With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar, who will be writing for us every Gameweek throughout the season.

The 2022/23 season kicks off in under a month and, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) launching last week, managers are already examining the price list and fixture schedule to see if they can gain an edge. In this article, I will be sharing my very early thoughts on the season ahead, alongside my first draft.

Chip strategy and short-term planning

Everything you need to know about the FFS World Cup of FPL

The first thing to catch everyone’s eye is the unlimited post-World Cup transfers, heading into Gameweek 17. This effectively means that you have three Wildcards for the first half of the season – initial team, first Wildcard chip and Gameweek 17. So managers can be more aggressive early on.

One of the most annoying things about the Bench Boost chip is having to carry money on your bench in subsequent weeks. Previously, the only time you could use it in the same week as unlimited transfers was Gameweek 1, where those wanting to delay their first Wildcard could be restricted by this bench cash when chasing early bandwagons.

Now, you can effectively plan a Gameweek 1 Bench Boost and swiftly use the first Wildcard, knowing that there will also be unlimited transfers in December.

Alternatively, your first Wildcard could build towards a Bench Boost in Gameweek 16, before using unlimited transfers to assign more money to your first XI.

Using a Bench Boost in the first half of the season gives flexibility when building your team in the second half. You can Wildcard a strong XI on the week of a big Double, rather than using it just beforehand. I am really not a fan of the chip and am therefore tempted to get rid of it early.

In terms of fixture swings, I have not yet found any real standouts as we had around Gameweek 8 of last season. But the World Cup transfers provide an opportunity to attack the short-term matches.

European congestion

Another consequence of a winter World Cup is that the Champions League group stage is being squeezed into a much shorter window. To illustrate this, Holly Shand has produced this excellent image.

Every midweek from Gameweek 4 has either a league outing, European fixture or international break just days later. This fixture pile-up will definitely require rotation from continental competitors.

Is ‘big at the back’ a trap?

I don't think this tactic will fail if you remain patient and stick with those assets even when you want upgrades in midfield or attack. But this is hard, especially at the start of the season when people are chasing price rises and love to jump on a bandwagon.

Don't act like Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Cancelo, James, Chilwell aren't phenomenal players who can all get 180+ points if they stay fit and play part in 34 games or more.

If you got big at the back patience is key. You can be chopping and changing so I think if you stick with it and the defender perform how they have you're in for a consistent year (at the very least)

I think the big at the back thing lacks flexibility. Considering it is for the first 6 game weeks for most. Why make your options less flexible within that small timeframe. 4-3-3 is the way to go for me.

Not expecting it to massively fail.

But I am expecting it to show more potential later on in the season compared with at the start.

I think from GW1 a bit more money in excellent, trustworthy picks in midfield and up front (Saka, Diaz, Jesus etc.) will be useful, and some of that can be shifted towards the back once we learn who the cheaper bandwagons are and which wingbacks are worth having.

Considering putting less in defence to start with but moving to a stronger defence on wildcard personally.

      (Trent still a lock though)

Rotations were always a thing in FPL. Don't know why everyone mentioning that every time. Forever and ever in world of football, the only one who rotate less than 5 times during the year is goalkeeper. That's a most simple logic from 2 centuries ago.

Don't like this 3 fodder players on the bench, with the fixture schedule so crammed I think the first sub needs to be decent even if you have to spend 0.5m more on them. There will always be some player yellow flagged in your team between gameweeks and I would rather pay more for a decent first sub than risk fielding 10 or wasting a transfer on every 75% fit player

I'm between saving 0.5 ITB with a fodder bench, upgrading Neco to Lamptey, or Raya to Mendy. Don't see any 5.0 mids or forwards worth much.

Is that the Kane does not score in August myth? Kane will likely have one of his best sessions as Ricarlison is now an option to give him a rest. Instead of running Kane into the ground.

Kane's stats relative to his game time and price aren't that great.

Of the premiums above 10.0 only Bruno Fernandes scores less points per 90

Even when considering he's cheaper than Salah & Son his points relative to price is worse than both of those by a fair bit

    Thanks @Zophar, great article

If I read the article and the comments here I wonder if it's not the 5 at the back that fail, but more our assumption on the World Cup WC. Won't we all have players that are not going to Qatar in GW 16 and won't we still focus on those who didn't go further than the QF? I would definitely like to avoid players that have been in the semis in my GW17 squad

So you can do all that with the unlimited transfers.
I'm with Zophar's draft all the way until Mitrovic. Turn him into Martinelli and you're close to my 5-3-2 draft.

    My fave draft so far:

    Raya

    Tomiyasu / TAA / Cancelo / Perisic

    Salah / Kulu / Diaz / Neto

    Haaland / Jesus

    Bench: Balcombe / N Williams / Pereira / Greenwood

Pretty template. I am tempted to switch Diaz for ASM and upgrade Tomiyasu for James but not sure 100% which option is better

This is very good! If Doherty becomes nailed you can have this team which I think is the best that can be done at the moment.

Chelsea, Pool, City, Spurs and Arsenal def
Salah and two 8m mids which is probably the best price point this season
      Haaland and Jesus up top

      Mendy
      TAA Cancelo Doherty Tomiyasu
      Salah Kulu Diaz Neto
      Haaland Jesus

Surprisingly it is. I wasn’t interested but got it done eventually.

You just have to enable 2-factor on the fpl website. Download a 2-factor authentication app & then scan your fpl code. Really easy.

Thank you and sorry for the silly questions but is the authentication app linked to your phone? What happens if you lose your phone, for example? Are you then unable to access your FPL account from another device?

No problem buddy. I wasn’t interested at first because we have to download an app but I don’t think it is linked to your phone.

I use the google authenticator app so I think it’s linked to your google account & it’s not a silly question, I am not sure as well lol.

I do yeah. I don't need Conte's eyes to see the gulf in quality between him & Emerson, and Spence would get eased in gradually I expect. Some rumours about Doherty being for sale doing the rounds but sources don't seem super-reliable & are full of errors (like the original article claiming Conte signed Emerson)

    Raya - Balcombe
    TAA - Cancelo - Cash - Tomiyasu - N. Williams
    Salah - Mount - Diaz - Neto - Andreas
    Kane - Jesus - Greenwood
0.5 in the bank for bandwagons. Planning Kane->Haaland like a few others for GW2.

Not sure I get the lack of love for Nunez at £9.0m in that LIV team... Maybe if he arrived in Jan, starts would be a tad more scarce, but with a full pre-season, is he not now the no 1 no 9?

Built my first non big at the back draft and have to say I'm relatively pleased with the results. Just so tough to go without City/Chelsea defence if they begin highly owned.

    Haland - Vardy - Jesus
