There is plenty to dissect on the injury front ahead of Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with Premier League and FPL managers alike having to deal with various fitness issues picked up over the international break.

We’ll be covering all of the team news quotes from the Premier League press conferences being held over the next two days, starting with this round-up of Thursday’s media gatherings.

Just four managers faced reporters today, with the other 16 bosses set to fulfill their obligatory duties on Friday.

Away from the press conferences, Thursday also brought news that Emile Smith Rowe would be ruled out until December after having groin surgery.

KEY UPDATES

PRESS CONFERENCE TIMES:

CLUB-BY-CLUB GUIDE

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Antonio Conte gave little away on the team news front when asked about Spurs’ fitness latest ahead of the north London derby.

Hugo Lloris pulled out of the France squad over the last fortnight with a thigh problem, while reports on Thursday morning suggest that Dejan Kulusevski is a big doubt because of a hamstring issue.

Conte, however, wouldn’t give us concrete news on either player – or anyone else, for that matter.

“We have to wait, we have to wait till tomorrow to check some players because they returned from their national teams with some physical problems. Tomorrow’s last training session will be very important to understand the players that we can count [on]. At the moment, we have to wait.

“Honestly I don’t want to speak about the injuries because I don’t want to give advantage to Arsenal. But for sure we have to face some problems, some physical problems and we have to know also that we have just started to play the first game in a run that we have to play 13 games in 43 days. For sure we have to try to make the best solution and not take big risks. If we were to take big risks and lose players for the rest of the games, it will be a disaster. I repeat: to play with three games I need to count on the whole squad.” – Antonio Conte

Conte at least acknowledged that Kulusevski had a problem in another comment, perhaps hinting that the Swede wouldn’t be involved this weekend – and suggesting that it wasn’t a given that Richarlison comes straight into the starting XI:

“For sure [playing three central midfielders] can be a good option because we have midfielders who are good also to play as a three. Bissouma when he came in against Leicester played well and he is really well integrated with Pierre and Bentancur. Yeah, this could be an option, not only for tomorrow but also for the future because if we need to give rest to other players, especially when you have this type of situation that happened with Kulusevski having this injury, it can be an option.” – Antonio Conte

Speaking to in-house media in a separate interview, Conte also confirmed that Lloris was one of the players who was set to be assessed:

“Hugo is one of the players with some physical problems, but we hope to see him on Saturday.” – Antonio Conte

Ben Davies (knee) and Lucas Moura (tendon) had been expected to be close to fitness after the September international break but again, there was no word from Conte on either player.

Elsewhere, Conte briefly discussed Son Heung-min‘s set-piece responsibilities after the winger scored a rasping free-kick for his national team in the last week.

“Son is one of the three players who have the task to take set pieces. We have him, Harry and Eric Dier. For sure now he has great confidence because he scored but already before he was one of these three players.” – Antonio Conte

EVERTON

The Toffees announced yesterday that Nathan Patterson will miss the next four to five weeks with the knee injury he picked up while playing for Scotland over the September international break.

The young full-back joins Mason Holgate (knee), Andros Townsend (knee), Yerry Mina (ankle) and Ben Godfrey (leg) on the sidelines for the trip to Southampton.

“It’s a blow for us all because he’s been fantastic. His level of performance has been great.

“The four-to-five week estimate is probably more positive than what our first thoughts were. Let’s hope we can get him back quickly.” – Frank Lampard on Nathan Patterson

Jordan Pickford is available after recovering from a thigh injury but Lampard was cautious when asked if the fit-again Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be involved in the squad this weekend.

“We’re considering it. Dominic, we’re working to make sure he comes back in the best fitness and strength for us. We’ll see on that one.” – Frank Lampard

BOURNEMOUTH

Lloyd Kelly (ankle) remains sidelined for Bournemouth’s match against Brentford, with no timeframe put on his return.

Joe Rothwell (thigh) and Ben Pearson (knee) are “getting real close” to returning, while Ryan Fredericks (unspecified) is making “big improvements” – although it wasn’t abundantly clear whether caretaker boss Gary O’Neil was completely ruling all three out of this weekend’s fixture.

David Brooks had been on the cusp of a return from a length lay-off after fighting cancer but suffered hamstring discomfort in an academy game a month ago and took a step back with this rehabilitation.

BRENTFORD

Christian Norgaard (Achilles) is still “weeks away” from being fit, while Keane Lewis-Potter is unavailable to face Bournemouth this weekend due to an ankle/foot ligament issue picked up with the England under-21s.

Ethan Pinnock is on the cusp of a return, however: the defender has recovered from a knee injury he picked up in pre-season and featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Reading last week.

Thomas Frank did suggest that the centre-half wouldn’t start just yet, however, indicating that he would only feature if the Bees were short of options at the back.

Have James, Trippier, Cancelo and Neco. Should pick one max 5.0 defender who will sit on bench. Planned to get Patterson but he is injured.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Son started hauling every game now, even ARS/BHA. But then it was only Leicester defence... Its a tough call vs KDB but if you're feeling the hot streak Son go for it

Not at all, saving yourself a transfer down the line. I'm still not sure on Son just yet, I only saw the highlights of the Leicester game yesterday but he won't score those goals often or play a team as poor as Leicester that often so I'm still waiting for a few more games. That being said, the Arsenal game may suit him and he was in good form for SK

Anyone have an itch to get Chilwell in?

I could do Gabriel > Chilwell now leading into WC13
Seems insane - but if you get it right and get the James/Chilwell double for Palace, Wolves, Villa, Brentford....wowsers it could pay off.

