) and Southampton (ARS/bur) also looks likely, as Man City are strong favourites to overcome the Saints in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The above scenario would also lead to blanks in Gameweek 33 for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United and Aston Villa, which is tricky given that many of us are loaded up on these teams by virtue of the fact that they play in Gameweek 30.

Initial thoughts

Lukaku injury latest as Rodgers addresses Leicester’s poor form 2

My first reaction was that Leicester have to be the team to target with your free transfer(s) in Gameweek 30 as they have a good home fixture against Brentford and are still likely to get two more doubles added in later, depending on how their European campaign goes. However, with the Foxes safe in the league and pretty much out of contention for a European qualifying position, there is a very real danger of them prioritising the UEFA Europa Conference League and resting their star players in the league matches. The fixture congestion is likely to be immense for Brendan Rodgers’ troops after the international break, if they continue in Europe.

Arsenal also appeal with a double against Spurs, which is yet to be scheduled, but this is of course based on the assumption that City overcome Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Should I Free Hit in Gameweek 33?

Like many of you, I still have my second Free Hit chip left to play. I also have my Wildcard and Bench Boost and will likely not use a chip in Gameweek 30. From what we know so far, Gameweeks 36 and 37 are likely to have doubles thrown in as well – so is there more to be gained from saving the Free Hit for then? Let’s have a closer look.

The above image shows the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker ranked by fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 31-33. I used this because if I’m not going to Free Hit, I’m going to be using transfers to bring in players for Double Gameweek 33 and it’s important that they have good entry points. It’s no use if, say, a team with two fixtures in Gameweek 33 faces Liverpool and Man City immediately beforehand.

Keeping in mind the assumptions we mentioned earlier, the teams with the most enticing doubles in Gameweek 33 are Burnley (whu/SOU), Leicester (new/eve) and Newcastle (LEI/CRY). Man Utd’s double isn’t the greatest but the Norwich fixture alone is possibly enough to justify the entry. They also have good fixtures in Gameweeks 31 and 32. Arsenal also have one match away to Chelsea but the Gunners are arguably in better form than the Blues at the minute.

Burnley have an excellent entry point in Double Gameweek 31, despite one fixture being against Man City. The Norwich match in Gameweek 32 is huge for the Clarets. Leicester assets you could bring in for Gameweek 30 and they’re playable in Gameweeks 31 and 32, as well, with Old Trafford hardly a fortress nowdays. The same goes for Arsenal. Newcastle are a bit more dodgy and you really wouldn’t want to bring anyone in until Gameweek 33.

In my opinion, the Free Hit is as much about the players you don’t want as much as the players you do. So it is important to see what fixtures the mainstays in our squad have that week, the likes of Harry Kane (£12.4m), Mohamed Salah (£13.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) etc.

In Gameweek 33, Spurs play Brighton at home, which is a great fixture. Liverpool would host Man Utd, which is alright. Chelsea would face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, which isn’t great, but not many of us are loaded up on Chelsea anyway. I still wouldn’t mind playing Reece James (£6.2m) there, though.

Another exercise I like to do is make a Free Hit team for Gameweek 33 and see how far off it I would be by just using transfers.

GAMEWEEK 33 FREE HIT DRAFT

The above team triples up on Man Utd and Burnley with double-ups on Leicester and Newcastle. Che Adams (£7.0m) would be the only striker I’d want from Saints, given Armando Broja’s (£5.5m) rotation risk.

The first thing I ask myself: sure, United have a banker in Norwich City, but is someone like Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) necessarily going to outscore Salah, who is at home to – wouldn’t you just know it – the Red Devils? Probably, but not definitely.

I won’t go through it position by position but what stands out to me is that I’m basically banking on teams that are not very good. The upside is there but would it surprise me to see Burnley and Newcastle concede in both their games? Nope, it would not, and I would rather play Alexander-Arnold or Joao Cancelo (£6.9m) over any of the three I have selected in defence, even with a single Gameweek fixture.

