With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

First up is five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman, who is now on board as Scout’s Deputy Editor.

... 2

After four days of price reveals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) opened its doors for the 2022/23 campaign on Tuesday.

So, in this, my first column of the new season, I thought I’d jot down some initial thoughts on strategy, plus teams/players that have caught my eye, and then build a very rough first draft based around that.

There are still just over four weeks to go until the season gets underway, and lots will change during that time, so I’m treating this as a kind of pre-season Watchlist that I can then develop.

SHORTER-TERM THINKING?

Firstly, the most important takeaway from Tuesday’s launch: Fantasy managers will get unlimited transfers during the six-week hiatus between Gameweeks 16 and 17, when the Premier League takes a break to accommodate the World Cup.

It’s effectively a third chance to completely overhaul your squad, as the two usual Wildcards remain in place.

As you have to use the first one by Gameweek 16, the season is almost split into quarters, which means I think we can afford to be a bit more aggressive and short-term with our initial picks.

This means I’m not really looking beyond Gameweek 6 for my initial set-up, as realistically, the latest I’ll use my first Wildcard – in between Gameweeks 8 and 9 – is the September international break.

As a result, I’m considering Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne (£5.0m) in an attempt to capitalise on those opening four fixtures against Bournemouth, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

By which point, he can then be moved onto someone in the £4.5m defender pool, a bracket I really like this year.

BEST £4.5M FPL DEFENDERS?

The £4.5m defender category is absolutely stacked with talent this year, and due to the kind pricing of the premium options, I feel it might be ignored.

And I like the idea of moving this spot around during the season to capitalise on certain fixture swings, with the names below all catching my eye over the past few days.

For example, James Justin (£4.5m) and Sven Botman’s (£4.5m) good runs start in Gameweek 6, while Vladimir Coufal’s (£4.5m) is a week later, something I touched on in my recent ‘When to best ‘hop on’ players with good fixtures’ article.

Lewis Dunk, Tariq LampteyBrighton and Hove Albion
Marc GuehiCrystal Palace

CHELSEA‘S FPL ASSETS

Given that Chelsea have consistently been one of the best defences in the league under Thomas Tuchel, their assets feel a little under-priced this year. Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), plus both wing-backs at just £6.0m, could offer real value, even if the mooted switch to a back-four formation comes to fruition.

A lot will depend on recruitment and if they can successfully replace Antonio Rudiger, but if they can, a £5.0m starting ‘keeper from a Champions League-level defence feels like a sound investment, especially if you think they can improve on last season’s tally of 15 clean sheets.

The impact of a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation could also boost their attacking output, which is why I have included Mason Mount (£8.0m) in my first draft. However, if Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) completes his move from Manchester City, I have a feeling he could really shake things up, with the prospect of Raphinha (£7.0m) feeding him from the right-flank a mouthwatering one for FPL managers. In that scenario, the winger would almost certainly make it into my Gameweek 1 team.

BEST BUDGET FPL PICKS

So, it’s safe to say a lot will change between now and next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline, but isn’t it fun being back talking FPL again armed with all the info?

Also, a quick shout out to Pras and Andy, who made some really nice points in last night’s ‘How to build a first draft’ video, which I’ve linked below in case you missed it.

    A) Kane, Tomiyasu, Botman, Alisson (5-3-2)
    B) Jesus, Diaz, Perisic, Henderson (4-4-2)

Considering the 5-3-2 with Salah, Haaland & Kane but the 4-4-2 seems a lot more balanced. How concerned are people about Jesus' returns and Diaz rotation?

Yup that's what I'm saying, but people see it as a transfer coming down the line. Perisic is almost a non option with the way Conte last used him, now he's older in a tougher league

Realistically this season it's going to be one premium mid and one premium forward to start with.

      Salah/Son
      Haaland/Kane

Bruno won't get a look in unless he fired big time and Sterling just isn't consistent enough.

Neco Williams (4m) could be done deal to Nott Forest by weekend says Ornstein. 4m starting wing back. Had regular G/A assist for Fulham. No brainer

It's a hard one for me to decide whether to go for a playing 4m def if one crops up, especially for a side that will most likely be in a relegation
battle. So much value in defence from higher priced options to 4.5m options

Last season he looked great from an attacking perspective but you need to bear in mind that we were hammering most teams so he had a bit of an easy time. On the odd occasion he needed to defend I was far from convinced.
TBH I’m not sure how well he’ll do in a premier league team fighting for survival which might explain why Fulham haven’t already signed him.
Of course if he moves from Liverpool then at 4.0 he’ll be on my bench but unlikely to ever be in my starting XI.

