The 2014/15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) overall winner, Simon March, talked to our very own Joe in midweek about his Gameweek 1 plans and first team draft.

With FPL live for 2022/23, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from our panel of writers in the lead-up to August, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our contributors will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

With some of us Fantasy managers wondering whether we can adopt a successful ‘threemium’ strategy with a trio of heavy hitters, Simon’s team contains only one £10.0m+ player.

The former champ has instead packed his midfield and attack with four players in the £8.0m-£8.5m bracket, including lone forward Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m).

There are the obligatory premium names in defence, too, along with a surprise choice between the posts.

You can watch the embedded video below.

Other top FPL managers such as Lateriser, Zophar, Tom Freeman and Luke Williams have already been speaking to Az about their first drafts, and you can watch their videos – along with lots of other pre-season content – over on our YouTube channel.

Laporte unlikely to be fit for the start of the season.

    https://theathletic.com/3439099/2022/07/21/manchester-city-club-america/

"The Spain defender battled through the final games of last season, shrugging off a muscle injury in the final stages of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and then a bad-looking knee injury against Wolves to make sure City weren’t left short for their crucial last two games of 2021-22.

He could not train between matches and felt it difficult to move when he did play, and his heroic efforts came at the cost of a small procedure at Dr Ramon Cugat’s Barcelona clinic soon after City lifted the title."

City also have worries about Dias and his fitness relating to the hamstring injuries towards the end of the season that he picked up. He missed last night's game due to illness but it seems they're worried about him overdoing things

I’d wager good money that one if not both will start the season, City can’t afford to begin the campaign with both sidelined & neither of these ‘injuries’ seem to be major considering both played last year with similar issues. They’d survive with one of Dias/Laporte partnering Stones for the first few games but Ake is a long way off the standard needed.

From what I saw of Ake's limited time last season, I thought he looked the part, certainly compared to his first season. To be fair to him, I think it's been hard for him to really get any rhythm going with being in and out of the side so regularly in a position like that, combined with often being deployed at LB.

Always good to hear others opinions, I personally feel Ake panics and is too prone to a mistake. I agree that being played at LB won’t help matters in terms of consistency but he regularly played their for Bournemouth. He may just be someone who would benefit from a true run of games to see his potential reached, unfortunately not going to happen at City barring an injury crisis.

If this Cucurella deal doesn’t happen Pep has stated Ake is their go-to back up LB, so he has some trust in him clearly.

Even should that happen - there's no way that left back comes in and starts the first few games. Walker is in for me for the first 2 or 3 weeks then I'll be hopping onto Perisic once he's match fit

Very typical of Forest and the sort of thing I would expect them to do.

    5-4-1 the way to go.
Saka better option than Jesus as you can alternate between the many 8m mids with spare cash:

    Lloris
    Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, Chilwell, Gabriel
    Luis Diaz, Mount, Saka, Maddison
    Kane (C)
(Bazunu, Andreas, Lavia, Plange) (0.5m ITB)

Not sure, if Jesus starts firing his ownership could hurt you and you still have plenty 8m mids to fiddle with anyway. Same with Salah obviously re his ownership. Otherwise solid team all round

coverage is irrelevant. And Salah is not essential when Spurs/City can be your captains for the first 5.

    3. Bambi

More look to be switching to three premiums. This is the most settled draft I've made that strikes a good balance

      Meslier - 4.0
      TAA - James - Perisic - Tomiyasu - Neco
      Salah - Son - Rashford - Bailey - Andreas
      Haaland - Martial - Greenwood

Only concern is Rashford/Martial double up but it is a high-risk high-reward scenario that could pay off

      1. TheBiffas
        • 5 Years

            Settled on this for now

            Meslier

            TAA - James - Trippier - Zinchenko

            Salah - Diaz - Martinelli - Bailey

            Haaland - Kane

Like this a lot too! Having Kane allows for Diaz in midfield too and the opportunity to jump on which ever 8.0 emerges as the prime pick. Like a lot
Would consider downgrading Trip/Zinc to upgrade Martinelli to Rashford if he looks nailed?

Could get Cucurella if he looks like nailing down LB. Otherwise I'm okay to go without

I've found myself in a similar place with my latest couple of drafts, which is wild 'cos Cancelo was second or third name in my squad for the preceding 1,628 versions. The Laporte/Dias news makes me feel a little better about it, though they'll probably sign someone if needed.

Rashford and Martial are pointless unless Ronaldo leaves

Even should Ronaldo stay I would expect Rashford, Martial and Sancho to start the season as they have had a lot of pre-season conditioning whilst the 37 year old ronaldo has not

Mount or Diaz for first 8 GWks?

        Have Salah, TAA, James

            Diaz

Also inb4 somebody says Salah TAA James have no bearing on what Diaz or Mount score

Really happy with this draft, my biggest issue is no Spurs cover, any ideas on what I can do here or do I have to lose one of the big guns to fit Son in for example?

          Mendy
          James - Taa - Cancelo - Zinchenko
          Salah - Mount - Rashford - Bailey
          Haaland - Jesus

          Forster - Andreas - Dalot - Greenwood

If you don't want three premiums my way of doing it would be getting Mahrez for city attack and Kane for spurs attack

Everybody sing along, If you’re happy and you know it…….,,worry about lack of Spurs coverage. If you’re happy and you know it ……..worry about lack of Spurs coverage. If you’re happy and you know it then you really ought to show it, if you’re happy and you know it……worry about lack of Spurs coverage!

It's very similar to mine, so I like it 🙂

If you want Spurs, it's probably going to mean you either sacrifice Salah or Haaland for Son or Kane - not something I'd want to do. You can't have them all.

Kuluveski over Mount for Spurs cover? You have a very similar set up to me.

            Ramsdale
            TAA Cancelo James 5m def
            Salah Maddison Rashford 5.5 mid
            Haaland/Kane Jesus

Not an upgrade imo - Kulu and Richarlson will share some minutes.

          B) Son, KDB, Mount, Rashford

KdB minutes per xGI only 161.3... that is surprising, thought it would be much much better. Could this be skewed because he scores lots of long range efforts?

I would think so, assuming a fair few of his goals are low XGi

He is overpriced. He is a playmaker not a regular scorer. Definitely the other premiums are better in fpl terms.
Also his output depends on how pep uses him. Advanced or deep

He was massively over performing based on his xGI at the back end of last year.

He could easily over perform by that level and more with Haaland to put away the chances.
