Having already provided the lowdown on Steve Cooper, our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at Nottingham Forest’s defence.

In this article, we will assess the Championship play-off winners’ overall clean sheet chances and then look at some of the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players in their backline.

Our third and final piece will discuss Forest’s midfielders and forwards.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

You can find everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth here.

The stats in this piece are taken from FotMob and WhoScored.

WHAT IS FOREST’S CLEAN SHEET POTENTIAL?

Nottingham Forest's defence assessed ahead of FPL return in 2022/23

Forest had the second-best defensive record in the Championship last season, conceding 40 goals in 46 matches, only trailing Bournemouth (39).

They kept 17 clean sheets, a reasonable return but some way short of the Cherries’ league-leading total of 21.

However, it’s worth noting that at the time of Cooper’s appointment in September, Forest had made their worst start to a season for 108 years, claiming only a single point from their first seven Championship games under Chris Hughton, a period that saw them concede 12 goals.

When he was first appointed, Cooper was flexible in his approach, switching from a back four and a central-defensive trio. But this year (see below), it has largely been a back three all the way, which has seen Forest tighten up significantly and concede only five goals at the City Ground in 2022.

Away11533127+5185

“Once Cooper arrived and certainly in 2022, Forest were the best defensive side in the Championship. The trio of Worrall, McKenna and Steve Cook earned the collective nickname of “The Wall” to emphasise just how effective they were at keeping teams at bay. At the City Ground in particular, Forest conceded just five goals in 2022 and were known for their ability to limit teams to half chances.” – Mark Sutherns

The underlying stats don’t really do Forest justice, given that they are skewed due to their poor start under Hughton, but we’ll include them below for reference.

Williams is the only one I'll consider to sit on the bench. With Spence going and Forest making a lot of signings, could go tits up (Fulham a few years ago)

So United are trying to steal Lisandro Martinez behind Arsenal's back.

He really should go to Arsenal if he want's to achieve anything in English football.

They have. Whoever occupies the musical chairs, United persistently tries to low-ball deals and loses key targets to other sides who play less bolshily (if that's a word).

Regarding Liverpool assets here are my thoughts:

Salah - Nailed and likely to be the highest scoring by far again.

Diaz - The Mane replacement. If Mane had been more kindly priced we would never have thought twice about doubling with Salah. He’s only competing with Jota who Klopp seems to prefer in the middle now.

Nunez - The new Firmino. He’s largely going to ply down the middle. Great differential but may take some time to be eased in. Price is a bit awkward flexibility wise too.

Jota - Will rotate with Nunez and/or Diaz but I see him easing Nunez in and acting as an impact sub. We may see both Diaz and Nunez getting 60 mins. Hopefully he’ll play more cup games.

Firmino - on his way out. Will probably play cup games and have the odd cameo.

Trent - As close to essential as you can get.

Robbo - Double with Trent but don’t get him instead of Trent.

In summary, the best two options are Salah, Diaz, Trent or Salah, Robbo, Trent. The first one provides more flexibility with the myriad 8m mids and the latter is probably higher scoring if you made no transfers all season.

I don't think anyone can reasonably disagree. It's a clear case of Salah, Trent and one of Robbo or Diaz.

While I broadly agree with the above, I don't think the conclusion is so clear cut. With new signings & generous pricing, I think there's a really wide range of Liverpool combos that could do well this season. I also suspect that the points might be more spread, and Salah's goal involvement % may come out lower than Håland/Son/Kane

VVD 1 mill cheaper than Trent with 183pts to Trent’s 208?

What if Klopp changes formation/system and asks his wing backs to do more defending?

        • 12 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

No one is essential. I said he’s as close to it as you can get. He’s a consistently high scoring defender that will outscore all of the 8m mids for only 7.5m.

I get your point but all defenders would win a similar argument. A 4.5 defender should outscore all 5.0 mids. I think Trent is a fantastic option but same can be said for heaps of the defenders in the game.

I have seen suggestions that Klopp may test out a 4231 with Firmino as a 10. I'm not sure if it's true and I do think it's likely he'll mostly be a rotational option, but last season was certainly skewed with Jota's form and Firmino's fitness issue. Klopp is a huge Firmino fan and knows that there are very few players in the game like him and that without him, Salah and Mane wouldn't have been as potent over the years. So I'm not too sure, he's a very different option to Jota and Nunez so I'm not entirely sure just yet that he'll be on his way out.

Interesting perspective, agreed that he’s been very unselfish and enabled Salah and Mane a lot in the past.

Yeah, that's true. I've toyed with Salah, TAA and either VVD or Alisson just to save a bit of money, but I keep coming back to Robbo or Diaz.

I'm on Alison, TAA, Salah at present. I am tempted by Diaz, but with Nunez, Jota and Firminho he may not be as nailed or prolific as Mane was.

Agree with all of this and also currently on those three (see below). I'm toying with this draft which I hope could just about pay off until the first WC.

