With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar, who will be writing for us every Gameweek throughout the season.

The 2022/23 season kicks off in under a month and, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) launching last week, managers are already examining the price list and fixture schedule to see if they can gain an edge. In this article, I will be sharing my very early thoughts on the season ahead, alongside my first draft.

Chip strategy and short-term planning

Everything you need to know about the FFS World Cup of FPL

The first thing to catch everyone’s eye is the unlimited post-World Cup transfers, heading into Gameweek 17. This effectively means that you have three Wildcards for the first half of the season – initial team, first Wildcard chip and Gameweek 17. So managers can be more aggressive early on.

One of the most annoying things about the Bench Boost chip is having to carry money on your bench in subsequent weeks. Previously, the only time you could use it in the same week as unlimited transfers was Gameweek 1, where those wanting to delay their first Wildcard could be restricted by this bench cash when chasing early bandwagons.

Now, you can effectively plan a Gameweek 1 Bench Boost and swiftly use the first Wildcard, knowing that there will also be unlimited transfers in December.

Alternatively, your first Wildcard could build towards a Bench Boost in Gameweek 16, before using unlimited transfers to assign more money to your first XI.

Using a Bench Boost in the first half of the season gives flexibility when building your team in the second half. You can Wildcard a strong XI on the week of a big Double, rather than using it just beforehand. I am really not a fan of the chip and am therefore tempted to get rid of it early.

In terms of fixture swings, I have not yet found any real standouts as we had around Gameweek 8 of last season. But the World Cup transfers provide an opportunity to attack the short-term matches.

European congestion

Another consequence of a winter World Cup is that the Champions League group stage is being squeezed into a much shorter window. To illustrate this, Holly Shand has produced this excellent image.

Every midweek from Gameweek 4 has either a league outing, European fixture or international break just days later. This fixture pile-up will definitely require rotation from continental competitors.

Is ‘big at the back’ a trap?

No Robbo/TAA would bother me. I'd downgrade one of the 8.0 mids too for flexibility.

Two 8m mids is enough to start with I think.... Cancelo is a much better option than Foden.

Don’t bother with Balcombe - was third choice before today. Plus at some point you might want Dasilva and Toney.

Brentford set to complete club record signing of Keane Lewis-Potter today. £16million + £4million add-ons. Personal terms close. Club hopeful he can join German pre-season camp on Wednesday.

Thomas Strakosha close to signing as #2 to David Raya, who is in talks over new deal.

No idea 'bout the first guy, but the second is pertinent to many of us. Drama over.

seems like a very strange bit of businessing this... a lot of cash to be putting on the bench which could certainly be used and noticed elsewhere on the pitch.

Marks out of 10 for this differential draft amigos?

    Ederson
    Trent, Chilwell, Romero, Tomiyasu, Neco
    Salah, Maddison, Saka
    Kane, Vardy
    (Caballero, Andreas, Lavia, Greenwood)

That front 5 is incredible, I'd say all you need to do is downgrade Ederson and get Cancelo Over Chilwell.

Or Romero to Cancelo by Saka to Marty.
But it's very impressive esp with Vardy, there.

Cheers. It was Henderson in goal but Neco has taken the Forest spot.
I reckon Chilwell + Ederson will score more than Cancelo + 4.5 before the World Cup

Is this currently the best all round team? 442.

Mendy (Nice mid price point for goalkeepers and covers Chelsea defence)
TAA Cancelo (Essential) Doherty Tomiyasu (Hopefully Doherty nails down his spot, 4.5m route into Arsenal defence)
Salah (Essential) Diaz Kulu (Two 8m mids) Neto (Annoyingly cant get to Martinelli but some really good options at 5.5 this season)
    Haaland Jesus (Speaks for itself)
Andreas Williams (Look like great bench options)

Seen a little thing on twitter about a trio perfect for rotation. Anyone fancy it?