I know that everybody hypes up 5 at the back start as a good way to go, but at the same time GW1 scores are usually higher then usual I have heard.Doesn't that show us otherwise that in GW1 defenders don't get as many clean sheets....Attacking defenders might get their points from attack then I guess.

I was all over 5 at the back assuming Chelsea were playing 343 so James and Chilwell are essential. If they play 433 then they are ruined.

Yeah I’ve been thinking about this I’m sure previously it can take some teams a few matches to get into a good defensive rhythm.

Might apply to Chelsea who'll be bedding in new defenders. Liverpool and City defenders know each other.

It varies year to year, but City kept five clean sheets in their opening six matches last season. Liverpool and Chelsea four each.

In 2020/21 it was much less, but it was an odd season with matches behind closed doors.

First draft that I'm okay with done. WC6 or soon after.
Shame not to triple on Arse attack, but there's scope to downgrade a City mid if they're not performing (or Haaland to Nketiah!??).
If Arsenal sign another quality CF/RW, I will avoid/get rid of Saka.

    Sanchez
    TAA Robertson Chilwell James
    Diaz Mahrez Foden Saka
    Haaland Jesus

Haha fair comment. All my other fiddling has seen me with no TAA or Saka, and with 2 of Martinelli, ESR and Nketiah. I think the short race to the first WC means there's less scope to experiment. Hoping my GW1 team will be less orthodox though, for sure.

Thanks Snevitz. This team would see an earlier WC, probably, and I'd plan to captain Haaland, but open to switch to Jesus, Diaz or a defender if they are looking better options up to the WC.

I don't think a single game will tell us much. It's more about getting minutes into players' legs.

Foden's versatility is a plus, but why do you think he would be predominantly deployed on the right?

I see Mahrez getting plenty of minutes there to start the season, at least.

Sam Lee (City reporter for The Athletic) has said a few times that sources close to Foden say he wants to play on the right. I think Giggs made a post not long ago too regarding the theory that Pep doesn't like Cancelo and Mahrez to play together on the right, and a game towards the end of last season where Cancelo played at RB but, instead of pulling into midfield like normal, he stayed out wide and overlapped the RW all game, that would suit Foden more who prefers to pull inside.

I see, thanks for the info! That could be enough to push me towards Martinelli (and ESR?), though I would be sad to lose the triple City attack.

Fixtures are great for all of your players in the first 7 weeks.
If Haaland can come close to matching Salah in those weeks then this team should score really well.

Yeah, just a big old gamble isn't it. How's your team looking? Usually pretty well-thought-out and unorthodox. Have you also succumbed to more template thinking this year or not started working on it yet?

Thinking is pretty similar to yours...big at the back and no Salah:

              Alisson
              TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
              Maddison, Kulusevski, Coutinho
              Haaland, Jesus

              Ramsey on the bench

Nice! I did have a draft with 5 8.0 mids in it. I would like them all, and think now is probably the best time to own Kulu. Not sure what the appeal of Coutinho is tbh, but I would still be scared of this team. Glad to see no Salah 😉

Thanks, not completely set on Coutinho but when he is at his best he looks unstoppable.
Alisson to Raya and Coutinho to Diaz is a possibility.
                  Good luck for the season!

I like seeing your differential teams Deulo, I normally take a fair few different turns from the template at the beginning and throughout the season but I too have found myself with a team that isn't far off of the template, there's just too much value in defensive options and, while there have been some stinkers, there are some good options up front I think. Are you worried at all about the possibility of both Foden and Mahrez vying for the RW spot or are you trying to put yourself in a position where you *should* have at least 1 starter out of those each week?

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

Hey Natedog, cheers. There are a bunch of cheaper defenders I'd really like to fit in, but the best teams have the best fixtures and we have the extra WC, which pushes us al to focus on those early fixtures. So I'm really looking forward to the first WC to try and do something more interesting haha. But that might suffer a bit from the same issue.

I think Foden should start most games, wherever there's a slot. Mahrez is someone who likes a goal off the bench, and if that's how they come, so be it. Should still get good mins with 5 subs.

(I don't buy that Pep will make few subs; knowing that the rule is changing, he'll look to capitalise on it like anyone else.)

I'm not sure why Foden would become a right-sided player tbh, but then I am not well-informed on the matter, so I will admit that. My team isn't extremely well-researched 😀
