With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

First up is five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman, who is now on board as Scout’s Deputy Editor.

... 2

After four days of price reveals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) opened its doors for the 2022/23 campaign on Tuesday.

So, in this, my first column of the new season, I thought I’d jot down some initial thoughts on strategy, plus teams/players that have caught my eye, and then build a very rough first draft based around that.

There are still just over four weeks to go until the season gets underway, and lots will change during that time, so I’m treating this as a kind of pre-season Watchlist that I can then develop.

SHORTER-TERM THINKING?

Firstly, the most important takeaway from Tuesday’s launch: Fantasy managers will get unlimited transfers during the six-week hiatus between Gameweeks 16 and 17, when the Premier League takes a break to accommodate the World Cup.

It’s effectively a third chance to completely overhaul your squad, as the two usual Wildcards remain in place.

As you have to use the first one by Gameweek 16, the season is almost split into quarters, which means I think we can afford to be a bit more aggressive and short-term with our initial picks.

This means I’m not really looking beyond Gameweek 6 for my initial set-up, as realistically, the latest I’ll use my first Wildcard – in between Gameweeks 8 and 9 – is the September international break.

As a result, I’m considering Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne (£5.0m) in an attempt to capitalise on those opening four fixtures against Bournemouth, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

By which point, he can then be moved onto someone in the £4.5m defender pool, a bracket I really like this year.

BEST £4.5M FPL DEFENDERS?

The £4.5m defender category is absolutely stacked with talent this year, and due to the kind pricing of the premium options, I feel it might be ignored.

And I like the idea of moving this spot around during the season to capitalise on certain fixture swings, with the names below all catching my eye over the past few days.

For example, James Justin (£4.5m) and Sven Botman’s (£4.5m) good runs start in Gameweek 6, while Vladimir Coufal’s (£4.5m) is a week later, something I touched on in my recent ‘When to best ‘hop on’ players with good fixtures’ article.

Lewis Dunk, Tariq LampteyBrighton and Hove Albion
Marc GuehiCrystal Palace
Timothy Castagne, James JustinLeicester City
Sven BotmanNewcastle United
Vladimir CoufalWest Ham United

CHELSEA‘S FPL ASSETS

Given that Chelsea have consistently been one of the best defences in the league under Thomas Tuchel, their assets feel a little under-priced this year. Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), plus both wing-backs at just £6.0m, could offer real value, even if the mooted switch to a back-four formation comes to fruition.

A lot will depend on recruitment and if they can successfully replace Antonio Rudiger, but if they can, a £5.0m starting ‘keeper from a Champions League-level defence feels like a sound investment, especially if you think they can improve on last season’s tally of 15 clean sheets.

The impact of a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation could also boost their attacking output, which is why I have included Mason Mount (£8.0m) in my first draft. However, if Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) completes his move from Manchester City, I have a feeling he could really shake things up, with the prospect of Raphinha (£7.0m) feeding him from the right-flank a mouthwatering one for FPL managers. In that scenario, the winger would almost certainly make it into my Gameweek 1 team.

BEST BUDGET FPL PICKS

So, it’s safe to say a lot will change between now and next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline, but isn’t it fun being back talking FPL again armed with all the info?

Also, a quick shout out to Pras and Andy, who made some really nice points in last night’s ‘How to build a first draft’ video, which I’ve linked below in case you missed it.

Trying to find the most balanced 15 possible, think this is a good first effort - unfortunately without Mo who'll no doubt punish us in GW1 if we don't own him.... One way to accommodate him would be Diaz & Kane > Mo & Mitrovic - after all, Kane never scores in August, right, and there are FIVE August GWs this year.

    Dubravka (Mendy)
    TAA Laporte Trippier Perisic (Tomiyasu)
    Kulusevski L Diaz Murphy/Neto (Rice)

Dubravka/Mendy makes no sense to me. Dubravka will likely, but not 100% certainly, be 2nd in line to Pope, and if you're getting Mendy I dont see any need for rotating 2nd keeper

Starting to think I might be able to go without James/Chilwell. Have Mendy in goal.

    A) James + Perisic + Martinelli
    B) Tomiyasu + Doherty + 8m mid

Already have Luis Diaz but like the idea of adding Foden or Mount.

The other way to upgrade Martinelli to an 8m mid would be Cancelo to Laporte and then either James to Gabriel or Perisic to Tomiyasu...

    My case for Grealish

From the off this season is going to be one of the most interesting seasons given that FIFA have slapped the World Cup in the middle of it.

With this in mind, many players will be wanting to ensure they have the best chance of securing a starting birth in their national side , as a result, there will be many fringe players wanting to ensure they get game time in the PL to ensure their fitness and chances of a World Cup spot.

I have noticed this already with the likes of Sterling, Aké and Pereira already on the move. The latter two are surely bargains with moves to Chelsea (potentially) and Fulham respectively.

So back to Jack Grealish, with Sterling on his way to Chelsea, his competition on the left flank will primarily be Foden, another player crucial to the England side this year.

So what about the right flank?

But Mahrez will play there I hear you say. He will play there yes but I'm going to make a bold speculation and say for the start of the season. He won't.

As Algeria have have not qualified for the World Cup he may sit back as an impact sub to allow those fighting for World Cup berths a chance.

A front three for City of Grealish, Haaland and Foden could be on the cards for the first half of the season at least.
    Anybody else going for Grealish?

that new guy Alvarez can also play on the left i believe

I dont think Mahrez and/or Pep cares about the chances of other players for the World cup tbh.

Mahrez like every other sane player just want to play and Pep just wants to put out the best team possible, regardless who it is at the time...

