We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from two of Wednesday’s four fixtures in our Scout Notes summary. Southampton host Nottingham Forest, whilst Leeds United welcome West Ham United to Elland Road.

The numbers and graphics below are taken from LiveFPL and our own Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

READ MORE: More clean sheets for FPL’s best defences

Southampton’s sixth successive Premier League defeat brought no shots on target, at home to a relegation rival that had previously only scored once on the road all season.

The winner arrived in the 27th minute when a huge error by defender Lyanco (£4.4m) allowed Brennan Johnson (£5.6m) to race forward and eventually square it for Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.7m) to tap in.

CHEAP FOREST FORWARDS

The Awoniyi-Johnson duo have not been mentioned in Fantasy circles all campaign, as neither has exceeded four goal involvements so far. However, Forest’s recent turnaround bodes well for their FPL prospects.

At such low prices, managers get access to a fixture run of Leicester (H), Bournemouth (a), Leeds (H) and Fulham (a). Johnson is on penalty duty whilst Awoniyi is currently on more goals, although he did leave the field with a slight knock.

HENDERSON CLEAN SHEET

Toothless Southampton were unable to force Dean Henderson (£4.7m) into a single save, so his 9.4 per cent ownership will be pleased to have somehow gathered a bonus point despite this.

He ends the night as FPL’s joint second-best goalkeeper of the season with 76 points but those still putting faith in cheap full-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) were frustrated to miss out on a defensive return. He made a seven-minute cameo and hasn’t started any of their last four matches.

BITS AND PIECES

If you punted on attacking full-back Romain Perraud (£4.3m), there’ll be sadness with his one point, taking his total over the three post-Christmas matches up to the dizzy heights of zero.

Gustavo Scarpa (£5.0m) was finally able to make his Forest debut, after playing in friendlies but not being able to officially register under January 1st. To add to the agony of Saints fans, Armel Bella-Kotchap (£4.5m) had to leave with a 33rd-minute injury.

Whilst their fixtures still look good on paper, this was also said before the defeats to Forest, Fulham and Brighton and Hove Albion. FPL managers should avoid assets like Perraud and Che Adams (£6.3m) right now.

Southampton XI: Bazunu; Lyanco (S Armstrong 85), Bella-Kotchap (Caleta-Car 34), Salisu; Walker-Peters, Ward-Prowse, Lavia (Aribo 64), Perraud (Edozie 64); Elyounoussi; Adams, Mara (A Armstrong 64)

Nottingham Forest XI: Henderson; Aurier, Worrall, Boly, Lodi (Toffolo 84); Yates, Freuler, Mangala (Colback 60); Johnson (N Williams 84), Awoniyi (Surridge 71), Gibbs-White (Scarpa 71)

On a night of barely-owned players, at least Rodrigo (£6.3m) was able to make some sort of minor impact. By equalising to make it 2-2, the Spaniard becomes the first FPL midfielder to reach ten goals this season – pipping the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.9m), Miguel Almiron (£5.9m), Gabriel Martinelli (£6.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.0m).

Booked early on, Rodrigo stayed onside to receive a Jack Harrison (£5.8m) pass and shoot into the bottom corner, although he was denied more by two superb Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) saves in the final quarter of an hour and only ends on six points.

CHEAP SUMMERVILLE DOES IT AGAIN

Many FPL managers are rightly pleased with Fulham’s cheap midfield enabler Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) – he’s a nailed-on starter that takes set pieces and currently sits on six assists.

However, if it wasn’t for him, Crysencio Summerville (£4.3m) would surely be deeply discussed right now. His slick one-two with Wilfried Gnonto (£5.0m) was hammered home by the latter, taking Summerville to four goals and two assists from his last six appearances.

Although there is an element of rotation in Jesse Marsch’s mind, the young Dutchman is doing everything he can to solidify his place in the starting XI.

WEST HAM ARE IN TROUBLE

The pressure is mounting on David Moyes, as West Ham are sat in 17th place, only marginally outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.

He made four changes to the line-up to spur a reaction after losing at home to Brentford. Aaron Cresswell (£4.8m) and Said Benrahma (£5.6m) dropped to the bench, with summer signing Nayef Aguerd (£4.8m) getting his first Hammers start.

At least they reacted well to going one-nil down. A foul on Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) enabled Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m) to score from the penalty spot, right on the stroke of half-time. Then, seconds after the break, forward Gianluca Scamacca (£6.6m) powered a shot in off the post to put them ahead.

Yet they couldn’t do enough to secure all three points and were somewhat lucky to escape with one. None of their players exceeds 3.4 per cent ownership and it’s easy to see why.

