The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

Why transfer Mitro? Rest looks good, but might also be worth waiting until after EFL cup matches.

Stones, if you don't need the funds elsewhere

Akanji has had one rest since his first start for City, and Pep subbed him on at halftime as an emergency fix to what he described post-match as a mistake

Rico Lewis has gotten lots of praise, but Pep keeps saying Walker's only issue is fitness, so I consider him the most risky. Highest ceiling of the three by some distance, though

Ake is currently Pep's left back. As sure as I am that Cancelo is a priority sale in FPL, I can't guarantee Ake keeps starting over Cancelo

Are you suggesting Walker or Lewis is the most risky to own?

Lewis is the current starter, but Pep's comments about Walker's fitness make Lewis the most risky

Pep's said stuff that implies Walker is still being eased back from injury, rather than being dropped for "mental fitness" like Cancelo

During most of his starts, Stones was needed at RB due to the Walker injury (before Lewis emerged):

Iwobi was stretchered off today with a serious-looking ankle injury

That early transfer isn't worth it until GW20 pressers. There are too many games coming

If you get priced out, I promise there's a cheaper option available who might even outscore that your target, unless your target is Danny Ward, Rico Lewis, Summerville or Ferguson (cheapest starters atm)

    Hold.

        Palace/Brighton to City/Newcastle as opponents

I'd delay this move by one week. Could easily backfire in GW20, unless Shaw gets a double. Even with that, not a priority move right now

Ward to Sanchez/Raya sets you up in ways I can't begin to explain here

You'll raise a lot more funds from your GW21 moves, so just replace Ward now (Leicester look horrible again) with someone who has good doubles coming up

Pep openly called it a mistake and publicly apologized to Cancelo and Rodri for where he had them start the match

An apology is rare from Pep. It's the kind of hard lesson that he somehow still didn't learn from those UCL exits, but at least we're unlikely to see that gamble again soon

Yeah, that apology was is loaded with meaning.

Also said that the game was changed with the substitutions.

It's not like Chelsea is great team in 2023, MCI should not need a transcendent game-plan or performance to beat a mid-table team with probably no players that would start at MCI.

I think Cucurella and Kovacic are the only players that would make the MCI bench these days.

Pep offered BHA €50M for Cucurella before Chelsea ultimately bid €63, otherwise he was MCI bound

At those prices, neither club was thinking of MC as a deep squad player. That's a fee for big contributor.

I think those who have either got rid already of are in the process of getting rid are ahead of the curve personally. You can get starters for good defensive teams with decent attacking threat for almost 3m less currently.

Botman feels like a safe albeit slightly boring pick. Likely to get 7 odd points every other week but no hauls. Very good first bench option at 4.4. For a starter I'd probably want someone a bit more explosive with higher attacking threat.

Bruno is the PK guy for MU - Ronny snaked the job from Bruno, but seems Bruno gets the duty since he did a good job before.

Rash is actually a head-case when it comes to PKs, he got the big PK vs PSG but he was missing quite a few before Bruno came to town.

With 1m in bank and 1 free transfer where would you prioritise transfer/s?

Thinking (if double confirmed) Salah to KDB and Cancelo to Stones -4

    Kepa
    Trippier Cancelo Shaw
    Salah Saka Rashford Almiron
    Haaland Darwin Mitrovic

    Ward White Andreas Patterson *

I'm not one for hits, haven't taken one in two seasons, so I'd probably just do the one.

Nope. Shaw is a bonus points magnet, and he's proven his attacking threat even when Dalot was still more popular than him in FPL. 2 assists in 4 games pre-World Cup, while we were buying Dalot's yellow card count, as Dalot's last attacking return is still GW4

        I'm not against a Rashford - Shaw - Dalot triple-up from GW22 though

    I’m currently on:
    Kepa Ward
    Cancelo, Trippier, Saliba, Perraud, Bueno
    KDB, Almiron, Martinelli, Rashford, Andreas
    Halaand, Kane, Mitro

I don’t think I can hang on to Cancelo at that price if he’s not playing 90 mins. I’ve got 2 FT and thinking, Kepa to Ederson and Cancelo to Shar. And a view to transferring Andreas to Odegaard when their double comes. What do you fellas think? Good moves? Any other suggestions?

Sanchez and arena have good fixtures, Ward to one of those and rotate.

Can cello to Schar a yes for me. Got rid of Cancello last week. He’ll haul at some point, but better options around at the moment.

If you found you had accidentally somehow left Zaha in your squad would a DGW punt on Mahrez be a fun thing to do, assuming DGW goes ahead.

I am probably alone here, but i am finding football quite distasteful at the moment. After a World Cup that was just wrong on so many levels (despite the quality Final). I wont even go there! But at least they at least addressed the elephant in the room: Wasted minutes! The 10 minutes + added time each half was something of beauty!