            Alisson
            TAA, Chilwell, Perisic, Laporte, Tomiyasu
            Salah, Martinelli, Neto
            Kane, Haaland

Looks good to me, I've gone Jesus over Kane at present and upgraded elsewhere with the Kane money

              Alisson
              TAA Chilwell Perisic Cancelo Gabriel
              Salah Saka Neto
              Haaland Jesus

              Andreas Greenwood Reed

Looks good, I'm torn between the two, for me comes down to:

                A) Kane, Laporte, Tomiyasu, Alisson (Salah, Haaland, Kane)
                B) Jesus, Diaz, Cancelo, Henderson (Salah, Haaland)

On the face of it, the compromises to bring Kane in really don't seem too scary compared to the equivalent in previous seasons.

Yeah I've been thinking along the same lines, the compromises are not too bad. I'm not sure about going without Cancelo though. Martinelli could well be heavily rotated too with the number of options they have in mid now

                  Alisson Gabriel Saka Jesus
                  Raya Tomiyasu Martinelli Kane

My quick thoughts (I like the look of Salah, TAA and Allisson):

      - Salah is just a no-brainer for me, not going to tempt myself with 'how good' the rest of the Team looks. Have tried a few times going without Salah and it just doesn't work
      - TAA is a lock-in for me, not much to say
      - Diaz in isolation looks great value for 8.0 but surely his minutes are going to be managed. For such a high-performing Team I think it's critical to have 3 starters
      - Robertson & VVD - with the 0.5M spare I think I prefer VVD to Robertson - with Tsimikas' performances last season, is it not reasonable to suggest Robertson may be rested against some weak opposition?
      - Allisson - someone performed a PPG analysis on Allisson vs. Diaz and the numbers were very, very similar. Of course he has a much lower ceiling, but obviously he is nailed. I like Mendy @ 5.0 but don't like the double up with Chilwell/James. I don't fancy the 4.5 options to score very well

      1. Tomerick
        • 12 Years

All fair points. I don’t see Tsimikas stealing too many starts from Robertson. They surely go all out for the title this season.

It depends on your team as a whole.... clearly Martinelli is the best from that bunch but if you already have two Arsenal players....

      1. Nomar
        • 16 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

Arsenal midfield is a minefield now, though. Who do you know is going to start every week?

Martinelli is battling ESR, who actually outscored him last season.

That’s what concerns me about him. Bruno G May get subbed off early, but I’m pretty confident that I won’t be sitting nervously by my tablet on Saturday afternoon waiting to see if he’s in the starting eleven,

Neto could be pants, but he’s a starter with decent early fixtures and there are other players who will undoubtedly emerge from that 5-6m bracket that we can jump on once they identify themselves.

        1. WVA
          • 9 Years
          4 years, 13 days ago

Martinelli was/is clearly ahead of ESR by the end of last season which was mind boggling considering ESR'S form and frustrating as i owned him lol

Yep agree re Bruno G after last season he will definitely start off the season as first choice and Newcastle should be decent.

Neto and Wissa maybe. Bruno G unlikely to be as attacking/overperforming this year and am not sure about the Martinelli love; is he really nailed? Had him at the end of last year (after hus purple patch) and he did bugger all for me.

What are the lowest ownership figures you have in your squad currently? I have 3 under 5%, 2.6% (Meslier), 1.2% (Olise) and 4.9% (Wilson).

          3rd.

I actually like him as a playing option too.

Main two strikers are Haaland and Toney.

If only Rondon wasn’t suspended for the first 2 games he’d be excellent 3rd striker material at £5m. Guaranteed minutes now Everton only have DCL as their other striker.

If Leeds can go back to defence of 2 years ago then yes.

He’s got good early fixtures too and he is a save magnet.

Talk to me about this because I’m currently on Sanchez and Steele, but I’m very interested in a Meslier Klaesson double up.

Why should I go the Leeds route instead of Brighton?

What are the arguments for Jesus over Saka?

Saka is completely nailed, is likely on penalties, knows the team well, and scored great last year. Gets more for goals + CS points. And they are the same price.

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 13 days ago

1)People's perception that Jesus has been underpriced
      2) Saka has more competition from similar priced mids than Jesus does Vs similar priced forwards

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

        this.

If I didn't have Jesus, I'd struggle to choose a second striker. Not that comfortable with him, in fact.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 13 days ago

Same, he's kinda there by default at the minute

      2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years

I think this is spot on and shows we've been looking at Jesus as a better option from a structural viewpoint rather than for typical FPL reasons. I think we'll see games where Jesus may play at RW and Saka will get rests but similarly I expect Nketiah to get a decent few starts this season and Jesus to get rotated. So overall really I'd imagine Saka should be the better option.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 13 days ago

Very true, he's there structurally for sure. He undoubtedly improves arsenal but fpl wise I'm not sure he'll be better than saka or even martinelli if he can stay fit and have a big season

    2. Nomar
      • 16 Years
      4 years, 13 days ago

Agree, but he’s £8m now which makes it harder to crowbar him into your midfield, especially if you’re, rightly, spending top money on defenders.