Leeds United XI: Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Struijk; Roca (Greenwood 78), Adams; Summerville (Harrison 63), Aaronson (Klich 63), Gnonto (Gelhardt 90); Rodrigo

West Ham United XI: Fabianski; Kehrer, Dawson, Aguerd; Coufal (Cresswell 68), Soucek, Rice, Fornals (Downes 80); Paqueta (Benrahma 80), Bowen, Scamacca (Antonio 68)

    BB23:

(H)aaland Akanji Ederson vs Villa & Arsenal
(VC)Odegaard White Ramsdale vs Brentford & City
    Almiron Trippier Schar vs Bournemouth
    Rashford Shaw vs Leeds
    Kane vs Leicester
    Salah vs Everton
    Mitrovic vs Forest
    Mitoma vs Palace

0.8m buffer with 1 extra FT for any surprises

2 FTs and 1.2m spent between GWs 21 and 23: Kepa and Sanchez to Ederson and Ramsdale. Completely unnecessary and can be spent on Arsenal/City replacements for any injuries/suspension/etc, as Kepa and Sanchez have good fixtures in GW23 as well

Looks good and I wish you luck, although honestly I'm not quite sure I'd expect much more than 3-4pts from Akanji, Ederson, White and Ramsdale. Then again if just one of those outperforms that then it could bring you to around 20pts which is generally the hope for a BB

I'm happy that my lowest scorers will probably be those with doubles, as I wouldn't want to bench 'em and two blanks can, as you say, bring 3/4 points for each. I don't expect the fixtures to fall this kindly for 15 FPL assets at once in later doubles, so I'll bite the bullet unless things go horribly wrong between now and then

Its a lovely set of fixtures that week & I think this will work out nicely. I'm looking at it too but my main drawback is my keepers' fixtures - Raya (ars) & Ward (TOT). Don't really want to ditch Raya

Raya is locked in for saves vs Arsenal, so I think he's worth the risk

Maybe just the FT to replace Ward, if you can afford it? Leicester defence has started the second half-season how they started the first. I'd suggest Ward to Sánchez for his likely GW21 double

City will give Rashford space to run. I'm probably benching vs Arsenal, but that's highly debatable

Rashford is going nowhere until something happens to him or his form. He's the Man U attack, like Kane for Spurs atm. Fixtures don't matter for these two now, because almost every attacking phase runs through the talismans

If there's nobody else who can go for Almiron, just go without, imo. I do consider Almiron very important for the next 4 GWs, but you'd need someone to sell before you can get the player you want to buy

Palace had the most shots last night. 19 shots vs Spurs

Spurs face Arsenal, Man City (if confirmed) Fulham, Man City in the league next. Teams who are very likely to score from that volume of shots

Spurs defenders aren't worth it for the double, imo. I consider those Doc and Perisic hauls to be quite the blip, as they should have found themselves coming back from 2 goals down yet again (10 in a row in all comps, or something like that?) in their brilliant second half. They could get lucky and Arsenal/City has a bad day, but that's what you'd have to hope for

Beginning to worry for Palace a bit, this happened with Vieira at Nice to an extent. Lost 10 games all season in his first season then lost nearly the same amount by the time he was sacked in December the next year. Only lost 12 games last season but already lost 7 so far this year and xG data for and against isn't good

It's a fair point. However City's goals have also dried up a bit in his absence as well. In the 10 games he started before the benching run began, City scored 33 goals, in the 5 he's been benched in since they've scored 10 (and this included games against some leaky sides like Fulham, Leeds and Everton).

The Liverpool game was definitely an error I felt, City struggled to create much and the game was crying out for Grealish who'd help slow things down (which could have help negate the defensive errors that led to Salah's two 1-on-1s), but part of that error wasn't that Foden was playing but was that KDB was deployed at RW for some bizarre reason, nullifying KDB himself and that space in general. He always seems to take bad results against Liverpool to heart so I wonder if that was it. They're chasing Arsenal now and have both Newcastle and ManUtd breathing down their necks, I think he can't afford to keep Cancelo and Foden out

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

Did you read that The Athletic article about Foden being dropped?

There's something there along the lines of: "If the game is fun for us, the plan isn't working and Pep doesn't seem to like that at this stage of his career"

They do need more goals though, so maybe Pep will change his mind again

I think that Brentford game doomed Foden's chances, but let's see if Pep switches things up once more. Dude's always evolving

I still don't fully understand what Cancelo did wrong either. Maybe the dip in attacking threat and the rise of Lewis, or some poor defending... Or fitness? Dalot starting over him for Portugal was a bad sign to me. Something might not be quite right anymore

        1. The Big Fella
          • 9 Years

Not sure I understand the quote - is that what Foden said Pep thinks? Didn’t Pep recently say he chooses players now based on how much they enjoy training and are smiling?