I think the main targets from this team can be got with free transfers. Harvey Barnes (£6.5m) might come in for Gameweek 30, while Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) could be moved to Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) in Gameweek 31. Then there is the sideways Kane to Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.2m) move in Gameweek 32 and the switch from Raphinha (£6.5m) to Ryan Fraser (£5.3m) in Gameweek 33. Most of us are already stacked on Arsenal anyway so while they might not be the ideal doublers, they’re still doublers. Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) can easily outscore David de Gea (£5.2m) or Nick Pope (£5.4m), for instance.

The fixtures are not great in Gameweek 34 for many of the doublers, however, and if you don’t have a Wildcard in hand, it can get a little tricky. It’s not all bad, though: in Gameweeek 34, Newcastle have Norwich, Burnley face Wolves. Leicester meet Villa, and Arsenal host United.

So the obvious question is – when else could I Free Hit?

OTHER GAMEWEEKS TO FREE HIT

Points shared at Selhurst Park as Cancelo receives maximum FPL bonus 5

I think it is worth saving the Free Hit for one of the Double Gameweeks in 36/37, depending on how they pan out.

This, of course, is entirely contingent on the favourites progressing in the FA Cup. If, say, Man City do go out of the competition this weekend, then the picture changes completely with a City triple-up for their Double Gameweek 33 becoming a no-brainer.

Based on the current information, I think it is worth planning to tackle Gameweek 33 without a Free Hit. If the situation changes, however, we can adapt to it and switch strategy.

We will be discussing this in detail on tomorrow’s FPL Wire episode, so join us here.

1 FH, WC & BB left - but I can't see a way of not using FH this week :'(

Active players in GW30 for me:

    Tierney / Doherty
    Son / Saka / Ramsey / Bowen*
    Kane

that's 6 not incl Bowen. Do I just FH & take GW 33 on the chin? or -4 to try and field 8

Similar position as yourself, leaning more towards taking the hit to get a total of 8 players out.

Don’t think there’s much upside in free hitting this weeks. Rubbish fixtures, plus most have 3 Arsenal / 3 Spurs already.

    Ramsdale
    Doherty
    Son / Kulu / Saka / Raphinha

This is all I have for 30 as it stands. Worth doing KWP/Maupey to White/Toney for -4 to get 8 players out?

I'm not intending to get any tbh. Happy with the core of my squad.

I might pick up Gordon or Weghorst if someone from my core teams gets injured or I need to raise funds but that's it.

If you don't FH in 33 and you intend to BB in 36, there's only GW37 to target for FH with DGWs.

I don't really see what situation you're holding the FH in 33 for exactly. Engaged managers will always have some degree of planning in place so will rarely be seriously caught out. This ideal FH opportunity will most likely not come up.

FH33 is a great opportunity to get in Newcastle, United and Leicester assets for one week without compromising your team.

Seems overly cautious to not FH33 when it has quite a few confirmed doubles from teams that we don't own players from.

      38:

      Arsenal vs. Everton
      Chelsea vs. Watford
      Crystal Palace vs. Man Utd
      Man City vs. Villa
      Norwich vs. Spurs

        This is a good point...

A FH in GW38 is quite juicy.

However, I intend for my WC in GW34 to be heavy on Liverpool, City, Chelsea for DGW36 (assuming they progress in the cup) so I don't think of this as a big problem. The only player I might struggle to get for GW38 is Kane since funds will be spread for BB in 36 and I don't see myself investing in forwards.

Even so, go back and check last year week 38 it was a goalfest. Players playing at home always want to give the fans a big send off. If I can work my transfers in to work 33 I think 38 is a great week to FH

The main issue for me is that I'm not super confident in removing strong SGW options, e.g. Ronaldo for Kane. Only fixture that I might want to swerve is Chelsea v Arsenal but with Arsenal double I'm happy to play Saka & Tierney anyway, and dread to think what could happen leaving James out at any time. Sancho in 31 & Barnes in 33 looks fine to me. But I'm starting to feel like I might end up taking FH2 to the beach...

This is going to be a problem no matter when you FH for the rest of the year since only GW37 (only very niche cases like WHU making the Europa League final) could have a blank.

I generally favor FH in blank GWs, but this particular blank (GW30) is so unappetizing and was setup so cleanly from triple Arsenal, triple Spurs in 29 that there's no value in it.

