Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

Foden might play RW, but Mahrez is gold if he starts… high risk, high reward.

Maddison looks in fantastic shape pre season, nailed, you know what you get. Top player but inferior team to Man City.

      Maddison

We've been here so many times with Citeh assets. Only Gundogan 5.5 20-21 has ever been worth it

Haaland is premium rather than mid-price. I can see why people would go for the Kane slot to facilitate Haaland

          Personally, Son/KDB is the play

Anyone else going without Jesus? Or in fear of his ownership?

Don’t think the opening two are that great for Arsenal, and tbc how they cram in/manage subs with Pepe, Martinelli, Saka, ESR, Nketia and Jesus playing for 3 spots.

You can scrub Pepe from that list for a start. There will be some rotation of course but Jesus will be in starting 11 for the most part, looks like he'll play alongside Nketia as much as being replaced by him. Saka is nailed on right. Martinelli and ESR will see some rotation, but Martinelli favoured.

I think you are overthinking things.

Can see many early wildcards. The best option will emerge by then.

Not losing too much sleep over keepers atm. Short term points for goalkeepers difficult to predict (unless you're Ederson) so I'm just gonna go with a 4.5 and blindly pick one.

    10. Pariße

I’m on Ederson after doing some analyzing. He’s a premium keeper with a discounted price. Save points aside with all the changes City went through in the attacking department, they need to count on their defenders to offer some stability. Next to that, ensuring one City player spot for Ederson is completely okay as you avoid their rotation trap elsewhere.

The best alternatives I see are Ramsdale with CS + better save potential but with Arsenal’s players being so underpriced across all positions, I think he’d be a waste of a spot.

Mendy is also okay but I see many question marks here as their defence is in a reconstruction phase.

Alisson - would be a shame to waste a Liverpool spot for him.

Sa, Martinez, Pope - all of these have the potential to be a top fpl keepers too but coming from teams with less CS and bigger save potential, which is a gamble.

It's punty which I like but the structure is a bit off for me. I would downgrade the bench to the usuall structure - 4.0, 4.5, 4.5 anything above that isn't worth it imo.

    5. Pariße
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 11 months ago

I think Trippier will easily outscore Botman and you can find the money for it.

Also bench is not as important this year due to the 5-sub rule (real life bench works the opposite to the FPL bench). I think this means more game time for everybody and less auto-subs in FPL.

Is Sancho actually worth a punt to start?

I'm torn between Sancho in a 4-4-2 or some minor edits for a 5-3-2 (likely with Robertson)

    Current team is:
    Edersen
    TAA, Dias, Trippier, Gabriel
    Salah, Diaz, Martenelli, Sancho*
    Jesus, Kane

Obviously Robertson is a better pick over Sancho but I don’t like 532 as a formation at all. So I would leave it as is.

      1. ilikewud
        • 5 Years

Yes, this is my thought - I could do a Sancho and Mart to 8.0 and Neto.

      2. Pariße
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

This is a curious logic that causes personal problems for me too.

If Robertson is a better pick than any 8m mid, why would I not go for him? Then I switch it up and it means there are two 6m mids in my team and an inevitable 4.5 defender.

  12. Bobby Digital
    • 8 Years
    3 years, 11 months ago

Like the prices this year. So many different options. Is two 8m players better than one 11.5m and a 4.5m fodder? Instead of two premiums I've gone for four 8m players in midfield.

    1. ilikewud
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 11 months ago

I think the 8m mids could be frustrating having to chop and change so I think having multiple is a sound strategy. I prefer the 11.5 and 4.5 (if the 11.5 is a captain option).

    2. TheBiffas
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 11 months ago

4.5 doesn't have to be fodder, there are great 4.5 defs and for 5.0 Bailey or KDH

But generally you'd have a complete team with your 4.5m defenders, so it would be a 4.5m midfield/forward sub.

A lot depends on Shield game regarding Haaland but this is it:

I still trust city with Laporte out. The others are slightly concerning with Liverpool being the least and Chelsea being the most.

James has final left my draft especially if he is going to start the season at CB. But TAA Robertson and Cancelo are what they are despite anyone else missing. They are locked.

More or less down to choosing def and mid for total 13.0:

    A) 5.0 def and Diaz

    B) Robo and 6.0 mid

Sounds like overthinking - even if the replacement keeper was totally useless, I can't imagine Fulham creating lots of chances. Plus you aren't just picking a squad for one week.

Anyone think Grealish could be a relatively alright pick at the start with Jesus and Sterling out the picture now and Foden no preseason?

Jesus and sterling out should benefit mahrez as RW not Grealish as LW. Either way think mahrez grealish and foden will rotate as the wide forward options

The gr8 Grealish hype lol, doesn't score enough to be viable especially in a side like that. Mahrez is clear, Grealish and Foden will fight it out for LW

Chelsea are now interested, but Leicester are putting an off-putting 70m price on him. However, I do wonder if there's a secret financial crisis at Leicester that might make the sell on the cheap.

          Ederson - Klaesson/Ward
          TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Romero - Trippier
          Salah - Son/KDB - Martinelli - Neto

      Rankings:
      1. Mount - probably highest upside considering stability of team (offensively anyway), schedule, and history
      2. Diaz - best team, great fixtures, great skills - slight, slight possibility of rotation
      3. Saka - best schedule, knocked down a bit due to uncertainty how his game will change due to Jesus
      4. Maddison - probably better skill-wise than most of the others here, but team isn't as good and schedule is up n down
      5. Mahrez - undeniable skills - who knows who Pep plays from week to week and how many minutes
      (not pictured):
      6. Foden - see 'Mahrez'
      7. Kulsevski - he overachieved last year

      Hello Gaffa

I am currently on Diaz, Mahrez and Kulusevski, but in dillema between Kulu and Maddison.

Diaz will for sure stay in team. I watched him last season and he is so lovely player, great replacement for Mane.

Mahrez - on pens and set pieces and don't have a real competition on a right flank

If Maddison managed to be 5th most scoring mid last season with all setbacks Leicester had because of Europe, I guess he can be only better this season.

Now, Kulu is in my team because of no Spurs and it is 50/50 between him and Mads.

I’ve been stuck on this team for a week and can’t seem to find the right change.

    Henderson/Hennessy
    Robertson/Cancelo/Trippier/White/Neco
    Son/Maddison/Foden/Kulu/JWP
    Nunez/Jesus/Greenwood

It’s two transfers to a second big player, but that feels like an acceptable risk.

Pool, City and Chels def looks good for a long time so doubling up either pool or Chelsea (got Ederson and Cancelo).

Going with TAA and James also, so my question is do I double on Pool with Matip or Chelsea with Chillwell?

Only got 6m so robbo or vvd not an option

No, definitely sold on doubling up on Pool or Chelsea. It's just Matip for Cs but lack of goal/assist threat vs Chillwell Cs not looking that likely at the moment but goal/assist threat
