It’s good to be back writing about FPL – it’s been a while! Before I get into it, I want to thank the team at Fantasy Football Scout again for rescuing the 59th Minute Podcast and giving me the opportunity to type some words about the game we all love (and hate). I’m looking forward to sharing my FPL thoughts with you once a week for the rest of the campaign and for the next few seasons! There will also be a new podcast episode today after the press conferences.

I’ve been given free rein for this first piece so I’ve decided to use it as an opportunity to reflect on my rank rise from outside the top one million at the restart following the World Cup, to 65k going into Gameweek 30. Is the top 10k achievable? I’m certainly going to give it a crack!

When FPL managers are not where they want to be in the rankings or mini-leagues, one of the most common questions I get asked on a weekly basis is – who are the best differentials to close the gap?

The key message I want to get across in this piece is that you don’t need differentials to make up ground. I’ve been playing this game for a very long time (since 2002/03) and I’ve been in the position many times where the season is not going to plan and you get to a crossroads. One route is to keep plodding along, playing it safe and chipping away slowly at the rank. The alternative is to ‘go for it’ and make some risky transfers and captaincy picks. Having explored both paths over the years, I’m very much in the camp of keeping it simple, making sensible transfers and captaincy calls, focusing on the good value picks from the best teams that have great fixtures. That’s FPL in a nutshell.

Differentials are called differentials for a reason, they differ from the optimal picks. More often than not, going with too many low-owned players will lead to bigger problems.

When I think back to the start of the World Cup, my plan for after it was to come back and play very aggressively due to my poor rank. However, over the course of the tournament, my thoughts reverted to my usual ‘safe’ style of play and my Gameweek 17 squad didn’t include any surprise selections. I took the slow-and-steady approach to climbing the rankings.

Gameweek 17 Team

Looking back, from Gameweeks 17 to 25, my starting XI was almost exclusively made up of players from Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur with a sprinkling of Double Gameweek picks from other teams at various points. Squeezing in as many players as possible from the best teams in the league might sound like an obvious FPL strategy but it’s one I constantly have to remind myself of. When there’s a 50/50 call on a transfer, the team they play for is often the deciding factor. A good example of that was Bruno Fernandes (£9.6m) vs James Maddison (£8.3m) for Double Gameweek 29. I was torn on which way to go. In the end, the asset from the better side made it in, not that it got me any points (yet!).

A key decision with the unlimited transfers in Gameweek 17 was to drop the best bargain basement midfielder we’ve ever had in FPL, Andreas Pereira (£4.3m), in favour of a stronger midfield five. On paper, Arsenal’s fixtures weren’t great at that point which resulted in most managers going with just one of their midfielders. I viewed that as an opportunity and went with both Bukayo Saka (£8.6m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.6m), which paid off.

Going with Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.7m) in goal at that point also played a big part in the rank rise. Josh from the excellent Always Cheating podcast famously once said, “When the game throws you a bone, you grab it”. A Chelsea goalkeeper at £4.5m felt very much like that.

Morning all. 2FT & 1.9m ITB. WC33 and BB34 so looking to get rid of blankers over next few GWs.

    Kepa
    Ake - Estupian - Trippier
    Macallister - Saka - Salah - Rashford
    Toney - Darwin - Haaland

    (Ward) - Henry - Andreas - Saliba

    A) Ward + Estupian > Raya + Moreno
    B) Ward + Darwin > Raya + Watkins
    C) Ward > Raya
    D) Anything else

Maybe just one move this week. GK move is a given, especially with slight uncertainty as to Kepa’s place now with Lampard coming in.

Would get Watkins for 32 (prob for Haaland, given Darwin plays).
Ake/Estu out to Moreno for 32 also.
Gives you one more FT for 32

both are not a good choice this GW, check James or Chilwell, I would consider leicester def (Castagne?) with new manager it could give them some confidence against last team in division

This article came out as I was about to do Saka and Maddison to Grealish and Gundo for -4.

    Timely.

But also 1.5 million right now and as the article advises against!!! It's time to be stupid!

Obviously planning on bringing back Haaland for either Toney or Watkins.

    Kepa

    Zinchenko - Trippier - Chilwell

Mac Allister - Maddison - Rashford - Saka

    Kane - Watkins - Toney

I've brought him in for Darwin so yes, I'd do it. He's back in full training and they play Southampton so think it's worth bringing back in.

With a frontline of Watkins, Toney and Isak, who would you sell for Haaland?

Watkins is definitely staying because of his form, so it's between Toney and Isak:

Reasons for keeping Toney: Key player for Brentford and nailed, in form, good fixtures, Isak seems to be rotating with Wilson, everyone seems to be selling (what I don't rate as a no-brainer btw.)

Reasons for keeping Isak: DGW in the future, looming ban for Toney (although nobody knows)

Would appreciate your opinions (TC and FH left, which I probably need for GW 32)!

Maybe, but this argument is slightly reminiscent of when people were refusing to bring him in because they expected him to get a ban soon. In the meantime he kept banging in those goals.

I’ve got exactly the same conundrum with Kane, Toney and Watkins. Who do I swap for Haaland or do I take the gamble and let things lie? It’s been years since I can remember having a problem with strikers such as this.

I'm afraid you need Haaland. One solution to your problem could be your budget... Are you planning to get Salah or KdB for 34? In this case I would probably keep Toney. If not, I would probably keep Kane.