Think this is a balanced view. I have 1 fh left and suspect I’ll use it in 33 and bb in 36. Only other alternative is navigate 33 with ft, bb 36 and fh 37 but that gives less ft opportunity

FH33 also allows to get Chelsea players in 31 and sell Salah in 32 which probably won’t be possible if just using transfers for DGW33.

Yep free hit 33 and wildcard 34 to bench boost in 36 seems optimal strategy.

For those without Wilcard free hit 33 and use transfers for 36 seems logical choice

    Ramsdale
    Doherty Ait Nouri Digne*
    Bowen* Son Saka Ramsey
    Kane Toney

Assuming neither Bowen nor Digne are fit I have 8 (noting Ait Nouri a risk also, so could be 7).

Despite my post yesterday I'm coming around to your way of thinking on this one. FH33 might be the best option.

I don't have a good enough rank to have the luxury to WC to set up a bench boost in isolation, but the simple fact of the matter is I can't justify enough transfers for a 32 wildcard when I already own many of the 33 doublers who are likely to do well.

Any thoughts on this team? 1 FT, 1.2m ITB, no chips left.

    Ramsdale (Dubravka)
    Doherty Coady (Digne TAA Silva)
    Son Kulusevski Saka Raphinha (Salah)
    Lacazette Jimenez (Broja)

    A) Save FT
    B) Digne > Soyuncu
    C) Broja & Digne > Daka & Thomas (-4 pts)
    D) smth else?

Basically is any of the transfers above worth it or is it better to save and use the extra transfer for the upcoming doubles given that I have no chips left?

Not often I completely disagree with Zophar!

GW33 looks an excellent time to FH, assuming the favourites win their FA cup ties this weekend. In my current squad as a GW26 wildcarder I have Wolves, Villa and Leeds players who are all likely to blank, let alone double, and I have no Leicester or Newcastle players who appear to have the best double. No Man U either who face Norwich. And with the possible exception of Leicester and Arsenal, I don't think I would want players from the doubling teams in 33 post 33 either, certainly not Man U, Southampton, Newcastle, or Burnley. The other factor drawing me to FH in 33 is the 36 situation (which i will get to shortly).

GW34 and 35 look good times to add City players for an exceptional run including a likely double in 36. They and Liverpool look key if they are both still fighting for the title, as they are the best teams, motivated, and will minimise rotation.

GW36 is very interesting. If we look at the teams that are likely to double here according to Ben Crellin (and I agree with his logic on this occasion as this is a totally free midweek and is based on the outstanding doubles remaining plus the likely doubles caused by the favourites progressing in the FA cup), this includes Liverpool, City, Leicester, Everton, Chelsea, Villa, Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves. In my opinion, given the favourable fixtures of these sides across GW34-38 as a whole, and their motivation (a title race for City/Liv, a top 4 race for Spurs/Arsenal) its going to be incredibly easy for me (and many others) to field a side of 11 doublers in this week, and good quality players with doubles aswell. This isn't the likes of Weghorst and Kilman with a double, this is Kane, Salah, Cancelo, James, Saka, Coutinho, etc, who are crucially, players we will have anyway. Therefore the value of a FH in 36 is lost imo. What I would say is it does look a good time to Bench boost, with little preparation needed.

Completely in agreement. I am using my last fh this week so won't in 33, but am comfortable that will be fine with a couple of ft's. Also BB left and this will almost certainly be used in gw36

you've got 6 FTs including this weeks transfers to prepare for the biggest GW of the season. Plenty will be BBing, that week, or WCing into it and FHing. The ceiling could very high. You'll be using transfers in preparation for GW36 but its also a week where there could be more rotation. You're going to be able to cope better using a FH in 36 if theres late news or news leading up to deadline that will help you maximise that gameweek. I.e.more chance of getting the best 3 City players

Thank you for reasoned detailed post, glad to have your feedback.

I think a big difference here is I still have my wildcard to play, so I could wildcard out the likes of weghorst ronaldo etc in 34.

My concern is that it looks like Chelsea, Leicester, Everton and Villa are currently the only teams that look like they will have back to back doubles in 37 and they might have a good double in one week and a poor one in another etc

So I'm thinking dead ending into 33, wc in 34, bb in 36/37 and free hit in 36/37 could work.

