With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is FPL Milanista, who has posted overall ranks of 473rd and 1,547th in the last two FPL seasons.

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is back for a new season and so is our tinkering. The Premier League champions have signed one of the most prolific talents in world football, Erling Haaland (£11.5m), while runners-up Liverpool have also strengthened their squad and, in my opinion, still offer the best FPL options for our teams. Without further ado, let’s jump into my initial thoughts and first draft for the 2022/23 season.

How’s this for something slightly different. Couple of punts and it seems not many will agree, but I like Vardy and Maddison for Brentford at home (can easily become Sterling and Jesus or similar).

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA Laporte Chilwell Tomiyasu (Williams)
Salah Son Maddy Bruno G (Andreas)
    Vardy Johnson (4.5)

    Thoughts?

Nice spread of funds. Don't like Bruno G though, much rather Martinelli

Any reason why no love for Bruno G? I’d say more guaranteed starts/mins than Martinelli

He sits deep. Massively outperformed his xG last season, I don't think he can replicate that goalscoring

Depends when you plan to WC.
Jesus and Haaland could cause havoc early on.

Hoping to not have to WC til gw 8-9, but jumping on Jesus or changing in any of the 8m mids is easy enough early on. Haaland will mean ridding Son or Salah so that will be harder.

You are right they could cause havoc hence I have them both but it wouldn’t surprise me if Vardy outscores both of them combined in GW1.

Definitely different, I like it. Would be wary of no City attack but can't have them all, really like Vardy in particular, tends to start well and I think Leicester could have a decent season if they can make an addition or two, having a more settled defence will help. I'd just keep an eye on things at Newcastle regarding Bruno G, I had him during his good spell last season but it coincided with Willock getting injured twice so he seemed to have attacking responsibility while Shelvey and Joelinton sat in deeper. If Willock is fit and looks like he'll start or if Newcastle sign an attacking midfielder then I'd probably give him a miss as I expect he'll do what he did when he first got into the team and do a box-to-box job but with less attacking intent

No Salah team. How's it looking?

    Raya

    Haaland Jesus Nunez

    Begovic Rice N.Williams Andreas

More value in the 8ms over Sterling I reckon, my no Salah team below.

Looks quite strong to be fair. However, I do feel it would be stronger without Nunez. You could downgrade him to a scrub, add an 8m mid, and use the 1m saving to upgrade Cash to James or Chilwell.

Good forward line. Nunez a punt but could be gold. Bit of a differential really. No spurs (attack) could hurt slightly.

Surely you need an attacking spurs player what with their opening fixtures?

      1. DelPiero10

Their fixtures are quite mixed imo. They do pick up around gw11 though and stay strong for a while.

I’m a Liverpool fan and I think Nunez will be class, but I’d be very cautious of picking him early. I’d personally swap him and Rice out for and Sancho a 4.5 striker, and then maybe use the extra money to upgrade Raya to Alisson or something?

I’d also go with Son all day long over Sterling if you can. I think if you’ve got no Salah you HAVE to have Son.

      Take out Nunez and Rice.

You could try Wilson, Johnson or Mitrovic for the third striker spot if you are set on a 4-3-3.

Rice needs to be fodder, save yourself the 0.5 it will be handy.

Sterling and ASM can become Son/Salah and a 5/6/7.0 mid or two good 8.0 mids.

Alternatively take Sterling down to an 8.0 mid then upgrade Nunez to Kane

  3. Dacra

    Mendy
Robbo - Cancelo - Perisic (Tomi, Williams)
Diaz - Mount - Foden - Martinelli (Andreas)
    Jesus - Haaland - Nunez

Im happy with this and have accpeted the no Salah risk pretty much, just need to keep an eye on whether Nunez is going to get thrown straight in.

One of Foden or Mount could well be Kulusevski. But then he could lose out to Rich?

            • 15 Years
            4 years, 4 days ago

Yeah. There are some fantastic 8.0 mid options but they're all risks to begin with. Kulu obviously will be nailed for GW1 with Rich suspended, and you'd fancy Diaz to start strongly too. Not sure about the others but hopefully we'll know more pre-season. Obviously providing no early price changes it will be easy to move between them, but that could also be a bit of a trap for trigger-happy managers at the start of the season 😉

  4. Catastrophe

    X
    TAA, Cancelo, Chilwell, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Martinelli, Neto, X
    Kane, Haaland

    A) Allison & Botman (5-3-2)
    B) Raya & Perisic (5-3-2)
    C) Raya & Bruno G (4-4-2)
    D) Mendy & Doherty (5-3-2)

Leaning towards A - fancy Alisson over Diaz for 3rd LIV spot - highest value player @ 5.5 and fancy another good season.