Not if Sterling is playing left wing back and Cucerella left centre back, doesn’t leave much room for Chilwell

Well we do have a clue from Potter’s first game and Sterling was great in the Trossard role at lwb. Chilwell also has fitness issues, so I’d definitely hold back on that punt

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Not worth it, I made punts like that a few times last season and it blew up in my face every time. If you want maybe go for a placeholder for a simple move to him, but he's under a new manager in a new system and looks like Sterling will play LWB now so lot of question marks over Chilwell, and that's ignoring the fact he's barely featured this season and the possibility of Cucurella playing wide too. Still questions over Chelsea defensively too

      1. RogDog_jimmy

I guess the downside isn't huge for me.
If he's benched I would Bailey or Andreas coming in this week.

Perisic is who I'd have as an equivalent player I suppose.

The safe thing to do is roll and start Bailey over Gabriel. (And like 90% what I'm likely to do).

The defensive stats for Chelsea are good and the fixtures are amazing. Would be a shame if we lost an attacking defensive slot to an OOP midfielder (from an FPL point of view).
Maybe Cucurella is the safer place to double up.

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 5 months ago

It's your call in the end. The thing for me is that you might say now that the downside to it failing is small but that can change quickly. He might not appear at all, he might get a couple of minutes, but if he continues to be far behind others/ unfit then you've used one transfer to get him in and then probably need another to get him out for GW12. Throw in one injury or suspension and then you're in a bit of trouble heading towards / into that week where hits may need to be taken to rectify that punt, and suddenly you're down players, free transfers and points from one punt

I started the season with Chilly and Doherty, spent 9 weeks without success waiting to transfer them out. Now I've WC'd in the GW9 break I've finally managed to get rid.
However, 2 days before the 9 deadline they have not somehow ended up back in the team after convincing myself that surely they'll play now the European games are back on. LOL

Like many others, I had those 6 players. I have already transferred out Jesus. Plan is to sell Cancelo and De Bruyne, bench Haaland, Martinelli and Saliba.

But the plan may change. I am also considering keeping Haaland and Cancelo because I may get Saka and Gabriel from Arsenal instead of Martinelli and Saliba. The blank provides a good excuse to switch but requires careful planning.

For me, I want at least Haaland, Cancelo, Martinelli & Jesus from GW13 onwards. Plan to bench the first 3. Jesus I'll sell & rebuy. KDB I think I'll sell for Son in GW12. Don't have a 3rd Arsenal myself.

I think Brighton will score and apart from one game (Bournemouth), TAA has been really poor this season. I could be way off and it pays off for you (heck Liverpool are at the top of the clean sheet odds) but I think it's very risky against a side that's above them in the table and that's scored 9 in their last 4

Good point!! Though Chilwell been playing well and also Sterling LWB complicating matters

No need to complicate matters, Cucu seems pretty nailed on for left centre back, and can also fill in at lwb when needed, so he’s doubly nailed imo

I don't have a WC, but I am very close to the template -- only 2 moves away. I think the template is very strong. Shall I copy the template or save my FT?

    Pope
    Cancelo - Trippier - Struijk
    KDB - Sterling - Maddison - Martinelli
    Haaland (c) - Mitro - Toney

    Ward - Saliba - Andreas - Neco | 1 FT | 0.5m in the bank

    1) Template move:
    Sterling + Neco --> Zaha + James (-4)

    2) Save FT

If you do keep Sterling maybe look to get Fofana or Mendy to cover no James?

This is a very good option. I am considering Saliba to Fofana to cover the clean sheet points of James. That would also help me build towards GW12. But James has been prolific in terms of attacking. And James could cover Sterling (lol).

            James has 1 G, 1 A and 1 CS in 6
            Hardly prolific

Prolific in terms of underlying numbers. Crosses, successful crosses, chances created, shots on target, xGI per 90, xA per 90 -- he is in the top 3 among defenders for all key metrics.

Chelsea are not keeping many cleansheets. That's the only relief going into this gameweek without James.

I also like Sterling, and he is quietly getting the points. Had him since GW3. Going under the radar till now. But Potter's change of formation using him at LWB may be detrimental to his FPL appeal.

Thanks! That's a great shout. Could be my Toney replacement from GW12 onwards. I was thinking of Darwin, but Aubameyang could be better! Wish we could take more than 3 forwards in our teams, lol.

Reassess with 2 FT's next week

I am inclined to do so. However, given the fixtures next week, I may not need any transfers next week as well. I cannot afford Martinelli to Zaha. But, may be I could upgrade my bench for GW12 (sell Neco and buy some defender up to 4.5m specifically for that gameweek).

On WC, have Ward as my other keeper:

    A. Guaita & 4.5 def (Burn/Zouma)
    B. Iversen & Cucurella

    Thanks!

If you have six players from Arsenal and City make it sense to wildcard before game week 12? Or should you take them out now and do not transfer players in with good fixtures (like Maddison and Zaha)?

    Thank you!

Why not just have Salah now instead of KDB?

Both have one tough and one easy fixture in next two then play each other. But salah is more explosive

I’ve considered it but would lose value in KDB (who I want for gw10). Plan was to assess and bring Salah in gw12 if he starts hauling

    3. banskt
      • 12 Years

I would start Iversen. Its a win-win really.

In case he plays, Leicester has a higher chance of clean sheet as compared to Newcastle (in my opinion, do not know bookies odds).

In case he does not play, you will get Pope points anyway.

The last scenario: he comes on for a cameo. If Ward gets a red card, then Iversen gets a chance of saving a penalty which he is good at. If Ward is injured, that would be extremely unlucky and has a very low probability.
