With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

First up is five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman, who is now on board as Scout’s Deputy Editor.

... 2

After four days of price reveals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) opened its doors for the 2022/23 campaign on Tuesday.

So, in this, my first column of the new season, I thought I’d jot down some initial thoughts on strategy, plus teams/players that have caught my eye, and then build a very rough first draft based around that.

There are still just over four weeks to go until the season gets underway, and lots will change during that time, so I’m treating this as a kind of pre-season Watchlist that I can then develop.

SHORTER-TERM THINKING?

Firstly, the most important takeaway from Tuesday’s launch: Fantasy managers will get unlimited transfers during the six-week hiatus between Gameweeks 16 and 17, when the Premier League takes a break to accommodate the World Cup.

It’s effectively a third chance to completely overhaul your squad, as the two usual Wildcards remain in place.

As you have to use the first one by Gameweek 16, the season is almost split into quarters, which means I think we can afford to be a bit more aggressive and short-term with our initial picks.

This means I’m not really looking beyond Gameweek 6 for my initial set-up, as realistically, the latest I’ll use my first Wildcard – in between Gameweeks 8 and 9 – is the September international break.

As a result, I’m considering Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne (£5.0m) in an attempt to capitalise on those opening four fixtures against Bournemouth, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

By which point, he can then be moved onto someone in the £4.5m defender pool, a bracket I really like this year.

BEST £4.5M FPL DEFENDERS?

The £4.5m defender category is absolutely stacked with talent this year, and due to the kind pricing of the premium options, I feel it might be ignored.

And I like the idea of moving this spot around during the season to capitalise on certain fixture swings, with the names below all catching my eye over the past few days.

For example, James Justin (£4.5m) and Sven Botman’s (£4.5m) good runs start in Gameweek 6, while Vladimir Coufal’s (£4.5m) is a week later, something I touched on in my recent ‘When to best ‘hop on’ players with good fixtures’ article.

Lewis Dunk, Tariq LampteyBrighton and Hove Albion
Marc GuehiCrystal Palace
Timothy Castagne, James JustinLeicester City
Sven BotmanNewcastle United
Vladimir CoufalWest Ham United

CHELSEA‘S FPL ASSETS

Given that Chelsea have consistently been one of the best defences in the league under Thomas Tuchel, their assets feel a little under-priced this year. Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), plus both wing-backs at just £6.0m, could offer real value, even if the mooted switch to a back-four formation comes to fruition.

A lot will depend on recruitment and if they can successfully replace Antonio Rudiger, but if they can, a £5.0m starting ‘keeper from a Champions League-level defence feels like a sound investment, especially if you think they can improve on last season’s tally of 15 clean sheets.

The impact of a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation could also boost their attacking output, which is why I have included Mason Mount (£8.0m) in my first draft. However, if Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) completes his move from Manchester City, I have a feeling he could really shake things up, with the prospect of Raphinha (£7.0m) feeding him from the right-flank a mouthwatering one for FPL managers. In that scenario, the winger would almost certainly make it into my Gameweek 1 team.

BEST BUDGET FPL PICKS

So, it’s safe to say a lot will change between now and next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline, but isn’t it fun being back talking FPL again armed with all the info?

Also, a quick shout out to Pras and Andy, who made some really nice points in last night’s ‘How to build a first draft’ video, which I’ve linked below in case you missed it.

          AVL, BHA, MCI, MUN, WHU…

What are your feelings on them?

And for reference, I don’t think it’s ‘FPL treatment’, the abbreviation used in Championship (often for televised games where they use three letters) was NFO too.
I guess it’s where you have multiple teams from same two /city so you can’t use NOT as that could be either Notts County or Nottingham Forest.

          See MCI/MUN above.
          Same city, same nomenclature format.

Thoughts on this no Salah draft?