Jesus is a realistically gettable 2nd striker, but his inability to finish makes me wary of paying £8m for him. I’m actually more comfortable with Toney in that spot as he’s nailed, on pens and can finish chances.

I’m also trying to discipline myself not to get an Arsenal mid just for getting an Arsenal mid’s sake. Unless it’s the right one (Saka, imo) I am looking at other nailed options.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

Agree, and this comes back to structure. Part of my thinking is if Jesus disappoints, I can exchange him for Toney or a 7.5 forward.

        1. Nomar
          • 16 Years
          4 years, 13 days ago

I also think Palace might surprise people on the Friday night season opener and frustrate Arsenal.

They have great fixtures and until Jesus signed I was all excited and determined to have NKetiah as my second striker.

The Jesus signing has changed all that though. At the moment I kind of feel like it’s Saka or nothing. Odegaard possibly, Martinelli possibly, but right now those two just feel like I’m putting Arsenal mids in for the sake of having an Arsenal mid.

Also did a draft with Jesus, but found I was much happier with Toney there instead.

I have Tomiyasu, who I might upgrade to Gabriel, as I have £0.5 ITB, but that’s my only Arsenal at the moment.

Team structure, which is very important, can see Jesus starting off really well but over the season I see them scoring very similar points. Jesus is completely nailed too, i've been informed Saka is not first choice pen taker, Martinelli at least is ahead of him.

Hard to say tbh, also bought Vieira who could eat into ESRs and Martinelllis minutes, although could play deeper alongside Partay

Sakas last 3 seasons have been 71, 114, 179 - so i do think Saka could get higher than the suggested 180 you mention.

Where as ESR could be undroppable and Martinelli could be the one benched - sorry for the rubbish answer, but a great question though haha

with Jesus can play on the right too, Saka will be subbed more this season (Jesus right, Nketiah up top)

Arteta loves Saka. Saka is brilliant. He scored 70 more points than Marti last year. I am gutted he is 8, but he is worth the extra money if you have to have one.

Didnt he play like 1000 more minutes than Martinelli before Martinelli became first choice

ESR was un-droppable (scoring in every game) and Arteta still dropped him for Martinelli

    Haaland, Kane, Mitrovic

    (Steffen, Tomyasu, White, Colback).

Thoughts on this Salah-less draft? Tempted to punt on Bruno especially if Cr7 leaves

    Taa Cancelo Perisic James Tomiyasu

    Kane Haaland

    4.0 Perreira Da Silva Taylor

It could work, monitor Rashford in preseason. There's potential for him to play up top if Cristiano leaves.

Salah and Rashford over Bruno and Diaz could be an option if so. Although that could be 0.5 more I think

it seems every season a crap pick becomes a bandwagon on here in preseason/price release and then scores really well in the first few gameweeks, only to revert back to being turd

uncanny the amount of luck this pick gets early on - Neto is destined to score big in the first two weeks; probably a tap-in, deflected 25-yarder and an assist from a 5-yard pass to Neves, max bonus points 😀

Wolves scored 38 goals last season 😆

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 13 days ago

Wolves are crap but no reason they can't improve, Neto however if anyone has watched him and still doesn't rate him then I guess we'll have to politely agree to disagree because I think he's a top young talent

Neto was in my team from the start, great fixtures, but i downgraded to defence to afford Grealish. Neto, good player in a bad team, be different if Jimmy got back to himself - which i hope he does

I remember Doosra touting a 5.5 midfielder a few years ago. Similar comments about being unproven blah blah. I stuck him in and he went onto win the PL.

It is a Neto, Mwepu, Wissa lottery when all are fit. I think there will be a lot of bouncing in this area.

Credit for varying your point from the bot-like identical posts that appear every hour on FFS. The ones that are like, 'Am I missing something? Why all the love for Neto? He's hopeless lol lol lol'? Never the same language for any other player. Weird.

I'm pretty sure NO ONE who picks Neto does so because they "love" him. He's simply as a convenient price with convenient fixtures early on and enables better players to be picked elsewhere. There's no other midfielder priced 5.5 or below who guarantees starts and is offensive. Andreas might come into that category soon, and many like myself will probably have both on our squads.

Personally, I'm waiting to see if one of the Crystal Palace 5.5s emerges as a regular starter and for them to get their early bad fixtures out of the way before moving Neto on. He's due to spend most GWs on my bench anyway before that point.

I kinda like Wissa, honestly Neto is a great player in a turgid team; I can see the case for and against picking him, but mainly that Wolves hardly score goals; just pointing out players like Benrahma (who I personally believed to be a bad pick) suddenly smash it when it feels like everyone on here owns him - it's frustrating haha

I liked Wissa but Eriksen going made me change to Neto. Wolves not being a scoring team made me punt on Grealish

But if Jimmy starts firing in preseason Neto could be a great pick