Otherwise there is still the good old coin toss...

Money not really an issue as can down grade a player to get Salah in if I go that way (which I will most probably do) . Can’t see me dropping Kane at all as he just keeps ticking over

Possible make the decision on Toney yourself as one booking away from suspension which would lead to a 2 match ban, nothing at the moment about long term betting ban - Premier League could wait until summer to allow Brentford chance for a replacement

I think mine kinda just picks itself tbh.

        DDG over Raya

        Trippier automatic
        Shaw over Henry
        Veltman over Dunk

If Shaw doesn't play then happy for Henry to come in. I've got 'Arry so Dunk can have a week off to avoid double Brighton defence...

What about you? Any dilemmas this week?

Hey, what does this sentence mean/present?

The success rate of the weekly highest clean sheet odds accumulated over the past weeks.

The previous week it was 44% (15/34) but with Arsenal failing to keep a clean sheet in DGW29 it dropped that down by 1% (15/35= 42.8% rounded up to 43%).

So if Manchester City were to keep a clean sheet in GW30, it would boost the success rate of the weekly clean sheet odds back to 44% (16/36= 44.44% rounded down).

        Does that help?

Ah, I initially read what you meant and completely misunderstood it but I think after re-reading a couple of times the figure is an average over every game week that has occurred, only taking into account the team who had the highest odds of a clean sheet, and whether the outcome was clean sheet or not.

But this ignores whether the highest clean sheet odds were say 35% or 45%, it is purely just whoever is at the top of the list and the clean sheet outcome as a yes or a no?

I’d do Bruno > Grealish and keep Saka personally

    Which transfer better?
    A. Shaw > Chilwell
    B. Isak > Watkins
    C. Save, play Henry (bench Shaw) and Isak

I'm going to try to hang in with Isak and see what happens over the next few weeks. Was aware that he could get rotated in 1 of those 3 games, and I think he will likely start at Brentford. If it was indeed just a rest, it could be a sale to regret now that Newcastle attack is starting to fire again. Don't know about Shaw yet (didn't look that bad, but if it is a hamstring...), waiting for news

Yeah just a question of this week or wait a week. I'll likely do it although Toneys not a bad option this week.

I've got myself in a pickle from poor planning for Haaland.

Best move to fund Toney to Haaland?

    A - Maddison to Grealish
    B - Shaw to Moreno
    C - Kane to Jesus
D - Kane to Halaand and keep Toney.

Feel like B is best this week!

    Raya Kepa
    Trippier Botman Estupian Chilwell Shaw
    Rash Madison March Mitoma Bruno
    Toney Watkins Kane

B makes sense albeit it may impact your MUN long term plan

What should I do with Felix now? Bought him in gw 24 instead of Watkins and has been woeful. Should I just keep him now for gw30, 31 and 33 (free hit 32) until WC 34 or sell?

I sold him for Watkins 3 weeks a go if that helps and have no regrets so I'd punt him! If you think Lampard could change Chelsea's fortunes then you could monitor this week.

I feel as if I've been super unlucky with him, every time I watch Chelsea's highlights he gets 2-3 good chances and just can't score. Been very annoying to own...

    Last dilemmas. Thinking B2

    Play one of:
    A. Maddison
    B. Mitoma

    Captain
    1. Watkins
    2. Haaland

Tough as Maddison as the better fixture but Mitoma has form. I'm playing both but would play Mitoma if i had to choose.

I'm on Watkins captain but will sell Toney for Haaland and captain in depending on if we get any news on how likely he is to start.

Morning all, appreciate any thoughts here. I have TC and FH left. I don't want to commit to FH 32 although i may end up using it. I'm around 275 rank and have a good chance of winning 2 mini leagues but I'm 75 points behind the leader in the main 1 but he has no chips left.

    1 FT and 4.8m ITB
    Kepa
    Trippier Zinc Chilly
    Saka Maddison Mitoma Rashford
    Kane (vc) Watkins (c) Toney
    Raya March Estupinan Henry

    Bench order correct and captaincy?

    Options I'm considering are
    a) Henry to Moreno and bench Zinc
    b) Toney to Haaland and captain him if he looks likely to start
    c) Stick and reasses next week and have more options for chip strategy

Actually wouldn’t mind Gundogan in my wc team or is Grealish & Haaland enough City attack? Means I’d need to seriously downgrade the defence or Kane

    Team so far

    DDG
    VVD Trips Stones Mings (Estup)
    Salah Grealish Rash (Mitoma, Andreas)
    Kane Haaland Watkins 0itb

Have a WC and FH left. Is it worth WC this team to FH in 32?

    DDG/Ward
    Trip/TAA/White/Shaw/Estup
    Salah/Saka/Odegaard/Rash/Mitoma
    Nunez/Toney/Watkins

I agree with General on this. I tend to find the best way to gain ground consistently is to be near the template and then get a bit of luck on the 50:50 calls.

I'm busy exploring the alternative method of chasing at the moment, and after a string of flops (Iheanacho & Havertz probably the worst) I am willing to concede that maybe going so hard against the template isn't really necessary to climb rank. Watkins probably would have worked out better. But still, I don't quite agree that differentials are essentially non-optimal picks - there's tons of examples, but often it can just be a case of hopping on a differential before they become template, as I did with, say, Mitoma