    4. Return Of Chamakh
      • 13 Years
      4 years, 12 days ago

This relies on Mahrez saying 'Hey I'm not playing the world cup this year, stick jack in and just use me as a sub!'
Which is not how team selection works in professional sport I'm afraid - it's down to Pep. And we know how hard it is to predict what he's doing...!

    5. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 12 days ago

I don't think it's bold to say Mahrez won't start the season as the first choice RW, we thought it would happen last season and Torres played there followed by two players that were moved out of their positions for that time (Jesus and Bernardo). Foden wants to play there too. I think Grealish will have a good season but honestly the WC isn't part of my reasoning. He simply looked more like the Grealish we saw at Villa in the last few weeks of the season and said himself he felt he was playing within himself for most of the season but he felt better at the end. City players tend to have much better second seasons too.

Somehow with premium options priced kindly, this feels even more unbalanced than before. But that's what first drafts are for:

Meslier | 4.0 (Darlow for now, but with Pope at NEW, I'll probably switch this to someone at least with half a shout of featuring)
    TAA - Cancelo - Reguilon - White - 4.0 (BWill)
    Son - Maddi - Ramsey - Norgaard - Murphy
    Haaland - Jesus - Darwin

    The midfield is...questionable, I know.

Hi guys, long time admirer, going to start to get stuck into some chat with you all now.

This is the first draft that I am half happy with.

    Mendy (Forster)
    TAA Tripper Cash Tomiyasu (Williams)
    Salah Neto Odegaard (Andreas, Colback)
    Kane Haaland Jesus

Happy with the cheap bench if their transfers go through. Not to keen on Colback so may look to replace him although he is 3rd choice sub currently anyway.

Quite like it considering all the points are up top, but I do think that the money you pay for premiums is often about the captaincy – and since you can only captain one (probably Salah), you might find better overall value by reducing 3 heavy strikers and bumping up Md/Df.

Also for me, Mendy slightly more than he's worth considering his previous season's points. Also in my team he'd block potential for 3x Che outfield, although you're clearly not backing Chelsea 😀

As a Spurs fan, ill probably end up captaining Kane for a fair bit. I just can't see any of the lower priced strikers getting as many goals as those three.

Mendy to me just looked like a cheap way of getting into the Chelsea back line. I did have James at one point but I think the likes of Trippier and Cash will provide good returns also. If anything I am missing out on City assets.

Diaz yes, Nunez no. I think he'll share minutes with Jota and maybe Firmino until he gets into the Klopp groove.

Even with his 75 + 25 transfer fee?
I think liverpool wants him to compete with haaland

they didn't spend 85m for Nunez to sit on the bench, more likely Diaz will share with Jota imo

Firmino and Jota will probably be impact subs or cup game players now

Nope, Jota and Firmino will get game time/some starts. I've got Diaz though, think the upside will be worth it.

    Ederson (Olsen)

TAA - James - Perisic - Trippier (Tomiyasu)

Salah - Sancho - Odegaard - Neto (Andreas)

Haaland - Jesus (Broja, assuming he gets a move - otherwise, Undav)

What do we reckon then folks?

Solid. I'd have Diaz in place of sancho

Do this midfield have too many punts?
    Fernandes, Diaz, Grealish, Rashford, Bailey

I'd have sufficient bench cover for two of them to not play.

Yeah, we don't know about Rashford and Bailey yet.

TAA, Robbo + Diaz plenty of Liverpool cover and Haaland / Kane for captaincy options.

2020 Fernandes for £10.0m would be insane. Just have to see how he plays under Ten Hag.

Grealish is going to be a big player for City this season. £7.0m is a steal even if he only plays 2500 minutes in total.

Far too many IMO. Bailey is injury prone and Villa have a lot of attacking options, Rashford has spent the last year looking like he has forgotten to do any of the basics let alone go any further than that, and even Bruno is a bit of ah unknown under ETH, I'm very unsure of how a player that is so suited to transitions is going to adapt to a team focused on possession or where he will play.

Do Villa have a lot of attacking options though? I only see 5 first team players fighting for 3 forward spots in their 4312.
        Watkins, Ings + Bailey = 2 fowards
        Coutinho + Buendia = 1 number 10

I think him having to displace any of those 4 (all of which are ahead of him now) and requiring a formation change to fully fit him in is too much. Not saying he can't be an option but I'm not really sure I see Gerrard looking to change his side that much, they've added Kamara and Diego Carlos (and permanently signed Coutinho) so far which to me looks like he wants to further cement and improve a side that plays in a fairly narrow and central manner

We view this differently. I see it as Bailey getting game time OOP as a striker in a front two. Watkins is the main man so Ings and Bailey will share gametime.

Settled on this for now. No spurs attack the only worry

    Mendy

    Taa - Perisic - Cancelo - Gabriel

    Salah - Diaz - ASM - Martinelli

    Haaland - Jesus

I am really not sure Perisic is going to play that much. Conte loves subbing his wingbacks and with Sessegnon in the background I think Perisic would be one of the first to make way.

Don't worry about what anyone else is doing, just pick the team and players that you think will do best. Easier said than done of course when looking at ownership and drafts here but there are always bandwagons with huge ownership every season that flop (Shaw last season and Werner the season before were I think 40%+ owned). It's just about backing yourself

He's 50% because of autopick, it is picking players between 5.5m and 9.5, I had him as well with my first squad. Yesterday he was 80%.

Thoughts on Doherty @ 5.0? Or is Djed Spence just gonna come straight into the starting xi with no premier league experience I think.

Doherty is going under the radar imo. What do you guys think?

Yeah can’t see that happening too. Think I should just wait for the pre season games then I would decide. It’s not as if Spence is at the club already but I fancy Conte’s defence this season. Think Lenglet is already having his medical at Spurs