Sadly the Premier League has chosen to consciously ignore it and look what happens - 43 minutes in play in Arsenal v Newcastle - that is just the tabloid reporting - but this goes deeper, sadly. Even tonight in an un-controversial FA Cup game, they underplayed the first half by 5 mins and the second by 10 minutes!.

It seems that no-one cares for football entertainment enough to fight. That in itself is sad. Please someone provide a valid reason why we don't go Rugby League style and play a 60 minutes in play. No cheating, no arguments, so easy!!

Don't even get me started on the 1 inch dis-allowed offsides!. Truly sickening! Only condoned by football haters! (how is a 5 minute wait, while they draw lines and get out their ruler, clear and obvious!). Whilst also destroying life defining moments with family and friends (Imagine if Agueroooooo! was disallowed by VAR!)

Its late so no-one will see this but i feel better for it!. I will probably repost in a couple of months.

    Love all xx

I agree with you on both counts. Loved the 10 and 11 minutes routinely added on at the WC.

Also, current VAR and “millimeter offside speculation” is sucking the spontaneous emotions out of goal scoring celebrations, especially for fans of the game. The lines they draw are sometimes fatter than the margins themselves:) Wish they’d simplify the offsides rule to feet only or something like that to keep it quicker/easier to define and referee.

While i agree in some parts the offside part is not part of clear and obvious interventions by Var. And while it was to rigid in the first years they made a little bit adjustment to it it really is a good help, bit yes you take away the insyant joy but you also takes away goals which would feel wrongly for the opposition fans.
I didnt watch world cup (not interested) but i noticed the amount of extra time given. That should be something they must begin with on a broader scale.

I agree about the additional time, but I never expected that to change now because we're mid-season and that would be a significant alteration to make that could have made a difference to a lot of results if utilised before the WC, so a lot would cry foul if that was suddenly introduced now (which I think is fair), two wrongs don't make a right of course but in this scenario I do think it's the fairest way given teams have suffered/benefitted from it already in the current campaign.

As for VAR and offsides, yeah. The technology is good and fine it's just the poor implementation of it in the PL really. No benefit is given to the forward on marginal decisions which is what used to be the way and I felt that was fair, poring over the tiniest body area for more than 20-30 seconds is just far too much. VAR in general was utilised better at the WC and I think that comes down to better refereeing standards and practices. Thinking back to Tunisia v France, France scored late into additional time to draw level and play went on for another 2-3 minutes or so immediately, while VAR in the background analysed the goal to see if there was an offside in it. Nobody else knew until the referee stopped to make a decision based off of VAR's recommendations (eventually disallowing) so it wasn't an enormous wait that took the life out of the remainder of the game. Little sensible decisions to utilise the technology while allowing the game to flow are key to making it work.

      AKA

"because an outcome is fun, lets ignore the rules".

If Aguero's shot went in off someones hand should that have also been ignored as it would have ruined the moment?

The rules are the rules, if you don't think a player being further forward than the defending player should be offside then think up another version of the rule. Blaming the use of using technology to enforce rules is odd.

I am going to sell Zaha this week and Foden next week after the City DGW. I am looking at Rashford, Rodrigo and Mitoma as potential replacements. Any opinions on which of these would be best?

I am leaning towards Rashford and Rodrigo at the moment as the Leeds fixtures look great for the next 6, but Brighton's fixtures are also great after Liverpool, and with very dodgy form and now their best defender out, even that game might see a goal or two coming from Brighton.

I could also upgrade Andreas to Mitoma, allowing me to get all three, but as I play 343, I am not sure if this makes sense.

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

Rash kinda seems a must right now to be honest.. I would be tempted to get rid of Foden even this week for him especially if Utd get a double

Yeah he does. Seems to be on pens at the moment too. I would get rid of Zaha for Rashford so that I have Foden for the double and then do the other transfer next week. The problem is then Rodrigo and Mitoma and which to choose, or whether to upgrade Andreas and just have Mitoma sat on the bench all the time, which seems a waste of both a form player in a form team and a good fixture list.

Brighton vs Liverpool looks to be a basketball game. The score could easily be anything (realistic) we can imagine. 4-3, 3-0, 2-2, 1-4

One more match for Darwin, then Kane vs Fulham is a must if you can get there

Hahaha just beat me to it. I have just asked the same question. I usually leave it until 2 weeks before a big double game week and then use TC or BB for the double but I have a few transfers I would like to do now so I am tempted to pull the trigger next week…..

When are people looking at using their wild cards? I have about 5-6 transfers I would like to do but also would like to leave my WC until before one of the big double gameweeks, once announced, so I can TC or BB.