    Tomiyasu, Neto and Wissa.
GW1: Start: Tom (cry) & Neto (lee) - Bench: Wissa (lei)
GW2: Tom (LEI) & Neto (FUL) - Wissa (MUN)
GW3: Tom (bou) & Wissa (ful) - Neto (tot)
GW4: Tom (FUL) & Wissa (EVE) - Neto (NEW)
GW5: Wissa (cry) & Neto (bou) - Tom (AVL)
GW6: Wissa (LEE) & Neto (SOU) - Tom (mun)
GW7: Tom (EVE) & Wissa (sou) - Neto (liv)
GW8: Tom (bre) & Wissa (ARS) - Neto (MCI)

    GW1-8: 14 fixtures vs 'bottom 8'
    5 Fixutres vs promoted teams
1 Fixture vs top 6 team

Thought it was quite good, opens up possibility of maybe 2 8 midfielders??

Any other 7 or 6.5 to replace him?

Anyone think that Rashford will be a starter for Man U this season?

    Or like this:

    A: Rashford + Martinelli

    C) Bowen + Andreas Pereira

I've been tinkering a lot and finally found a structure that is somewhat settled, with a gap in the middle currently filled by Martinelli and Bailey but subject to change.

    4.5, 4.0
    TAA, Cancelo, Jonny, Tomiyasu, N.Williams
    Salah, Diaz, [Martinelli, Bailey], Andreas
    Kane, Haaland, 4.5

With Arsenal and Wolves high on the fixture ticker, I really like the 4.5 defs here. I fully expect to WC into a two premium setup with a stronger defence, but the extra wildcard allows me to attack early with Kane while LIV, MCY, TOT all have good fixtures and settle into a more long-term structure when needed.

If Bailey is a no-go, he can become Foden, Martinelli can become Neto and Cancelo can become Castagne, or something similar.

Any general comments? And any ideas for those two floating midfield spots?

Part of the problem is picking the right blimming one in the first place. Look at last season... all jumped on Benhrama, who flopped, and was completely outdone by Bowen

          Eventually

I was Barnes and Buendia here. *vomit*

I wouldn’t say he flopped. People who started with Antonio and Benrahma were bang on but you don’t pick a GW1 team for the full season and you rightly jump off them when the time is right.

Well, one way of doing it is lining up the players by price and looking for the classy attacking player who will play enough minutes. For example, my take on it for midfielders is:

            £5.5m: Olise
£6.0m: Smith-Rowe (although don't think the 6.0m are that good overall)
            £6.5m: JWP
            £7m - £7.5m: Zaha
            £8m - £8.5m: Diaz

Those 8m midfielders are very good players IMO. But most are priced on having good seasons LTO. And last season's bargains are rarely next season's bargains. Diaz seems underpriced because Mane (his direct competition) has left.

I just watched Rashford score two goals in a training match so now he's essential in my mind.

If Rashford is given a fresh start and gets his confidence back, he could be one of the most underpriced players in FPL history. He has the ability to score 15 PL goals IMO. I don't think you can say that about others priced at 6.5m or less.

    Unpopular opinion

Arsenal "bargain" defence. First, it's Arsenal

White and Tomiyasu are immensely dull picks at 1,2-6 points, if you're lucky

Especially 33yo Perisic who has been in many teams, very stupid idea to go with him when Trippier is cheaper option.

I think Perisic will play more CL and less PL and I think there’s real danger him collecting 1 pointers. I may be wrong and just pick him but prepare that he will be saved for CL games.

Trippier is good for gw 1 then needs to go.

Romero from Spurs could be decent, or if a nailed rb is established for 5 mil (Spence)

        5.5 seems pricey for Perisic

One issue with the 5 at the back is that those 4th and 5th slot defenders actually cost 0.5 more than their ticket value, owing to bench midfielders/strikers costing 0.5 more than bench defenders. But I still see more value in the expensive defensive assets than the midfielders and strikers that cost 0.5 more.

I know value has to be taken into account but purely from a captain perspective:

Salah & Son we’re WAY ahead of any other play last season for points tally, 3rd best Trent scored 50 points less than Son.

Can’t help but back these as my 2 premiums for now.
Liverpool & Spurs rotate nicely too in terms of Home & Away.

The issue with Son is him being "too fixture proof". Predicting Son's hauls is difficult, because he gets points from counter attacks against top teams.

Well he tends to haul regardless then, he might become the circa 200% EO player this season.