    Meslier
    TAA(vc) Robertson Cancelo Laporte James
    Son(c) Diaz Foden
    Jesus Watkins
(Rodak, Andreas, Murphy, Greenwood) +0.5M itb

My thoughts are that the value is in defence and in being flexible with the 8M mids. Happy to captain Son most weeks, with TAA as vc. I don't trust some of the cheap picks yet such as Neto/Martinelli/Undav.

I think 5 top defenders is good in theory - the difficulty is the effect on your bench and what happens if say foden or James don't play or injuries etc. Good luck anyways

Yea the bench is a concern. Andreas should be nailed at Fulham, and if another 4.5 mid becomes nailed then it should be fine.

      It’s strong.
I’d be more concerned about missing Haaland than Salah.
As I think Diaz will come a lot closer to Salah than Foden will to Haaland.

Also, fwiw, I’d go Chilwell over Laporte. Same price, higher ceiling.

ESR and Rash are too punty for me with a weak bench, but they could be good. I don't see many reliable cheap mids around their prices though.

Trossard and JWP are two good mids in that bracket who are going to get criminally overlooked imo.

It's funny to me, I know Trossard and JWP could get 150points or over for the season, but I just can't put them in, not even now when I'm making 100's of changes. They're just too dull!

I dont like it tbh. Half your mids are likely to be on the bench. Tomiyasu seems more nailed than White. Dont see much appeal in Lloris at same price as Ederson/Alisson

Not seeing a lot of Robbo, Son and Wilson on here. Powerful differentials.

I don't like Lloris as a pick. Same price as Alisson, Ederson and Perisic. More expensive than Doherty and Mendy.

ESR was behind Martinelli end of last season. Rashford punt looks like fun if he seems likely to start.

Early days but starting to feel like going with Kulusevski as Spurs cover is a bit foolish. They've spent a lot of money on Richarlison and Kulusevski did probably play a lot more than Conte would have liked ideally last season, given he arrived having played very little football in Turin in recent seasons and his age. I can work Kane in but it means I'm playing 5-3-2 every week and have a garbage bench and I'm not doing that, I need some flexibility. But I feel like I will be setting myself up for a transfer out if I go down that road and having added uncertainty isn't helpful with already having players like Grealish there, along with Jesus and Haaland who will both get benched here and there. While if I stretch to Bowen I'd be a lot more likely to just stick with him for a fair while, he showed last season hes fixture-proof and he won't be rotated. It pretty much has to be Son or Kane, or Romero if you want reliable defensive cover, right?

I'm looking at the idea of downgrading a defender but I'm just not sure it's worth it. Cancelo and Chilwell, no. TAA I didn't plan on assuming he'd be far more than 7.5 (and 1m more than Robbo) but I have to take him at that price and with Nunez there I expect him to do even better. Tomiyasu is too good value and if he's a non-runner there's Fofana or others at 4.5. Even Trippier at 5m, downgrading for .5 just feels silly given the fixtures and what he's capable of. So if you're going Salah + Haaland and a solid defence (even with one 4.5m), are Spurs simply a no-go?

I'm going Kulu at the moment. Seems low risk with Richarlison suspended GW1. And I have the price point prepared. If any of the City mids/Mount/Saka hit the ground running it's a simple switch.

Kulu has the best fixture in GW1 though and is the most nailed so I'm happy to start with him.

I also think Doherty at 5.0m if he continues where he left off pre-injury last year is great value. If indications pre-season are that he starts at RWB, he's in.