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years

About the quote: No, no. I was just paraphrasing the article's author's opinion, not a Pep or Foden quote. The "us" there refers to those of us watching the matches. The more fun City games are to watch, the less control Pep has over the match. Something like that

And yeah, Pep said that later. But Pep contradicts himself rather often in pressers. It's easier to analyse what he actually does

Yeah and I can fully get it, I've noticed the Grealish over Foden/Cancelo thing a fair bit in the last year, people moan about Grealish a lot and I get it but he's not the same player as Foden, slowing things down and having more control is important in games sometimes and there are a lot of teams that can damage City in those back and forth games, nearly every team gets at least one good chance against them because of the numbers they commit forward, and introducing Haaland can be an issue as they've had to sacrifice that extra control and defensive organisation that they had when playing with a false 9 / 9 that pressed and did defensive work more. Grealish is also in the 90th percentile for shot creating actions so City nearly always get chances when he's about. The issue which City had last year was that without Foden they often lacked any urgency or intensity in attack, that was fine against some teams they could pick off but against others (like Everton) it didn't work. They haven't looked very fluid to me since the return so I'm curious to see what happens. I think for as good as Lewis has looked, Cancelo has to come back in, admittedly he hasn't been at his best this year and losing his Portugal spot to Dalot must have hurt him massively, but he's still so important to their build-up. Foden is a different question though

Neither will their football be if that happens. Sick of seeing Fat Sam chewing the cud. Not sure you’re allowed two fat managers in a row in any case.

I sold Wilson for Mitrovic this week, meaning I now have 1 Newcastle spot. I am debating getting Botman in for Patterson but this would mean I have triple Newcastle defence, which is high risk but potentially high reward when looking at their defensive form and fixtures for the next million games. Any thoughts on this?

Are you hungry for risk? Too much for my likening. The angry disappointment of a triple blank would outweigh the rapture of a triple cs.

I am having my worst season ever (2.7m as it stands, with Andreas, Haaland (c) Foden and cancelo to hopefully play) and I look at their form and future fixtures and wonder how much of a risk it really is. I am undecided still, and have a lot of time to decide, so just checking my thinking with others on here whilst I chew it over

Normally nvr double up on defense but its it a good idea to go double Newcastle? Have Trippier.

    Botman or Schar? Price irrelevant

Similar-ish question by me above but more extreme (triple up). I have double Newcastle (Pope and Trippier) and I have been raking in the points. Apparently Schar offers a goal threat, not sure it is enough to justify the extra cash though and I would personally just go for Botman

Well im downgrading Robertson to do Darwin➡️Kane for doubles.

Have Ramsdale/Trippier/Shaw so not sure theres better options than Newcastle.

Nothing wrong with double defence - would absolutely recommend it if you dont have/want double attack.

Schär & Botman are pretty even on bonus but Schär's goal threat is way ahead of Botman's (more than I thought before checking stats). Even from set pieces, Schär has more than twice the number of efforts as Botman. 3x more shots overall, and 4 big chances to Botman's 1.

Yeah. The attacking threat gap is much wider than the 0.6m difference should suggest. He's been unlucky, but I think some massive hauls are coming

So the inevitable slide begins. Was in top 25k until this gw and switched armband from Haaland to Mitro against my better instincts. No Kane has already seen me slide to 45k and I think I’m about to be heavily punished this evening without kdb or a captained Haaland

Or did Shaw stand in for Martinez in centre and Malacia took Shaw's spot at left back? Haven't been watching the games so not sure what the setup has been and what it will default to.

                Dalot - Varane - Martinez - Shaw

Everything else has been due to injuries and the World Cup

The most impressive stand-in has been AWB for Dalot, so that might not be so straightforward when Dalot's hammy returns. I think there's an ETH quote to that effect

Shaw is undroppable, so Malacia has to keep being a good backup. Shaw was shifted straight back to his preferred LB spot once an LCB was available

Not spoiled for choice are we? All city mids at that price risk rotation but could take a punt on Mahrez. Spurs wise you could go Hojbjerg which is a boring pick but may free up funds. Personally I'm not targeting this double because the fixtures are tough and the options scarce.

United are on a relatively good run of form. Spurs have looked vulnerable but this is a big game so expect to see standards raised (Romero back). Just think there will be other opportunities. But trust your own instincts else you'll end up kicking yourself.

Guardiola asked what Phil Foden must do to regain starting spot: "Nothing."

There must be a reason why he's being left out?: "I choose another one. For Jack [Grealish] or for Riyad [Mahrez], who didn't play in the first part of the season a lot and he [Mahrez] played these three games.
"[There is] not a special reason [for Foden being left out]. Be himself.
"The decision on who plays is exclusively mine and not because he's dropping something. Absolutely not."
There's nothing that has changed that has maybe disappointed you?: "Absolutely not."

Well that clears things up! 😉

Not like Pool defence was so CS friendly with Van Dijk in it. Plays the highline too often lately. Himself and Trent together in a backline isn't scaring many opposition attacks.

you were already relying on his attack.

Also is it too much to have Odegaard & Saka ?
I feel like Arsenal is the best team to double or triple up on attack…

Thoughts on Zaha and Darwin to Kane and Mitoma (-4)?

Yeah i got rid of Darwin last GW until he learns to hit the target, can’t handle sitting there and hoping he does anymore. I also have Zaha whom I want to get rid of just not sure to who…Mitoma seems like a good punt but also contemplating Rodrigo