    Cheers

        • 15 Years
        4 years, 4 days ago

I wouldn't say it's necessarily a love for that formation but more the price-points? Although option C is 4-4-2 🙂 I'm stuck somewhere between B and C. if Perisic gets enough minutes he's surely a better option than any 5.5 or even 6.0 mids?

      2. The Mentaculus
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 4 days ago

Yeah I think its because the top performing mids are all up to 8m, not so much value in the 6-7.5m range, while defenders have stayed the same or even dropped. Nonetheless, I still fancy a 451 myself

      C all day for me.
I agree 5 at the back is overrated. You’ve got the 3 best ones there and a very good 4th.
Maybe the Brighton GKs over Brentford as there’s talk of uncertainty for Raya?

A smart fit reckon. Can't be having Tavares again when Tierney gets injured, plus he can cover the holding midfield role

Back up to Tierney yes, but he's always maintained he wants a midfield role like he does for his country. Versatile - midfield until T gets crocked.

It's funny - until the Liverpool v Man Utd game the other day, the template was beginning to take shape. Now all of sudden we're seeing dozens of 'Salah-less' RMTs popping up all over, presumably influenced by the fact (a) Mo did not score in the minutes he was on the pitch and (b) Liverpool were beat 4-0.

I'm not complaining or anything, I've had a 'No-Salah' team for a while too but just goes to show how fragile we FPL managers are when it comes to recency bias!

I think it is more a case of can you make the extra 3m work elsewhere and given the price points I think I can.
I don't think anyone is reacting after a friendly.

      1. Kobayashi
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 4 days ago

More like 1-1.5m - I'm not arguing with the approach, just the timing - there have been far more 'Salah-less' RMTs after that friendly than there were before and I'm not saying that's the reason for your RMT above, but draw your own conclusions!

Good article on The Athletic about Spurs’ new set piece coach.

I'm starting to give serious consideration to BB GW1 and early WC strategy. Thinking this season is an opportunity to be a bit maverick and go for it from the off....

Interestingly, if you use the %age ownership to try and create the "blueprint", you can squeeze this team in - quite tasty and good for keeping up with the joneses until the first wildcard:

    Mendy Raya
    TAA Cancelo Perisic James Cash
    Salah Diaz Neto Guimaraes Saka
    Haaland Jesus Greenwood

I fail to see the point in looking at a team that costs 105m?

I can't tell whether I really like my team or it's absolutely drizzling. Going for a 5-4-1 approach

    Raya (Forster)

    Cancelo | TAA | Trippier | James | Perisic

    Diaz | Salah | Saka | Gordon | (Neto)

    Haaland | (Archer) | (Greenwood)

Not 100% on my bench fodder, but after last season don't see much in the way of value for money mid price forwards

I couldn't stand my subs when I was looking at 5-4-1.
Also, someone pointed out to me, that if your one striker doesn't play then you play with a 5-4-0

Yeah, the subs are rough. I should probably get *someone* as a sub cover.

I'm either thinking of downgrading Neto/Gordon to a 4.5, to get me up to a £5.5 forward (maybe Edouard or Undav?) or MAYBE dropping James down to Ake, should to move go ahead

I didn't like a 5.5 sub on bench and still no guarantee to play, so reluctantly went 2 at the front in the end.

Why don’t you just swap Saka for Jesus

Should Ake (presuming he makes the Chelsea move) be getting more love? £5m for what should be a nailed (he's moving for game time) Chelsea CB?

Definitely a nice option, likes to get on the ball too so could be decent for bps (although you'd expect in a game with a Chelsea clean sheets the wingbacks will dominate those)

I don't think they're done with the CB shopping spree yet so hard to know if he's nailed. The upheaval & unpredictability is enough to put me off my beloved Reece so the CBs are pretty far from my thoughts

    1. Salah, Kane, Laporte (no City attack)
    2. Son, Haaland, Cancelo (only Trent & Diaz from Pool)

I think the thing that is diffrent from the meta is that I have a 4.5M defender playing every week and I don't have Neto.