I think that's my worry, that I'll feel like I'm essentially getting him for just GW1 with a view to swapping him to a superior option and I'm trying to prevent myself from looking at the short-term (and thus eventually taking more hits). I will keep an eye on Doherty, I feel there is a chance he will get 2/3 games and that might be enough but there are so many other good options around that I'm sure I'll still be hesitant

I like Kulu well enough. He's performed so well. I can't really see him being dropped immediately for Richarlison. And yeah, the price point is really nice. If it somehow becomes very clear that Foden/Mahrez are gonna start every week, I'll probably just start with triple City.

another tick in the BB-WC box - Kulu GW1 looks nice, but then there are a few 8.0s I'd prefer afterwards (mainly City mids) - the Spurs wingbacks are going to be pretty good until rotation starts (Europe) - assuming he's no.1 Doherty will probably cream Tomiyasu for 0.5 more

I can understand the idea but I just don't think BBGW1 is for me, I managed to do pretty well with it last season (156pts on the DGW everyone TC'd Salah) and the week after the WC might be a tempting time

I'm also unsure how Richarlison will fit in, and have a feeling that Kulusevski might have overperformed & raised unrealistic expectations. Is this enough to tempt you back to Son/Diaz over Salah/Kulu?

Diaz is in. I'm not gonna second guess myself. He is clearly underpriced imo. So I'm gonna trust that instinct. I didn't trust that instinct a few years ago when Son was 9m and then again last year when he was 10m. I'm trusting it this year.

It might do. Honestly I had no intentions of reverting to Salah but him.signing a new contract is a game changer IMO. I'd be more likely to go with Kane than Son right now, I'm certainly not underestimating Son as he's as consistent as you can get, but at 12m without penalties (and perhaps the possibility of him losing setpieces with a specialist joining Spurs given he's pretty poor at them) the value of him as a pick is tougher to derive

Kane is certainly more generously priced this time. But I still feel Son will outscore him so I don't mind paying the extra 0.5 my captaincy option

This is definitely going to be the big choice I will have to make in the next month. I was so sure before last week I wouldn't get Salah despite leaving myself open to any changes if they seemed necessary and now here I am!

I'm still unsure whether to go big hitters or all-round squad - I tend to lean to all-round squad but this works some years and not others, I can remember a couple of occasions last season where my bench outscored the rest of my team... But for now I've got:

    Ramsdale (Henderson)
    James, Gabriel, Chilwell, Laporte (Neco)
Maddison, Bowen, Kulu (VC), Bernardo, Saka
    Haaland (C) (Johnson, Mitrovic).

None from Liverpool which could be costly but the whole midfield can score double figures, Haaland has "OK" back-up and defence pretty strong... Salah's hat-trick in gameweek 1 will no doubt sting. :p

there is nothing wrong with your idea of a balanced squad, although some of your players seem unnecessary like Bernardo, and a 5m goalie with a 4.5 one, and a bit of an expensive for the bench like Mitro, a bit of creative accounting and you'd be able to say partner Haaland with Nunez in a 442 and still have a balanced squad with some decent bench cover

    442

    Raya - 4.0

    Haaland - Wilson - 4.5

Kulu was quality last season, all of the front three will have less minutes this season. Perisic and Kulu for me as like you say with Salah Haaland and a solid defence you can't have them all.

    I'm currently on,

    Mendy
    TAA Cancelo Perisic Tomiyasu
    Salah Kulu Raphina* Neto
    Haaland Jesus
    4.0 Andreas Botman Greenwood

Displaying more than 5 GWs at a time appears to be members area ticker only, like sorting by difficulty now is. You can however scroll to future GWs using the bar under the sidebar ticker.

What's the goalkeeping situation at Brighton and Brentford? Are Steele and Balcombe likely to be the #2s or is there business to be done?

Another season with Sanchez and Steele on the cards?

    1. Andy_Social

Steele's only ever played one match. They usually get a better cover.

But they were happy to cash in on Button and Ryan because Steele is pretty solid.

        He’s firmly my 4.0

Is he solid though? Was it last season or the one before, Steele was 3rd choice and they got a Belgian (?) in.

    Current Draft:

    Lloris
    TAA Walker Trippier
    Bruno Diaz Martinelli Neto
    Kane Haaland Jesus

    Forster N.Williams Paterson Pereira

Will assess over pre-season whether the subs will become options. Feel Spurs WB’s will be rotated a fair bit, hence going for Lloris.