Thanks Zophar, appreciate your reply, I watch the wire every week and am a big fan of the show.

I think having the WC in hand does make a huge difference, agreed. And using it in 34 may be a good way to maximise the 2 mini seasons of 30-33 and 34-38. In my position using the FH to "jump" 33 helps and is a fair compromise for my team, but its sub optimal compared to the 34WC, which gets rid of the 33 doublers and you can set up with 3 liverpool, 3 city, and a mixture of Chelsea, Spurs, arsenal, leicester and villa. For people in my position that process has to be undertaken more slowly, or with hits in GW34. WC34 lends itself well to a BB aswell as Villa has Ramsey, Everton has Gordon, there's plenty of doubling 4.5m defenders available, and you can self select 2 doubling keepers.

I think the point you make on 37 is fair also. Although I think each of the double doubling teams you mention will have at least 1 excellent fixture in both 36 and 37. But you are right that it looks like they will get one double with 2 excellent fixtures and one double with one excellent, 1 poor fixture. For those like me without a FH left by then, compromise again looks the way to go, getting them in and just taking the poor fixture on the chin, but there may be an opportunity to exploit for you. It will depend also to an extent where the tough fixture falls, I'll be hoping it drops into 37, you'll be hoping 36!

I think the strategy you propose looks sensible for your team and the chips you have left. I must admit I hadn't looked in depth at it from that point of view before, as we tend to view things from the perspective of our own teams. Having thought about this a lot for my team, I still think the FH33 is best for me, and possibly for others who wildcarded in 26/28 too. I think this is a really interesting topic though, perhaps it could be raised on the wire? It would be interesting to get Bakar's perspective on this as I think he wildcarded in 26 like me and has a similar team and just 1 FH remaining also.

    What would you do here?
    Ramsey.
    Tierney, Saiss, Doherty.
    **Bowen, Kulu, Raphinha, Ramsey.
    Laca, Kane, **King.
    Bach, Salah, TAA, Cancelo.
    1ft, 0.7m ITB
    WC 32-34, 1 FH left maybe 33.

    1. Bowen + King- Tielemans + Toney (-4).
    2. Bowen + King-> Barnes + 6.5m or less striker- (Hwang maybe) -4.
    2. Bowen -> Barnes. Play 10 this week.

Confirmed - Bowen not available for 30

Moyes on Cresswell/Antonio: "They have done a little light training. They did not train with the team today but with the fitness coaches, we will assess them tomorrow. Bowen is not available and will not be until after the international break "

Well there’s a chance they end up with games on the Tues and Thurs between gw37 and gw38 - and that would be a gw37 double.

Sun, Tues, Thur is extremely unlikely, and even if it happened nobody will play all three.

    C) Broja > Hwang

Reading all your collective wisdom, I’ll save the free hit for GW33.

What is the priority here taking 2 transfers? Wolves defender and an alternative striker (have enough to bring Laca in)?

    Rams
    Doherty, Digne*
    Son, Kulu, Coutinho, Saka
    Watkins

Sanchez, TAA, Cancelo, Livra, Salah, Dennis, Broja

Who would you prefer to have out of Son and Kane after the blank ? It's Kane for me, so I'm doing Salah and Dennis out for Martinelli and Kane (c), leaving ITB for Son to Salah in GW31.

Think that random tweet was shown to be a fake. The “photo” the person said was them at the field was a stock image - if you lie about that then probably lying about the other stuff.

Have 2FH left. Around 2k OR now. Looking at the likely scenario Im loaded up already on players with double 36 but can add few ManCity with transfers. Have 7 players with game this week and 1ft. Around 6 players with DGW33. Looks like that week will be FH time. Looks like there will be few doubles in GW37 so that might be all right for second FH.

Question. If Im set on FH33 the when the other FH
    A) Now and add those 8 players up to 11.
    B) GW37, see where Im at on that point and attack close to season end. Or jump on the FH if some good small DGW pops up.

      I wouldn’t FH30.
7 is close to plenty - you might lose a little but you can make more than that up in a dgwFH.

Awesome work on your OR and to have them chips still too!
